Sebastian Walter How Does Confucian Dynamism Influence National Innovativeness

Scholars have noticed the importance of innovation for a nation's wealth; and the possibility that some nations could be better at innovating than others. This study takes the Confucian Dynamism dimension of national culture as focal lens to investigate how cultural values influence the innovativeness of societies. A theoretical model is developed and tested with data from 19 countries for the years 1996 to 2006. The results indicate that Confucian Dynamism does influence national innovativeness. The results also lead to a revised model of how Confucian Dynamism could influence national innovativeness. In addition, this study offers possible explanations of how Confucian Dynamism influences innovation on the individual- and firm-level.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Sehr Gut, University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol (International Business Studies), language: English, abstract: On the turn from an industrial to a knowledge based economy the rules of economic geography have changed significantly. Human capital and a high quality of life which attracts it have become the most important factors for urban economic growth. The goal of the study was to find out whether there is evidence for the hypothesis that European cities with a high quality of life are more innovative. The reasoning is that a nice living environment attracts educated people, which in the next step lures knowledge-based companies and stirs innovative activity. The results of the statistical analysis carried out by the author prove the hypothesis that quality of life and innovativeness are connected. Specifically a good environmental quality directly supports the production of scientific articles. Together with a high-educated labor force it also attracts innovative high-tech companies, which increase the production of patents. An overall high quality of life and a high income level attract educated people and increase the knowledge base of a city. However, a city does not necessarily have to be rich in monetary resources to achieve a good innovative performance. In fact, the quality of life predicts the innovativeness of European cities better than th...

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Innovation economics, grade: A, University of Auckland, course: International Business, language: English, abstract: A country's rate of technological change and advancement is a major determinant for its economic development (Freeman, 1994; Romer, 1990; Solow, 1957). Therefore, policy-makers need to understand what drives the technological change and advancement of the countries they administrate. Of the many factors that affect a society's ability to invent and advance, one that has yet received limited attention is national culture. Furthermore, managers of multinational firms implicitly face the selection of a cultural context when selecting favourable locations for their business activities. If national culture had a positive influence on innovative activities, it should be considered in location decisions for innovative activities. Therefore, this paper explores the relationship between certain aspects af a nation's culture and it's innovativeness.

Radhika Desai Geopolitical Economy. After US Hegemony, Globalization and Empire

Geopolitical Economy radically reinterprets the historical evolution of the world order, as a multi-polar world emerges from the dust of the financial and economic crisis. Radhika Desai offers a radical critique of the theories of US hegemony, globalisation and empire which dominate academic international political economy and international relations, revealing their ideological origins in successive failed US attempts at world dominance through the dollar. Desai revitalizes revolutionary intellectual traditions which combine class and national perspectives on 'the relations of producing nations'. At a time of global upheavals and profound shifts in the distribution of world power, Geopolitical Economy forges a vivid and compelling account of the historical processes which are shaping the contemporary international order.

Scientific Study from the year 2017 in the subject Tourism, University of Kelaniya, course: Economic Modelling, language: English, abstract: Measuring the contribution of tourism to a national economy has always been a frustrating exercise. Tourism does not have specific products. It represents the sum of expenditure by travellers for wide range of products. It is not possible to identify tourism as a single "industry" in the national accounts, its value to the economy is not readily revealed. As a result of the absence of tourism in official economic statistics, there is often an on-going battle to establish tourism credibility as an economic activity and generator of income in the economy. As a result, a significant volume of tourism research over the past few decades have focussed on the development and use of a variety of economic techniques aimed at quantifying the effects of tourism on an economy. In conventional literature has proven that Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling is the best applied tool addressing and analysing tourism related issues in an economy. The paper provided a complete description of the theoretical structure of the CGE-Tourism including all equations and variables by using relevant Excerpts for different blocks of equations in the TABLO file associated with the GEMPACK software used to operationalise the model. Results of this study imply that there are possible shortcuts in economic development that emerging countries can take, in order to achieve the level of economic wellbeing similar to that of the developed countries faster. Finally, a term of "neat" creativity as a constant driver of economic development, be it creativity of slack or creativity of deficit, has been discussed, which raises numerous questions for further research. , abstract: The major query addressed in this study is whether emerging economies can find shortcuts in their economic development through applying their creative potential. Monika Roth Influence of European Integration on the Bargaining Power of German Trade Unions

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich BWL - Wirtschaftspolitik, Freie Universität Berlin (Otto Suhr Institut - Politikwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Politikwissenschaft, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: German trade unions' influence in industrial relations at the national level is curbed by the side effects of European integration. Supranationalization implies the transfer of regulatory power from the national to the supranational level. In the various policy areas, integration and supranationalization proceed at different speeds with regard to scope and level. This also applies to the neighboring policy areas of economic and labor policy. However, due to the overlap of these two policy areas, the asymmetrical integration of economic policy vis-a-vis labor policy leads to shifts in the German collective bargaining system, thus circumscribing the scope of German trade unions' action. More specifically, sectoral asymmetry leads to asymmetric political localization of the policy areas: Regulations in the economy are mainly taken at the EU level, whereas labor and social affairs remain national competences. Furthermore, the insertion of a supra-national layer is accompanied by a policy-theoretical change of the highest governmental and judicial authority from a hitherto (social-democratic) market-correcting consensus to a now market-making approach. This shift causes respective shifts at the national level as well. Additionally, the European Court of Justice possesses ...

