In past decade, the use of ICT in schools increased exponentially. However, ICT integration in teaching is still utilized at a low level. While many ICT professional development programs for teachers focus mainly on developing teachers' technical competency, the effect of their attitude, perception and emotion towards ICT integration is usually neglected. In this book, a social approach to professional development of ICT integration is argued to be important to improve ICT integration. A research was conducted to look at issues of ICT integration from the teachers' perspective and to explore the impact of peer support in enhancing ICT professional development. Based on the research findings, this book draws the focus on developing teachers' intrinsic motivation towards ICT integration. Peer support is found to be an enabler of intrinsic motivation. A sustainable peer support enhanced professional development model is thus developed. This book should help shed some light on developing ICT professional development programs for teachers and should be especially useful to teachers, professional developers and school leaders who want to lift ICT integration to a higher level.

Laboratory resources play a vital role in the teaching-learning process of science subjects. In Tanzanian public secondary schools, there is inequality in the provision of these resources such that the community secondary schools have very few laboratory resources, however, these schools are required to sit for the same national examination as more privileged schools, with better resources. This study focused on exploring teachers’ experiences of teaching science subjects with limited laboratory resources in community secondary schools in Lindi region in Tanzania. The shortage of Laboratory resources limits teachers to teach according to their belief, that for effective teaching and learning science, students should be involved in hands-on activities. The shortage of these resources forces teachers to conduct science experiments in order of priority; they organized experiments for those classes that were preparing for national examinations. It was recommended that in teaching and learning science with limited resources, teachers should be innovative and committed so as to realize meaningful learning. Furthermore, teachers’ professional learning is essential for them to gain skills

Information and Communication Technologies provide greater opportunity for students and teachers to enhance learning and teaching. Furthermore, the use of ICTs in education makes teaching learning more constructive. Hence, ICT literacy i.e., knowledge and skills on computer and other innovative technologies can foster better attainment in learning of children. Parental involvement (Education and Occupation of Parents) in child’s ICT literacy positively affects children’s academic performance and is a more powerful force for academic success than other variables such as social class, family size. This book is based on the concept that whether parental education & occupation is having any bearing upon ICT literacy of students. Some research studies reveal the impact as positive and others reveal as no impact, even both variables are not correlated. The authors of this book tried to present the findings in a very exploratory way. Hope, this book will cater the requirements of researchers, and other academia.

The author explores the influence of a professional development program on academics’ implementation of active learning in large science courses. Through a qualitative methodology and by employing the transformative learning theory, the author evaluates the influence of science instructors’ engagement in dialogue and critical self-reflection on their teaching approaches and practices. Critical reflection is facilitated through watching of teaching videotapes followed by academics’ engagement in dialogue about teaching. Findings suggest that providing continuous pedagogical support by fostering engagement in critical self-reflection and dialogue, can lead to transformative learning about teaching. More specifically, participation in this type of professional development leads to the transformation of teaching practices, while teaching approaches remain unchanged. While some obstacles to the transformation of teaching approaches are identified, major outcomes indicate that meaningful professional development can go far beyond learning how to use new teaching strategies and it demonstrates the important role of faculty engagement in critical reflection and dialogue on teaching.

