The invasion of Acacia mearnsii in the Kouga catchment, Eastern Cape, South Africa, has various negative impacts on the ecosystem. The native shrubby fynbos vegetation has adapted to the acidic nutrient poor soils and Mediterranean climate of the Kouga Mountains. Fynbos, however, is currently being out competed by the much taller Acacia mearnsii trees, due to their competitive nature and ability to fix nitrogen, thereby enriching the soil. The invaded sections of the valley bottoms and lower hill slopes are characterised by an almost complete monoculture of Acacia mearnsii, with very few fynbos species still present. The work looks at the influence of the invasion on soil properties, vegetation structure and soil erosion. It further explore how these changes change over time since clearing.

During the nineteenth century, ivory hunting caused a substantial decrease of elephant numbers in southern Africa. Soon after that, populations of many other large and medium-sized herbivores went into steep decline due to the rinderpest pandemic in the 1890s. These two events provided an opportunity for woodland establishment in areas previously intensively utilized by elephants and other herbivores. The return of elephants to currently protected areas of their former range has greatly influenced vegetation locally and the resulting potential negative effects on biodiversity are causing concern among stakeholders, managers, and scientists. This book focuses on the ecological effects of the increasing elephant population in northern Botswana, presenting the importance of the elephants for the heterogeneity of the system, and showing that elephant ecology involves much wider spatiotemporal scales than was previously thought. Drawing on the results of their research, the authors discuss elephant-caused effects on vegetation in nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor savannas, and the potential competition between elephants on the one hand and browsers and mixed feeders on the other. Ultimately this text provides a comprehensive review of ecological processes in African savannas, covering long-term ecosystem changes and human-wildlife conflicts. It summarises new knowledge on the ecology of the sub-humid African savanna ecosystems to advance the general functional understanding of savanna ecosystems across moisture and nutrient gradients.

Consequently, downstream flows have now reduced to zero during dry season, thus causing great effects to the riparian vegetation. The severity of the effects has necessitated the adoption of mitigation measures. This book describes measures taken to mitigate the effects of water abstraction on riparian vegetation of Bwathonaro river. With increase in management efforts, the results showed progressive amplification on timing and duration of river flow peaking and retrogressive behavior of riparian vegetation. The results are useful for planning and decision making on viable measures which can reduce the effects of water abstraction on the riparian vegetation of rivers with similar characteristics.

The study of unsaturated soil is a practical subject, linking fundamental science to nature. Soils in general are inherently variable and their behaviour is not easy to analyse or predict, and unsaturated soils raise the complexity to a higher level. Even amongst practicing engineers, there is often lack of awareness of the intricacies of the subject. This book offers a perspective of unsaturated soils based on recent research and demonstrates how this dovetails with the general discipline of soil mechanics. Following an introduction to the basic soil variables, the phases, the phase interactions and the relevance of soil structure, an up-to-date review of laboratory testing techniques is presented. This includes suction measurement and control techniques in triaxial cell testing. This is followed by an introduction to stress state variables, critical state and theoretical models in unsaturated soils. A detailed description of the thermodynamic principles as applied to multi-phase materials under equilibrium conditions follows. These principles are then used to explore and develop a fundamental theoretical basis for analysing unsaturated soils. Soil structure is broken down into its component parts to develop equations describing the dual stress regime. The critical state strength and compression characteristics of unsaturated soils are examined and it is shown how the behaviour may be viewed as a three-dimensional model in dimensionless stress-volume space. The analysis is then extended to the work input into unsaturated soils and the development of conjugate stress, volumetric and strain-increment variables. These are used to examine the micromechanical behaviour of kaolin specimens subjected to triaxial shear strength tests and lead to observations not detectable by other means. This work investigates the impacts of the effluents and other wastes of a Textile Mill on quality of soil and water in the surrounding areas. Some specific impacts on soil and water quality have been identified. For example, the soil was getting enriched with both ionic matter and hydrophobic organic matter, which had important consequences. The soil became enriched with the trace metals, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The quality of the drinking water in and around the textile mill did reflect the changes in the physico-chemical quality of the soil. The water was characterized by considerable presence of the cations, Ca, Mg, Na and K, being compensated by comparative presence of the anions, Cl, NO3 and SO4. The toxic organic contaminant, phenol, was present in some of the drinking water sources. The water was contaminated with Mn, Ni, and Pb, and also fluoride. The rice crop grown in the study area had accumulated appreciable amounts of metals in them as seen from the analysis of rice grains and husks. Significantly, the husks were seen to be richer in the metals than the grains with one or two exceptions.

