Making Sense: The Glamorous Story of English Grammar

In Making Sense, David Crystal confronts the foe of many: grammar. Once taught relentlessly to all students in the English-speaking world, grammar disappeared from most school curricula, so that terms such as "preposition" and "conjunction" now often confound children and adults alike. Explaining the nuts and bolts of grammar presents a special challenge, because - far more than is the case with spelling and punctuation - the subject is burdened with a centuries-old history of educational practice that many will recall as anything but glamorous. One of the world's foremost authorities on the English language, Crystal sets out to rid grammar of its undeserved reputation as a dry and intimidating subject, pointing out how essential grammar is to clear and effective speech and writing. He moves briskly through the stages by which children acquire grammar, along the way demystifying grammar's rules and irregularities and showing us how to navigate its snares and pitfalls. He offers the fascinating history of grammar, explaining how it has evolved from the first grammarians in ancient Greece to our 21st century digital environment of blogging, emailing, and texting. Many find grammar to be a daunting subject, but in this breezy, entertaining book, Crystal proves that grammar doesn't need to make us uneasy-we can all make sense of how we make sense.

Sahidul Ahmed Quality of Secondary Education. A Case Study of Tripura

The definition of quality education depends upon the subject's perspective. For example, for the students it may stand for the facilities provided to them; for parents it may be the learning outcomes; for teachers it may be the improvement of teaching learning processes; for prospective employers it may be the nature of the output. Secondary education takes a vital part in the formation of active citizens and also plays a critical role in addressing the emerging human development concerns in countries engaged in building knowledge societies to stay connected to the process of globalization. The role of secondary education in the growth of a nation is paramount and significant, more particularly in developing countries. Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth. This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

Suppose our knowledge of the Quran began only recently with the discovery of mysterious scrolls in a desert cave. Suppose there was no Islamic history and no Muslim community to help us understand this book. Is it conceivable, then, that we might mistake it for the central text of a long-vanished apocalyptic community whose ideas about the next world, colorful and extraordinary as they appear, nonetheless make perfect sense in the context of perhaps the most pervasive literary genre of late antiquity, the epic? How do people understand the Quran to be divine revelation? What is it about this book that inspires such devotion in the reader/believer? Todd Lawson explores how the timeless literary genres of epic and apocalypse bear religious meaning in the Quran, communicating the sense of divine presence, urgency.

The importance of RMG sector for the national economy of Bangladesh can hardly be overemphasized. The industry has contributed to export earnings, foreign exchange earnings, employment creation, poverty alleviation and the empowerment of women. In the recent past incidence of physical violence, gherao, demonstrations, rallies, work stoppages/strike, termination of workers, lay-off, lock-out, etc. in the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh have noticeably increased. In the backdrop of frequent clashes between owners of garments factories and disgruntle workers this study attempts to verify whether or not Workers' Participation in Management (WPM) is being practiced here in the RMG Sector of Bangladesh. The study found that WPM does not in the real sense exist, in the RMG sector of Bangladesh. The researches proposed some recommendations for the Government and the concerned associations of both employers and workers to help WPM exercised in the RMG sector of Bangladesh.

Jane Jones Learning in USA Algebra Classes - Instructor Perceptions of Student Learning in Secondary and Postsecondary Algebra Classes

Knowledge of algebra is the critical gatekeeper for success in completing high school and postsecondary training. In the United States 22% of entering freshmen are under-prepared for college mathematics. Researchers have documented disconnects between secondary and postsecondary mathematics' expectations, but little is known about instructor perceptions of student learning in algebra classes. A researcher-developed survey was administered to a random sample of high school, community college, and university mathematics instructors to determine how well they believed students were mastering algebra content in high school and college algebra classes. Findings indicated there are differences in instructors' perceptions of algebra learning in high school and in credit-bearing college algebra classes. The book should help establish the importance of significant three-way dialogue between high school, community college, and university instructors in order to find ways to enable students to make successful transitions from high school to college mathematics, and should be of interest to secondary and postsecondary mathematics professionals.

