Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) also known as peanut and earthnut, is an important oilseed crop largely grown by resource poor smallholder farmers under rainfed conditions. These farmers employ different tillage practices in the production of the crop. Many farmers perform tillage operations without being aware of the effect of these operations on soil physical properties and crop responses. It is carried out mainly to loosen the upper layer of soil, to mix the soil with fertilizer and organic residues, to control weeds, and to create a suitable seedbed for germination and plant growth. The theme of nutrient management in integrated way for increasing the soil fertility is gaining ground throughout the world in recent years due to high cost of fertilizer and reduced availability of organic manures. The common bean is an important food and cash crop in many regions of the world. In Africa alone, it provides food for more than 100 million people and is a critical source of income for rural households. Common bean yields, however, have dropped in the last ten years. This decline is the result of poor soil fertility and nutrient depletion as well as high incidences of insect pests, key among them being the bean stem maggot (BSM) and the black bean aphid (BBA). To address soil nutrient depletion and the accompanying declining agricultural productivity, integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) has been adapted as a framework for enhancing crop productivity through combining fertilizer use with other soil fertility management technologies, adapted to local conditions. The book evaluates the influence of soil fertility treatments on yield and yield components of the common bean. Additionally, to establish the potential links between soil fertility and crop protection, the effect of ISFM interventions on the incidence of the BSM and the BBA is also being assessed.

Nowadays, there is significant recognition about Indigenous Knowledge (IK) from many dimensions. In eastern Uganda, soils have been characterised as limited in Nitrogen. Soil management technologies were therefore incorporated into farming systems in Tororo district, eastern Uganda. The objectives were to determine: the optimal combinations of legume cover crops or biomass transfer species and inorganic fertilizers for replenishing fertility; the acceptance levels and the farmer perceptions of 8 shrub- and tree species. Partial budgeting, linear programming analysis and descriptive statistics were used as analytical tools. 100% Mucuna pruriens incorporation and 0.9 t ha-1 Tithonia diversifolia incorporation with an inorganic nitrogen application at the rate of 30 kilograms hectare-1 were found to be the optimal soil management options on 0.045 and 0.872 hectares of land respectively, with investment costs of 495,120 Uganda Shillings.The major problematic aspects were technology accessibility and labour constraints. The strengthening of advisory services, government facilitated input delivery through private sector supply would play a critical role in soil fertility replenishment in Uganda.

India is one of the largest producer of safflower and ranks first in acreage, accounting about 36% of the world total area. Nutrient management is the major factor which influences the productive capacity of soils. Fertilizer is the major input through which the productivity can be increased by exploiting the varietal potential, since the cost of inputs of major nutrients through chemical fertilizers is increasing. Hence, this supports the integrated nutrient management approach not only to boost the production but also to preserve the ecosystem and to maintain its health. The conjunctive use of organics with the nitrogen fertilizer increased the use efficiency of nitrogen, improves the soil health and minimizes soil pollution. The results showed that performance of safflower crop improved significantly with integrated use of inorganic and organic sources of N (Farm Yard Manure/Poultry manure/Vermicompost) when compared with the application of inorganic N alone. Among the different combinations tried, application of 50 % N through inorganic fertilizer + 50% N through VC recorded highest seed yield, oil yield and also improves soil fertility leading to better soil health.

The best plant growth of onion resulted from poultry manure with bio-fertilizer. The bio-fertilizer resulted an increase in the parameters of onion plant as compared to without bio-fertilizer treatment. The poorest plant growth observed from farmer practices without bio-fertilizer treatment. It was found that combined application of organic manure and chemical fertilizer along with bio-fertilizer improved soil fertility, soil physical and chemical properties and increased crop yields that resulted in sustained and successful crop production. Therefore, it is suggested to make a fertilizer/ manure management strategy which ensures sufficient nutrient supply for high and stable productivity of onion.

Difference in performance of cut flower like Gerbera,was primarily accounted to variation in soil moisture regime. Gerbera plants planted in June produced the best response in terms of vegetative growth , floral characteristics and flower yield. The most favourable response of June planting was observed due to collective effect of better soil moisture conditions, lesser diurnal variation in temperature ,and better inflow of nutrients. These observations aided in establishing soil-climate analogues for open field Gerbera. Integrated nutrient management based treatments produced differential response on vegetative growth , flowering characteristics, flower yield, soil fertility status, soil microbial properties and nutrient accumulation in leaves. Invariably, out of three organic manures viz., Pig manure, farmyard manure and Cocopith when applied along with 50% chemical fertilizers, produced a much better response than when applied alone. DRIS ( Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System ) based leaf nutrient norms helped in tailoring the fertilizer requirement of open field Gerbera, without incurring any nutrient deficit during the entire growth period.

