Syskova Nadezda Media use and identity construction among Russian immigrants in Canada

The book explores the role of media use (in both Russian and English) in the process of integration of middle-aged highly educated Russian immigrants in Canada. The study combined a cross-cultural psychology model of acculturation strategies (Berry, 1997) with a media type consumers' model (Adoni et al., 2006) to reveal the role of media consumption in the process of identity construction. The results of the study demonstrate that consumption of media is one of the factors that might affect the success of integration. However, other factors also need to be taken into account.

The financial crisis in 2008 has gone but its affection still left the EU a disaster behind for example: Greece with highest record government debt, Spain and Portugal with the alarm rate of unemployment and Italy with a red inflation. The German economy is however a good exception. Its industrialization has well developed and brought a positive GDP and a number of job to the labour market. This number of job has grown rapidly that created its own excess labour demand situation. It is now addressed as an serious issue, which will escalate in the next decade. Germany needs urgent additional manpower. Labour immigration is one of their best option. But lets not the immigration history repeating, like the Turkish labour immigrants in the BDR 1960s incidence or the mistreated Vietnamese guest workers in the GDR 1980s. A well-organized integration plan is also what it needs. Therefore I suggest the suitable approaches from the macro and micro aspects such as: combine the international economic relations (labour as main factor) with regional economic long term development (effective productivity as main purpose). Managing the cross culture issue is also very important: respecting each nation and recognizing each identity. The main purpose of this book is to prove that the labour immigration is the right solution for Germany and the right approaches.

Recent past events in France such as the riots in the suburbs or the rise of the extreme-right, have highlighted the uneasiness in relations between immigrants and local. The integration of immigrants as well as the preservation of a french "patrimoine" show the duality and the complexity of the debate about immigration. France singular political system based on the concept of equality, unity of the people and laicity, just to quote some features, is to be challenged and the question to be asked is wether or not the difficulties encountered in the integration of immigrants in France is link to this republican model? The comparison with its "opposite" model the multicultural model will give some answers to the question.

In Germany a male breadwinner model is found. Men's activity rate is much higher than the one of women. Reservations have to be made when speaking about a female part-time carer. The percentage of women working part-time is less than the half of women working full-time and women doing housework are even more than women working part-time. There is also some conflict towards the Dutch dual breadwinner/ dual carer model. The rate of women working part-time is in fact the highest in the Netherlands and also the percentage of men working part-time is higher than for Germany or even Finland, still there is no equal participation in the labour market and therefore no dual breadwinner model, at most a tendency towards. Lastly, Finland's women are by far most integrated into the labour market when speaking of full-time employment, but speaking of full and equal integration of both sexes and therefore a dual breadwinner model is exaggerated. As regards attitudes, the total explained variance and homogeneity of factor gives some indication that there is convergence of attitudes which seems to increase when more "liberal" countries, younger respond...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: First Class, University of Hull, language: English, abstract: The years since the early 1970s are unprecedented in terms of the volatility in the prices of commodities, currencies, real estate and stocks, and the frequency and severity of financial crises (Kindleberger and Aliber). Many authors have already studied about reasons of the origin of financial crises and their impact on the economy concerned, since financial crises, in particular global ones and especially the current one affect all economic factors significantly. The economic growth slows down or even turns into a recession due to decreasing investments, affected by a significantly lower liquidity of companies and investors. All these factors also affect the GDP and the labour market of the economy concerned, in this case Germany, which economy has turned into a recession in February 2009. The subject of this paper has been chosen due to the present global relevance of the impact of a financial crisis on the labour market. The topic in particular has been chosen due to the fact that it is of worldwide relevance since the outbreak of the crisis analysed occurred on an unexpected scale, more precisely the worst of its kind since the Great Depression in the 1930s.The focus of this paper lies on the analysis of the current crisis in terms of the impact on the German labour market.

