The book describes neotectonic uplifts producing mountain building in the Alpine-Himalayan Belt. This process began in the Oligocene as formation of local uplifts in zones of concentration of collision compression and accelerated in the Pliocene and Quaternary as the isostatic effect of decrease of density of the uppermost mantle and the lower crust by partial replacing of the lithospheric mantle by the asthenosphere material and retrograde metamorphism of high-metamorphosed rocks by asthenosphere fluids. These changes were initiated and kept up by the sub-lithosphere upper mantle flows that spread, according to the seismic tomography data, from the Ethiopian-Afar superplume and were enriched by fluids, reworking the transitional mantle layer beneath the future mountain belt. The upper mantle flows not only move lithosphere plates with all plate-tectonic consequences of this process, but also initiate transformations of the lithosphere that results in vertical movements producing mountain building. A new tomographic imaging modality called magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has been proposed in 2005. Using the non-linear magnetization curve of specific nanoparticles, a detectable signal proportional to the concentration of these particles can be generated. For medical imaging the tracer material can be injected into the blood system. Due to fast image acquisition, not only morphological, but also functional imaging is possible. The feasibility of medical imaging with this technique could be demonstrated at real time imaging of a beating mouse heart. Spatial encoding is provided by superimposing dedicated external magnetic fields. For the resulting shape of this field a field free line has been proposed. This work presents the implementation of the MPI system with a discretely rotatable and dynamically translatable field free line.

The method exploits the non-linear magnetization behavior of the SPIOs, and has shown great potential to surpass current in vivo imaging modalities in terms of sensitivity, safety, quantitation, and spatio-temporal resolution. MPI is well suited for clinical applications such as angiography, cancer imaging, and inflammation imaging; as well as research applications such as stem cell imaging and small animal imaging. Since the first workshop in 2010, the International Workshop on MPI (IWMPI) has been the premier forum for researchers working in the MPI field. The workshop aims at covering the status and recent developments of both the instrumentation and the tracer material, as they are equally important in designing a well performing MPI system. The main topics presented at the workshop include hardware developments, image reconstruction and systems theory, nanoparticle physics and theory, nanoparticle synthesis, spectroscopy, patient safety, and medical/research applications of MPI.

The intent of current investigation is to make colon targeting methylprednisolone compression coated tablets using time dependent polymer hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and pH sensitive polymer Eudragit S100 that retard the liberation of drug in upper gastro intestinal system and also show progressive release in colon. The prepared formulations were optimized using dissolution tests and evaluated for colonic delivery by x-ray imaging and pharmacokinetic studies in healthy humans. The optimized formulation of methylprednisolone showed 10.52±0.68% in the initial lag period of 5 h followed by progressive release up to 101.43±3.33% for 24 h. The x-ray imaging study in human volunteers illustrated that the tablets arrived to colon with no loss of integrity in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Cmax of colon targeted compression coated tablets was 10324.83 ng/ml at Tmax 10 h which clearly indicates the capability of compression coated tablets to give colon targeting.
