Previous research addressing leadership has traditionally adopted a single approach (i.e., traits, skills, or behaviors). This study fills this gap in the literature by adopting an integrative perspective of the leadership theory. To address the question of “how are some leaders more effective than others,” an exploratory mixed method approach was used, comprised of a qualitative study to provide the researcher with meaningful insights on the topic, and a quantitative study to confirm the main findings of the exploratory stage. Overall, the results give a substantive support for an integrative model of leadership effectiveness, contribute to the theoretical debate on how leadership effectiveness can sustain organizational performance, and help managers understand the effective leadership process inside organizations.

The Knowledge, Practices, and Learning of Leadership Coaches

The No Child Left Behind law of 2001 left schools failing to make Annual Yearly Progress for three consecutive years facing serious consequences, including job loss, restructuring, or closure. Schools receiving Title I funding were especially vulnerable to the sanctions because of their high rates of students in poverty and inequity of achievement based on ethnicity. In order to support schools in jeopardy, one Midwest state identified the lowest performing Title I schools to receive assistance from the State System of Support. Support involved receiving an experienced leadership coach to develop the school principal's capabilities to lead underperforming schools towards improving instruction, thus improving student achievement. Although the use of leadership coaches is a common practice for improving business executives' capacities, limited literature existed on using the practice with school principals, and no literature existed on how leadership coaches actually coach principals in the process. This book provides a qualitative analysis of the effectiveness of leadership coaching in school settings using coaches' voice to narrate the knowledge, practices, and learning of coaches.

This book is chiefly devoted to investigate the relationship between and among gender, leadership style preference, and effectiveness in leadership by examining the leadership of primary schools of Ethiopia. Often time people attach certain leadership styles only to males, such as autocratic style and free-rein style, and some other to females, such as democratic style. Another issue is that there is predetermined assumption in the society that pertains to considering males as being capable of confronting challenges, emotionally stable, confident and thus effective in leadership while females are commonly considered as sensitive, emotional, unable to stand challenges and hence ineffective in leadership. Therefore the book has addressed these and other pertinent issues of leadership in depth.

The research has not supported the theory that (a) subordinates’ preferences and expectations for ethical leadership or (b) the perceived ethical climate of an organization moderated the relationship between a leader’s ethical leadership behaviors and the perceived leader’s effectiveness. Additional research is encouraged that assists academics and practitioners in determining how these combined leadership qualities may be further developed in leaders to add to their overall effectiveness. This book basically investigates principal's leadership impact on students academic achievement. It examines how principal leadership is meaningfully related to students' learning and their academic achievement levels. The book also explores how contextual situations, cultural differences and environment might constitute a significant fact in informing and impacting the effectiveness of the leadership engagement of the principal in the learning environment. This book recognizes that leadership styles and approaches employed by principals in their work are many and varied. It observes too that the application effectiveness these leadership styles can be shaped by the needs and expectation of the specific situations and environment of operation. The book then argues, against this recognition, that the dichotomy often drawn between effective leadership styles and ineffective ones may be nonexistent. As such, the book notes that the situational needs and differences, cultural and environmental expectations and nuances define the application effectiveness of principal leadership styles in the learning environment.

The last decade has seen numerous researches on organizational best practices especially as it relates to improving government services. Yet, there seems to be a disconnect between employers and employees within public sector organizations. The purpose of this book, therefore, is to fill that gap by examining the relationship between specific transformational leadership traits, organizational culture types and organizational performance in public sector organizations. The second purpose of this book is to present empirical evidence which suggests that the effectiveness of an organization’s relationship between its leadership style and performance is contingent upon the form of organizational culture that is present. The book analyzed distinct transformational leadership traits, investigated specific culture types and assessed their impact on the attributes of organizational performance. The findings should help clarify the dysfunctions within government and be especially useful to professionals in both private and public sector organizations.

Linking Development to Transformational Leadership

Revision with unchanged content. Leadership development facilitators and executive coaches address leaders’ developmental needs to better perform at the executive level. In developmental programs for example, facilitators teach with the expectation that leaders will adopt a transformational leadership (TL) mindset within the program to later enact TL behaviours within their home organizational environment. This is a short-term solution when addressing leadership needs. A deeper understanding of one’s level of personal development is instead necessary to unlock potential TL abilities. In this book, four leaders are extensively studied to determine the relationship between their level of personal ego development and TL effectiveness. Even while the results yield significantly different “snapshots” of leadership behaviours, these leaders' profiles provide a platform from which to further explore the complexities of TL theory and help us to understand how one’s TL effectiveness may or may not be related to one’s ego development. This book is addressed to leadership consultants or coaches of both profit and non-profit organizations interested in leadership development topics. This book is also addressed to leadership researchers who are interested in exploring leadership from both subjective and objective paradigms.

Equally, negotiations success constitutes a key distinguishing factor separating developed countries from the developing and under-developed ones. Available literature and previous research on leadership and negotiations reveals a historical tendency to deal with these topics separately. Thus, while the two topics have each been researched extensively, the number of studies dealing with leadership and negotiations as concomitant variables in the same study is limited. This book reports on a leadership style and negotiation success investigation involving negotiators. The multiple regression results from the analysis of variance (ANOVA and MANOVA), and other multivariate tests revealed leadership style as a strong predictor of negotiations success.

Leadership: An Islamic Perspective

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. In terms of the leadership study’s approach it can be said that the concept of leadership in Islam is closer to the concept of ‘leadership as a process’ with the integrated approaches between the ‘leadership as a power relationship’ and ‘a leadership as a transformation process’ where the leader is seen as a person who has the power to effect change in others, and the same time the leader is also regarded as a person who can move followers to accomplish more than usually expected of them. This means the effectiveness of leadership depends not only on a person’s special character but also on the existence of the party which receives the action, while the condition of a place also determines the effectiveness of a leader’s action. It is a shared influence process.