Comprehensive market performance is better understood by studying the extent of spatial market integration which in turn is affected by communication factors like telephony growth and extension services within the marketing system. Extension services are important in influencing levels of production and dissemination of trade information of both the inputs to and output from the enterprise. Unfortunately very little was known about how rice price transmission takes place. Given the importance of rice (as a food security crop & source of income) to the rural poor, many organizations have promoted it among rural farmers for improving their welfare, it was imperative that its price movements is studied to inform policy makers & implementers on the status of its spatial market integration. Taichang Chen Transformations and Challenges of China.s Urban Labour Market

China has experienced dramatic changes since its economic reform programme in 1978, and it is in the process of creating a functioning urban labour market that rewards workers on the basis of human capital. A 2002 nationally representative household survey is used to investigate how far a competitive urban labour market China has been created. We find evidence of both segmentation and competition between urban residents and migrants which is consistent with previous studies. In addition, there is evidence that segmentation exists across sectors for urban residents, with those currently working in government agencies and institutions being the highest-paid tier, followed by state-owned enterprises, private-invested enterprises, those in urban collective enterprises and self-employment are considered as the lowest-paid tier. Although we do not find evidence of segmentation among migrants, our data suggest that migrants are blocked from getting jobs in the 'upper-tier' for urban residents, and thus are forced to engage in self-employment. Therefore, the urban labour market is segmented into multi-tier and is still in a transition stage.

Elena Fabrizi Work history patterns for young workers at entry in the labour market

The aim of this work is to describe the Italian labour market at the entrance level. The focus is on the individual work history patterns for young people in the private sector. Work histories are investigated through duration models. We wonder whether there can be groups in the labour market, with specific characteristics, who do not benefit from the same advantages guaranteed to the others. This is done through looking at different aspects of the careers, specifically both substantial and contractual aspects. Substantial aspects of the work history patterns are defined independently from the typology of work arrangement. This measurement of stability in the labour market is based on the cumulative time actually worked and the number of transitions (number of job to job changes) that were necessary to an individual in order to work continuously. We further profile different work history patterns looking at the contractual aspects. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of flexibility for a group of employees involved in non-standard work arrangements, comparing their performance with their counterparts with standard labour contracts.

Lazreg Nesrine Post-war Britain and the Double Challenge

Taking a probing look at the British political and public scenes from 1945 up to 2000, one may notice the recurrent image of Britain facing a double threat: the presence of black immigrants and later black British people on the one hand, and Britain's participation in the European integration project on the other. Accordingly, this book sheds lights on the shared images, discourses and policies of the threat that stigmatized the black immigrants and later black British people as the 'enemies within' jeopardizing Britain's national identity while casting the schemes for European integration as the 'enemies without' endangering its national sovereignty. The book goes beyond tracing similarities to scrutinize the rationales of such complex relations between Britain, its black immigrants, and its European neighbours; a scrutiny that explores the roles of the other in the nation-making processes and delves into the realities of changes brought about by post-war period. This work invites its readers to take a more holistic approach in addressing the intricate questions of immigration, multiculturalism, national identity, and European integration in relation to Britain.

The situation at the market for Russian art is surprising, however it was completely different merely a decade ago. Unfortunately, there is almost no academic literature that could shed some light on this subject in the history of Russian art. This book will help to answer such questions as "Who sells Russian art at the Western art market?", "Who buys the Russian art?", and "What influences the price growth?".

Theresa del Tufo, George Banez Behind The Golden Door. The Resilience of Today.s Immigrants

How do immigrants navigate the stormy waters of the American Society? What qualities or traits can they model and adopt to enable them to achieve their version of the American Dream? Set against the turmoil (i.e., rampant and open racism, sexism and xenophobia) that is plaguing today’s society, Behind the Golden Door chronicles the real-life struggles and triumphs of immigrants to this country. It explores the conflicting beliefs and values of the American National Character and the potential reasons for this confusing tension between what Americans say and think and how they behave. The book profiles the collective voices of immigrants—how they were able to face and overcome the challenges of life in America, how they shaped their version of the good life and how they flourished, despite the deceiving and conflicting messages of a society that values some but not all of its people. The insights and wisdom of ordinary immigrants offer powerful guidelines for action for others who are going through a similar experience. The authors examined and analyzed their diverse stories and personal legends, then sifted through their inspiring narratives to find the golden nuggets that accounted for their success. They then developed a replicable framework that could be adopted by any immigrant attempting to survive the cleavages of race, religion, gender, economic and political power in America.

