Industry has become an essential part of modern society and waste production is an inevitable outcome of the developmental activities. A material becomes waste when it is discarded without expecting to be compensated for its inherent value. These wastes may pose a potential hazard to the human health or the environment (soil, air, water) when improperly treated, stored, transported or disposed of or managed. In view of this, management of industrial wastes including their disposal in environment friendly and economically viable way is very important and their suggestions are made for better strategies. There are many small and large garments / textile industries are located within residential area of Savar Thana in Bangladesh and pollute the surrounding environment due to the absence of treatment plan. This has caused adverse health effects on resident of this area. This book represents an attempt to evaluate the polluting effect of industrial waste and find out the associated health problems.Appraisal of the whole situation with reference to Savar thana scenario is attempted so that a better cost-effective strategies for waste management be evolved in future in Bangladesh.

Worldwide establishment of industries is the chief culprit to pose the environmental threat. The cost of substantially reducing industrial pollution is high; how to finance it without undue economic burden remains a question. There is a need for revised technology to diminish industrial pollution and to dispose of all wastes in ways less damaging to the environment. Keeping this fact in the mind, this work begun with the utilization of handmade paper and cardboard industrial waste for mushroom cultivation. Mushroom cultivation on industrial wastes will solve two major problems – first one is the accumulation of industrial waste in the environment and second is the shortage of food simultaneously. This book focuses on the morphological, anatomical and mutagenicity analysis of mushroom cultivated on handmade paper and cardboard industrial wastes and their mixture with wheat straw. When these wastes were mixed with wheat straw increase in biological efficiency was observed and mushroom fruiting bodies were found to be normal and non-mutagenic. This book will be helpful for all those researchers who are working on bioremediation concept and mushroom cultivation technology.

It will require initiatives on behalf of the Pollution Control Board and the individual industries to adopt new/upgraded technologies to abate industrial water pollution.

The growth of industrialisation has increased water pollution. Industries and individuals produce pollutants that are discharged into waters. Uncontrolled water pollution results in health hazards to human beings and other livings. Thus there is a need to impose water pollution control measures to reduce pollution to an extent where very little pollutants are discharged into waters. States have enacted statutes for controlling water pollution in order to achieve the safety of waters. Legislation impose measures, such as a permit and its conditions, that must be respected to discharge pollutant or trade effluent into waters, otherwise the discharger becomes a polluter and liable to criminal sanctions. Statutes provide fines or imprisonment, or both, for water polluters and severely punish a subsequent offender. Corporation and corporate officers are punished for the offence of polluting waters. Environmental audit or service orders restores the environment in its previous condition and may be used to detect and correct an inappropriate management system. Prosecution for environmental crime must be used as a last resort.

Water is required for domestic, industrial, agricultural and fishery production for each purpose analytical study of water is essential because impure water cannot be used for domestic, industrial, agricultural and fishery purposes. Identification of air pollution sources and characteristics of the pollutants are essential factors on air quality control, particularly on determining mitigation or prevention actions. Moreover these factors are important on predicting effect and trajectory of the pollutants on the environment so that an appropriate approach can be done. Mainly air pollutants are particulate matter, SOx, NOx, CO, VOCs, and lead. Developed countries contribute more on emission of CO2, SOx, and NOx compare to developing countries, which emit more CO, hydrocarbon, and particulate matter. This is attributed to gap in pollution reduction technology, wherein developing countries have not reached optimization in combustion process.

But in this startling new look at Edison, Dr. George J. Hill suggests that the price of invention was serious industrial pollution and other environmental costs. Meadows, ponds, and forest disappeared to make way for Edison’s laboratories, factories, and mining operation; water and soil pollution were rife, and the health consequences for workers and residents were severe. “Dr. Hill is the first author to offer a comprehensive look at Edison’s impact on the environment. Edison’s Environment examines the inventor’s interactions — as expressed in his life, thought and career — with the natural world, and traces the development of environmental consciousness in the views of Edison and his contemporaries. He explores the fundamental debate about how we should judge the actions and ethics of past generations. In so doing, George Hill has written one of the most novel and original works on Edison to appear in a generation.” – Mark Edward Lender, Ph.D. A bibliography and a full-name, place and subject index add to the value of this work.About the Author: George J. Water and land pollution, both are very dangerous. But, in contrast air pollution has its own peculiarities due to its trans-boundary dispersion of pollutants over the entire world. In any well planned urban set up, industrial pollution takes a back seat and vehicular emissions take precedence as the major cause of urban air pollution. No physical or chemical method is known to ameliorate industrial or traffic air pollution. A suitable alternative way is to grow green plants in and around industries, traffic areas and along roadsides. Response of plants towards air pollution was assessed by air pollution tolerance Index (APTI) value. Four physiological and biological parameters including leaf relative water content (RWC), ascorbic acid (AA) content, total leaf chlorophyll (TCh), and leaf extract pH were used to develop an APTI. The vegetation monitoring in terms of its APTI acts as a ‘Bioindicator’ of air pollution and has been incorporated in the assessment of the present study.