Employ cognitive theory in the classroom every day Research into how we learn has opened the door for utilizing cognitive theory to facilitate better student learning. But that's easier said than done. Many books about cognitive theory introduce radical but impractical theories, failing to make the connection to the classroom. In Small Teaching, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference—many of which can be put into practice in a single class period. These strategies are designed to bridge the chasm between primary research and the classroom environment in a way that can be implemented by any faculty in any discipline, and even integrated into pre-existing teaching techniques. Learn, for example: How does one become good at retrieving knowledge from memory? How does making predictions now help us learn in the future? How do instructors instill fixed or growth mindsets in their students? Each chapter introduces a basic concept in cognitive theory, explains when and how it should be employed, and provides firm examples of how the intervention has been or could be used in a variety of disciplines. Small teaching techniques include brief classroom or online learning activities, one-time interventions, and small modifications in course design or communication with students.

D. M. McInerney Student Perspectives on Assessment. What Students Can Tell Us about Assessment for Learning (PB)

A volume in Research on Sociocultural Influences on Motivation and LearningSeries Editor: Dennis M. McInerney, The Hong Kong Institute of EducationAssessment for learning is meant to engage, motivate, and enable students to do better intheir learning. However, how students themselves perceive assessments (both high-stakesqualifications and low-stakes monitoring) is not well understood. This volume collectsresearch studies from Europe, North and South America, Asia, and New Zealand thathave deliberately focused on how students in primary, secondary, and tertiary education conceive of, experience, understand, and evaluate assessments. Assessment for learning has assumed that formative assessments and classroompractices would be an unqualified success in terms of student learning outcomes. Making use of a variety of qualitativelyinterpreted focus groups, observations, and interviews and factor-analytic survey methods, the studies collected in thisvolume raise doubts as to the validity of this formulation. We commend this volume to readers hoping to stimulate theirown thinking and research in the area of student assessment. We believe the chapters will challenge researchers, policymakers, teacher educators, and instructors as to how assessment for learning can be implemented.

Hajhashemi Karim Relationship between Multiple Intelligences and Reading Proficiency

This book provides an initial view of the nature and quality of the students' multiple intelligences and how they are related to the students' gender and reading scores. As a teacher, what we know and what we do in the classroom should have significant influence on the thoughts, achievement and behaviors of the students. Teachers can teach learners, for instance, certain strategies to use their intellectual strengths in support of their learning. In this respect, the results can be used to make recommendations that may serve to make educators, teachers, trainers, and instructional designers aware of ways to modify instruction and offer a variety of opportunities for both instructors and learners in the classroom. I hope that the results of this study may lead teachers to provide opportunities for each individual to develop a consciousness of how their mind works and therefore teach towards the learning needs of all students in the classroom. This will help them to see that everyone has areas of strength and areas of challenge, and that it is worthwhile to celebrate their success and failure as a community of accomplished learners.

Dr. Mark O'Doherty Healing Bangladesh - Improving Human Rights, Gender Mainstreaming and Religious Education in the People.s Republic of Bangladesh

In view of the series of brutal murders of secular writers, gay activists, bloggers and liberal intellectuals by extremists in Bangladesh, the country is in need of healing on many levels - Bangladesh's overall inability to get to grips with extremism being the result of a fractured country, where legitimate criticism and debate are increasingly restricted. Hence the importance of improving human rights, gender equality and religious education in the country. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Bangladesh; with both social scientific and Islamic approaches, so that social equality, civil liberties and a just social peace can be manifested in the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