John Stuart Mill Principles of Political Economy - Volume 1

Can national growth be sustained indefinitely? How much should government intervene in a competitive market economy? The questions John Stuart Mill raised a century and a half ago, in 1848's Principles of Political Economy, and the answers he found, are just as critical-and just as contentiously debated-today.Through a lens of what the philosopher himself termed "philosophical radicalism"-and what some today call "democratic liberalism"-Mill takes a fresh look at Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and other influential works of political thought of his time, and recasts them from a more scientific viewpoint, suggesting that such realities as the unequal distribution of wealth were not "natural" but rather a matter of human choice... choices we continue to have to make in our ever more complicated economy. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Selected Writings of John Stuart Mill and On Liberty.English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) was one of the foremost figure of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century. Alexandra Steinberg More and more plugged Social Representations of the New Economy

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This study set out to explore representations of the new economy amongst business professionals in Internet enabled business. Going beyond the new economy-‘hype’, the study was aimed at understanding the ways that business professionals make sense of the contemporary economy. In doing so, a social psychological perspective was taken, allowing multiple realities to emerge. Behavioural economists’ and economic psychologists’ conceptualisations of economic life are challenged. They hinge on the presumption that individuals act independently from their social environment and deviate as cognitive misers from a single legitimate economic rationality. By contrast, this study drew on a social constructionist framework. More specifically, it employed social representations theory (Moscovici, 1961/76; Moscovici, 1984), which rehabilitated common sense as a legitimate form of knowledge. The theory of social representations as a theory of knowledge proved as a sensitive and more sophisticated tool to analyse contemporary economy in its manifestations in professionals’ common sense. It is suggested to view the notion of common sense independently of role constellations. Given this framework, this study took a ‘snapshot’ of the contemporary representational field of the new economy amongst business professionals. Particularly, the study was focused on exploring the ‘taken-for-granted’ and beliefs underpinning discourses and symbols. Data from semi-structured intervi...

Although the non-oil sector of Nigeria's economy is a vast one, this study focuses on the African catfish aquaculture industry because of its huge lucrative potentials of contribution to the diversification of Nigeria's economy. Since Nigeria leads the production of African Catfish on the continent of Africa this research should make the government see sense in investing in the production of African Catfish on a large scale which in turn will generate massive employment and contribute to the diversification of the economy leading to economic wealth and sustainable development instead of spending $700 million USD on importing fish every year. Many of the frontiers of environmental economics research are at the interface of large-scale and long-term environmental change with national and global economic systems. This is also where some of the most of challenging environmental policy issues occur. Volume 3 of the Handbook of Environmental Economics provides a synthesis of the latest theory on economywide and international environmental issues and a critical review of models for analyzing those issues. It begins with chapters on the fundamental relationships that connect environmental resources to economic growth and long-run social welfare. The following chapters consider how environmental policy differs in a general-equiIibrium setting from a partial-equilibrium setting and in a distorted economy from a perfect economy. The volume closes with chapters on environmental issues that cross or transcend national borders, such as trade and the environment, biodiversity conservation, acid rain, ozone depletion, and global climate change. The volume provides a useful reference for not only natural resource and environmental economists but also international economists, development economists, and macroeconomists. Another point to notice is that there appears to be a large amount of regional income disparity between the states due to the larger amounts of association of FDI.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 8,0, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (Nijmegen School of Management), course: International Management, language: English, abstract: For the last five decades, one important goal has driven the world economy: The pursuit of growth. As the economy expands, the resource implications associated with it cannot be ignored any longer. In less than a decade, we may face significant scarcity in key resources, such as oil. Out of scholarly discussion it emerged that a transition towards a new form of capitalist development is needed, a transition towards an economy which is in line with the objectives of a sustainable society. Sustainable entrepreneurship, a form of entrepreneurship that combines ecologic, social and economic sustainability, has been generally declared as suited to advance this so-called 'sustainability transition'. However, scholars have neglected to investigate the 'how' and 'why' of such an assumption. This Master Thesis aims at filling this research gap by answering the following research question:In what way can sustainable entrepreneurship influence a transition towards a more sustainable economy? In doing so, the thesis is structured into three different research papers, each using a different research method to reach the following goals:1. Providing a concise definition of the term "sustainable entrepreneurship" and ...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Economy - Health Economics, Tongji University (Sino-Germany College), language: English, abstract: This paper uses basic educational and health-related factors as antecedents for life expectancy at birth on country level. Life expectancy is a highly complicated construct and varies strongly with respect to national borders. Aiming to provide a prediction model, prognoses are based on health expenditure per capita, HIV prevalence, immunization rates and literacy rates and justify cross-national dissimilarities in expected lifetime in a simple manner. The model helps to estimate the importance of the used antecedents among each other and gives a basic understanding on how life expectancy could potentially be influenced. Due to the usage of basic antecedents, the highlighted potential will be of special interest for developing countries.

