Alex Ritsema A Dutch Castaway on Ascension Island in 1725

On 5 May 1725 a Dutch ship's officer, Leendert Hasenbosch, was set ashore on the desert island of Ascension in the South Atlantic Ocean, as a punishment for sodomy. He tried to survive on turtles and birds but found very little water on the barren island. He wrote a diary. He probably died after about half a year. In January 1726 British mariners found his tent, diary and other things and brought the diary to England. In 1726 a first English version of the diary of the Dutch castaway was published. Other versions followed in 1728, 1730 and 1976. Who was the castaway? The truth was disclosed by the Dutch historian Michiel Koolbergen (1953-2002), in a posthumously published book in Dutch. With the support of Michiel Koolbergen's family and publisher, this new book discloses the truth in English. This book is the second edition, with some improvements compared to the original edition of 2006. This book is illustrated with line drawings, both historic ones and by the Dutch artist Anneke de Vries.

Edward Anomanyo Win by Integrating Solid Waste Management with Bioreactor Treatment

In a lot of communities in developing countries and in Accra Ghana, for that matter, solid waste management is characterized by single method approaches such as collect-and-dump. Lesser social acceptability of dump sites and inadequate operational funding often lead to collapse of these management systems. Solid waste quantities and composition in such communities present an opportunity to plan and operate management strategies that address social, economic and environmental impacts of the waste. Integrating strategies as collection and sorting for recycling, stakeholder (private investors, policy makers/management and the public) involvement and bioreactor treatment will yield optimum benefits to operational funds, clean environment and to society; a win-win-win scenario that must be appealing to policy makers and investors.

A volume in Niels Bohr Professorship Lectures in Cultural PsychologySeries Editors Brady Wagoner, Aalborg University, Nandita Chaudhary, University of Delhiand Pernille Hviid, University of CopenhagenCultural Psychology studies how persons and social-cultural worlds mutually constitute one another. It ispremised on the idea that culture is within us-in every moment in which we live our human lives, in themeaningful worlds we have created ourselves. In this perspective, encounters with others fundamentallytransform the way we understand ourselves. With the increase of globalization and multiculturalexchanges, cultural psychology becomes the psychological science for the 21st century. No longer can weignore questions about how our cultural traditions, practices, beliefs, artifacts and other people constitutehow we approach, understand, imagine and remember the world. The Niels Bohr Professorship Lectures inCultural Psychology series aims to highlight and develop new ideas that advance our understanding of these issues. This second volume in the series features an address by Tania Zittoun and Alex Gillespie, which is followed by commentary chapters and theirresponse to them. In their lecture, Zittoun and Gillespie propose a model of the relation between mind and society, specifically the way in whichindividuals develop and gain agency through society. They theorise and demonstrate a two-way interaction: bodies moving through society accumulatedifferentiated experiences, which bec...

Jackline Odero Re-Defining Governance in Africa

Changes in analysing prospects for socio-economic and political development in Africa has in the recent past shifted greatly to include actors outside of the traditional political elite category. This change in analysis has coincided with a new conceptualisation of civil society; the role of civil society is become more crucial in governance, and especially in pursuing socio-economic and political development in Africa. This book explores changes in Africa's governance processes and the opportunities that the changing context is creating for substantive civil society engagement. It examines Africa's democratic processes highlighting some core aspects of the democratic consolidation endeavours to date. In this analysis, Uganda's contemporary civil society context is used as a case illustration to examine how changing governance processes are creating opportunities for civil society engagement in national policy framework.

Villages in Indonesia

The wide variety of ethnic groups in Indonesia is reflected in the ethnic diversity among Indonesian villages. Until now, descriptive studies of village life have been virtually nonexistent except in the Dutch language. This collection of comprehensive surveys of thirteen villages in Indonesia provides the first major study of this fundamental level of Indonesian society in the post-colonial period. The studies are based on first-hand field experience by outstanding Indonesian, Dutch, and American scholars. The villages included are representative of the variety of social, political, economic, and religious systems in the major island regions: Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sumbawa, Timor, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Ambon, and West Irian. Most of the contributors are anthropologists, but a sociologist, an agronomist, and an authority on adat law are also represented. Although the articles reflect the particular interests of the individual authors, certain general anthropological topics - such as demography, settlement patterns, subsistence economy, land tenure, and social and political structures - are covered in each to allow for comparisons among the studies. The editor has added a history of Indonesian village studies, and in a concluding chapter he makes general observations about village life in Indonesia. In addition to illustrating the range of Indonesia's ethnic diversity, these village surveys provide greater understanding of the social phenomena and processes that form a basic ...