Drawn from the Science Fiction Research Association conference held in Lawrence, Kansas, in 2008, the essays in this volume address intersections among the reading, writing, and teaching of science fiction. Part 1 studies the teaching of SF, placing analytical and pedagogical research next to each other to reveal how SF can be both an object of study as well as a teaching tool for other disciplines. Part 2 examines SF as a genre of mediation between the sciences and the humanities, using close readings and analyses of the literary-scientific nexus. Part 3 examines SF in the media, using specific television programs, graphic novels, and films as examples of how SF successfully transcends the medium of transmission. Finally, Part 4 features close readings of SF texts by women, including Joanna Russ, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Octavia E. Butler.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,5, Technical University of Ilmenau (Institut für Wirtschaftswissenschaften), 43 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the relevance of Information and CommunicationTechnologies (ICT) for economic growth in developing economies. By reviewing thecontributions from the neoclassical and endogenous growth theory and empiricevidences for the link between ICT and economic growth, the paper clearly concludesthat ICTs facilitate economic growth, principally by providing incentives for capitaldeepening and increasing productivity through rapid technological progress. However, the impact on growth is more extensive from the long-term ICT use and networking that though requires appropriate ICT investment and complementary efforts in order that spillovers and productivity improvements are triggered and exploited totally. This paper derives the key determinants and interacting factors that, in the corresponding correct synergic combination, promote ICT's impact on growth-generating processes. For a variety of reasons, the states of these factors in developing countries provide a less ICT favourable environment for taking advantage from ICTs. These economies exhibit a lower stock of human capacities and per capita capital to trigger the productivity benefits from the ICT use. Therefore, the level of effort is higher than in the developed world to receive...

The use of computers has been increasing worldwide for teaching of science in secondary schools. Also in Pakistan, computers are now available in most of the private schools and their use is steadily increasing for teaching and learning. Government also intends to equip public secondary schools with computer labs. Various research studies suggest that appropriate and effective use of computers enhances and adds value to students’ learning in science education. However, the existing use of computers in schools in Pakistan appears not to be up to the level of its potential effectiveness, consequently having limited impact on students’ learning. Teachers are central to the successful use of computer resources in science teaching as the ways of using computers depends on how well teachers understand its use. Therefore, exploring their perceptions and practices of integrating computers into teaching of science would help understand the existing situation of computers uses in schools so that decisions about the future can be made.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, University of Dar es Salaam (College of Engineering & Technolgy), course: Master of Engineering Management, language: English, abstract: The existence of national ICT policy would indicate demand for indicators; however, no sufficient information on indicators used in the national policy is available yet. This poses the challenge in monitoring and evaluation of ICT Projects and not only that, but it is also difficult to measure the status quo of ICT development and digital divide among societies. This dissertation was both exploratory and descriptive in nature; therefore, it utilized both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. A survey conducted used purposive sampling with informants being stakeholders with basic IT knowledge and IT personnel. Data was collected through a survey of 45 organizations in both techniques of face-to-face and online, with a total of 80 respondents. Data collected examined the level of importance or applicability of 90 ICT indicators in their respective 10 sector parameter.Findings indicated that, 50 indicators (55%) out of 90 are significant and confirmed to be highly correlated with new 6 ICT categories (sector parameters) out 10 (60%) which were proposed in the literature review. After a decade, internet now reaches the Asian region as well as African countries intensively while USA, Canada and Europe are focusing newer inventions. Within the Asian region it exists considerably another technological gap among countries. The countries with higher income such as Japan, Singapore, South Korea has succeeded in implementing ICT in all social and economic areas. The rest of the countries, including China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, are far behind in information technology. Nevertheless, it´s necessary for all nations, weather developed or developing, to keep on nurturing ICT development to be a part of connected world. The question is how a nation can successfully adopt ICT and benefit from all advantages at best. Unfortunately, there is no common guideline for all countries. Without identifying specific factors of each country and a lot of effort made by government, no country can achieve high ICT performance in the long run. The purpose of this paper is three-fold:To identify the characteristics and political options of a country, that would affect the success of ist ICT adoption. To identify clusters of nations upon the international ICT indices and GNI per capita To provide an overall guideline that incorporates these nations toward developing higher ICT indices. This paper shows income level and social background can play very important roles in country´s ICT development.

