Innovation in construction is essential for growth. The industry strives to remain competitive using a variety of approaches and needs to engage structured initiatives linked to proven innovation concepts, techniques and applications. Even in mature markets like the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, where business behaviour is generally considered as being risk averse, it is increasingly important to embed innovation into mainstream business practices. In Construction Innovation and Process Improvement a number of wide ranging issues from construction practice in different countries with different contexts are presented to provide a rich collection of literature embracing theory and practice. Chapters are divided into three broad themes of construction innovation relating to: Theory and Practice; Process Drivers; and Future Technologies. Several questions are posed, including for example: What is particularly unique about construction innovation in theory and practice? What are the major drivers of construction innovation? What factors are needed to support and deliver future construction technologies? In attempting to respond to such questions, the book sheds new light on these challenges, and provides readers with a number of ways forward, especially cognisant of the increased role of globalisation, the enhanced impact of knowledge, and importance of innovation. All these can have a significant impact on strategic decision-making, competitive advantage, and sustainable policies and practices. Part One deals with change management, technology, sustainable construction, and supply chain management; Part Two addresses innovation and process improvement drivers, including strategic management, concurrent engineering, risk management, innovative procurement, knowledge management; Part Three explores future technologies in construction – and particularly, how these can be harnessed and leveraged to help procure innovation and process improvement.

Medium and small sized enterprises are increasingly reliant on innovation to be successful. A new paradigm to exploit joint forces for creating innovative products and services is Open Innovation, in which companies open specific phases of their innovation process to collaboration with others in order to profit from novel ideas, or alternative external paths to market.Especially in the field of the digital economy, which is highly innovation-driven, successful examples of value-creating open partnerships can be found: customers, researchers or partners join the innovation process, and thus may complement a necessary competency portfolio that a single company may be unable to provide.Managing and facilitating Open Innovation processes does, however, require appropriate competencies and experiences. In that regard, support in terms of infrastructure and analytical frameworks can be very helpful and even necessary. This book includes theories, tools and support mechanisms that were presented at the International Symposium on Support for Open Innovation processes. Researchers and practitioners active in the field of Open Innovation describe their experiences and ideas in this area. The first part of the book elucidates several approaches to support the management of Open Innovation processes. This has also attracted the focus of researchers analysing leadership styles and its relation to innovation. Innovation is a transition from traditional methods to modern ways of providing products, services, processes, business models and much more. However, factors that have continuously kept innovation ever-increasing have not yet been clearly identified. Effectively, CEOs have their own role in the process of managing innovation allowing, initiating and monitoring the processes, products, services offered by public or private sectors. Therefore, this dissertation plans to compare the CEOs leadership role in two leading online world companies Yahoo and Google that are rapidly facing the growing demands for modernisation of their offerings. The comparison will attempt to test a hypothesis that relates Yahoo and Google CEOs' role in selection of strategy, acquisitions and management style, and its effect in innovation outcomes.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.3, Berlin School of Economics and Law (Institute of Management Berlin), course: MBA Transatlantic Management - Innovation, language: English, abstract: This research aims to understand how innovation affects and is affected by a firm's financial performance. It focuses particularly on the Internet industry and collects both quantitative and qualitative data from online-based SMEs in Germany. The results reveal that among online-businesses, the size of the company in terms of revenue is positively related to the level of innovation, whereas lower profitability and smaller absolute earnings seem to encourage higher levels of innovation. Companies with higher revenues are found to earn generally lower profit margins. It was also found that companies that experienced a reduction in annual revenue have a tendency to increase innovation levels. No significant effects were found between innovation levels and change in profitability. Similarly, no significant effects were found between change in profitability and growth. Among online-based SMEs, this study highlights the importance of innovation as an instrument employed by distressed companies to improve their performance. It also shows that there may be a tendency for the companies that are more profitable to focus less on innovation.

In this book, the concepts of innovation and dynamic capabilities are thoroughly studied and evolved into a new conceptualization for integration. Since the nature of business organizations is to strive for achievement of competitive advantage relentlessly, it is imperative for business organizations to develop suitable capabilities and, thus, leverage them to gain an advantageous edge in the business environment. The dynamic capabilities that are built and deployed by firms to cope with changing business conditions help the firms to adapt to the demand of the situation through resource mobilization and effective management. Dynamic capabilities usually appear in varied breadth and span and culminate into hierarchical stages. The current century business slogan "Innovation" is adapted and considered by every business firm. Development and maintenance of innovation is being perceived as a critical organizational function by managers. It is unanimously agreed upon by senior managers that there is a need for the building of organizational capabilities to promote innovation for a competitive advantage and to get the most benefit from such innovations in changing scenarios. This requires the integration of dynamic capabilities and innovation management disciplines for building innovation management capabilities in organizations.