The concept of power presupposes that there are those who wield power and those who are ruled in the society. But, as times and society keeps on changing, the power barons also change tact in their attempt to cling on to power. Thus, Sociological theory was used in metaphors of power to analyse the relationship between power and change in society. Stylistics criticism was employed to unravel the dramatic elements used by the playwrights to articulate the metaphors of power and change in the selected texts.

Alfred Mully Adoption of IFRS in the Netherlands. Impact on value relevance

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich BWL - Bank, Börse, Versicherung, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Listed Dutch firms are required by law to prepare their financial statements in accordance with the International financial Statements (IFRS) since 2005. Before 2005, listed Dutch firms prepared their financial statements using Dutch law, Title 9 of book two of the Dutch Civil Code. It is interesting to investigate the effect of the implementation of IFRS. Is the quality of the financial statements improved by the implementation of IFRS for the users of the financial statements, such as investors, suppliers and banks? This question can be answered in many ways, looking at different characteristics of the accounting information, for example the comparability, the relevance, the reliability and the understandability. In this thesis the relevance will be studied. Information has the quality of relevance when it influences the economic decisions of users by helping them evaluate past, present or future events or conforming, or correcting, their past evaluations. (IFRS Handbook, 2007, p. 40) In order to be relevant the accounting information must reflect the information needs of the users in valuing a company. In order to determine the market price of a company, investors need accounting information that reflects the share price of a company. The research done studying the relevance of accounting information for valuating companies is called value-relevance research. The im...

Rupert Lockwood Black Armada. Australia and the Struggle for Indonesian Independence 1942-49

So incisive is Rupert Lockwood's account of Australian assistance to the Indonesian rebellion against the Dutch that Lord Louis Mountbatten of Burma, Supreme Commander, Southeast Asia Command and the leader of the Anglo-Dutch intervention in Java in 1945, was moved to write to Lockwood, "I have read all you have written with great interest and it explains a lot that happened to us in South East Asia Command Headquarters."Rupert Lockwood, correspondent for such diverse newspapers as the Melbourne Herald and Tribune, a journalist in Moscow, radical publicist and veteran of the Petrov inquiry, witnessed many of the events he so vividly describes. He recalls the campaign to release Indonesian political prisoners detained by the Dutch in Australian POW camps and examines the boycotts and mutinies in Australia that crippled Dutch attempts to reoccupy their former colony. He reveals deep-going anti-colonial attitudes not often suspected in White Australia, discusses the impact of the union boycotts on the armed forces and war supplies of the only foreign regime to which Australia has ever played host, and brings to light Australian ambitions for an independent influence in Asia.More than forty contemporary cartoons and photographs and previously unpublished stills from the Australian film Indonesia Calling unite with the text to produce an exciting and moving account of a critical period in Australia's foreign relations.

In the mid-19th century, many Dutch immigrants were drawn to the Midwestern United States. Most were farmers, escaping low salaries and high taxes in the Netherlands. My great-grandparents were among these, settling in the south part of Chicago and nearby. This area was called Roseland and South Holland. Families from among these immigrants founded the Dutch or First Reformed Church of Roseland. An important part of their settlement was the Dutch or First Reform Church of Roseland. As it grew so did the families. This is the genealogy of the ancestors of my mother's parents. It was done for our family, but others may find it useful. The main trees included are Vanderbilt, DeVos and VanVuuren. The genealogies within the U.S. are quite solid. To the Dutch Republic, even more than to Florence at an earlier day, is the world indebted for practical instruction in that great science of political equilibrium which must always become more and more important as the various states of the civilized world are pressed more closely together, and as the struggle for pre-eminence becomes more feverish and fatal.-John Lothrop Motley, from the PrefaceMotley spent five years in Dresden, Brussels, and the Hague to produce, in 1856, this popular three-volume history hailed by readers of the time and recognized by scholars since as a standard of the field. The lessons for modern society Motley finds in the microcosm of Holland continue to hold true in today's uncertain political environment, and his dramatic narrative and eloquent, lyrical prose remain a delight. Hope Tichaezana Chichaya Human Security and Civil Society in Africa