Francis Adu-Febiri, Everett Ofori Succeeding from the Margins of Canadian Society. A Strategic Resource for New Immigrants, Refugees and International Students

It is possible to overcome barriers to minority success in Canada. The stance of this book is that new immigrants, refugees and international students do not have to settle for underachievement despite the cultural and structural disadvantages they face in Canada. The fact is, the unequal social structure of Canada has some cracks, and many minorities have used strategic resources to open up these cracks and achieved tremendous upward social mobility in Canadian society from the margins. These documented minority successes in Canada in the face of systemic marginalization provide lessons and hope for new immigrants, refugees and international students. The economic, political, social and cultural problems that minorities encounter in Canadian institutions, organizations, communities and from individuals overwhelm and break many of them. However, some minorities break records in the face of the frustrations they encounter. What accounts for the success of the latter group of immigrants, refugees and international students in Canada? Individual efforts and personal ambitions are not enough to explain these success stories. This book highlights strategies and support systems that facilitate minority strategic connections with Canadian mainstream institutions, organizations and individuals to win from the margins of society.Although the book does not get into the theories of inequality, equity and diversity, it does acknowledge the structural and cultural barriers to minority succ...

The purpose of this study was to examine the acculturation strategies among the Bangladeshi immigrants in Malmo and London, difference preferences across generations and between the two cities, and how acculturation preferences play out different socio-cultural domains. The sample comprised 22 immigrants (11 from London and 11 from Malmo). Data were obtained using questioners. The results were found on the basis of Berry's (1997) four fold acculturation model and on the basis of a new classification developed by Lathi, Liebkind, Horenczyk and Schmitz (2002). Responses of the Questioners revealed that integration was the most preferred strategy when using Barry's original model both in Malmo and London. However, when integration was sub-classified according to their second preference using Lathi et al. typology, the tendency towards integration became pronounced in Malmo. This tendency became more pronounced when one examined generational aspect using five socio-cultural domains. Acculturation preference and integration strategies were more homogeneous in Malmo, also when the generation dimension was taken into account than London.

Laura Barbieri The Italian labour market

The starting point of this work is the remark that recent decades have been characterized by a rising complexity in the economic and political context both at the national and international level. This is due both to the European economic and monetary integration process and to the regional decentralisation process. With the aim of providing a useful tool of analysis for the decision-maker, a 'global' regional model for the Italian labour market has been constructed on the basis of annual data from ISTAT-SVIMEZ over the 1970-2003 period. This model could be viewed as an extension to a multi-regional framework of the previous one-region model developed by Baussola (2007). The model shows good performance not only in representing regional labour market specificities, but also in reproducing national variable values. It is also robust and effective in a time-series context.

The exploration of rural agricultural labour households believes significance, as they represent a vulnerable section of the rural population, whose percentage has increased drastically in almost all the states in India. An important trend in large number of theoretical and empirical studies on the functioning of rural labour markets has been appeared to explain the patterns of income, employment, extent of earning and indebtedness prevalent among these households. This book analyzes the trend in wages, inter-district and intra-district differences in wage rate and gender differences among the rural agricultural labour households in rural Orissa with a view to understand their livelihood pattern. The book also analyzes pattern of employment, income, extent of indebtedness and earning prevalent among rural landless labourers and agricultural households in rural Orissa. Further, the book discusses the prevailing contractual arrangement of the rural labour market. This book would be very useful for students, academicians, researchers, activists and policy makers for understanding the dynamics of rural labour market, wage determination, livelihood pattern and development.

Samuel Skipper The Politics of Immigration. Is Germany moving towards a Multicultural Society.

The topic of immigration is never simple. Questions such as 'who belongs to society?' and 'how do you define national identity?', or 'what values are needed to maintain a coexisting society?' are extremely difficult to answer. Global migration introduces unprecedented challenges for conceptualising the integration of immigrants. On a European scale, Germany can be said to represent the first destination for immigrants since its unification in 1989. On a global level, Germany is the second largest immigrant receiving country after the United States. Nevertheless, only recently has Germany recognised and admitted that it is an ethnically and culturally diverse society. Before the 1998 elections, successive governments have always stuck to the maxim that Germany is 'not a country of immigration'.The infamous phrase came under increased pressure with the electoral victory of the Red-Green coalition in 1998. New laws regarding immigration, integration and citizenship were on the agenda with the aim of replacing the traditional ethnocultural model of German nationhood with a more liberal and modern model by moving away from the concepts of Volk and ius sanguinis. The conservative CDU, however, accused the Schroder government of trying to jeopardize German cultural identity, causing a fierce debate known as the Leitkultur (Guiding culture) debate. On the one side of this debate there were the conservative CDU politicians who viewed Germany in ethno-nat...

