Offers solutions and best practices to respond to recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in the field Since the publication of the first edition of Environmental Impact Assessment in 2003, both the practice and theory of impact assessment have changed substantially. Not only has the field been subject to a great deal of new regulations and guidelines, it has also evolved tremendously, with a greater emphasis on strategic environmental, sustainability, and human health impact assessments. Moreover, there is a greater call for impact assessments from a global perspective. This Second Edition, now titled Impact Assessment to reflect its broader scope and the breadth of these many changes, offers students and practitioners a current guide to today's impact assessment practice. Impact Assessment begins with an introduction and then a chapter reviewing conventional approaches to the field. Next, the book is organized around recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in impact assessment process design and management, enabling readers to quickly find the material they need to solve tough problems, including: How to make impact assessments more influential, rigorous, rational, substantive, practical, democratic, collaborative, ethical, and adaptive How each problem and challenge-reducing process would operate at the regulatory and applied levels How each problem can be approached for different impact assessment types—sustainability assessment, strategic environmental assessment, project-level EIA, social impact assessment, ecological impact assessment, and health impact assessment How to link and combine impact assessment processes to operate in situations with multiple overlapping problems, challenges, and impact assessment types How to connect and combine impact assessment processes Each chapter first addresses the topic with current theory and then demonstrates how that theory is applied, presenting requirements, guidelines, and best practices. Summaries at the end of each chapter provide a handy tool for structuring the design and evaluation of impact assessment processes and documents. Readers will find analyses and new case studies that address such issues as multi-jurisdictional impact assessment, climate change, cumulative effects assessment, follow-up, capacity building, interpreting significance, and the siting of major industrial and waste facilities. Reflecting current theory and standards of practice, Impact Assessment is appropriate for both students and practitioners in the field, enabling them to confidently respond to a myriad of new challenges in the field.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, , language: English, abstract: A climate change mitigation mechanism, Reducing Emission from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) is anticipated to affect livelihoods of forest dependent communities. This study was conducted to establish this impact on livelihoods of local people in Rungwe District, Tanzania. Data were collected through questionnaires, group discussions, and interviews from three villages: Syukula, Ilolo and Kibisi. Results showed that households' annual income and crop production are higher after REDD+ implementation. The older respondents (>40 years old) considered REDD+ to be important for forest management compared to younger generation (<40 years old) (p<0.05). Similarly, the older respondents considered wood forest products such as fuelwood, charcoal, timber and poles to be reduced. There was a widespread awareness about REDD+'s objectives among household respondents. Therefore, REDD+ proponents should implement alternative sources of livelihoods to help local people improve their income and reduce dependence on the forest resources and eventually decrease deforestation and forest degradation.

Shorttitle: HIV/AIDS/TB in Kenya Mario J. Azevedo, Gwendolyn S. Prater, and Sandra Hayes argue that, without a deeper understanding of Kenya's cultural norms and practices on HIV/TB, which are spreading alarmangly in Kenya, scholars and health professionals will not be able to eradicate or meaningfully contain the devastating impact of the twin epidemics. A focus on factors such as the environment and the distribution and management of scarce resources alone represent only a fraction of what is needed to restore the health of the people and have them respond positively to the efforts made by the government authorities, health care providers, and humanitarians of international organizations. The three authors acknowledge the small victories Kenya has achieved against the burden of disease. However, without an integrated approach to the reduction and eradication of the many man-made and environmental factors responsible for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and other ailments, which together weaken and inhibit people's immune system, Kenya's health future will remain bleak for many years to come.

Traditional environmental impact assessment (EIA) usually focuses on single-project development undertaken by single proponents in a narrowly defined physical area and defined time frame. The EIA carried out by SWAIWRMP eventually didn't address the cumulative environmental impact. That is why cumulative impact assessment especially for water sector project is very important and essential. There are a number of existing and proposed infrastructures in the Sub-Project area, which might have cumulative impact. This study has assessed cumulative impact for the compartment one of SWAIWRMP.

