The Course Reflection Project. Faculty Reflections on Teaching Service-Learning

Service-learning is entering a post-initiatory phase. At tertiary institutions of all types and sizes,service-learning programs are common and service-learning requirements for graduation aregrowing in popularity. Taken together -- alongside continued faculty interest in effective teaching-- these factors have raised the visibility and popularity of service-learning. Now the greater needin service-learning is not to prove the need for, or efficacy of, service-learning, but to turn thefocus squarely back on practice. Following established best practice is not enough; instructorsalso need to reflect on how this fits within the specific context and application of each uniquecourse and service-learning partnership. While there are many excellent resources that detail bestpractice and showcase exemplary service-learning courses, faculty reflection and course revisionoften goes unmentioned. In response to the lack of attention on the role of reflection and courserevision, we convened groups of faculty from a variety of disciplines to reflect deeply on their courses, paying specific attention toobstacles and challenges. These conversations were converted to articles for this edited collection, each chapter representing theprocess of reflection and revision and serving as a guide to develop effective practice in varied curricular contexts. This text contributes to the body of literature on service-learning in a unique and practical manner. Exploring Cultural Dynamics and Tensions Within Service-Learning

Service-learning is an exciting pedagogy and field of study, offering insight into how academic study andcommunity engagement blend to create social change. In its most traditional conceptualization, servicelearningactivities typically manifest within communities where outside individuals address a need. Servicelearningis purported to have a transforming effect on individual student perspectives by providing studentsthe opportunity to interact with people and enter into situations that allow students to test their predispositiontowards others. However, the literature on the impact of service-learning on participants' acceptance ofdiversity and development of open-mindedness reports mixed outcomes. The purpose of this book is to explore cultural tensions and dynamics within the field of service-learning. It isnot meant to be an exhaustive review of the interplay between culture and service learning, but rather a starting point for an ongoing conversationabout how this complex topic impacts the field. In 18 chapters, educators, students, and administrators investigate the cultural values of servicelearningitself and the tensions created when this is at odds with the values of others within K-12 and higher education in the United States and abroad.Authors include community organization representatives, researchers, directors of offices of community engagement, university administrators, juniorand senior faculty, and former service-learning undergraduate students. Problematizing Service-Learning. Critical Reflections for Development and Action

Interest in and research on civic engagement and service-learning have increased exponentially. In this rapid growth, efforts have been made to institutionalize pedagogies of engagement across both K-12 and higher education. As a result, increased positive attention has been complemented equally by well-founded critiques complicating experientialapproaches' claims and questioning if institutional, financial, and philosophical commitment is warranted. A key complaintfrom these critical voices is the tightly woven, protective insular core in the field of service-learning. This claim isnot unfounded, nor necessarily bad. Initial efforts to legitimize service-learning and other forms of community-basededucation required group cohesion. The concern, however, is that the initial group cohesion has led to groupthinkwherein group members have avoided critical analysis and evaluation. This book aims to prevent groupthink within thefield of service-learning by allowing for the examination of effective alternatives by new voices who can serve as "criticalevaluators" from within the field itself.Myriad perspectives are offered, including empirical, theoretical, practical, and community perspectives. Authors challengepreconceived notions of service-learning, who is benefited by this pedagogy, outcomes of participation and implementation, and most importantly the theoretical, conceptual, and methodological lenses through which service-learning is even considered. An essential guide for those charged with supervision of nonclinical staffin programs, agencies, and units within social service organizations «As someone who has worked in social service agencies, consulted with hundreds of them, and who teaches social service professionals, Ms. Summers knows the issues faced by agencies firsthand. From this experience she has compiled a thoughtful and well-organized text that identifies the principles of effective supervision.» —Samuel Knapp, EdD Director of Professional Affairs, Pennsylvania Psychological Association From the Foreword The care of patients and clients of social service agencies is increasingly being performed by paraprofessionals or professionals with little experience. While there are many books written about giving quality clinical supervision, there is very little on supervising the least experienced frontline nonclinical and clinical staff to teach and promote positive and effective interaction with clients, and provide staff support and training that elevates quality care, improves job satisfaction, and minimizes staff turnover. Based on author Nancy Summers' many years of working with troubled social service agencies, Managing Social Service Staff for Excellence: Five Keys to Exceptional Supervision fills this need and offers numerous ideas for securing the best care for those served by social service agencies. Common problems faced by agencies are examined with regard to employee behavior and wellness, including staff teamwork, how to build healthy staff/client relationships, and the identification and prevention of routine disrespect of clients and their needs. Diagnostic techniques are presented for identifying these problems, as well as remedies and prevention programs that can be put in place without great expense. Filled with interviews and numerous case examples, Managing Social Service Staff for Excellence offers a step-by-step process for: creating good preventive measures to counteract negative practices that can occur; developing robust commitment and enthusiasm; and getting back on the right track after unfortunate incidents have taken place.