The West has always been a resource for the Finns. Scholars, artists and other professionals have sought contacts from Europe throughout the centuries. The Finnish experience in Western Europe and the New World is a story of migrant laborers, expatriates and specialists working abroad. But you don't have to be born in Finland to be a Finn. The experiences of second-generation Finnish immigrants and their descendants open up new possibilities for understanding the relationship between Finland and the West. The Finnish passage westward has not always crossed national borders. Karelian evacuees headed west, as did young people from the Finnish countryside when opportunities to make a living in agriculture and forestry diminished in the post-war era. The legacy of these migrants is still visible in the suburbs of Finnish cities today. This book is a joint effort of the Department of Ethnology and the Department of History at the University of Helsinki. It was written by Ph. Thorsten Prill Global Mission on our Doorstep

Document from the year 2017 in the subject Theology - Practical Theology, , language: English, abstract: In the face of globalisation, one of the challenges for Christians ministering to asylum seekers and refugees in the United Kingdom is the question of integrating Christian asylum seekers and refugees into the Christian community. British churches and para-church organisations that are involved in refugee ministry have to decide whether they want to support the formation of independent refugee churches or the integration of refugees and asylum seekers into local indigenous churches. This thesis examines these options from a missiological perspective. Two social research projects form the heart of this study. One compares the life and ministry of two mature minority ethnic churches, the other investigates the integration process at a British church that has been involved in refugee ministry for almost a decade.Contrary to the widespread view that the establishment of homogeneous churches is crucial for the mission of the church in postmodern British society, the findings of this research suggest that the integration of asylum seekers and refugees into indigenous British churches is the better option. They further demonstrate that it is not the mono-ethnic refugee church but the multi-ethnic church which makes the greater contribution to the integration of Christian asylum seekers and refugees and to the missio Dei in Britain. In a multi-ethnic church, asylum seekers and ref...

Robert Corfe Land of the Olympians

This is a penetrating study of many aspects of life, thought, and everyday existence in Scandinavia, as experienced through the author’s 9-year residence in the enlightened far north in the 1960s. Robert Corfe is primarily known as a thought-provoking writer of books published in the 21st century, but this work comprises a selection of his articles published in the Finnish press, popular magazines, and learned journals in the 1960s. The collected articles are put into context for a contemporary readership by a lively introductory chapter entitled, Seeing The Future Through The Past, which describes how Scandinavia was 50 years in advance of Britain in terms of political thinking and social development. And now Britain has caught up and shares in the benefits and also the dis-benefits of a modernised technological society. Of considerable interest are the articles on British society and its problems, as viewed through the eyes of a British resident acclimatised to the cultural environment of Finnish life. The articles reflect clearly the development of the author’s political ideas on the need for a classless society in more effectively contributing to communal prosperity and internal harmony. The Scandinavians’ enviable policy of neutrality and disengagement from the conflicts of the great power blocs in achieving national security is highlighted as contributing to the happiness of their people. In view of an impending new Cold War between Russia and the West, the arguments de...

Kassaye Tekola Moges Immigrants as Risk Group in the Host Country

HIV/AIDS has challenged humans perhaps more than any other pandemic in recent history. In the era of globalization and increased movement of people crossing borders, immigrants especially from HIV prone countries to the western world have been singled out as one of the 'risk groups' by host nations. In countries like Sweden, where multicultural society is in the making, HIV prevention programs have targeted immigrants more than others. However, HIV infections are still on the increase and HIV prevention strategies and methods have been questioned. This book explores the views of HIV prevention workers drawn from immigrants themselves and closely examines explanations from structural to specific contextual factors for the challenges of HIV prevention in multicultural neighborhoods of Gothenburg city in Sweden. The study surfaces out new dimensions that have not been sufficiently addressed by concerned bodies in HIV prevention efforts. The analysis from this study would help policy makers, professionals, HIV practitioners and ordinary people especially in the western world, where immigrants are significant proportion of society.