Stacia E. Zabusky Launching Europe. An Ethnography of European Cooperation in Space Science

In this first ethnographic study of the European Space Agency, Stacia Zabusky explores the complex processes involved in cooperation on space science missions in the contemporary context of European integration. Zabusky argues that the practice of cooperation does not depend on a homogenizing of interests in a bland unity. Instead, it consists of ongoing negotiation of and conflict over often irreconcilable differences. In this case, those differences are put into play by both technical and political divisions of labor (in particular, those of big science and of European integration). Zabusky shows how participants on space science missions make use of these differences, particularly those manifest in identities of work and of nationality, as they struggle together not only to produce space satellites but also to create European integration. She argues that the dialectical processes of production include and depend on conflict and contradiction to maintain energy and excitement and thus to be successful. Participants in these processes are not, however, working only to produce tangible success. In her epilogue, Zabusky argues that European space science missions can be interpreted as sacred journeys undertaken collectively, and that these journeys are part of a fundamental cultural project of modernity: the legitimation of and aspiration for purity. She suggests, finally, that this project characterizes not only the institution of technoscience but those of bureaucracy and na...

Information and communication technology (ICT) is seen as great opportunity for higher education institutions, and considerable efforts and resources are invested worldwide in promoting its use. As with other institutions in the world, African higher education institutions have invested considerable resources in ICT development. However, it has been reported repeatedly that the continent experiences problems with ICT development. A review of the literature has identified internal and external factors that limit ICT development as well as problems associated with bringing technology into local practices. Specifically, technology is often purchased, and then staff members are retrained in order to use it. This assumes the ‘neutrality’ of technology, hiding that it is the product of specific ideologies and part of particular global economic patterns. The study findings confirm the enormous benefits that African higher education institutions can gain from technology. The benefits that were identified included more efficient communication, teaching, and research. However, it was feared that costs and possible cultural impact would arise as negative aspects of technology adoption.

Scholarly Research Paper from the year 2010 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, grade: -, University of Twente , course: Education science, language: English, abstract: This article is focused on unveiling the concept of TPACK in relation to teaching and learning in science and mathematics as well as the meaning of TPACK for pre-service science and mathematics teachers training. In describing this, different literatures were consulted on the meaning of TPACK, its origin and the way it can be integrated in pre-service science and mathematics teacher preparation. It was noted from literature that TPACK is the core of good teaching with technology, and that it's important for teachers to have an understanding of TPACK. Studies further show that the way pre-service teachers are taught to integrate technology, pedagogy and content is the same way they can implement the approach in their own teaching. In addition, studies argue for pre-service teachers to learn on how technology can help to enhance students learning in science and mathematics rather than learning how to teach technology. Different frameworks have been proposed on how to shift from teaching technology to using technology to enhance learning. For example some studies provide the curricular plans for developing pre-service teachers' competencies of integrating technology pedagogy and content. To enhance pre-service teachers' competency in technology integrations, some studies hav...

This study reports on recent doctoral research focused on six academic staff working in early blended learning environments in campus-based contexts at a large Australian university. The case-based research reports on how information and communications technology (ICT) was used by each of these staff, all early adopters of new technologies, to enhance their face-to-face teaching, and how this use contributed to an understanding of blended learning in higher education. Across the cases, seven dimensions of blended learning environments were identified - a significant finding of this study. Overall, the study enhances understanding of the nature, purpose and scope of early blended learning approaches in a university setting, and highlights the importance of academics' use of resource-based learning to create blended learning environments across a range of courses. The study also establishes reasons why these teachers embraced the use of ICT in their on-campus teaching, and provides insights into how each perceived their teaching role.

They represent a promising way to lead developing countries on a path of more rapid development. But ICT for Development (ICT4D) is not only an issue of the development society. For many multinational operating software companies developing continents like Africa with a population of almost half a billion represent a huge, still untapped market. The German software company SAP AG for example is engaged in the African Drive Project (ADP). ADP is improving the South African education system by means of ICTs. SAP sees its engagement as an investment in future business areas and emerging markets in the developing world. But the corporate engagement of these big international players does not have to contradict the general aims and goals of the development society. On the contrary, the development assistance sees a crucial role in engaging in public private partnerships (PPP). The OECD notes that PPPs have become a general trend throughout the global economy.
