High stakes testing, standards, and accountability politics is taking us away from the importance of the affectivedomain in curriculum development. This critical learning domain is often an unrecognized and infrequentlyconsidered topic in the literature. Through this book we extend the current knowledge base byaddressing a curriculum model developed in the 1980s. We add a 2012 knowledge base as we delineate therole of self-perceptions in school-related learning, how middle level curriculum affects self-perceptions, andthe type of curriculum planning which enhances self-perceptions and improves learning in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. The combination of sound psychological principles and practical teaching and curriculum suggestions with an empirical basis makes the book attractiveto both higher education and local school professional libraries. In the former it will serve as the primary text in graduate and advanced undergraduatemiddle level education programs and practices courses. It might also be a primary text in courses or workshops in affective education or otherexperiences which emphasize affective, values, and self-concept. It also has potential as a supplementary text in undergraduate educational psychologycourses. At the in-service level this book could be used as a workshop resource or as a professional reference for middle level teachers, administrators, curriculum workers, and supervisors. Our interest in young adolescents and their school setti...

Education systems can be centralised or decentralized. When an education system is centralised, broad policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures are centrally determined. As a result, school based interpretation of the policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures become crucial. Successful curriculum implementation therefore depends to a large extent on the teachers. As the key actors in curriculum implementation, teachers know what works best in the teaching and learning process. This then calls for high teacher participation in school based interpretation of the guiding frameworks. In this book an investigation into teacher involvement in curriculum implementation decisions at primary school level is presented. The findings revealed gaps in teacher involvement and recommendations point towards the need for deliberate full engagement of teachers since they are key implementers of the curriculum.

A volume inEducational Policy in the 21st Century: Opportunities, Challenges and SolutionsSeries Editor: Bruce A. Jones , University of HoustonOver the past 30 years our public school system has received an unprecedented amount of attention as thisconcerns methods of school reform and policy strategies for bringing about this reform. During the 1980s theemphasis of school reform was on transparency through school-community partnerships. Business andphilanthropy, for example, became involved with issues of schooling that was unheard of prior to this period. The1980s also gave rise to issues of school finance and student performance that went beyond traditional views that tended to focus on finance"adequacy" to views that focused more on school finance arrangements that would lead to actual "equitable outcomes" in student performance. The 1990s witnessed the emergence of the comprehensive school reform movement whereby curriculum outsourcing occurred at rates that hadnever occurred before. With this movement, the role of teachers and school leaders in the creation of school curriculum diminished as schooldistricts increasingly purchased vendor-related curriculum packages, which included teacher and leader training modules and methods ofcurriculum assessment. On the heels of the increasing tendency of school districts to outsource school curriculum to curriculum-vendors came a risein demands for school accountability and school outcomes. This was particularly evid...

The CAPS is the South African curriculum which aims to address the challenges that were experienced as a result of the implementation of the National Curriculum Statement. After consultation with stakeholders and considering the concerns raised by the teachers at the implementation level, the Department of Basic Education decided to review the National Curriculum Statement in order to address the issues of workload, teacher confusion and the poor performance by learners. The study revealed that teachers employed various methods in implementing the curriculum at a classroom level although some aspects of the curricular spider web do not appear in their lesson preparations and lesson presentations as stated in the CAPS document and as indicated by various scholars. Teachers still apply the NCS approach when teaching the CAPS because they are not aware that the NCS was a competence curriculum whereas the CAPS is a performance curriculum. The findings of this study may assist the Department of Education, curriculum designers and managers in strengthening the support based on improved methodology.

Before working on this segment of the study, causes of primary school dropout were explored. Primary school dropouts, their parents and teachers were surveyed for this purpose. In the light of all reported causes, an inclusive schooling model was being proposed which can help Pakistani stakeholders to eradicate the causes of dropout and prevent the children from dropping out before completion of primary education. They may become potential learners for high school education and perform better socially, morally, economically and politically in the society. This model primarily focuses on professional, school and social transformation for the improvement of existing schools. A plan of implementation from federal level to school level was also proposed. This model is pedestaled on United Nation's and other international declarations as well as The Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (1973).