Study of soils and their moisture content is one such area where Remote Sensing has wide applications. However, study of soils was not attractive until the advent of Hyper-spectral/Multi- spectral Imaging by satellite sensors, which provides reflectance information across the different contiguous spectral bands. The large amount of information in these bands served as features in the classification of soils. A spectral library of the different type of soils at different moisture levels serves as a reference for the purpose. However, a satellite sensor is designed to meet multiple criteria, which restricts the number of spectral bands that can be used and their resolution. Moreover, not all features contribute to classification. Hence, it becomes mandatory the optimal combination of the spectral bands is selected for a satisfactory classification of soils and the estimation of their moisture content. This work compares the performance of a hybrid algorithm, made by combining two sub-optimal methods, with the performances of the other classical algorithms for feature selection.

The data analyzed from the study were based on objectives and research questions. These were to identify the major climate change impacts in the region, to identify the major causes of wetland degradation, identify the forms of wetland degradation and to examine the influence of climate change impacts on wetland water resources. Data was collected in all the three parishes using systematic random sampling among the farmers. Observation and use of transect walks across the wetland were the major ways of data collection where two plot of 200m one within the wetland and one on the flanking hill. A random sample of 25 respondents was selected for interview purposes.It was mainly found out that, the environmental change impacts involved both the climate change and all the land degradation processes that threaten the existence of water resources in the wetland which is increasingly becoming a threat in the area. This book describes the key factors of particle morphology quantification and its characteristics that govern the interparticle behaviour of granular soils. A standardised and cost effective method of quantifying particle shape parameters has not been widely recognised yet, therefore the methods are still being debated today. In this booklet, explanation of a new approach of particle shape classification was presented. Cluster and statistical analysis was used to find a single representative value of the particle shape parameters from 5 different sand samples. With that, the behaviour of the shear strength and dilatancy parameters of granular soils was able to be understood clearly. Thus, this contributes in improving the fundamental understanding on the development of parametric correlations on the strength behaviour of sands based on the new methods of particle morphology classification.

An understanding of the mechanical properties of unsaturated soils is crucial for geotechnical engineers worldwide, as well as to those concerned with the interaction of structures with the ground. This book deals principally with fine-grained clays and silts, or soils containing coarser sand and gravel particles but with a significant percentage of fines. The study of unsaturated soil is a practical subject, linking fundamental science to nature. Soils in general are inherently variable and their behaviour is not easy to analyse or predict, and unsaturated soils raise the complexity to a higher level. Even amongst practicing engineers, there is often lack of awareness of the intricacies of the subject. This book offers a perspective of unsaturated soils based on recent research and demonstrates how this dovetails with the general discipline of soil mechanics. Following an introduction to the basic soil variables, the phases, the phase interactions and the relevance of soil structure, an up-to-date review of laboratory testing techniques is presented. This includes suction measurement and control techniques in triaxial cell testing. This is followed by an introduction to stress state variables, critical state and theoretical models in unsaturated soils. A detailed description of the thermodynamic principles as applied to multi-phase materials under equilibrium conditions follows. These principles are then used to explore and develop a fundamental theoretical basis for analysing unsaturated soils. Soil structure is broken down into its component parts to develop equations describing the dual stress regime. The critical state strength and compression characteristics of unsaturated soils are examined and it is shown how the behaviour may be viewed as a three-dimensional model in dimensionless stress-volume space. The analysis is then extended to the work input into unsaturated soils and the development of conjugate stress, volumetric and strain-increment variables. These are used to examine the micromechanical behaviour of kaolin specimens subjected to triaxial shear strength tests and lead to observations not detectable by other means. Unsaturated Soils: A fundamental interpretation of soil behaviour covers a rapidly advancing area of study, research and engineering practice and offers a deeper appreciation of the key characteristics of unsaturated soil.
