Duplex Stainless Steels (DSSs) are chromium-nickel-molybdenum-iron alloys that are usually in proportions optimized for equalizing the volume fractions of austenite and ferrite. Due to their ferritic-austenitic microstructure, they possess a higher mechanical strength and a better corrosion resistance than standard austenitic steels. This type of steel is now increasing its application and market field due to its very good properties and relatively low cost. This book is a review of the most recent progress achieved in the last 10 years on microstructure, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength properties, as well as applications, due to the development of new grades. Special attention will be given to fatigue and fracture behavior and to proposed models to account for mechanical behavior. Polymers and composites are usually exposed to influence of external factors (temperature, humidity, mechanical loading, etc.) which cause a time-dependent change of their structure and properties due to physical and chemical transformations. Thus, predicting mechanical and thermophysical properties of composite materials, it is necessary to consider results of research about structure and properties time-dependent variability of polymer resins under the influence of external factors. The aim of the work was to establish features of moisture absorption and to estimate influence of the absorbed moisture on mechanical and thermophysical properties of epoxy-based nanocomposites. Elastic characteristics of NC were experimentally investigated and described using Halpin-Tsai and Norris micromechanical models considering morphological features of filler particles. Viscoelastic behavior of epoxy resin and NC was analyzed after long-term moisture influence by means of linear integral equation of Boltzmann-Volterra considering a principle of moisture-time analogy. Application of thermomechanical analysis allowed establishing basic regularities for glass transition temperature for NC.

The invaded sections of the valley bottoms and lower hill slopes are characterised by an almost complete monoculture of Acacia mearnsii, with very few fynbos species still present. The work looks at the influence of the invasion on soil properties, vegetation structure and soil erosion. It further explore how these changes change over time since clearing.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is a solid state process in which a non consumable stirring (rotating) tool is plunged into a work piece up to half thickness, which causes intense plastic deformation, material mixing, and thermal exposure, resulting in refinement of micro structural properties, enhancement of mechanical properties, and homogeneity of the processed (nugget) zone. The FSP technique has been successfully used for producing fine-grained structure and surface composite, modifying the microstructure of materials, synthesizing composites like metal-metal composites. The use of FSP generates significant frictional heating and intense plastic deformation, thereby resulting in the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization in the stirred zone (SZ). Although there is still a controversy about the grain-refinement mechanism in the SZ, it is generally believed that the grain refinement is due to dynamic recrystallization. Therefore, the factors influencing the nucleation and growth of the dynamic recrystallization will determine the resultant grain microstructure in the SZ. It has been demonstrated that the FSP parameters, tool geometry, material chemistry, workpiece temperature, vertical pressure, and active cooling exert a significant effect on the size of the recrystallized grains in the SZ.

Thereby it is still not entirely clear how the mechanical properties in living tissue depend on the collagen network. And also the influence of mechanical load on the collagen network is not yet fully understood. The quantification of the collagen network can give more insight in these issues, it is shown here that the OS framework is a very useful tool for this. Written in Mathematica 6.0.

The wear resistance of PTFE can be significantly improved by addition of suitable filler materials. Besides the type, the shape and size of the materials added also influence the tribological properties. In the past, research in this area has been confined to the PTFE filled with conventional filler materials like glass fibers, graphite, carbon fibers, etc. However, with the growing demand for utilizing PTFE in a variety of applications, significant effort is needed towards developing the novel composite materials by adding one or more non-conventional filler materials possessing the potential of increasing the wear resistance. It is established that PTFE exhibits significantly low coefficient of friction when sliding against steels. The low coefficient of friction results from the ability of its extended chain linear molecules, - (CF2-CF2) n-, to form low shear strength films upon its surface and mating counter-faces during sliding. PTFE is extensively used for a wide variety of structural applications as in aerospace, automotive, earth moving, medical, electrical, electronics, computer and chemical industries. On account of its good combination of properties, these are used for producing a number of mechanical components such as gears, cams, wheels, brakes, clutches, bearings, gaskets, seals as well as wires, cables, textile fibers, electronic components, medical implants, surgical instruments etc.