In Germany only less than 0.5 % ideas pursuing by industrial companies has led to a success. The question being addressed is how companies can drive innovations effectively and efficiently to create new growth opportunities, particularly in this difficult time due to the global economic crisis. These challenges could be captured by driving radical innovations using open innovation methodology. Radical innovations can create new markets and huge growth potential for the business meanwhile breakthrough innovations can be developed faster and cheaper via open innovation approach. The aim of this study is to provide a deep insight into radical innovation and open innovation management based on a thorough literature research and evaluation. Thereby basic concepts of the both innovation models are explored and compared with other innovation types, e.g. incremental and closed innovations. Moreover, the Christensen's model of disruptive innovation and Chesbrough's theory about open innovation are explained into details. In addition, opportunities and challenges as well as managing concept of radical and open innovations are analyzed and illuminated with concrete examples and cases, amongst others the eco-friendly Light Emitting Diode (LED). Science and innovation have the power to transform our lives and the world we live in – for better or worse – in ways that often transcend borders and generations: from the innovation of complex financial products that played such an important role in the recent financial crisis to current proposals to intentionally engineer our Earth’s climate. The promise of science and innovation brings with it ethical dilemmas and impacts which are often uncertain and unpredictable: it is often only once these have emerged that we feel able to control them. How do we undertake science and innovation responsibly under such conditions, towards not only socially acceptable, but socially desirable goals and in a way that is democratic, equitable and sustainable? Responsible innovation challenges us all to think about our responsibilities for the future, as scientists, innovators and citizens, and to act upon these. This book begins with a description of the current landscape of innovation and in subsequent chapters offers perspectives on the emerging concept of responsible innovation and its historical foundations, including key elements of a responsible innovation approach and examples of practical implementation. Written in a constructive and accessible way, Responsible Innovation includes chapters on: Innovation and its management in the 21st century A vision and framework for responsible innovation Concepts of future-oriented responsibility as an underpinning philosophy Values – sensitive design Key themes of anticipation, reflection, deliberation and responsiveness Multi – level governance and regulation Perspectives on responsible innovation in finance, ICT, geoengineering and nanotechnology Essentially multidisciplinary in nature, this landmark text combines research from the fields of science and technology studies, philosophy, innovation governance, business studies and beyond to address the question, “How do we ensure the responsible emergence of science and innovation in society?”

This book argues for a prospective turn in ergonomics to challenge the established fields of strategic design (SD) and management. Its multi-disciplinary outlook builds upon concepts derived from Management, Innovation and Design Science. Differences, similarities and relationships between strategic design and prospective ergonomics are reviewed using existing theories and frameworks from design, ergonomics, and strategic and innovation management. To complement the theory, 12 cases have been analyzed in greater depth according to 4 main dimensions of analysis. Outcomes have shown that innovating through the Prospective Ergonomics (PE) approach is about finding the right balance between, on the one hand, meeting primary objectives such as profit maximization or solving the design problem, and on the other, acknowledging that human activity is bounded by rationality. This means that humans have diverse motives.

Jugaad Innovation is the most comprehensive book yet to appear on the subject [of frugal innovation]. —The Economist A frugal and flexible approach to innovation for the 21st century Innovation is a key directive at companies worldwide. But in these tough times, we can't rely on the old formula that has sustained innovation efforts for decades—expensive R&D projects and highly-structured innovation processes. Jugaad Innovation argues the West must look to places like India, Brazil, and China for a new approach to frugal and flexible innovation. The authors show how in these emerging markets, jugaad (a Hindi word meaning an improvised solution born from ingenuity and cleverness) is leading to dramatic growth and how Western companies can adopt jugaad innovation to succeed in our hypercompetitive world. Outlines the six principles of jugaad innovation: Seek opportunity in adversity, do more with less, think and act flexibly, keep it simple, include the margin, and follow your heart Features twenty case studies on large corporations from around the world—Google, Facebook, 3M, Apple, Best Buy, GE, IBM, Nokia, Procter & Gamble, PepsiCo, Tata Group, and more—that are actively practicing jugaad innovation The authors blog regularly at Harvard Business Review; their work has been profiled in BusinessWeek, MIT Sloan Management Review, The Financial Times, The Economist, and more Filled with previously untold and engaging stories of resourceful jugaad innovators and entrepreneurs in emerging markets and the United States This groundbreaking book shows leaders everywhere why the time is right for jugaad to emerge as a powerful business tool in the West—and how to bring jugaad practices to their organizations.