Since 1990s to date, there has been a growing global interest among researchers in impact assessment of research and development (R&D). Attention has specifically been placed on the impact of R&D interventions on target beneficiaries. In this regard, this work, besides reviewing studies on impact assessment of agricultural research in Tanzania it documents the experience of Tanzanian farmers in the use of innovations by focusing on rice research-based innovations. Adaptation rather than adoption of innovations is evident in smallholder rice farming. Moreover, it sheds light on the limitation of the production-based reductionist approach in assessing the impact of research on food security. The economic costs and benefits of rice research in rain-fed agriculture in Tanzania are also presented. In general, this book should be of great interest to students in agricultural extension, rural sociology, agricultural economics, development studies as well as managers of agricultural research.

The ‘minimalist’ approach that once dominated microfinance outreach in the past is now a fading memory. A growing number of studies are suggesting a more ‘integrative’ approach to support the marginalized and ultra-poor households. This study highlights the impact of the integrated programs, namely Productive Safety Net Program-PLUS (food aid plus microcredit) and food aid from the Eastern part of Ethiopia. Quasi-panel data-set were used to evaluate the impact of the integrated projects. The result from the endogenous switching regression as well as the recursive bivariate probit models revealed that households who chose to participate in the integrated programs showed a positive & significant impact in their livestock holdings and consumption expenditure, and they better afforded education and health costs. Nevertheless, beneficiaries of non-integrated (food aid) program did not show significant impact on the consumption expenditure & livestock holdings, and they are less likely to afford education and health cost compared to the non-beneficiaries.

Petri Nets were defined for the study of discrete events systems and later extended for many purposes including dependability assessment. In our knowledge, no book deals specifically with the use of different type of PN to dependability. We propose in addition to bring a focus on the adequacy of Petri net types to the study of various problems related to dependability such as risk analysis and probabilistic assessment. In the first part, the basic models of PN and some useful extensions are briefly recalled. In the second part, the PN are used as a formal model to describe the evolution process of critical system in the frame of an ontological approach. The third part focuses on the stochastic Petri Nets (SPN) and their use in dependability assessment. Different formal models of SPN are formally presented (semantics, evolution rules…) and their equivalence with the corresponding class of Markov processes to get an analytical assessment of dependability. Simplification methods are proposed in order to reduce the size of analytical model and to make it more calculable. The introduction of some concepts specific to high level PN allows too the consideration of complex systems. Few applications in the field of the instrumentation and control (l&C) systems, safety integrated systems (SIS) emphasize the benefits of SPN for dependability assessment.

This book is the third in our series describing patient-centered methodologies (PCM). It focuses on both the curative potential and the successful curative impact of medical interventions. It introduces an assessment procedure through which the curative impact of some particular medical intervention against a progressive and potentially fatal disease such as cancer may be ascertained. The assessment procedure’s conclusions are probabilistic in nature. They are generated on an individually tailored, patient-by-patient basis. The curative efficacy of a medical intervention is calculated as a time-phased probability for each separate patient. The intervention’s overall curative efficacy is also calculated, probabilistically, for a given patient population.Suppose that a patient is diagnosed with some form of cancer. Suppose, further, that the patient undergoes a medical intervention known to possess some curative potential, but not guaranteed to cure everybody. For how long after the intervention must that patient wait with no evidence of further disease progression before concluding that the intervention was successful? How much time must elapse with no evidence of disease before concluding that the cancer has been beaten and, therefore, that the patient was cured? The assessment procedure introduced in this book attempts to answer precisely this question.Patient-centered diagnosis, prognosis, and cure assessment all rely on a methodology that generates individually tailored pro...

The quantitative assessment of the impact of climate change on water availability and water resources management requires knowledge of climate, hydro(geo)logical and water resources models, and particularly the relationships between each of them. This book brings together world experts on each of these aspects, distilling each complex topic into concise and easy to understand chapters, in which both the uses and limitations of modelling are explored. The book concludes with a set of case studies using real-life examples to illustrate the steps required and the problems that can be faced in assessing the potential impacts of climate change on water resource systems. For students, scientists, engineers and decision-makers alike, this book provides an invaluable and critical look at the information that is provided by climate models, and the ways it is used in modelling water systems. A key focus is the exploration of how uncertainties may accrue at each stage of an impacts assessment, and the reliability of the resulting information. The book is a practical guide to understanding the opportunities and pitfalls in the quantitative assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation in the water resource sector.