Vusi Gumede Political Economy of Post-apartheid South Africa

The book, made up of three parts, covers a wide spectrum of political economy issues on post-apartheid South Africa. Although the text is mainly descriptive, to explain various areas of the political economy of post-apartheid South Africa, the first and the last parts provide illuminating insights on the kind of society that is emerging during the twenty-one years of democracy in the country. The book discusses important aspects of the political history of apartheid South Africa and the evolution of post-apartheid society, including an important recap of the history of southern Africa before colonialism. The text is a comprehensive description of numerous political economy phenomena since South Africa gained its political independence and covers some important themes that have not been discussed in detail in other publications on post-apartheid South Africa. The book also updates earlier work of the author on policy and law making, land and agriculture, education and training as well as on poverty and inequality in post-apartheid South Africa thereby providing a wide-ranging overview of the socio-economic development approaches followed by the successive post-apartheid administrations. Interestingly, three chapters focus on various aspects of the post-apartheid South African economy: economic policies, economic empowerment and industrial development. Through the lens of the notion of democratic developmental state and taking apartheid colonialism as a point of departure, the ...

Chris Hesketh Spaces of Capital/Spaces of Resistance. Mexico and the Global Political Economy

Based on original fieldwork in Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico, this book offers a bridge between geography and historical sociology. Chris Hesketh examines the production of space within the global political economy. Drawing on multiple disciplines, Hesketh's discussion of state formation in Mexico takes us beyond the national level to explore the interplay between global, regional, national, and sub-national articulations of power. These are linked through the novel deployment of Antonio Gramsci's concept of passive revolution, understood as the state-led institution or expansion of capitalism that prevents the meaningful participation of the subaltern classes.Furthermore, the author brings attention to the conflicts involved in the production of space, placing particular emphasis on indigenous communities and movements and their creation of counterspaces of resistance. Hesketh argues that indigenous movements are now the leading social force of popular mobilization in Latin America. The author reveals how the wider global context of uneven and combined development frames these specific indigenous struggles, and he explores the scales at which they must now seek to articulate themselves.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Cultural Studies - Basics and Definitions, grade: 2,0, University of Lüneburg (Applied Cultural Sciences), course: Seminar: An introduction to Culture and Economy, 52 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "Economists - on the arts? Isn't this a blasphemy? On the contrary: we believe that economists are able to contribute to a better understanding of many different aspects of both the visual and the performing arts."(Bruno Frey & Werner Pommerehne 1990:vii)Economy and art - for many decades these two fields were considered to be incompatible. But with the genesis of cultural economics the application of economic theories on art became generalizable. Among others Bruno Frey, a Swiss economist, devoted a great deal of his research work to explorer in what way an economic viewpoint and/or the market can be beneficial to art and what effects different instruments have on the arts and on society in general. The first part of this book is giving a short overview of the development and characteristics of Cultural Economy and introduces Bruno Frey's work. Afterwards Frey's argumentation considering the effects of the market on art is presented and contrasted with other authors in order to proceed to a general critique of the market. Concluding, the book opens up a global perspective, underlining the consequences of an economisation of the arts.

Awni Behnam Tracing the Blue Economy

Forming part of the Fondation de Malte's LUMEN Monograph Series, in this text Dr. Awni Behnam, President of the International Ocean Institute and former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, explores how we must live "with the ocean and from the ocean in a sustainable relationship".The interconnectedness of emerging global challenges is forcing a policy dimension change in the form of the Blue Economy as an integrated approach to the governance of the ocean and urban interface, revolving around the human dimension. The paradigm shift came when Elisabeth Mann Borgese - founder of the International Ocean Institute - viewed the situation from the seaward side, where a sustainable ocean economy integrates with and is inclusive of the Green Economy. She famously stated "if before you saw the sea and the sea floor as a continuation of the land, you now see the land as a continuation of the sea,"; the concept of the Blue Economy is an attempt to do justice to that genius vision.