Marco Mercuri Beyond the Self-Entrepreneurial Myth. Oil Palm Smallholders in Sanggau, West Kalimantan

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 8.5, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (Anthropology and Development Studies), course: M.Sc. in Development Studies, language: English, abstract: The main theoretical contribution of this research can be found in the attempt of connecting - probably for the first time - structural violence with the exploitation of workers embedded into the global market through a specific commodity-chain. Even though any definition of structural violence leaves open the possibility of applying it to the impairment caused by economic structures, its implementation in an analysis of relations of production in order to study the labour exploitation within a specific industry is, certainly, a pioneering effort. In spite of a widespread awareness about exploitation of the agrarian working class in the Global South, the rhetoric about smallholders' inclusion into the global market tends to conceal their exposure to exploitation behind the miraculous benefits of the self-entrepreneurial model. Nowadays - in the era of global capitalism - there exist new forms of surplus extraction beside the traditional wage-labour power exchange. Currently, the capital does not necessarily exert control over production throughout the direct ownership of every means of production. It can even leave the ownership of the land in the hand of smallholders as long as the appropriation of surplus v...

Sabine Mercer The Role of Photography and Cinema in the Rise of Mass Consumer Culture in the Early Twentieth Century

Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Communications - Media History, grade: High Distinction, James Cook University (James Cook University), course: History of Communication, language: English, abstract: The Industrial Revolution was characterized by two intrinsically linked social phenomena. Firstly, a social shift in the transformation of a traditionally agricultural society into an industrial and increasingly urban mass society; secondly, a technological shift resulting in the virtual explosion of the mass production of consumer goods. Towards the end of the nineteenth century these two events, large-scale changes in social structure and mass production, became the basis for the rise of consumer capitalism. This newly generated consumer market was made possible by a steady increase in mass production, characterized by large numbers of diversified goods, often with a built-in obsolescence, which stimulated the process of ongoing consumption. The need for a frequent replacement of commodities, in combination with the striving of urbanised individuals to fill the gaping void within his or her existence that resulted from the demotion of labour productivity in the framework of modern society, gave rise to consumer culture.

Raphael Israeli Retreating from the Mirage of Multi-Culturalism. The Cases of Holland, Britain, and Israel

Government strategies for immigration in the Western world are changing. This follows decades in which the West enthusiastically embraced a policy of multiculturalism, hoping to integrate the critical mass of Muslim immigrants arriving in Europe. Some have come in search of economic opportunity; others are legitimate political refugees fleeing tyranny, oppression, and persecution. Multiculturalism, however, became an ideology so deeply and wholly adopted by certain Western governments, as to trigger processes of separatism instead of integration, while efforts to accord citizenship and facilitate assimilation have instead created undercurrents of revivalist Islam. The resulting policy has deteriorated into anger and frustration, leading some new immigrants to support terrorism against their host countries, and to participate in planning and initiating acts of violence in Britain, Spain, France, Germany, and Belgium. In view of this, some host countries have begun to rethink the benefits of multi-culturalism, adjusting to a new policy seeking the integration of Muslim minorities, not through recognizing and cultivating their separate identities, but through imposing the dominating culture of the adopted country. Case studies include Holland, Britain, and Israel.Born in Fes, Morocco, Raphael Israeli currently teaches Islamic, Chinese, and Middle Eastern history at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Chandra Thapa Integration of Emerging Equity Markets. A Systematic Review

Emerging Markets exhibit time varying integration with the developed markets with changes not only observed in the degree of expected returns and equity premium but the risk exposures and their sensitivities to the exposures also changes over time. The degree of variation observed in the level of integration in one particular market may be different from others leading to wide cross sectional differences expected returns, equity premium and risk exposures. The academic work in the context of emerging markets could have important implications not only for asset pricing mechanism and capital allocation decision by foreign investors but also for the domestic policymakers who are endeavouring to explore best policy prescription to integrate their economy with that of global market place for reaping the benefits of economic and financial globalization.

Jiri Melich The Politics Multiculturalism or Pragmatic Integration Policy.

In many Western countries, multicultural coexistence and conflict are a fact of life, regardless whether they have 'multiculturalism policies' (MCPs) in place or not. The existence, implementation, and success of such policies are contingent on several factors, including historical, demographic, and social ones, as well as political and economic strategies. Important is a tradition of systematic recognition (or non-recognition) of diverse character of a country's population and its vision of emancipation and integration of ethnic minority groups. The goal of integration of diverse minorities into the society is apparently contradictory and, to a large degree, a practice of multiculturalism goes against genuine inter-cultural integration. This leads to interrelated questions: How much of cultural diversity in a democratic country can be optimally managed, if at all? Which MCPs have a potential to contribute to peaceful and harmonious society and, if societies accept and promote cultural diversity, who and under which conditions will benefit from it? This study explores the many-faceted multiculturalism theme, looking at the cases of Canada and Western Europe.