It is sorely the responsibility of the state to provide security to its own citizens. But sometimes the challenge of failing states in Africa results in ethical attacks against the state from non-state actors. Usually the response could be to condemn, correct, coalesce, command or commend the state to behave accordingly. But such a response especially by the civil society requires a comprehensive analytical framework of its role, hence human security. This book attempts to analyse the role of the civil society in promoting human security in contexts of increased vulnerability. A case study of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance is used given the deplorable context of the decade of crisis in Zimbabwe (1998-2008). This must have book for university and college libraries, for NGOs, researchers and practitioners in peacebuilding, human security, and civil society and even for policy analysts. This is because the book identifies and evaluates strategies in advancing human security by the civil society and then further suggests further factors to consider towards enhancing it. The book gives a glaring clarity of the influence of the civil society and state relations in Zimbabwe.

John Lothrop Motley The Rise of the Dutch Republic - Volume 1

To the Dutch Republic, even more than to Florence at an earlier day, is the world indebted for practical instruction in that great science of political equilibrium which must always become more and more important as the various states of the civilized world are pressed more closely together, and as the struggle for pre-eminence becomes more feverish and fatal.- John Lothrop Motley, from the PrefaceMotley spent five years in Dresden, Brussels, and the Hague to produce, in 1856, this popular three-volume history hailed by readers of the time and recognized by scholars since as a standard of the field. The lessons for modern society Motley finds in the microcosm of Holland continue to hold true in today's uncertain political environment, and his dramatic narrative and eloquent, lyrical prose remain a delight. The author's respect for the people of the Netherlands and their triumphs as a nation still shines through, and this love letter to the Dutch Republic retains the power to instruct and inform.AUTHOR BIO:American diplomat and historian John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877) studied law at Harvard and Göttingen, in Germany, where he befriended Otto von Bismarck. Elizabeth E. Graves The Minangkabau Response to Dutch Colonial Rule in the Nineteenth Century

Despite the considerable expansion of scholarly studies of Minangkabau society in recent years, the paucity of historical research on West Sumatra is still notable. Especially is this so for the nineteenth century, where, apart from the new perspectives provided in Christine Dobbin's series of articles on the Padri Wars, virtually nothing has been published during the past decade. A significant study dealing with this period that certainly merited publication was the 1971 University of Wisconsin dissertation of Elizabeth E. Graves, which, following her revision, we are now pleased to bring out in our Monograph Series. In this revision Dr. Graves was not able to draw on Dobbin's work and other germane material published during the last few years, but most of the data she has marshaled and analyzed cannot be found in other published sources, and there is no doubt that her monograph fills many of the extensive gaps in our knowledge of nineteenth century Minangkabau society and its interaction with Dutch political and economic power. Moreover, those familiar with Taufik Abdullah's classic study, Schools and Politics: The Kaum Muda in West Sumatra (1927-1933), will find an excellent complement in her chapters on the development of secular education during this earlier period. In publishing this study, the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project is confident that it provides an important addition to the regional dimension of Indonesian history and illuminating insights into ...

Rousseau Jean-Jacques TheSocial Contract

With an Introduction by Derek Matravers. In The Social Contract Rousseau (1712-1778) argues for the preservation of individual freedom in political society. An individual can only be free under the law, he says, by voluntarily embracing that law as his own. Hence, being free in society requires each of us to subjugate our desires to the interests of all, the general will. Some have seen in this the promise of a free and equal relationship between society and the individual, while others have seen it as nothing less than a blueprint for totalitarianism. The Social Contract is not only one of the great defences of civil society, it is also unflinching in its study of the darker side of political systems.

Our argument is that civil society should be involved in the five key Areas (among others) which are: information collection and dissemination; Policy development consultation; Policy implementation, Assessment and monitoring and Advocacy for environmental justice. Generally, environmental governance is defined as a concept in political ecology and environmental policy that advocates sustainability as the supreme consideration for managing all human activities political, social and economic. It should be participatory, involving a wide range of stakeholders including government, business and civil society, and emphasizes whole system management.