GEORGE COLLINS, JAMES DAVIS 300 Single Best Answers in Clinical Medicine

This book is a question book that offers single best answers (SBA) to 300 questions related to topics in general medicine. In order to further enhance knowledge and understanding, detailed answers have been included. This book is designed as both a revision and learning aid, with questions being set in a mock-examination format which can be completed under timed conditions. The primary target audience of this book is clinical medical students who are revising for examinations. However, questions have been planned in a way that a fairly large secondary target audience will be reached as well. This includes students who are transitioning from pre-clinical to clinical. As recently qualified medical graduates who have had the option of both online and book-based questions, the authors feel that students often prefer a Single Best Answers book that aids them in advancing their medical knowledge rather than online question banks, which can often have very repetitive and one-dimensional questions. Having questions in paper format replicates examination conditions better than online question banks and, therefore, offers a more realistic revision experience. In addition, though SBAs are becoming increasingly more common as an examination style with medical schools, there are very few SBA question books available. As such, medical students will find this book highly useful in the preparation for their examinations.

Najmul Haider, Golam Shahi Alam Reproductive Performance of Dairy Cows in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has one of the highest densities of livestock in the world with 145 large ruminants per square kilometer. Dairy is the most important sector of livestock industry in Bangladesh that provides greater part of animal source protein for human consumption. Lifetime productivity of cows largely depends on their individual reproductive performance. In most countries, the primary objective of a reproductive control program in a dairy herd is to have each cow calve and produce a live calf in every 12 months. Like in many other countries, poor reproductive efficiency has been considered to be the major limiting factors in medium and large scale market oriented dairying in Bangladesh for achieving this goal. This book highlighted the overall reproductive efficiency in main milk pocket area of Bangladesh combining both traditional and recent measures of reproductive indexes.

Roger Graves, Theresa Hyland Writing Assignments Across University Disciplines

Writing Assignments Across the University Curriculum as a whole asks and answers these questions: What kinds of documents do students write in a wide range of university degree programs in Canada? How do instructors structure those writing assignments? That is, who is the audience for the assignments? Do students get formative feedback as they develop their documents? Do the patterns we found in a small liberal arts college (Graves, Hyland, and Samuels 2010) occur in other kinds of universities? We took our cue from an article by Anson and Dannels (2009) who pointed us toward the idea that students experience a curriculum through their degree progress in an academic program. Consequently, we needed to map the writing assignments according to how different departments organized these degree programs. Results that were organized by curricular unit (departments, faculties or colleges, or programs/units) were more significant than general statistics because students would progress through these courses to a degree. Several chapters in the book describe how this kind of curricular mapping provided a spark for curricular reform in Engineering, Education, and an entire small university. The last two chapters report on the instructors? perspective on their assignments: what they were intending to do, and why they both resisted and engaged in curricular discussions.

It should be possible sensibly to compare philosophy and religion. If the former is love of knowledge then the latter is love of god and fellow man. In terms of love, both make sense. Both imply something that is done, something practical. Just as the love of knowledge for its own sake is down to earth, undiluted by ideal content and free of criticisms, so is the love of god and fellow man contemporary, unlimited in its scope as to how we love and in how many ways.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 2, University of Innsbruck (Department of American Studies), course: Ethical Issues in American Medical and Legal Narratives, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "How many lives do we live? How many times do we die? They say we all lose 21 grams... at the exact moment of our death. Everyone. And how much fits into 21 grams? How much is lost? When do we lose 21 grams? How much goes with them? How much is gained? How much is gained? Twenty-one grams. The weight of a stack of five nickels. The weight of a hummingbird. A chocolate bar. How much did 21 grams?" Paul Rivers leaves us with all these questions before he dies, and in fact, we need all these questions in order to reach a deeper understanding and to make sense of the movie. So, how much do 21 grams weigh? And what are these 21 grams. It is tempting to give a relatively simple answer from a medical or religious perspective. We may say that gases exhaust from our body or even that the soul escapes from the body when we die. But this movie goes a step further. These 21 grams apparently weigh so little but in the end weigh a lot. These 21 grams are the happiness of a family, the target of revenge, the reason for struggle, they are life itself. So our lives are dependent on these 21 grams, which shows that life is really fragile. And this leads us to the topic of this paper: organ transplantation. Organ tra...
