The study examines two parallel hypotheses no. 1 "The relationship between international trade and economic growth" and no. 2 "The relationship between international trade and poverty reduction" in Pakistan. The objective of the first part of the study is to explore the impact of trade liberalization on economic growth with various covariates. The model contains real GDP per capita for economic growth, trade as share of GDP and the control variables such as financial development, government spending, annual inflation, remittances and manufacturing as shares of GDP are also used as determinants of economic growth for the period of 1973 - 2007. The second part of the study investigates the link between international trade and poverty reduction along with several independent variables. The model contains head count ratio for poverty, trade as share of GDP and the other determinants of poverty like real GDP per capita, consumer price index proxy for inflation, total investment, and agriculture as shares of GDP and urbanization as share of total population are also used.

The book explores the linkage between World Bank loan conditionalities and politics of poverty reduction in Africa. Several decades of grappling with World Bank loan conditionalities and poverty reduction strategies have, at best, yielded meager returns as poverty and underdevelopment persist. Thus,it investigated the implementation of World Bank loan conditionalities and their impact on social welfare in Nigeria. Specifically, the book is a scholarly contribution to unmask the tenuous link between loan conditionalities and politics of poverty reduction strategies in Nigeria. Fundamentally, it is divided in to six major chapters. The first chapter which is the introduction examines the methodological rigour and elegance of the study. Chapter two x-rays privatization of public enterprises; the third chapter interrogates Government funding of social welfare. In addition, chapter four explores the World Bank loan development assistance in relation to human capacity development in Nigeria; while the summary, conclusion and recommendation were in chapter five. The book is an invaluable asset in understanding while abject poverty persist in Nigeria, and Africa at large.

Many development programmes in the developing world have today been redirected in the name of poverty alleviation. However, what these programmes lack is an efficient monitoring system to track progress from poverty alleviation interventions. This work establishes a customized baseline poverty profile that will serve as a reference point for monitoring Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRSP).This work is especially suitable for developing countries that have devolved decades of Central Administrative Controls to Local and District Councils. Over the years, monetary parameters were used to assess rural poverty. This work uses non-monitoring indicators grouped into demographic, basic needs, assets, means of livelihood, social services and empowerment structures to determine poverty status of the population in an effort to evaluate the impact of development initiative. The analysis of this work should help local and district council officers to address the central issues in their effort at poverty alleviation. This work is especially useful also to Development Practitioners, Professionals in development and Administrators interested in eradicating poverty in the developing world.

Project Report from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, , course: Human Ecology, 38 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Food insecurity and poverty are the greatest global challenges facing the world today. Their redress is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable and inexcusable in the developing world particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Extreme poverty ravages the lives of one in every four in the developing world (i.e. 1.2 billion people). The farming of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is being promoted as a potential solution to the current high rates of malnutrition and poor health of the rural population, the degradation of tropical forests and the spread and intensification of poverty. However, the role of NTFPs in rural development in Ghana remains largely undervalued and understudied. This paper examines the contribution of NTFPs farming in enhancing poverty reduction, food security, sustainable forest management, and livelihoods improvement in the Sefwi Wiawso District (SWD) of the Western Region of Ghana. An exhaustive literature review and analysis of field data collected through administration of questionnaires, interviews and stakeholder consultations indicate that NTFPs are an important tool for addressing poverty amongst marginalised, forest-dependant communities in Ghana. 86% of farmers in SWD depend on ...

