Daniel Rotzer Momentum Strategies

This thesis investigates price momentum of sector and region indices on the MSCI basis from January 1985 for sectors and January 1970 for re-gions to January 2008 relative to the MSCI World benchmark. It is shown that return continuation can be found for "winner" indices whereas "loser" indices exhibit a return reversal. Winner indices systematically outperform loser indices. The evaluated momentum strategies generate abnormal profits in the overall sample but also in different market environments. Re- turns are correlated with the market environment. A diversified index port-folio does not achieve a better risk-adjusted performance than a single index investment. In the CAPM and Fama-French framework, these mo-mentum profits can not be explained - a statistically significant positive alpha remains. Macroeconomic lagged factors can partly explain momen-tum profits but remain undetermined.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 5,5 (1,5 in GER), University of St. Gallen, course: Doktorandenseminar; Corporate Finance, 49 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Nowadays, modern investors are well informed by Hedge Funds managers who are not getting tired promoting the merit of investing in hedge funds. These advisers draw elaborated graphs showing the benefits of hedge funds to an active managed portfolio. Investors have to believe in the advantages of shifting a significant part of their portfolio to hedge funds. In terms of the classical risk and return measures the advisers are right, high returns, low volatility and above all low correlations to the other asset classes in the portfolio. But as we know only the half is true. The misleading picture of volatility if measured with the classical portfolio instruments and the correlation effects is not solved in this paper. The research interest in this short paper is the distorted picture of returns given by the Hedge Funds Indices because of biases inherent to those indices. This paper gives an overview of the Hedge Funds Industry and the Hedge Funds Indices that are currently used by investors and highlights the differences between Hedge Funds and traditional Mutual Funds Indices. The problems of setting up those indices because of Hedge Fund idiosyncrasies are discussed. It is also shown why the performance of...

Rodgers Achiando Deficiency Indices and Spectra of Fourth Order Differential Operators with Unbounded Coeffcients on a Hilbert space

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Mathematics - Algebra, , language: English, abstract: In this thesis, using asymptotic integration, we have investigated the asymptotic of the eigensolutions and the deficiency indices of fourth order differential operators with unbounded coefficients as well as the location of absolutely continuous spectrum of self-adjoint extension operators. We have mainly endeavored to compute eigenvalues of fourth order differential operators when the coefficients are unbounded, determine the deficiency indices of such differential operator and the location of the absolutely continuous spectrum of the self-adjoint extension operator together with their spectral multiplicity. Results obtained for deficiency indices were in the range (2, 2) ≤ defT ≤ (4, 4) under different growth and decay conditions of co-efficients.The concept of unbounded operators provides an abstract framework for dealing with differential operators and unbounded observable such as in quantum mechanics. The theory of unbounded operators was developed by John Von Neumann in the late 1920s and early 1930s in an effort to solve problems related to quantum mechanics and other physical observables. This has provided the background on which other scholars have developed their work in differential operators. Higher order differential operators as defined on Hilbert spaces have received much attention though there still lays the problem of computing the eigenvalues of these ...

Sedation is a procedure that makes use of sedative medications to produce a relaxed experience for the patient. The central nervous system (CNS) is affected through the use of drugs, including tranquilizers and anxiolytics, that can be administered to the patient in several ways. Sedation dentistry has several benefits, both for dentists and patients. For patients, it can mean freedom from anxiety or fear during dental procedures. In cases where a patient has not been able to undergo dental treatment for many years because of this fear, sedation dentistry allows him to have several years' worth of dental treatment in just a few sessions. For dentists, sedation dentistry facilitates the easy performance of dental procedures. Patients are likely to be more cooperative under the relaxing effects of sedation. Treatments can also be quicker, because a number of procedures can be performed in a single session. Dental nurses play a vital role in assisting the dentist in the routine sedation of patients. In acknowledgement of this, the NEBDN run a post-qualification certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing that provides the dental nurse with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to carry out their role safely and competently. The ‘Basic Guide to Dental Sedation Nursing' is a must have book for all dental nurses seeking to develop their knowledge and understanding of this core area of clinical practice. Written in a clear and accessible style, chapters reflect the Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing syllabus with chapters on such key topics as legal aspects, anatomy, equipment, patient assessment, types of sedation, medical emergencies and resuscitation. Joseph R Krecioch Human Craniofacial Variation and Dental Anomalies. An anthropological investigation into the relationship between human craniometric variation and the expression of orthodontic anomalies

Dental anomalies of number, shape, and position are frequently analysed in the orthodontic and clinical literature but are rarely discussed in an anthropological or archaeological context. Dental anomalies and occlusal disorders are often hypothesised to be the result of a modern, urbanised lifestyle as a response to reduced masticatory stress and subsequent crowding of the dentition. This study of skulls from Classical to medieaval Macedonia and England examines the relationship between craniofacial variation and the expression of dental anomalies. Standard craniometric measurements were taken to estimate relative sizes of cranial functional complexes and determine whether or not, or to what extent, changes in the shape or size of these variables were associated with the expression of dental anomalies.Statistical analyses determined that the null hypothesis, that there is no relationship between craniometrics and dental anomalies, can be rejected. A number of dental anomalies were found to have a relationship with reduced sizes in cranial and masticatory elements, although dental crowding was not as significant a factor in masticatory complex reduction. A cause and effect relationship cannot be determined but the data presented here suggests that both heredity and environmental causes may be influential in the expression of dental anomalies.

