Tamil Nadu is India's fifth largest producer of rice, next to West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The Cauvery delta region of the composite Thanjavur district in the state is known as the Rice Bowl of South India. Rice is grown in 2.1 million hectares accounting for about one-third of the gross cropped area under diverse environments in the state, like; rain-fed tank, tank, tank cum well, canal (river) and canal (reservoir) irrigation systems. The rice productivity growth had been declining at the rate of -0.40 per cent (during period 1990-91 to 1999-00) as the yields of existing varieties had already been plateauing. Recent breakthroughs in the development of tropical hybrid rice technology had how ever provided an alternative option for raising yield levels for sustained production growth in rice especially in favourable irrigated eco-systems. A nation-wide network on Development and Use of Hybrid Rice Technology - initiated by the ICAR with support from the UNDP,FAO and IRRI. Under this network,TNAU has released four rice hybrids so far, namely; CORH 1, CORH 2 ADTRH 1 and ADTRH 2.Hence, it was decided to take-up this hybrid technology impact study.

This empirical study examined the impact of food price hike on household food security at different income levels of the people in Bangladesh. The study extensively used national household income, expenditure, and food consumption survey data of Bangladesh together with the weekly time series data on price of rice and wheat. Households having higher share of income on food consumption were found to be the worst affected by the price rise. To understand how international price rise is transmitted into domestic foodgrain market in Bangladesh, cointegration analysis and Error Correction Model were used. The result confirms the existence of long-term equilibrium relationship between international and domestic market price of rice while wheat price did not. Error Correction Model was used to see the short term dynamics as well as long term information of rice price. Although impact of rising rice price in the international market has not been realised immediately in the domestic market due to different price stabilizing programmes and policies of the government of Bangladesh, rising price of rice in international market has long term impact on Bangladesh market.

Residual effects of Zinc (Zn) fertilizer and farmyard manure (FYM) help in economizing the fertilizer use without any adverse effect on soil fertility and crop yields. No information is available for residual effect of Zn fertilizer applied in conjunction with FYM to rice-wheat rotation practiced in the northern plains, hot sub-humid (dry) ecoregion of India. The present investigation was carried out to determine the residual effect of Zn fertilizer application with or without farmyard manure on yields, cationic micro-nutrients (Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn) concentration and uptake of third crop rice and fourth crop wheat under rotation. The residual of conjoint use of 2.5 or 3.75 Kg Zn/ha + 5 t FYM/ha was found most beneficial for increasing both yields and nutrient uptake of both rice and wheat crops.

Rice is the second most important cereal crop eaten by nearly half of the world population. In Africa, rice consumption is growing at even faster rates, and is replacing more traditional crops. Despite the expansion in rice production witnessed in the recent years in many parts of Africa, the demand for rice has far outstripped the local production. Low yield which have been attributed to many factors (rice genotypes, pests and weather factors) constitutes one of the main challenges of rice production in Africa. These necessitated the search for rice genotypes that will suit the African need, hence the birth of New Rice for Africa (NERICA) by Africa Rice Center. Though Africa Rice Center has done substantial documentation on the potentials of NERICA in repositioning rice industry in Africa, however, information on their performance in relation to pests and its management in different parts of the continent still needs more light. The unavailability of NERICA manuals up to date to x-ray its potentials specifically in the management of rice pests/stresses has been identified as a limiting factor in adopting the new breed rice for an enhanced and sustainable rice production in Africa.

The core of the thesis is then an econometric panel data analysis based on the data collected from 13 member states of the EU over the period between 2010 and 2013 analysing two relationships. First, the impact of the share of renewable energy sources in the final electricity production on the European consumer electricity prices. This study was conducted to assess the socioeconomic status and gender role of cereal crop production in two VDCs of Arghakhachi district. A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect the information from the respondents. Two VDCs were selected purposively and 60 HHs (30 from each VDC) were selected randomly for the survey. Cereal crop production has great contribution in HH income and livelihood upliftment. The study area was male dominated. Agriculture was the major occupation in the study area. The average area under rice (7.46 ropani) was more followed by wheat (4.58 ropani) and maize (4.35 ropani) in the study area. Hybrid variety of rice, HYV of maize and local variety of wheat was most popular. Seed was higher for wheat (10.73 kg) followed by rice (8.75 kg) and maize (6.5 kg).Total production of rice was higher than maize and wheat.The major problems in the study area were lack of technical assistance, lack of irrigation facilities and low quality seed.