But, many countries such as the Asian Tigers have shown that with targeted, appropriate and adequate investment in human resource development through education, a society may be easily transformed from underdevelopment and poverty to prosperity and higher standard of living. With Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the international community committed for the first time as a whole to an expanded vision of poverty reduction and pro-poor growth, one that vigorously places human development at the center of social and economic progress in all countries. The MDGs also recognized the importance of creating a global; partnership for change. The paper examines the interaction between the two actors in the decision-making and implementation process of public policies, mainly drawing on the concept of good local governance. Here, ideas of decentralisation and civil society play an important role and nowadays often constitute an integral part of poverty reduction programmes in developing countries. The first chapter of the dissertation focuses on this linkage between local governance (including NGO participation) and improvements in public policy outcomes for local communities. Subsequently, different types of partnership between local governments and NGOs are presented and the assumed ideal-type for poverty reduction is pointed out. The MDGs comprise eight global objectives, one of them "The eradication of worldwide poverty", which is being measured by a set of economic indicators in order to derive respective strategies for halving destitution between 1990 and 2015. In the course of this work the success and shortfall of the implemented strategies will be analyzed for Sub - Saharan Africa, the region where the greatest share of the world´s poor reside. Furthermore, the chances and deficits that global development agenda such as the MDGs exhibit will be taken into deeper consideration highlighting the needs of the development assistance of the years to come. Ultimately, the future efforts of international institutions, governments and nongovernmental organizations with reference to poverty alleviation will be outlined and evaluated as far as Mr. Kim´s statement of ending poverty within a generation can be realized.

Tackling Poverty with Social Funds explores a strategy that engages citizens in small-scale projects designed to address public poverty issues, improve community living standards, and enhance the quality of life. The book focuses in part on citizen participation and social capital, analyzing the extent to which a social fund prepares a community to meet its own needs and solve its own problems. Marked by a rich, detailed description of stakeholder involvement in community-driven development, the book offers interesting insights into the character of civic and social life in local communities. It makes a compelling case for an integrated approach to development based on partnerships among the state, private sector, and civil society. Energy and Global Climate Change: Bridging the Sustainable Development Divide focuses attention on two urgent global development challenges faced by the UN and its member states: access to sustainable energy for all, and global climate change. This book presents compelling evidence about an often neglected aspect of the energy-climate change-development nexus faced by millions of poor: problems caused by the use of inefficient and polluting energy sources, and the lack of access to sustainable energy services. Based on a detailed examination of major UN global climate change and sustainable development negotiated outcomes over the course of several decades, this book argues in a powerful and insightful manner that intergovernmental negotiated outcomes aimed at solving the climate change and energy access challenges have been restricted by being placed in different negotiating silos. This “siloization” or compartmentalization has resulted in separate tracks of negotiated outcomes on two inextricably linked global development challenges; and, has thereby hindered prospects for integrated action. This book points out that the existence of these two silos is especially hard to ignore in light of the urgent UN-led quest for an integrated and universal post-2015 development agenda anticipated to be anchored by new sustainable development goals on energy access and climate change. By addressing the heavy reliance on inefficient and polluting energy services which result in indoor air pollution and short lived climate pollutants that tragically impact millions of poor people, this book highlights the unique importance of integrated action on the energy-poverty-climate change nexus in the UN’s post-2015 development era.

The various approaches that exist highly differ in the level of society they address. A world model: economies, trade, migration, security and development aid. This bookprovides the analytical capability to understand and explore the dynamics of globalisation. It is anchored in economic input-output models of over 200 countries and their relationships through trade, migration, security and development aid. The tools of complexity science are brought to bear and mathematical and computer models are developed both for the elements and for an integrated whole. Models are developed at a variety of scales ranging from the global and international trade through a European model of inter-sub-regional migration to piracy in the Gulf and the London riots of 2011. The models embrace the changing technology of international shipping, the impacts of migration on economic development along with changing patterns of military expenditure and development aid. A unique contribution is the level of spatial disaggregation which presents each of 200+ countries and their mutual interdependencies – along with some finer scale analyses of cities and regions. This is the first global model which offers this depth of detail with fully work-out models, these provide tools for policy making at national, European and global scales. Global dynamics: Presents in depth models of global dynamics. Provides a world economic model of 200+ countries and their interactions through trade, migration, security and development aid. Provides pointers to the deployment of analytical capability through modelling in policy development. Features a variety of models that constitute a formidable toolkit for analysis and policy development. Offers a demonstration of the practicalities of complexity science concepts. Development economics entail all the aspects of the development process especially meant for the developing countries to overcome the challenges that impede development. This can be through education, education and man power development, restructuring market incentives, incorporating favorable social and political approaches and practices among other factors.Human beings however need streamlined social and economic systems that are able to achieve development through major changes in social structures, national institutions, cultures and attitudes as well as eradication of poverty, reduction of income inequality and acceleration of economic growth. The developing world needs a multi-disciplinary approach and ideas so as to come out of the economic backward situation. Micheal, P describes that because of heterogeneity of the developing world, and the complexity of the development process, development economics must be eclectic, attempting to combine relevant concepts and theories from traditional economics analysis along with new models and broader multi-disciplinary approaches from historical and co temporally development experience of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Debraj Ray puts it that development economics studies economics of the developing world and has made excellent use of economic theory, econometrics, anthropology, sociology, political science, biology and demography. It needs a lot more dimensional approach to understand it.