Dougherty, University of MississippiThe purpose of this book is to document the work of the Show-Me Project (1997-2007) and to highlight lessonslearned about curriculum implementation. Although the Show-Me Project was charged with promotingthe dissemination and implementation of four distinct comprehensive curriculum programs (Connected Mathematics,Mathematics in Context, MathScape, and MathThematics), most of the lessons learned from this workare not curriculum specific. Rather, they cut across the four programs and share commonalities with standards-based curriculum reform at any level. We believe that documenting these lessons learned will be one of the legacies of the Show-Me ProjectWe anticipate that the comprehensive nature of this work will attract readers from multiple audiences that include state and district mathematics supervisors, middle grades mathematics teachers and administrators involved in curriculum reform, as well as mathematics teacher educators. Those aboutto embark on the review of curriculum materials will appreciate reading about the processes employed by other districts. Readers with interests in aparticular curriculum program will be able to trace the curriculum-specific chapters to gain insights into how the design of the curricula relate to professionaldevelopment, adoption and implementation issues, and teachers' personal experience using the curriculum materials. In this book Oddrun M. H. Bråten set out to utilise and test her methodology for comparative religious education. This synthesises two sets of ideas. The first includes supranational, national and subnational processes. Formal supranational processes refer to international (educational) policymaking in international organisations. Informal supranational processes include secularisation, pluralisation and globalisation. Subnational processes refer to variations between regions within a country. The second set of ideas concerns the societal, institutional, instructional and experiential levels of curriculum. They are affected by supranational, national and subnational processes. In discussing the societal level, attention needs to be given to the histories of religion, state and school in each country. Research at the institutional level involves analysis of relevant policy documents and legislation in each country, while research at the instructional level involves analysis of how teachers interpret, plan and teach the curriculum, while the experiential level researches how students interact with one-another and with teachers to develop their understanding. A third set of ideas includes Bråten's use of Schiffauer and collaborators' concepts of social/national imaginary and civil enculturation. These concepts help in grasping the historical and sociological depth of national traditions. This publication is a groundbreaking study in the methodology of comparative religious...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Sociology - Knowledge and Information, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Social and Human Studies), course: Doctorate in Education, language: English, abstract: The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of individual student affective factors and educational background on mathematics achievement among higher education students as measured by semester grades in the core mathematics courses. Student Locus of Control, Self-Efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were the specific individual student affective factors that were examined in the study. Educational backgrounds of the students were examined as an attempt to explain the differences in mathematics performance at the higher education level. To achieve this, high school teacher characteristics and instructional practices in influencing students' affective factors were examined. All of the analyses presented were performed on data collected for the study from two institutions of higher education in Cameroon for the student participants and from high school mathematics teachers of the English-Speaking and the French-Speaking subsystems of education. The results of the study show that student internal locus of control, high mathematics self-efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were associated with performance in mathematics at the higher education level. A volume in the series: Research in Mathematics Education. Series Editor(s): Barbara J. Dougherty, Iowa State UniversityIn response to No Child Let Behind, states have developed mathematics curriculum frameworks that outline their intended curriculum for grades K-8. While some have indicated that districts or individual schools may use their framework as a model for specific curricular programs, others have taken a more prescriptive or even mandatory stance. Collectively, these frameworks present a sense of the national mathematics program and what we expect students learn. This volume follows The Intended Curriculum as Represented in State Mathematics Curriculum Standards: Consensus or Confusion? (Reys). While the Reys volume focused on number and operations, algebra and reasoning strands, the Smith volume analyzes geometry, measurement, probability, and statistics strands. It also presents an analysis what verbs used tell us about the cognitive demand of grade level expectations. This volume, even more than the Reys volume, emphasizes the theme of variability in the content, expression, and clarity of grade level expectations across the states. As the nation moves toward implementation of the Common Core Standards, this volume highlights some of the challenges teachers and other school personnel face in interpreting mathematics grade-level standards as goals for classroom teaching. The shift from 50 state standards to one document does not resolve this basic challenge.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Pedagogy - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, grade: A, Moi University (Main campus), course: Education curriculum, language: English, abstract: Cooperating teachers provide the guidance sought by teacher trainees when they are away from college in the practicing schools and in the absence of the college tutors. This study sought to establish the extent to which this mentorship role is played by analyzing the mentoring relationship between cooperating primary school teachers and teacher trainees during teaching practice. The objectives of the study were to find out how the cooperating primary school teachers mentored the teacher trainees on: schemes of work and lesson plans; selection and application of instructional methods; lesson presentation and on professional ethics. The theoretical frame work used was based on developmental supervision theory by Glickman (2003). The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. It targeted cooperating teachers from 26 public primary schools from Kakamega and Vihiga Counties in Western Kenya and the student teacher trainees of Eregi and Kaimosi Teachers College who had undertaken teaching practice in the targeted primary schools. Two cooperating teachers who had handled teacher trainees during teaching practice for at least one year were selected from the schools through simple random sampling. For teacher trainees, focus was on approximately 1000 second year st...

