Offers solutions and best practices to respond to recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in the field Since the publication of the first edition of Environmental Impact Assessment in 2003, both the practice and theory of impact assessment have changed substantially. Not only has the field been subject to a great deal of new regulations and guidelines, it has also evolved tremendously, with a greater emphasis on strategic environmental, sustainability, and human health impact assessments. Moreover, there is a greater call for impact assessments from a global perspective. This Second Edition, now titled Impact Assessment to reflect its broader scope and the breadth of these many changes, offers students and practitioners a current guide to today's impact assessment practice. Impact Assessment begins with an introduction and then a chapter reviewing conventional approaches to the field. Next, the book is organized around recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in impact assessment process design and management, enabling readers to quickly find the material they need to solve tough problems, including: How to make impact assessments more influential, rigorous, rational, substantive, practical, democratic, collaborative, ethical, and adaptive How each problem and challenge-reducing process would operate at the regulatory and applied levels How each problem can be approached for different impact assessment types—sustainability assessment, strategic environmental assessment, project-level EIA, social impact assessment, ecological impact assessment, and health impact assessment How to link and combine impact assessment processes to operate in situations with multiple overlapping problems, challenges, and impact assessment types How to connect and combine impact assessment processes Each chapter first addresses the topic with current theory and then demonstrates how that theory is applied, presenting requirements, guidelines, and best practices. Summaries at the end of each chapter provide a handy tool for structuring the design and evaluation of impact assessment processes and documents. Readers will find analyses and new case studies that address such issues as multi-jurisdictional impact assessment, climate change, cumulative effects assessment, follow-up, capacity building, interpreting significance, and the siting of major industrial and waste facilities. Reflecting current theory and standards of practice, Impact Assessment is appropriate for both students and practitioners in the field, enabling them to confidently respond to a myriad of new challenges in the field.

Volunteering improves inner character, builds community, cures poverty, and prevents crime. We've all heard this kind of empowerment talk from nonprofit and government-sponsored civic programs. But what do these programs really accomplish? In Making Volunteers, Nina Eliasoph offers an in-depth, humorous, wrenching, and at times uplifting look inside youth and adult civic programs. She reveals an urgent need for policy reforms in order to improve these organizations and shows that while volunteers learn important lessons, they are not always the lessons that empowerment programs aim to teach. With short-term funding and a dizzy mix of mandates from multiple sponsors, community programs develop a complex web of intimacy, governance, and civic life. Eliasoph describes the at-risk youth served by such programs, the college-bound volunteers who hope to feel selfless inspiration and plump up their resumés, and what happens when the two groups are expected to bond instantly through short-term projects. She looks at adult "plug-in" volunteers who, working in after-school programs and limited by time, hope to become like beloved aunties to youth. Eliasoph indicates that adult volunteers can provide grassroots support but they can also undermine the family-like warmth created by paid organizers. Exploring contradictions between the democratic rhetoric of empowerment programs and the bureaucratic hurdles that volunteers learn to navigate, the book demonstrates that empowerme...

This book aims to provide evidences to the policy makers, academicians, researchers and implementers on the linkages between adult (functional) literacy programs and Women Empowerment in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, where the Self Help Group (SHG) movement is very strong. Though the government of Andhra Pradesh have made attempts to provide functional literacy programs through its district centers and below, the results are below the expected level. The present study makes an attempt to find out the gaps in the program and suggest appropriate policy measures. It is found that, the relationship between literacy and empowerment is bidirectional and there is high need for departmental coordination in order to make the literacy programs more effective. This issue is extremely important at the current juncture, as the harassment and physical attacks on women/females is increasing day by day and the domestic violence has become a common phenomenon.Economic and Social empowerment of the women is the need of the hour. It is expected that the readers would learn from the findings mentioned in the book and make use of the same for future policy making.