Over the last few decades environment and its pollution is the governing concern for the human being in this planet. People become conscious about the changing of their surrounding global warming. But environment is degraded day by day by the weight of overcrowded people. One of such example is Shitalakhya River which encompasses eastern periphery of Dhaka city receives uncontrolled discharge of pollution, solid waste, sewage and waste water discharged from domestic, commercial and industrial activities of the city. These waste materials are tremendously deteriorating water and sediment quality of the river. The contamination level reaches at such an alarming stage during dry periods that not only the ecosystem of the river collapse but also the treatment plants of the city based on the river water virtually losses their expected quality of production. Hence the restore of the water quality of the Shitalakhya is crucial for its sustainability. This study on Shitalakhya is approaching to assess the water and sediment quality of this river which will help to establish processing plants in future for possible remedial measures to reduce water and sediment pollutions.

Kano: Environment, Society and Development is a collection of research works on Kano and its environs. Though largely a rural economy, the region is known for its huge population, extensive landmass and abundant natural resources. As a richly endowed part of Nigeria, it is not surprising that it has attracted several scholarly studies on its physical and human environments, including the region's potential for leading the charge in the country's quest for economic development. Contributions in this volume cover a wide range of critical environmental, economic, political, demographic, cultural and health issues. The diversity of the themes explored attests to the complexity and breadth of the curriculum of contemporary academic studies of geography. The authors worked on the principle that there is a dynamic relationship between man and his environment and noted that in the Kano region, environmental resources play a great role in supporting and developing peoples' livelihoods. They also explored the complex pattern of relationships between the physical and human environmental resources utilised in the area. They equally interrogated the current policies and management of environmental resources in Nigeria, which are too frequently underpinned by a perspective that views African societies primarily as backward and lacking in livelihood sustainability.

Air pollution is a major problem arising mainly from industrialization. Pollutants from industries are pumped directly into the atmosphere affecting the air quality. Since Visakhapatnam is an industrial hub,air pollution has become a major concern of distress. This study aims at, the assessment of ambient air pollution in and around Paravada region of industrial zone in Visakhapatnam. All the sampling stations have exceeded their permissible limit except Ravada. The standard value for particulate matter is 100 µg/m3 as referred by The revised National Ambient Air Quality Standards. The higher particulate matter pollution in the industrial area may be attributed to re-suspension of road dust, soil dust, automobile traffic and nearby industrial emissions. Ravada has reported lower values because it is at large distance from the industrial emissions and covered with rich vegetation.

The objective of the study was to assess the impact of river pollution on the lives of the inhabitants of the "Hechu" Peasant Association. The study revealed that the river pollution has affected the inhabitant's health seriously. Water related human health problems such as typhoid, dysentery and amoeba are commonly reported among the inhabitants. As a result, the major problems experienced by the inhabitants were increased medical expenses, low agricultural production, problems on children's education and financial loss due to labor hire. In addition, the dwellers face the death of animals due to toxic pollutants, decline in production and decrease of animal body weight. The study revealed that the respondents that were economically poor tend to be strongly affected by the river pollution when compared with the well-off and middle-class respondents. The study also revealed that the inhabitants did not take any measures to stop the river pollution. However, they took precaution measures to reduce the effect of river pollution on their health like changing the water into alcohol, and adding ash on the water and filtering the river water using cloth.

This book is an edited collection of seven chapters on the theme of ‘people and space interactions in different settings’. Using a variety of problems, it showcases a rich set of solutions to the global challenges of functional, sustainable and responsive habitats in both urban and rural environments. The book deals with cultural landscapes, sustainable housing settings, the environment and human response, spatial epidemiology, neighbourhood and health, and the subjectivity-objectivity continuum in man-environment research. The studies apply a variety of social research methods and strategies relevant to the study of human interaction with its environment. Collectively they serve as templates for direction in modern social science research methodology built on evidence-based scientific inquiry of the built environment. It can guide both young and seasoned researchers in considering appropriate responses to various social research problems, including assessing various options in research process innovation. A recurrent lesson from the individual studies, and significant contribution of the volume, is that each research endeavor needs to be based on a firm philosophical grounding as this goes a long way in determining the type of data to be collected, and the ways that they are analysed and interpreted. Taking a cross-disciplinary perspective, this edited collection should be of interest to scholars of geography, anthropology, sociology, epidemiology, urban planning, architectu...

Rules and regulations should be put in place to protect the lagoon from pollution. Also, sediment traps and gritting should be provided in drains leading into the lagoon. This will stop refuse from getting into the lagoon. Small scale industries along the lagoon should be relocated to reduce the extent of pollution of the lagoon. It is believed that when these measures and others are adhered to the extent of pollution will be minimised, if not completely eradicated.

Human health and the environment are undoubtedly connected. “Environmentally Sound Technologies” have been developed to prevent and mitigate degradations of both the environment, thereby protecting the health of the populations living in those environments. If there may be a general consensus on the necessity to use ESTs in order to protect the environment, the question of the transfer and accessibility of these technologies to developing countries has been at issue. The international property law regime, particularly the TRIPS Agreement, has been accused of jeopardizing the effective access of WTO developing country Members to technologies essential to the protection of environment, and indirectly affects the health of their populations. This thesis will discuss how WTO developing country Members could outweigh their obligations under the TRIPS Agreement and adopt a human rights-based approach in order to access ESTs and ensure their population’s health through the prevention and mitigation of environmental damages.