Evidence confirms that improving any leadership behavior will have positive effects on employees’ satisfaction and commitment, and, consequently, on an organization’s performance, where people watch their leaders’ behaviors as clues to what is accepted and what is not. Several years ago, the UAE government initiated numerous programs under the so-called ‘Emiratization’ strategy to encourage recruitment of nationals in public and private sectors, which becomes real in the managerial level, and no study has been done on that so far. Thus, this study investigates the leadership behaviors that are exhibited by national leaders in public and private hospitals in the UAE, and examines how performance of organization is linked to these behaviors in terms of five ‘Principles’ and ten ‘Core Concepts’ constituting a Business Excellence Model (BEM) designed by the researcher for the purpose of this study.

School leadership transforming African Schools

Erasmus’ book explored whether the academic achievement of students of disadvantaged rural schools in Ghana can be improved despite funding and resourcing challenges. This was investigated through four case studies of leadership in disadvantaged schools to identify leadership practices, skills and attitudes employed by successful principals to enhance student achievement. The study identified seven elements of effective leadership comprising strategies for improving academic standards in these schools. This study is the first to specifically focus on the role played by Ghanaian principals of disadvantaged rural schools in improving academic achievement. The findings will inform professional learning programs used to enhance principals’ leadership capabilities. This book not only affirmed the import of Western educational scholarship through its erudite literature review but ingeniously established its interconnectedness with specific African educational strategies such as school and local community partnerships for recruiting resources. Be careful when using untrained, non-remunerated volunteer tutors, nicknamed: 'helper teachers' to solve desperate rural under-staffing issues.

Audit Committee's Effectiveness and Financial Reporting Quality

Financial reporting quality has been under scrutiny especially after the collapse of major companies. The main objective of this study is to investigate the audit committee’s effectiveness on the financial reporting quality among the Malaysian GLCs. In particular, the study examined the impact of audit committee characteristics (independence, size, frequency meeting and financial expertise) on earnings management in periods prior to and following the transformation program (2003-2009). Women's health is an economic investment in any country. But, maternal mortality is a daunting effect in many developing countries. Many women are dying because of direct and indirect causes daily. In addition to the mentioned causes, underlying determinants of maternal health have a profound effect on maternal health. Identifying these determinants and assessing the challenges and roles of government leadership in addressing these factors will help the concerned bodies to take immediate measures to improve maternal health, especially in the sub Saharan Africa in which maternal mortality is the highest. Hence, it is not possible to plan development without healthy women community, improving maternal health is becoming a development agenda. Leadership & Change in a Crisis Organization:

A financial service organization implemented the Consolidation Project to offset declines in the economy and operational revenue. This exploratory study examined the relationships between transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles of departmental leaders and their subordinates’ perceived extra effort, leadership effectiveness, satisfaction of leadership, and perception of change in a crisis situation. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Form 5X-Short) survey (Bass & Avolio, 2004), perception of change questions, the full range leadership model (Antonakis, Avolio, & Sivasubramaniam, 2003), and comparative analysis were used to analyze these relationships. The results of this research supported previous studies in that the participating leaders possessed the transformational leadership behaviors required to obtain employee buy-in and sustain the successful implementation of the Consolidation Project. This research through comparative analysis demonstrated the link between transformational leadership style and employee perception in sustaining organizational change success and preventing crisis reoccurrence.

Navi Radjou From Smart to Wise. Acting and Leading with Wisdom

A fresh and timely approach to nurturing wise, resilient, and flexible leadership in a world of growing complexity Leaders tend to obstinately stick to the leadership style that brought them most success in the past, usually one of two extreme styles: functional leadership that focuses on operational excellence or smart leadership that focuses on growth. When a leader's focus is too functional, the organization becomes introverted and can focus too much on bottom-line profitability while missing out on top-line growth opportunities. But when leaders focus too much on smart leadership, the organization may experience quick growth but lose its effectiveness quickly. From Smart to Wise offers a new approach that balances the two styles to achieve a form of wise leadership that is both functional and smart. Drawing on inspiring real-life stories of historical and contemporary wise leaders such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and even Mahatma Gandhi, the authors identify six characteristics of wise leaders and offer a practical framework to help readers develop their own style of wise leadership. Knowledge Leadership : The Art and Science of the Knowledge-based Organization (KMCI Press)

Book DescriptionIn Knowledge Leadership, Cavaleri and Seivert describe the dawning of a new era in which individuals are leading rather than managing knowledge. In the past, many knowledge-based initiatives have failed because leaders underestimated the powerful link between knowledge and performance improvement and also because they mistakenly thought that information was the same as knowledge. Cavaleri and Seivert claim that, while information is a necessary precursor to knowledge, it is not sufficient in itself for improving business performance. The authors describe notable organizations that use the pragmatic knowledge strategies they describe to gain competitive advantage. Pragmatic knowledge is the result of individuals developing a deeper understanding of how (and why) things work best in practice. The process of creating pragmatic knowledge transforms key lessons from systems thinking, total quality management, and organization learning into a powerful new business strategy. To help readers apply the concepts and tools in this book, Cavaleri and Seivert draw on case examples and a decade of original cross-cultural research about knowledge leadership. They also invite readers to use The Knowledge Bias Profile to discover their knowledge leadership style. The book systematically outlines a user-friendly strategy for becoming a knowledge leader and for building high-performing, knowledge-based organizations.* Applies well-respected theories of the learning organization and the knowledge-creating company to improving corporate leadership in the knowledge economy* Based on research with hundreds of managers in the US and Asia* Provides a simple framework for improving leaders knowledge gained from experience