A volume in Research in Mathematics EducationSeries Editor Barbara J. Dougherty, Iowa State UniversityThe study reported in this volume adds to the growing body of evaluation studies that focus on the use ofNSF-funded Standards-based high school mathematics curricula. Most previous evaluations have studied theimpact of field-test versions of a curriculum. Since these innovative curricula were so new at the time ofmany of these studies, students and teachers were relative novices in their use. These earlier studies weremainly one year or less in duration. Students in the comparison groups were typically from schools in whichsome classes used a Standards-based curriculum and other classes used a conventional curriculum, rather than using the Standards-based curriculumwith all students as curriculum developers intended. This volume reports one of the first studies of the efficacy of Standards-based mathematics curricula with all of the following characteristics:· The study focused on fairly stable implementations of a first-edition Standards-based high school mathematics curriculum thatwas used by all students in each of three schools.· It involved students who experienced up to seven years of Standards-based mathematics curricula and instruction in middle schooland high school.· It monitored students’ mathematical achievement, beliefs, and attitudes for four years of high school and one year after graduation.Prior to the study, many of the teachers had one or more years of exper...

A volume in Curriculum WindowsSeries Editor: Thomas S. Poetter, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio,Curriculum Windows: What Curriculum Theorists of the 1980s Can Teach Us about Schools and Society Today is an effort by students of curriculum studies, along with their professor, to interpret and understand curriculum texts and theorists of the 1980s in contemporary terms. The authors explore how key books/authors from the curriculum field of the 1980s illuminate new possibilities forward for us as scholar educators today: How might the theories, practices, and ideas wrapped up in curriculum texts of the 1980s still resonate with us, allow us to see backward in time and forward in time - all at the same time? How might these figurative windows of insight, thought, ideas, fantasy, and fancy make us think differently about curriculum, teaching, learning, students, education, leadership, and schools? Further, how might they help us see more clearly, even perhaps put us on a path to correct the mistakes and missteps of intervening decades and of today? The chapter authors and editor revisit and interpret several of the most important works in the curriculum field of the 1980s. The book's Foreword is by renowned curriculum theorist William H. Schubert.

Curriculum materials are among the most pervasive and powerful influences on schoolmathematics. In many mathematics classes, student assignments, the questions theteacher asks, the ways students are grouped, the forms of assessment, and much moreoriginate in curriculum materials. At the same time, teachers have considerable latitude inhow they use their curriculum materials. Two classes making use of the same materialsmay differ markedly in what mathematics content is emphasized and how students are engaged in learning that content. This volume considers a variety of research tools for investigating the enactment of mathematics curriculum materials, describing the conceptualization, development, and uses of seven sets of tools. Mathematics education researchers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, district supervisors, teacher leaders, and math coaches will find insights that canimprove their work, and guidance for selecting, adapting, and using tools for understanding the complex relationshipbetween curriculum materials and their enactment in classroom instruction.