There are studies predicting an enormous rise of the rate of companies gamifying their innovation process. Nevertheless, the majority of those projects are supposed to fail because the application might be designed poorly. In this thesis, a comprehensive examination of theoretical background is delivered, the providers of gamification software are ascertained, case studies of some of their completed projects are analyzed, and interviews are conducted with implementing consultants. The thesis concludes that gamifying an innovation platform for time-restricted innovation challenges can be a very powerful and successful management tool if implemented properly. Open-ended gamification approaches of innovation platforms usually fail to meet its business objectives in the long run because participation decreases over time.

This practical guide reveals the nine major “fatigue factors” that can block the path to innovation success, along with solutions to energize innovation. Original advances in innovation practice and new case studies are applied to guide inventors, entrepreneurs, companies, universities, and even policy makers in conquering innovation fatigue. Cost-effective solutions include guidance on intellectual assets, dealing with disruptive innovation, and driving innovation using the “Horn of Innovation” and “Circuit of Innovation” models. A surprising view of DaVinci as an engine of open innovation is presented. Throughout the book, a unique aspect is exploring the journey of innovators, including corporate employees and entrepreneurs, at the often-overlooked personal level using the metaphor of immigrants in a strange land to identify barriers and solutions.

In my opinion the "Zotter Schokoladen-Manufaktur GmbH" located in the eastern part of Styria is such a company, because it qualifies a lot which is written in state-of-the art business literature as well as in established sources on innovation and technology management. The method I used to acquire information was a primary analysis, realized as an interview with the business owner and entrepreneur, Josef Zotter.Despite to the fact that it is difficult to match real-life to theory, I want to describe the real facts by using the processes of innovation. It starts with the idea of the Zotter-Schokolade in the invention stage and leads to current questions like, how knowledge is secured in the company. I hope that I can give a good insight to these unconventional approaches in the context of innovation management, which gives the reader a chance to see theory in a more touchable and realistic way.

This research provides insights on the competitiveness of the Islamic financial industry in relation to conventional finance in the future term by investigating the development and standardization of Islamic finance risk management products and techniques. Additionally, it examines whether Shariah law impedes the innovation and standardization of these products and techniques. The investigation of the topic is carried out on the basis of a descriptive analysis of topic-related literature and internet publications. Furthermore, it is supported by analytical facts and figures from recent studies and financial reports. At the end, the research concludes that the classical Islamic scholars, and not Shariah law, impede the innovation and standardization of Shariah-compliant risk management products and techniques. Despite that issue, the Islamic financial industry with its risk management products and techniques is already competing with conventional finance in the international market as it starts at the point where conventional finance is trying to reach: zero interest rates to stimulate the economies and pure risk management products and techniques, which are not used for speculation

Drawing on their work on performance management within the ‘beyond budgeting’ movement over the past ten years, including many interviews and case studies, Jeremy Hope, Peter Bunce and Franz Röösli set out in this book an executive guide to building a new management model based on eight key change management issues: 1. Governance: From rules and budgets to purpose and values 2. Success: From fixed targets to relative improvement 3. Organization: From centralized functions to customer-oriented teams 4. Accountability: From narrow targets to holistic success criteria 5. Trust: From central control to local autonomy 6. Transparency: From closed information to open book management 7. Rewards: From individual incentives to team-based reward 8. Risk: From complying with rules to understanding pressure points This book is about rethinking how we manage organizations in a post-industrial, post credit crunch world where innovative management models represent the only remaining source of sustainable competitive advantage.[i] The changes suggested by the authors will enable and encourage a cultural climate change that will help organizations to attract and keep the best people as well as drive continuous innovation and growth. Above all, The CEO's Dilemma is about learning how to change business – based on best practice and innovation drawn from leaders world-wide who have built and managed successful organizations.

Innovative strategic management solutions for today's market Strategic Value Management addresses common problems among business managers and other professionals involved in thinking about developing and managing organizations. In it, author Juan Pablo Stegmann integrates all strategic management and business strategy into an innovative standard that introduces key metrics to strategic management and stock value creation. He argues that most complex business issues can be reduced to the three dimensions of stock value creation-profits, sales growth, and capital-that are linked to three critical strategic management decisions-competition, innovation, and resources. His new approach indicates that every strategy has a clear dollar metric, which can measure its consequences of the strategies in terms of stock value. Competitive and growth strategies are analyzed along with economic, financial, dynamic, and contingent approaches Includes a companion CD-ROM, which contains Stegmann's proven model for strategic management and stock value creation Ethical consequences of strategic decisions are introduced-showing how ethics are linked to long-term stock value creation Explains the roots of the current financial crisis by examining the link between the financial world and strategic management, and proposes possible solutions For any looking to enhance their understanding of this discipline, Strategic Value Management offers a new conceptual model for thinking about business strategy and its link to stock value creation.