Soemarsaid Moertono State and Statecraft in Old Java. A Study of the Later Mataram Period, 16th to 19th Century

Soemarsaid Moertono was born in East Java in 1922 and entered the Indonesian Civil Service in 1944. In 1962, before he came to the United States, he was teaching at Malang in the Academy of Public Administration under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In 1964 he successfully submitted this study as a M.A. thesis in the Department of History, Cornell University. Several Indonesian Dutch scholars, as well as contemporary Dutch observers, have examined aspects of Javanese government during the Later Mataram period, but few studies are at present available in the English language. The outstanding exception, to which Mr. Moertono pays tribute, is the late Professor Schrieke's Indonesian Sociological Studies, Volume II, The Hague, 1957, which is a translation of some of Professor Schrieke's unpublished manuscripts. In addition to published Dutch sources, Mr. Moertono has used his own substantial knowledge of Javanese literature, and, as a result, the reader of this study has the sensation that he is being helped to see the situation in Later Mataram from within. The reader will become aware of the rich contents of the Javanese sources, for which Dr. Th. G. Th. Pigeaud has recently provided a valuable survey in the first volume of his Literature of Java, The Hague, 1967. Perhaps students will be attracted to the study of the almost entirely unexplored Javanese context of Dutch activities in Java.Students of contemporary and near-contemporary Java will certainl...

In this insightful and entertaining book, Schneier weaves together ideas from across the social and biological sciences to explain how society induces trust. He shows the unique role of trust in facilitating and stabilizing human society. He discusses why and how trust has evolved, why it works the way it does, and the ways the information society is changing everything.

Judit Gera Structures of Subjugation in Dutch Literature

This book examines both classic and less-known works of Dutch literature from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. Its starting-point is that both authors and readers are born into a network of ideologies. But how do these ideologies work, and how do they serve to legitimize various forms of subjugation? Judit Gera surveys literary representations of the Dutch colonial experience and of women's lives in male-dominated societies, showing how colonial and gender-based forms of subjugation are interrelated and often intersect.Judit Gera is Professor of Dutch Literature at the Eötvös Loránd University Budapest, Hungary.

Sophie Falsini The Euromaidan.s Effect on Civil Society. Why and How Ukrainian Social Capital Increased after the Revolution of Dignity

Sophie Falsini presents a fascinating analysis of the current state and future prospects of Ukrainian civil society in light of the 2013-2014 events. Since then, the country has been shaken by both socio-political disorders and a deep humanitarian emergency, also exacerbated by the crisis of internally displaced people. Yet, it is under these same premises that civil society emerged as a main societal actor in post-Euromaidan politics, development, and reform. Through its war relief work and the endeavors to lead Ukraine towards democratization, civil society has, to a considerable degree, offset the lack of an efficient state administration and activated vital components of Ukrainian social capital. In respect to these achievements, Falsini explores the way and the extent to which the events occurring in Ukraine since late 2013-the Euromaidan revolution, the annexation of Crimea, and the war in the East-have contributed to the growth of social capital as well as to the resulting change in the shape and in the structure of civil society in the country.Through a multidimensional approach, combining theoretical interpretation with empirical analysis, the study examines Ukraine's transformed civil society in terms of its social relations, societal networks and resources, and collective action. Based on the theory of social capital after Lin Nan, the empirical analysis revolves around the case studies of 12 civil society organizations active in providing help to internally dis...

Dimitrios Xefteris Institutions of Direct Democracy and Happiness

This monograph studies the implications that institutions of direct democracy have on the happiness of a society, in a framework where the authority is interested both in implementing its ideal policy and in its re-election. It is shown that, in cases where authorities have full information about the social distribution of opinions, political activity drives a positive measure of authority types to choose the socially preferred policy. It is, also, shown that if the authority possesses a relatively low level of information about the distribution of opinions of the society, referenda in a great variety of cases offer a high level of happiness to the society and, thus, a high re-election probability to the authority. When the authority possesses full information about the distribution of opinions of the society, and the society is unaware of this fact, referenda also have a positive effect on social happiness and sequentially to the re-election probability of the authority. The optimal actions of the authority are described for the different combinations of the type of the authority and the specific distribution of opinions of the society.