This Manuscript is about a mosquito-borne viral disease that have a great impact in livestock and humans in Africa. The disease was first characterized by Daubney and his co-workers, Hudson and Garnham in 1934, while working at the Veterinary Research Laboratory at Kabete in Kenya. The work is on Molecular epidemiology of Rift Valley fever (RVF) and its socio-economic impacts. The manuscript gives a good overview on the molecular epidemiology of RVF using serum samples that were collected during the 2006/07 outbreaks in different areas of Tanzania. The socio-economic part uses the same outbreak to try to describe the effects that were associated with the outbreaks. The findings have shown that there were viruses of RVF circulating in the country that affected animals as well as human leading socio-economic effect at individual and national level.

The phenomenon of adhesion is of cardinal importance in the pharmaceutical, biomedical and dental fields. A few eclectic examples will suffice to underscore the importance/relevance of adhesion in these three areas. For example, the adhesion between powdered solids is of crucial importance in tablet manufacture. The interaction between biodevices (e.g., stents, bio-implants) and body environment dictates the performance of such devices, and there is burgeoning research activity in modifying the surfaces of such implements to render them compatible with bodily components. In the field of dentistry, the modern trend is to shift from retaining of restorative materials by mechanical interlocking to adhesive bonding. This unique book addresses all these three areas in an easily accessible single source. The book contains 15 chapters written by leading experts and is divided into four parts: General Topics; Adhesion in Pharmaceutical Field; Adhesion in Biomedical Field; and Adhesion in Dental Field. The topics covered include: – Theories or mechanisms of adhesion. – Wettability of powders. – Role of surface free energy in tablet strength and powder flow behavior. – Mucoadhesive polymers for drug delivery systems. – Transdermal patches. – Skin adhesion in long-wear cosmetics. – Factors affecting microbial adhesion. – Biofouling and ways to mitigate it. – Adhesion of coatings on surgical tools and bio-implants. – Adhesion in fabrication of microarrays in clinical diagnostics. – Antibacterial polymers for dental adhesives and composites. – Evolution of dental adhesives. – Testing of dental adhesives joints.

Burhan Ahmad, Shahid Mahmood Observed, Simulated and Projected Extreme Climate Indices over Pakistan

This research explores observed, simulated, and projected extreme climate indices from a selection of different GCMs from CMIP5 ensemble for Pakistan at province level. The extreme indices for observed, simulated and projected climate are found and analysed on provincial basis over the country. Pakistan has been facing shortages in both the power and water sector which are the lifelines of the country. Significant increases in the maximum and minimum temperatures over the country may affect such sectors drastically. Considerable increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, coupled with erratic monsoon rains may cause frequent and intense floods and droughts in the region. Rising temperatures resulting in enhanced heat and water-stressed conditions, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, may lead to reduced agricultural productivity. This report shall bring added value to all stakeholders and policy makers in determining the hazards that extreme climate has brought in the past and may bring in the near future.

Air abrasion technique has been in use since 1940's. It lost its popularity against the traditional dental drill as amalgam was the most popular restorative material then and air abrasion lacked the ability to prepare cavity margins accurately. With the emergence of Minimal intervention philosophy and introduction of adhesive restorative dental materials, air abrasion has experienced a rebirth. Air abrasion works on the principle of kinetic energy and utilizes alumina particles to abrade the surface. Alumina particles are effective in cutting but could be toxic if inhaled. Therefore this book explains a study in which bioactive glasses were used to successfully replace alumina in the air abrasion system. These bioactive glasses were hard enough to cut cavities in teeth and were also able to form apatite in vitro. Dental researchers can utilize the knowledge from this book to replace alumina in the air abrasion system by the bioactive glasses which are more useful and dental practitioners can learn, how to effectively utilize air abrasion technique in their practices as an alternative to dental drill and provide their patients with a fearless dental experience.

A one-stop guide for public health students and practitioners learning the applications of classical regression models in epidemiology This book is written for public health professionals and students interested in applying regression models in the field of epidemiology. The academic material is usually covered in public health courses including (i) Applied Regression Analysis, (ii) Advanced Epidemiology, and (iii) Statistical Computing. The book is composed of 13 chapters, including an introduction chapter that covers basic concepts of statistics and probability. Among the topics covered are linear regression model, polynomial regression model, weighted least squares, methods for selecting the best regression equation, and generalized linear models and their applications to different epidemiological study designs. An example is provided in each chapter that applies the theoretical aspects presented in that chapter. In addition, exercises are included and the final chapter is devoted to the solutions of these academic exercises with answers in all of the major statistical software packages, including STATA, SAS, SPSS, and R. It is assumed that readers of this book have a basic course in biostatistics, epidemiology, and introductory calculus. The book will be of interest to anyone looking to understand the statistical fundamentals to support quantitative research in public health. In addition, this book: • Is based on the authors’ course notes from 20 years teaching regression modeling in public health courses • Provides exercises at the end of each chapter • Contains a solutions chapter with answers in STATA, SAS, SPSS, and R • Provides real-world public health applications of the theoretical aspects contained in the chapters Applications of Regression Models in Epidemiology is a reference for graduate students in public health and public health practitioners.