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Sehr gut, The University of Surrey (School of Management), course: Business Administration, language: English, abstract: Today, the service sector contributes to a major part of the GDP of the most developed countries, while the share of services of the total export of these countries is comparable low. This constitutes certain challenges for the internationalisation of services. With regard to the use of "country-of-origin effects" (COO), the special service characteristics create challenges for service companies, e.g. by the inseparability of service provision and consumption. When decisions on the market entry options are made and local staff is favoured to expatriate staff, incongruence in the COO facets occurs which is difficult to hide. Based on the research on products, this might reduce COO's positive effects on service consumers' quality expectations (ESQ). In this context, the question arises whether information on training in the company's home country (CTI) can reduce the aforementioned negative effect. In order to examine the existence of these relationships, an online provided self-administered experiment was created. Using a non-probability sample of 100 Germans, respondents were asked to rate two different service examples with regard to the ESQ. In each example, the country of the person providing the service (CPI) wa...

Its efficacy has been researched in a variety of ways and this volume continuesto expand that research base. In particular, in this volume, Service-Learning Pedagogy: HowDoes It Measure Up?, we explore three broad areas of service-learning research and practice thatreflect broader discussions of the role of pedagogy in today's educational reform efforts: TeacherEducation, Crossing Boundaries: Deepening Relationships in Service-Learning and New Paradigms/Conceptual Frameworks. Many have called for more rigorous methods when researching service-learning pedagogy. That has been the major impetus for thisvolume. We seek to generate knowledge regarding service-learning pedagogy, while developing theories about it. We surface someelusive affective characteristics of the pedagogy, which we know has the power to produce transformational learning. To this end, theauthors who have contributed to this volume effectively add to the growing body of knowledge in the field and help us get closer tounderstanding the extent to which service-learning does and does not measure up.

This study reports on recent doctoral research focused on six academic staff working in early blended learning environments in campus-based contexts at a large Australian university. The case-based research reports on how information and communications technology (ICT) was used by each of these staff, all early adopters of new technologies, to enhance their face-to-face teaching, and how this use contributed to an understanding of blended learning in higher education. Across the cases, seven dimensions of blended learning environments were identified - a significant finding of this study. Overall, the study enhances understanding of the nature, purpose and scope of early blended learning approaches in a university setting, and highlights the importance of academics' use of resource-based learning to create blended learning environments across a range of courses. The study also establishes reasons why these teachers embraced the use of ICT in their on-campus teaching, and provides insights into how each perceived their teaching role.

Mohamad Alkutich Examining The Impact of School Inspection On Teaching and Learning. Dubai Private Schools as a Case Study

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: School inspection is one of the most challenging aspects in education; it represents an approach of accountability in teaching and learning. Moreover, school inspection provides policy and decision makers with accurate information about the current state of education in their respective institutions. The main purpose of this study is to examine and determine the impact of school inspection on teaching and learning in Dubai-based private schools, and to give some recommendations into how to conduct effective school inspection that would positively influence teaching and learning. This research included 37 participants; 2 inspectors, 4 head-teachers and 31 teachers, from 4 private schools, who follow different types of curricula, from all grades of performance according to inspection reports conducted in the 2014/2015 academic year. The findings show that school inspection has a significant role in school improvement, especially in teaching and learning. Teachers acknowledge the feedback that inspectors give to them. However, school inspection also has a negative impact on teaching and learning; for instance, it forces some schools to show activities they have never done before. Moreover, the school inspection reports and recommendations, in some cases, are superficial and are not related to the school context; moreover, they often do not show teac...

Over the last few years, multi-touch mobile devices have become increasingly common. However, very few applications in the context of 3D geometry learning can be found in app stores. Manipulating a 3D scene with a 2D device is the main difficulty of such applications. Throughout this book, the author focuses on allowing young students to manipulate, observe and modify 3D scenes using new technologies brought about by digital tablets. Through a user-centered approach, the author proposes a grammar of interactions adapted to young learners, and then evaluates acceptability, ease of use and ease of learning of the interactions proposed. Finally, the author studies in situ the pedagogic benefits of the use of tablets with an app based on the suggested grammar. The results show that students are able to manipulate, observe and modify 3D scenes using an adapted set of interactions. Moreover, in the context of 3D geometry learning, a significant contribution has been observed in two classes when students use such an application. The approach here focuses on interactions with digital tablets to increase learning rather than on technology. First, defining which interactions allow pupils to realize tasks needed in the learning process, then, evaluating the impact of these interactions on the learning process. This is the first time that both interactions and the learning process have been taken into account at the same time.