It uses the concept of sustainability within pluralist theoretical framework in order to investigate the claims that the process of state and EC policies operate on the assumption that local agricultural systems in rural societies are homogenous. This thesis questions such generalisation by arguing that the realities of rural people are local, complex, diverse and dynamic. The study argues that social, environmental, political and cultural factors significantly affect the implementation of top-down policies on rural livelihoods.

The livelihood problems in marginal land areas are mainly related to natural resources degradation and/or to severe constraints in the realization of potential benefits from natural resources. Knowledge of the distribution and types of LU/LC change are believed to be important resource base indicators with regard to land degradation and livelihoods.

Stationary electrical connections and contacts, such as power connections, are commonly applied in electric power systems used for generation, transmission and distribution of electric energy. Several different degradation mechanisms can increase the contact resistance and might therefore reduce the power connection's lifetime. The degradation by film development is often considered as a reason for contact failure. In this research work, the impact of film development produced by chemical reactions, such as oxidation, on the long-term behavior of stationary electrical connections and contacts was studied with crossed rods. Typical material systems for electric power systems were considered in this study: Cu-ETP bare, silver-, nickel- or tin-coated, Al99.5 and AlMgSi0.5. The initial contact resistance and the plastic deformed area of the considered material systems was measured in experimental tests. The film's impact was further determined through comparative experimental studies in air and inert gas.During the experimental tests on perpendicularly crossed rods, other degradation mechanisms were suppressed. The film's impact within the formation phase was studied in more detail. Moreover, the dependency on different environments was tested. Supplementary studies were performed at low forces as well as analytical assessment of the impact of radial and axial film growth on circular contact points. As result, a general description of the interactions between film deve...

Explores methods for the representation and treatment of uncertainty in risk assessment In providing guidance for practical decision-making situations concerning high-consequence technologies (e.g., nuclear, oil and gas, transport, etc.), the theories and methods studied in Uncertainty in Risk Assessment have wide-ranging applications from engineering and medicine to environmental impacts and natural disasters, security, and financial risk management. The main focus, however, is on engineering applications. While requiring some fundamental background in risk assessment, as well as a basic knowledge of probability theory and statistics, Uncertainty in Risk Assessment can be read profitably by a broad audience of professionals in the field, including researchers and graduate students on courses within risk analysis, statistics, engineering, and the physical sciences. Uncertainty in Risk Assessment: Illustrates the need for seeing beyond probability to represent uncertainties in risk assessment contexts. Provides simple explanations (supported by straightforward numerical examples) of the meaning of different types of probabilities, including interval probabilities, and the fundamentals of possibility theory and evidence theory. Offers guidance on when to use probability and when to use an alternative representation of uncertainty. Presents and discusses methods for the representation and characterization of uncertainty in risk assessment. Uses examples to clearly illustrate ideas and concepts.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Education - Educational Tests & Measurements, grade: 72, University of Cumbria, course: Secondary Maths Teaching, language: English, abstract: The analogy of whether weighing a pig makes it fatter seems to refer to the debate over whether assessment is an effective way of raising standards. This introduces the dichotomy of whether summative or formative assessment is the most useful tool for raising standards. There may also be variables which impact on the success of assessment procedures: one of the central factors may be the role of the subject leader in assessment policies, although the ethos of the school and socio-demographic factors of the area it is situated in may also be influential. 'Weighing the pig' seems to be polysemous in that there are multiple ways of raising standards, some of which do not use any kind of assessment. This essay will examine the above factors and attempt to come to a tentative conclusion about the best way to raise standards. This paper is supported by a wealth of contemporary educational literature and theories, as well as considering a psychological perspective. It is also informed by a number of appendices collected through the author's personal teaching practice and research.

For the study of impact of artificial recharge of roof top rainwater on the quantity and quality of groundwater, the geomatic approach was employed for identifying sites for construction of roof top rainwater harvesting structures by preparing various spatial maps. Monitoring and assessment of groundwater levels was carried out in the study area. Normal annual rainfall in the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad is 821mm with unutilized non-committed surplus monsoon runoff. Artificial recharge of ground water through rooftop rainwater harvesting was done by constructing three recharge structures each with a capacity of 1,00,000 litres. A total rainfall of 658.1 mm has been found to be recorded and a total quantity of 23, 96,160 liters of groundwater has been found to be recharged during the four months period in the campus.