The most important field pests of common beans is bean flies. There is interaction of bean fly with root rot and Fusarium wilt disease complex in soils with depleted nutrients causing yield loss. Alternative management strategies were evaluated in Kenya in regions with severe decline in soil fertility to optimize yields. There was variation in bean fly infestation and damage in the cultivars and fertilizer rates during different seasons and locations. Plant resistance and response to fertilizer were influenced by environmental conditions, location specific and season. Phosphorus fertilizer increased growth and grain yield but didn’t reduce infestation and plant damage, while Organic manure did. Efficiency in P- Acquisition was determined to be important in plant tolerance to bean fly . Cultivar selection is important factor in developing IPM strategy for bean fly control. Resistant varieties have morphological, physiological or biochemical factors that when combined with soil fertility amendments are effective in control. This book is recommended for research scientist, agricultural extension service providers, and university and middle level agricultural college students.

This investigation addresses the balancing of fertilizer application rates for a major cereal crop, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Mollisol of Uttarakhand by developing fertilizer adjustment equation-based targeted yield concept. Two approaches were followed to develop the equations for optimizing the rates of N-P-K fertilizers: 1. only chemical fertilizer, and 2. Integrated nutrient management (INM) by using the components like Nutrient requirement (NR), Contribution from soil (Cs), Contribution from fertilizers (CF) and Contribution from FYM (CFYM). The outcome of the study can successfully be used in the larger parts of tarai region of Uttarakhand as a potent guide for efficient fertilizer management by reducing cost of cultivation, increasing fertilizer-use efficiency and keeping the soil-environment pollution free, and maintaining soil quality and soil health with judicious use of chemical fertilizers.

In India, there is sufficient availability of organic manures like animal dung manure (791.6 mt), crop residues (603.5 mt), green manure (4.50 m ha), rural compost (148.3 mt), city compost (12.2 mt) and biofertilizer (0.41 mt)and these may become a good substitute of chemical fertilizers to maintain the soil physico-chemical and biological properties. The incorporation of organic manures improves the nutrient content and uptake. Although organic manures contain plant nutrients in small quantities as compared to the fertilizer, the presence of growth promoting principles like enzyme and hormones besides plant materials make them essential for improvement of soil fertility and productivity.For better utilization of resources and to produce crops with less expenditure, INM is the best approach. In this approach all the possible source of plant nutrients are applied based on economic consideration and the balance required for the crop is supplemented with chemical fertilizers. The combined use of organic and inorganic sources of plant nutrient not only pushes the production and profitability of field crops, but also it helps in maintaining the permanent fertility status of the soil.

Business Project Management, language: English, abstract: Over the past two decades, the Pakistani construction sector is experiencing many problems particularly housing shortages, cost and time overruns, and construction defects due to lack of adequate project management practices. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of project management practices in Pakistan compared to the UK to avoid time and cost overruns of construction projects. A blend of primary and secondary data collection methods are used to achieve this aim where primary data is collected through survey method. The findings of the paper suggest that Pakistani construction industry is different from the UK in terms of not adequately practicing most of the project management practices. A majority of construction participants agreed that such practices are inherent to avoid the cost/time overruns but some problematic factors are hindering the implementation of those practices in Pakistan.Some of the critical factors include changes in the scope of the project, lack of knowledge, skills and experience, fear of change, lack of top management commitment, and excessive bureaucracy. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations to Pakistani construction sector explaining how they can adopt modern PM practices undertaken in developed countries ...

Soil erosion has been one of the major problems undermining agricultural production in Ethiopia. Consequently, efforts are being made by the government to tackle the adverse effect of soil erosion via Food-for-Work and Cash-for-Work programs. However, the existing literature shows that the achievements of such programs are far from the expectations. Does such an experience mean that there is no hope for soil conservation practices in Ethiopia? Absolutely it is doubtful, the problem could have been rather, the campaigns that have been undertaken in Ethiopia for soil conservation practices have failed to consider local peoples' willingness to pay for such projects from the very initiation of conservation measures. This motivates that, adequate understanding of the socio economic circumstances is required to determine the household's soil conservation demand behavior and the factors that determine their willingness to pay for it. Hence, this book explores the value that the rural households have attached to soil conservation measure using the non marketed valuation technique called Contingent valuation method.