Our case country Ghana, like many others in Africa, is characterized by, for example, mass poverty, huge foreign debts, poor socio-economic infrasturcture and entrepreneurial base, inability to meet the challenges of the forces of globalization, and heavy reliance on foreign loans and aid. Often times the development of the country has been the sole responsibility of a single entity, a government or a few ruling elites. It is argued in this book that to overcome the problems mentioned above, involving many actors (e.g. industry, government, universities, and the general public)will produce a collective effort, which will enable the actors to leverage their complementary capabilities to bring about a sustainable economic development. In this book we emphasize areas in which Ghana should invest now in order to effect sustainable development, which will translate into, example, poverty reduction, enabling environment for firms to emerge, grow and be competitive.

Child Poverty, Youth (Un)Employment, and Social Inclusion.

Worldwide child and youth poverty and deprivation remain the biggest barrier to achieving a better life in adulthood. Progress in lifting children out of poverty in the last decades has been slow and limited in the developing world, while the recent global economic crisis has exacerbated child poverty, youth unemployment, and social exclusion in many developed countries. By critically unraveling the long-term consequences of growing up poor, the close linkages between multiple deprivations and violation of human rights in childhood and adolescence, and their effects on labor market entry and future career in a number of developing and developed countries, this book significantly enriches the existing literature. Drawing on multiple disciplinary perspectives, it makes a forceful case for the eradication of child poverty to take center stage in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 3, University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück (WiSo), course: International Business and Management, language: English, abstract: This paper observes the relationship between multiple variables in order to determine whether Financial Inclusion can be used as a tool for poverty reduction in the Middle East and North Africa. There are many reports that identify this to be function to something very likely as a tool around the world; however, there has been limited work regarding financial inclusion and the Middle East and North Africa. Through qualitative and quantitative research, this paper examines the possibility of this theory working in MENA. Wide income disparities, combined with government corruption, religious dispositions, and an overall lack of money are contributing barriers to the unbanked. These factors greatly limit the use of this tool until other issues are tackled and governments commit to more policies that will be conducive to growth; banks must be more open to lending; and people will have to become more financially literate. The World Bank, Gallup, the IMF, and various authors, in addition to the World Bank FINDEX dataset are used to reference information conceded by well-respected authors in the financial-, development-, and in the government sector. Yuexiao Dong Sufficient Dimension Reduction for the Conditional Kth Moment

The scale and complexity of data sets have increased drastically in the light of development in modern technology. High-dimensional data poses many challenges for statisticians and is becoming the most important research topic in statistics. Sufficient dimension reduction aims at preserving all the relevant information for either regression or classification and effectively transforms high dimensional problem to lower dimensions. When the partial information, such as the mean regression function or higher conditional moment, is of interest, sufficient dimension reduction is tailored for such special targets. This text provides a general treatment of sufficient dimension reduction for the conditional kth moment. The notion of central kth moment central solution space (CKMSS) is introduced and studied through examples, simulation and empirical studies.

Biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation are both important societal goals demanding increasing international attention. While they may seem to be unrelated, the international policy frameworks that guide action to address them make an explicit assumption that conserving biodiversity will help to tackle global poverty. Part of the Conservation Science and Practice Series published with the Zoological Society of London, this book explores the validity of that assumption. The book addresses a number of critical questions: Which aspects of biodiversity are of value to the poor? Does the relationship between biodiversity and poverty differ according to particular ecological conditions? How do different conservation interventions vary in their poverty impacts? How do distributional and institutional issues affect the poverty impacts of interventions? How do broader issues such as climate change and the global economic system affect the biodiversity – poverty relationship at different scales? This volume will be of interest to policy-makers, practitioners and researchers concerned with understanding the potential – and limitations – of integrated approaches to biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation.

Revision with unchanged content. Development cooperation is a rather young field, which emerged only after World War II with the introduction of the Marshall Plan in an effort to aid Western Europe's recovery. Unfortunately, poverty today is as widespread as ever and the gap between wealthy developed countries and poor developing countries is still widening. One frequent criticism is that there is an insufficient amount of money that is spent on development cooperation for it to be successful. Yet there are many more problems and challenges involved which need to be addressed. This book identifies areas development cooperation needs to focus upon in order to be effective and calls for a global development strategy as the only way to bundle capital and expertise in the most efficient way. Development cooperation can be a success, with a global effort of all partners involved, a global reorganization of the development business and a refocus on key development areas, so that developing countries can be provided with a solid basis to grow out of poverty. Offering a solid analysis of development cooperation, this book provides useful to everybody interested in the topic: from people working in development cooperation to researchers and politicians.

CD MBA Dion Synergy. A Theoretical Model of Canada.s Comprehensive Approach

The comprehensive approach has been a new emerging phenomenon within the field of strategic studies, national security, and international defence. Former NATO secretary-general Rasmussen posited that this approach “not only makes sense—it is necessary”. Yet with the rise of asymmetric warfare and the emergence of new constructs, the comprehensive approach is not supported by a necessary framework, model, or theory. Indeed, if the military alone is unable to solve the root cause of conflicts, then other elements of national and international power must collaborate more closely. In Synergy—A Theoretical Model of Canada’s Comprehensive Approach, author, senior lecturer and strategic management consultant Eric Dion proposes a theoretical model for this new approach: How can such an integrated decision-making model be constructed for the comprehensive approach? Where and when, who and with whom, what, how, why, and to what effect can such a model be employed? Synergy answers these questions with an integrated theoretical model constructed of six management dimensions: the situational context, the sociocultural, the organisational structure, the strategic policies, the systemic processes, and the synergy dynamics. Together, these six dimensions fundamentally represent what would be the basic constructs for a more integrated theoretical model of the comprehensive approach. Taking a strategic management perspective on the comprehensive approach can open new perspectives within the fie...

Uchendu Egbezor Beyond the Primary Commodity Trap. Essays on Politics and Poverty in Africa

Beyond the Primary Commodity Trap offers an alternative paradigm for analysing African development from the current "aid and aids" narrative. Taking as its point of departure Africa's failure to extricate itself from over dependence on raw materials and its seeming inability to industrialise, it offers an analysis of the political forces that have shaped and continue to shape Africa's political economy. The book focuses particularly on the endemic poverty in the continent and how it interfaces with politics. Written with the general reader in mind, the book also examines some of the internal dynamics in Africa and how these combine with the continent's history and some other extraneous factors to explain the current conditions of economic poverty and the poverty of leadership in many parts of the continent.