Justin Rose Drum Major Instinct. Martin Luther King Jr..s Theory of Political Service

Though there are several studies devoted to aspects of Martin Luther King Jr.'s intellectual thought, there has been no comprehensive study of his overarching theory of political service. In The Drum Major Instinct, Justin Rose draws on Martin Luther King Jr.'s sermons, political speeches, and writings to construct and conceptualize King's politics as a unified theory.Rose argues that King's theoretical framework--as seen throughout his wide body of writings--has three central components. First, King posited that all of humanity is tied to an "inescapable network of mutuality" such that no member of society can fully flourish if there are structural barriers preventing others from flourishing. Second, King's theory required that Americans cultivate a sense of love and concern for their fellow members of society, which would motivate them to work collectively toward transforming others and structures of injustice. Finally, King contended that all members of society have the responsibility to participate in collective forms of resistance. This meant that even the oppressed were obligated to engage in political service. Therefore, marginalized people's struggles against injustice were considered an essential aspect of service.Taken together, King's theory of political service calls on all Americans, but especially black Americans, to engage in other-centered, collective action aimed at transforming themselves, others, and structures of injusti...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2012 in the subject English - Miscellaneous, , course: Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages, language: English, abstract: This research aims to find out whether there is any impact on performance when students read authentic materials beside the textbooks. Students in Bangladesh often have difficulties in learning English as a foreign language for lack of appropriate learning materials in the classroom. Too often foreign language teaching texts in our country are designed either too difficult or too easy for students. Without appropriate texts that suit them, learners spend long hours in the classroom accomplishing very little in the long run. Most of them remain weak in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English properly even after receiving higher education. Students' performance varies according to the type of materials given to them. A significant amount of research shows that there is something about the type of textbooks/materials that should be looked into and evaluated carefully so that necessary adaptation can be made for effective learning to take place. When learners are introduced to variety of materials, it is necessary to understand what impact they have on the learners.

This manual meets the first aid training needs of individual service members. Because medical personnel will not always be readily available, the nonmedical service members must rely heavily on their own skills and knowledge of life-sustaining methods to survive on the integrated battlefield. This publication outlines both self-aid and aid to other service members (buddy aid). More importantly, it emphasizes prompt and effective action in sustaining life and preventing or minimizing further suffering and disability. First aid is the emergency care given to the sick, injured, or wounded before being treated by medical personnel. The term first aid can be defined as "urgent and immediate lifesaving and other measures, which can be performed for casualties by nonmedical personnel when medical personnel are not immediately available." Nonmedical service members have received basic first aid training and should remain skilled in the correct procedures for giving first aid.

Janette Barrington Learning Teams - A communities-of-practice approach to faculty development and university course design

We have intuitive knowledge that more heads are better than one in instructional decision-making, now we have empirical evidence. The traditional model of faculty development is workshops and one-on-one consultations. Situated learning theory suggests we move out of the classroom and into authentic, collaborative, problem-based work situations. This is what learning teams do. Learning teams emphasize collective responsibility for student learning. Teams are composed so that professors deliberate on course decisions with a strategic group of people - crossing boundaries we may not even know exist. They represent a proactive model for faculty development with course design as a vehicle for change. This book tells the story of a learning team that met for one year, generating and reflecting on the results of three design iterations. Grounded theory analysis of interviews with participants generated a conceptual model with a core concept captured in the phrase "a systematic way of talking to each other." Learning teams will be of interest to university administrators, faculty, staff, and graduate students interested in new ways of working together to improve student learning.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar II), language: English, abstract: This essay, which will be focusing on the psychological processes involved in learning the meaning of nouns and verbs will be based entirely on books and articles representing the emergentist/constructivist approach. Especially, for the part on learning nouns, an emergentist model called The Emergentist Coalition Model, developed and described by George Hollich, Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Roberta Michnick Golinkoff (2000), will stand in the focus. It regards early word learning as a process of incremental knowledge construction, where each step on this path changes or reshapes the child's cognitive system and provides it with new equipment for the task of further word learning. The second part, dealing with the acquisition of verbs, is based primarily on texts by Ewa Dabrowska (2009) and Gilette et al. (1999), which treat word learning cross-categorically, focusing on properties of words beyond the category level, especially their concreteness, imageability and their semantic and syntactic properties. Finally, some suggestions will be made as to how the psycholinguistic insights presented so far can be put to use in school, in service of second language teaching.