The reversible amorphous-cubic phase transition in GST has already been successfully applied in phase-change memory devices. However, there are proposals that an amorphous-hexagonal-cubic transition could offer the possibility of a tri-state memory device, thereby doubling the current data storage capacity. In this study, the structural, thermal, electronic and optical properties of hexagonal and cubic GST have been simulated from first principles. Although pure GST exhibits superior qualities in terms of speed of transition and thermal stability, several aspects such as the minimization of the writing current and a reduction in the wavelength of the writing laser beam need to be addressed. In this study, the effect of nitrogen doping on the optical and electronic properties of GST has been analyzed from first principles.

Their co-efficient of variations are more or less uniform except for cotton the variation in cotton is observed in the latter half of the period of study. Its rise in productivity may due to the adoption of new technology in cultivation and the use of modern implements in agriculture. Thus climate change has no direct impact of major crops.

This book presents the analytic foundations to the theory of the hypoelliptic Laplacian. The hypoelliptic Laplacian, a second-order operator acting on the cotangent bundle of a compact manifold, is supposed to interpolate between the classical Laplacian and the geodesic flow. Jean-Michel Bismut and Gilles Lebeau establish the basic functional analytic properties of this operator, which is also studied from the perspective of local index theory and analytic torsion. The book shows that the hypoelliptic Laplacian provides a geometric version of the Fokker-Planck equations. The authors give the proper functional analytic setting in order to study this operator and develop a pseudodifferential calculus, which provides estimates on the hypoelliptic Laplacian's resolvent. When the deformation parameter tends to zero, the hypoelliptic Laplacian converges to the standard Hodge Laplacian of the base by a collapsing argument in which the fibers of the cotangent bundle collapse to a point. For the local index theory, small time asymptotics for the supertrace of the associated heat kernel are obtained. The Ray-Singer analytic torsion of the hypoelliptic Laplacian as well as the associated Ray-Singer metrics on the determinant of the cohomology are studied in an equivariant setting, resulting in a key comparison formula between the elliptic and hypoelliptic analytic torsions.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Meteorology, Aeronomy, Climatology, grade: 2'1, , course: Soil Science, language: English, abstract: This study focused on the assessment of the vulnerability and adaptability to climate change by farming communities in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State. Four research questions were developed in line with the purpose of the study, and four correspondent hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Relevant literatures were reviewed to cover the variables under investigation. The population of the study was 100 registered farmers in the local government area. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the population from 11 political wards of Sardauna. Data for the study were obtained by the use of a questionnaire at 0.05 level of significance and 99 degree of freedom. From the analysis, it was found that flood, desertification, land degradation, cessation of rain and drought are the major indicators of climate change in Nigeria. Insufficient extension services, lack of farmers enlightenment, negligence of government, religious/traditional believes of farmers and low farmers income are found to be major reasons the farming communities are highly vulnerable to climate change. Based on the above findings, conclusion, recommendations and suggestions for further studies were made.

Throughout the history, English was changing steadily. Not only was the English grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary being altered over the centuries but also the semantics of lexemes. A major factor that has a considerable impact on the semantics of words is the influence of foreign languages.This study deals with semantic changes due to the Latin influence on the English language in the Early Modern English period. The aim of the analysis is - with the help of the Oxford English Dictionary Online - to determine potential patterns of meaning alterations of English lexemes that were caused by the influx of Latin-derived equivalents, especially on the field of human anatomy, and between the 15th and the 18th century.Moreover, the Early Modern English period is portrayed as well as the roles of Latin and English during that time, also considering the integration of Latin loanwords into English. In order to discuss meaning changes due to Latin influences, a closer look will be taken at language modifications in general, at lexical change and at the various types of semantic change by which English words might have been affected.