Developing Countries in the World Trading System: The Uruguay Round and Beyond

Experience suggests that trade liberalization has contributed substantially to the remarkable growth of industrialised countries. However, for various reasons many developing countries have not yet been able to integrate successfully into global markets and reap the growth-inducing and poverty-reducing benefits of trade. This book argues that while developing countries are heavily represented in the WTO - accounting for about four fifths of its membership -there is still plenty of scope for the world trading system to work more effectively in their interests. The book examines the achievements of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in reforming the world trading system and the challenges to future reforms. It begins with an overview of the genesis of the world trading system and moves on to examine the key issues as they relate to developing countries. These include further liberalization of agricultural trade; abolition of the Multifibre Arrangement; environmental and labour standards; competition policy; regional integration in South East Asia; and the implications for developing Asian countries of the liberalization of the Chinese economy and its WTO membership. Furthermore, the book discusses the links between trade liberalization and poverty reduction -drawing on the experience of Asian countries - and puts forward arguments on how trade liberalization could effect a greater reduction in poverty. This is a timely and succinct presentation of the critical issues relat...

The progressive understanding of poverty include not only economic and material conditions, but also a lack of power, freedom and resources to decide and shape one's own life. Social and legal norms and economic structures based around sexuality have a tangible impact on people's physical security, bodily integrity, health, education, mobility and economic status. The expressions for the interwoven relation of poverty and sexuality are many. Many people with 'deviant' sexuality are subject to economic discrimination, leading to marginalization that has effect of reducing their livelihood opportunities. In this Publication the links between women's sexual rights and poverty in the African context is explored . It illustrates how the lack of protection and recognition of women's sexual rights as understood in the African context can be the cause and consequences of poverty. The publication provides arguments as to how addressing sexual rights of women in poverty alleviation programmes can contribute to the realization of meaningful development for the African women and a way forward as to how the issue of Sexual Rights and poverty can be fostered.

Rather, development requires a range of ongoing and integrated activities. Drawn from CCL's "Tools for Developing Successful Executives" program, the six-step model described in this report provides the basics for designing a system that works. The steps, each covered in its own section, range from "Find and use organizational support for creating a process" to "Define and communicate the critical role of the manager." The sections contain commonsense information about the issues to consider when designing a development system plus numerous practical examples.

Allie-Nieftagodien Shariefa Pro-Poor Tourism in Alexandra Since 1994

Tourism has increasingly been viewed as an important means to challenge poverty, especially in developing countries. Since the beginning of democracy in South Africa, the African National Congress(ANC) government has emphasised the importance of overcoming poverty, and identified tourism as an important intervention in pursuit of this objective. This study assesses "pro-poor" tourism initiatives in Alexandra Township since 1994, with particular focus on the arts and crafts at St Michael's Church and SA Jewel. It will investigate whether projects similar to bead craft, initiated at the same time with the same objectives have benefited the residents of Alexandra. Finally, the study will consider if tourism initiatives being implemented in Alexandra conform to 'sustainable development' objectives. The research reviews the literature on Tourism Development domestically and Local Economic Development. Furthermore the report extends to literature reviews specifically in Sustainable Tourism and Pro-Poor Tourism, its definitions and its examples in the tourism industry. It examines the various arguments for tourism development and alleviating poverty through these initiatives.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: A, , course: PhD, language: English, abstract: The poor, like others, too need financial products and services in order to build assets, manage consumption and mitigate risks. Microfinance, in recent times, has emerged as a powerful tool to provide access to some financial services to the poor. For decades, poverty alleviation has topped the International development agenda. United Nations Millennium Goals state that by 2015 the number of people living in extreme poverty should be half of what it was in 2000. Microfinance addresses the twin goals of financial inclusion and poverty alleviation in a way that builds self-esteem in the individual and self-sufficiency in the institution providing the financial services. Different models have emerged in microfinance delivery based on their clientele, focus area, interest rate, savings linkages, collateral, coverage and organizational/legal structure. With all the successes of the existing microfinance models, the herculean task of poverty alleviation still leaves enough space for innovative models. This study explores the potential of faith-based microfinance in complimenting the efforts of poverty alleviation and also overcoming the weaknesses in the existing models. Faith-based microfinance operate on distinct principles. The purpose of this study is to focus on the functioning of the faith based microfin...