Rice cultivation faces challenges across the world and India is no exception. With the increasing cost of cultivation of paddy coupled with labour scarcity, sustaining the interest of farmers in rice cultivation has become a challenge. Thus, there is an urgent need to produce more output with a drop of water owing to water scarcity. This study has envisaged to examine the issues in adoption and dis-adoption and its impact on resource use, yield and efficiency of SRI farmers in Palakkad district of Kerala, India. The present study revealed that SRI can be further adopted and practiced by farmers if there is an improvement in SRI extension service delivery. The main problem associated with discontinuance behaviour of farmers was shortage of skilled labour. Training and education to farmers on SRI techniques should be enhanced so that skilled labour is available for various operations and farmers can adopt SRI technologies to their own resource endowments and constraints to improve their rice production. The farmers should also be provided with essential institutional support through technology and capacity building.

The long-run damage of climate change to economic and social well-being has been well documented. As more and more evidence accumulates, the urgency of establishing an adequate economic policy response is only increasing. Accordingly, global and national policy-makers have undertaken various initiatives to implement climate change mitigation measures, as proposed by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and many other scholars. The biggest obstacle, however, to the adoption of climate change policies, e.g., carbon taxes or cap-and-trade systems, is their uncertain impact on employment. Could climate change mitigation policies result in net employment gains by creating new jobs in new economic sectors? Or, would such policies be detrimental for overall employment goals? This book provides an in-depth analysis of the impact on employment caused by climate change policies using a variety of analytical approaches, including input-output modelling and vector autoregressions (VAR). There are a number of reasons for global climate change, examples of which include the increased intensity of solar energy or the cyclicality of Earth's temperatures, volcanism, oceanic circulation cycles, biosphere impact, ultraviolet radiation variability, reflectivity, rotational variation, solar systemic changes, galaxy positional variability, albedo, human influence and so on. The present research analyse on the impact of climate change on major crops in Tamil Nadu. It is observed from the study more that there is no impact of climate change on major crops. The major crops present a very little change in the productivity due to change in climate. Their co-efficient of variations are more or less uniform except for cotton the variation in cotton is observed in the latter half of the period of study. Its rise in productivity may due to the adoption of new technology in cultivation and the use of modern implements in agriculture. Thus climate change has no direct impact of major crops.

Wheat is the main economy crop of pakistan,it is cultivated on area of 9.062 million hectare,& producing about 23.42 million tons and grain yield 2585 kg/hectare.Drought the major factor which reduce the wheat production in Pakistan.In the present research,out of twenty wheat varieties studied Miraj-08(8.97g), Sussui(8.53g) and Sandal (8.45g),Tandojam-83(7.53) and Chakwal-86(6.90) and were found best in yield production per plant.For numerical analysis 18 morphological traits were used.Dendrogram analysis of morphological traits assorted the 20 wheat varieties into 4 clusters.The clusters represent genetic dissimilarity among various varieties of wheat studied were found to be different from each other based on their characterization. In Molecular marker studies variety Dirk is found best for drought.Average genetic dissimilarity(estimated as genetic distance)among 20 wheat varieties based upon the amplification pattern of RAPD primer GLB-11, GLA-13, GLC-01, GLC-04, P-6 and P-7 are presented in the(Table-20)based on the tables 14,15,16,17,18,19.Range of genetic distance estimated was from 10 to 100%.Maximum genetic distance (100%) were estimated for only one comperison.

The Bt (Bacillus Thuringiensis) cotton seed production focussed on the socio-economic characteristics of contract farmers, cost and return, efficiency of resource use and problems faced by the farmers in Bt cotton seed production under different companies. The total cost of Bt cotton seed production varied from one company contract farmers to other company contract farmers. The Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the farmers who have contracted with different seed companies, the use of seed was found to be optimum across all company contract farmers. Whereas, fertilizer resource was over utilized by farmers who have contracted with various companies. Non availability of trained labour and prevalence of high wage rate were the major constraints in case of production, where as poor technical assistance and low contract price were the contractual problems. Therefore the Bt cotton seed production technology had positive impact on Socio- economic status of farmers by increase in yield and reducing cost on inputs thereby increase in income and also standard of living.

The rainfed agro ecosystem supports 40 per cent of the human and 65 per cent of the livestock population, provides 44 per cent of food requirement and it has played and continues to play a critical role in Indian agriculture (Singh et al., 2004).