Clayey soil creates many problems to the Geotechnical Engineers primarily because of repeated change of moisture content. Normally, these soils increase in size and swell when they absorb water and reduce in size and shrink when they become dry. Volume change in soil leads to distortions in the form of settlement due to contraction as a result of dryness or in the form of expansion due to swelling as a result of the absorption of water. There may be the need for soil treatment to improve the engineering properties of such soil. Compacted bentonite is often used as a buffer materials and for radioactive waste disposal system. A good understanding of the hydro-mechanical behavior of clay soil is essential to ensure safe disposal.The present study reports the results on the effects of temperature on swelling pressure and compressibility characteristics of soil. In this study, two different type of soils were used. One of them was a bentonite (liquid limit = 139%) procured from Bikaner, Rajasthan another one was Rourkela local soil (liquid limit = 35%). Three null hypotheses were tested in the study which revealed that teachers' participation in school decision making has significant relationship on their job productivity; principals' leadership styles have significant relationship on teachers' involvement in school decision-making, management effectiveness has significant influence on job productivity in schools. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made to the principals to encourage teachers to participate in important school discussions that will motivate them to develop a sense of belongingness to the organizations and enhance their job productivity.

Near-field microwave microscopy has been used as a non-destructive tool for current distribution mapping in high-Tc superconductors and other conducting films at room temperature. The focused microwave emitted from the tip of a near-field scanning microwave microprobe is absorbed in the thin film in a small spot of size approximately same as the size of the probe tip. The heat will spread into the adjacent regions in the thin film sample through thermal diffusion. The temperature rise due to local heating will lead to the change in the local resistivity of the sample which results in a voltage response depending on the local current density and the input microwave power. The map of voltage response acquired while the microwave probe scans the film surface can provide information about the surface morphology and the non-uniformity of the electromagnetic properties of the film. Hence in order to understand the absorption of microwave radiation in conducting thin films, a theoretical model based on heat diffusion is developed in this book to determine how the different parameters affect the temperature rise and heat diffusion.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, , course: Graduate studies, language: English, abstract: Ethiopia, one of the developing countries, is facing serious natural resource degradation problems. The main objective of this study was to examine the farmer's perceptions and adaptation to climate change through conservation agriculture. The data used for the study were collected from 142 farm households heads drawn from five kebeles. Primary data and secondary data were used. In addition to descriptive statistics, Heckman two stage sample selection model was employed to examine farmer's perceptions and adaptations of climate change. Farmers level of education, household nonfarm income, livestock ownership, extension on crop and livestock, households' credit accessibility, perception of increase in temperature and perception of decrease in precipitation significantly affect the adaptation to climate change. Similarly, farmers' perception of climate change was affected significantly by information on climate, farmer to farmer extension, local agro -ecology, number of relatives in development group and perception of change in duration of season. A binary logit model was employed for farmers' participation in conservation agriculture shows education level, number of active family labour and main employment of farmers were significant variables in determining participation in conservation agriculture

This book covers local search for combinatorial optimization and its extension to mixed-variable optimization. Although not yet understood from the theoretical point of view, local search is the paradigm of choice for tackling large-scale real-life optimization problems. Today’s end-users demand interactivity with decision support systems. For optimization software, this means obtaining good-quality solutions quickly. Fast iterative improvement methods, like local search, are suited to satisfying such needs. Here the authors show local search in a new light, in particular presenting a new kind of mathematical programming solver, namely LocalSolver, based on neighborhood search. First, an iconoclast methodology is presented to design and engineer local search algorithms. The authors’ concern regarding industrializing local search approaches is of particular interest for practitioners. This methodology is applied to solve two industrial problems with high economic stakes. Software based on local search induces extra costs in development and maintenance in comparison with the direct use of mixed-integer linear programming solvers. The authors then move on to present the LocalSolver project whose goal is to offer the power of local search through a model-and-run solver for large-scale 0-1 nonlinear programming. They conclude by presenting their ongoing and future work on LocalSolver toward a full mathematical programming solver based on local search.