This Study analyzes the conditions, problems and potential of rural women’s empowerment through a sample of rural women’s organizations (two women’s cooperative, seven rural development cooperative and one village women association) with a socialist feminist perspective. In this study, it is stated that the agricultural sector policies and rural development policy were constructed in relation with the conditions of underdevelopment in Turkey. It is notable that these policies are formulated without taking precautions for the survival of small sized farming households in rural areas. Despite these general influences of underdevelopment to Turkish Agricultural Sector and patriarchal ideology, these women’s organizations could be successful to some extent empowering their members with the recognized dimensions of empowerment such as; psychological, economical, social, organizational and political. With this study, it could be said that while economic empowerment and psychological empowerment are the base of all dimensions of empowerment, social empowerment and organizational empowerment are the most dynamic processes of empowerment and political empowerment is the hardest to achieve.

The conclusion is that a definite effect on income and poverty is measured but that effects are more profound when credit is given to women. Similar results are found on the impact on human development indicators like health and education. Finally concerning cost effectiveness the programs do not seem financially viable but for society as a whole benefits do seem to outweigh costs.

As demands for accountability escalate, assessment continues to evolve as a central aspect of student affairs administration. Experience clearly indicates that without a robust portfolio of assessment activities, the services, programs, and activities of a student affairs division are at risk of being reassigned to other organizational units on campus—or, in a tight budgetary environment, being eliminated. This sourcebook reminds student affairs educators of the importance of developing an assessment program and explores topics that will add depth and richness to such a program. From specific metrics to broad strategies for developing collaborative activities involving academic and student affairs, it shows how to integrate valuable resources into the assessment process and how to use that process to enhance the student experience. The authors also take the largest view, offering advice on developing an institutional culture of assessment and planning future actions that will best serve students during their collegiate years. This is the 142nd volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly series. An indispensable resource for vice presidents of student affairs, deans of students, student counselors, and other student services professionals, New Directions for Student Services offers guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.

The ‘minimalist’ approach that once dominated microfinance outreach in the past is now a fading memory. A growing number of studies are suggesting a more ‘integrative’ approach to support the marginalized and ultra-poor households. This study highlights the impact of the integrated programs, namely Productive Safety Net Program-PLUS (food aid plus microcredit) and food aid from the Eastern part of Ethiopia. Quasi-panel data-set were used to evaluate the impact of the integrated projects. The result from the endogenous switching regression as well as the recursive bivariate probit models revealed that households who chose to participate in the integrated programs showed a positive & significant impact in their livestock holdings and consumption expenditure, and they better afforded education and health costs. Nevertheless, beneficiaries of non-integrated (food aid) program did not show significant impact on the consumption expenditure & livestock holdings, and they are less likely to afford education and health cost compared to the non-beneficiaries.

This book assesses whether or not microcredit programs of FINCA International are empowering women clients and their households in Malawi and Zambia. The study set out to determine if any major changes, partial changes or no changes have occurred on women clients and their households, businesses and communities, because of clients' participation in FINCA program. Study participants were women clients under the Village Bank and Loan Officers. This book argues that the FINCA microcredit program has enabled women clients attain some important levels of empowerment, and improve their wellbeing. The program has also benefited clients' households, businesses, and communities. However, some clients have not benefited much from this program. It also argues that the FINCA program has not enabled women clients attain other levels of empowerment, due, in part, to its shortcomings, and challenges it is facing. It further contends that differing program impacts exist among clients, households and businesses; but beneficiary communities have benefited similarly. It also unravels the workings of the current stiff competition and scramble for clients among MFIs in Malawi and Zambia.

Reputable scientific opinion recommends the use of mandibular two-implant overdentures as the minimum standard of care for edentulous patients. This technology is associated with high treatment and maintenance costs, which necessitates a systematic critical appraisal of its efficacy and economic impact to aid informed decision making by clinicians regarding its procurement and/or expanded use into clinical practice. This book is based on a Health Technology Assessment that assesses the economic and clinical outcomes (clinician- and patient-based) of ball-type mandibular two-implant overdenture treatment in comparison to treatment with removable mandibular complete dentures, different types of attachments for mandibular two-implant overdentures, and different loading protocols of the mandibular overdenture.