The global economic crisis of 2008 was precipitated by a housing market crash, thus highlighting the destabilizing influence of the property cycle upon the wider economy. This timely book by a world authority explores why cycles occur and how they affect the behaviour of real estate markets. The central argument put forward is that growth and instability are inextricably linked, and that building investment acts both as a key driver of growth and as the source of the most volatile cyclical fluctuations in an economy. The role of building cycles in both economic growth and urban development is explored through a theoretical review and a comparative historical analysis of UK and US national data stretching back to the start of the nineteenth century, together with a case study of the development of London since the start of the eighteenth century. A simulation model of the building cycle is presented and tested using data for the City of London office market. The analysis is then broadened to examine the operation of property cycles in global investment markets during the post-war period, focussing on their contribution to the diffusion of innovation, the accumulation of wealth and the propagation of market instability. Building Cycles: growth & instability concludes by synthesizing the main themes into a theoretical framework, which can guide our understanding of the operation and impact of building cycles on the modern economy. Postgraduate students on courses in property and in urban development as well as professional property researchers, urban economists and planners will find this a stimulating read – demanding but accessible.

Ajaat Gunti Liberalisation of the Indian economy

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: With the onset of reforms to liberalise the Indian economy in July of 1991, a new chapter has dawned for India and her billion plus population. This period of economic transition has had a tremendous impact on the overall economic development of almost all major sectors of the economy, and its effects over the last decade can hardly be overlooked. Besides, it also marks the advent of the real integration of the Indian economy into the global economy. This era of reforms has also ushered in a remarkable change in the Indian mindset, as it deviates from the traditional values held since Independence in 1947, such as „self reliance” and socialistic policies of economic development, which mainly due to the inward looking restrictive form of governance, resulted in the isolation, overall backwardness and inefficiency of the economy, amongst a host of other problems. This, despite the fact that India has always had the potential to be on the fast track to prosperity. Now that India is in the process of restructuring her economy, with aspirations of elevating herself from her present desolate position in the world, the need to speed up her economic development is even more imperative. And having witnessed the positive role that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has played in the rapid economic growth of most of the Southeast Asian countries and most notably China, India has embarked on an ambitious plan to emulate the successes of her neighbours to the east and...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 1,0, University Karlsruhe (TH) (Institut für Informationswirtschaft und Marketing (IISM)), language: English, abstract: The sharing economy is experiencing explosive growth around the globe in which trust plays a crucial role and builds the foundation of the services. With the rise of the sharing economy and the increasing numbers of cross-contextual users, this research aims at the lack of trust transference possibilities across the Peer-to-Peer applications and has the goal to find out whether and how trust can be transferred between the platforms, so that new users do not have to create their reputation from scratch every time they join a new platform. First, this research provides an in-depth literature review of trust transfer theories. Secondly, a conceptual research model for the role of the imported trust in the context of the sharing economy is outlined and analysed by proposing and evaluating a questionnaire using structural equation modeling. Throughout the study, a three-dimensional scale of trust, i.e. ability, benevolence and integrity, is validated in the context of the sharing economy. The experimental study shows that both the overall and subdimensional trust in the provider is directly affected by the overall trust in the platform, the perceived reputation as well as the perceived social presence. The study also provides empirical evidence for the ex...

Hussain Zahid Imam Towards a Viable Monetary System. The Need for a National Complementary Currency for the United States

The burden of interest payments on the national debt is becoming unsustainable for the United States. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the amount of interest on the national debt will be $714 billion in the year 2026. If the interest on the national debt is not paid, a default on the national debt will occur.A debt default would damage the full faith and credit of the United States government. The excellent credit rating of the United States government, both at home and abroad, would be ruined. Treasury securities would no longer be considered a safe and dependable asset to hold, and there may be a foreign sell-off of US securities that would drive up interest rates. A default on the national debt will trigger an economic collapse, which may prove to be worse than the Great Depression. This book explains why the United States needs a second national currency that is conceptually different from the conventional US dollar. This book also explains how this second complementary currency will successfully ward off the impending disaster of a default on the national debt.

One of the most discussed approaches in thisfield of comparative analysis of political economy is the 'varieties of capitalism' theory1developed by Peter Hall and David Soskice. A refreshing, insightful look into the political and economic dynamics driving globalization today Globalization: it's earlier than you think. That's the provocative message of Against the Dead Hand, which traces the rise and fall of the century-long dream of central planning and top-down control and its impact on globalization-revealing the extent to which the «dead hand» of the old collectivist dream still shapes the contours of today's world economy. Mixing historical narrative, thought-provoking arguments, and on-the-scene reporting and interviews, Brink Lindsey shows how the economy has grown up amidst the wreckage of the old regime-detailing how that wreckage constrains the present and obscures the future. He conveys a clearer picture of globalization's current state than the current conventional wisdom, providing a framework for anticipating the future direction of the world economy.