Micro-finance is a set of financial practices designed to serve the unbanked poor and it is a potent weapon against poverty that is supposed to solve it all. Micro-finance is a term of comparatively recent origin. It is reflective of at least two elements which were not captured by earlier debates and concerns on the subject of rural credit. The term ‘micro-finance‘ itself is considered inappropriate by some NGOs which prefer the term of ‘development finance’ or ‘alternative finance’ which can be said to “aim at assessing communities of the economically excluded to achieve greater levels of asset creation and income security at the household and community level”. It can include enterprise development and marketing strategies, community-based investments and financial management schemes. In view of the importance the present study is a useful exercise in this direction to assess the scope and growth of micro-finance and rural area women empowerment. Finally, this work has immense value of growth of Micro-finance and Women empowerment in India and Andhra Pradesh.

The book provides an analysis of the effect of migration on the empowerment of women in traditionally patriarchal societies in three Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia. The study focuses on the household unit and examines the positions of women with and without migration experience in their families. Research findings suggest that the effect of migration on the empowerment of women in three selected dimensions (socio-cultural, economic and domestic decision making) depends crucially on the personal ability of each individual woman to consider the migration experience in light of the complex interface of socio-economic factors in both home and host countries.

Behavioral programs for T1DM offer some benefit for glycemic control when followup extends beyond end of intervention up to 6 months. There was no statistically significant difference at end of intervention or followup timepoints longer than 6 months, although our confidence in these findings is low and benefit cannot be ruled out. More evidence is required to determine the effects of behavioral programs for other outcomes, including lifestyle behaviors, body composition, diabetes-specific quality of life, diabetes distress, and complications. For T2DM, our analyses showed limited benefit in glycemic control from DSME programs offering

The importance of student assessment, particularly for summative purposes, has increased greatly over the pastthirty years. At the same time, emphasis on including all students in assessment programs has also increased.Assessment programs, whether they are large-scale, district-based, or teacher developed, have traditionally attempted toassess students using a single instrument administered to students under the same conditions. Educators and testdevelopers, however, are increasingly acknowledging that this practice does not result in valid information, inferences, and decisions for all students. This problem is particularly true for students in the margins, whose characteristics andneeds differ from what the public thinks of as the general population of students. Increasingly, educators, educationalleaders, and test developers are seeking strategies, techniques, policies, and guidelines for assessing students for whomstandard assessment instruments do not function well.Whether used for high-stakes decisions or classroom-based formative decisions, the most critical element of anyeducational assessment is validity. Developing and administering assessment instruments that provide valid measuresand allow for valid inferences and decisions for all groups of students presents a major challenge for today's assessmentprograms. Over the past few decades, several national policies have sparked research and development efforts that aimto increase test validity for students in the ma...

Women make up over half of the population in Canada, yet they comprise less than half of the participants in many executive graduate degree programs and only 34 percent of managers and administrators in the work force. For many women of childbearing age, these statistics provide insight into the cycle of frustration encountered when they seek admittance to graduate programs. Despite the changes that have taken place in a workforce where more education is required to obtain positions that could previously be achieved without a graduate degree or professional designation, executive graduate degree programs have failed to adapt their programs to meet educational needs of women and their changing roles. Further, most recent literature focuses on the successful careers of women over 40. Most of these women, however, are childless and single or they are on their second marriage with stepchildren. It was, therefore, important to obtain feedback from women planning for a successful career who anticipated the need to balance a career and family. This study concentrated on the barriers that limit access for women, ages 25 to 39, to executive graduate degree programs.

The present book is concerned with the theme of role of SHGs in women empowerment. After Independence, since the First Five Year Plan (1951-56), India has been taking initiatives for the development of women. But a shift from development to Empowerment of Women was taken during the VIIIth plan period (1992-97). The SHG's started playing an important role in the rural development. Constitution of India guarantees equality to women (Article 14). There are other articles too which ensure rights of women e.g. no discrimination by the state [article 15(1)] equality of opportunity (Article 16) etc. Feminist activism picked up momentum in India during later 1970’s. Later on many self help groups and NGO’s have been working for the Empowerment of women. We are proud that in India Women got voting right much before USA and some other European countries. It is hoped that this book would help to throw light on the role of SHGs in empowering women in Andhra Pradesh particularly in Anantapur district, in different dimensions such as mobility, autonomy, decision making power, freedom from domination, political and legal awareness, reproductive rights, participation in developmental activities.