Resources must be put aside and injected into productive enterprises to create more wealth. Once an entrepreneur has set up his businesses, human resource should be well mobilised and well utilised to get the best out of it. Babatunde Kazeem Impact of Stock Market Performance Indices on Economic Growth

The controversy on the impact of stock market performance and economic growth and development is empirically evaluated in this study, using Nigerian data. This effort is spurred by the raging debate on the relevance of stock market in promoting economic growth. Using the Ordinary Least Square regression method, the empirical evidence suggest that stock market size and turnover ratio promote economic growth, while stock market liquidity hurts economic growth. Although our result suggests that stock mark performance indices promote economic growth and development, this evidence should be viewed with some caution. The measure of stock market performance used in this study may not be adequate. Although the market capitalization ratio (market capitalization/GDP), value of transactions traded ratio (value of transaction traded/GDP), and turnover ratio (value of transaction traded/market capitalization) as proxies of stock market performance has been popular in literature, it clearly does not include other indicators of stock market development like international integration, market concentration, regulatory and institutional indicators and stock market volatility.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, Berlin School of Economics and Law (IMB), language: English, abstract: This paper investigates Chinese automotive companies' internationalisation activities into the European market. They are still short on experience and young in history. Since the Chinese economy has only gradually liberalised after 1978, the industry has been highly influenced by joint venture activities with foreign automobile companies in China.12 years ago, Chinese automotive companies started to internationalise. Dunning's eclectic paradigm is utilized as academic foundation and related motives and entry modes are aligned to current Chinese activities. In early attempts to enter Europe there was a predominant resource-seeking motive, while later market-seeking reasons became more obvious and have dominated the activities since. So far, ownership-specific advantages do not play a major role in terms of valuable intangible assets like patents, whereas location specific determinants are significant, especially in terms of governmental impact. Additional home market advantages in labour endowment, resources, legal environment and strong finan- cial resources give Chinese automakers an edge and prepare them to further internationalise. However, regarding all OLI forces, there are still no outweighing advantages over European competitors. The interviewed experts do not expect a noticeable ma...

International migration is affected by the increasing interdependence among countries caused by economic liberalization, income disparity among nations, accessible means of transportation, and growing demographic difference between developed and developing countries, geo-political factors. The focus of the book is immigrants’ distribution between the municipalities in Norway. This process depends on many factors, such as high wage level in some region, good chances to get a job, friends, relatives or immigrants from the same country, who live in the respective place. People might also tend to live in big cities due to higher amount of works, apartments, schools, etc. available. The purpose of the work is to examine the dependence of immigrants’ location on unemployment rate; wage premium level in the municipalities in Norway; size of labor market and the share of immigrants, who arrived in the region some time ago; the attraction of big cities in Norway. There were considered six model specifications with different number of explanatory variables and two estimation approaches: ordinary least squares method and censored regression approach.

“For the first time, the government tries to find out, not what nations but what races are pouring into America, and It reaches some conclusions that will make the average man stare.” —from “The races that go into the American melting pot,” New York Times, May 21, 1911In the early 1900s, US immigration changed dramatically. Not only did the annual immigration levels soar to over one million a year, resulting in an immigrant population of 10 million, but the origin of immigrants was changing greatly as well. In the 1880s, 87 percent of the immigrants came from northern and western Europe, while by the early 1900s, 81 percent came from southern and eastern Europe. From 1899 on, immigrants were no longer classified by country of birth, but according to race or people. This was due to the many new immigrants, from the Austro-Hungarian or Russian empires, who could not easily be distinguished by country of birth. In 1907, the US IMMIGRATION COMMISSION (a.k.a. the Dillingham Commission), a joint House and Senate commission, was formed to study these changes in immigration. The commission’s chairman, the Republican Senator William P. Dillingham (1843–1923) and a Progressive reformer, was a vocal advocate of restriction of immigration. As part of its 41-volume report on immigration, the commission released the Dictionary of Races and Peoples in 1911. It was written by the commission’s senior researcher Daniel Folkmar with his wife Elnora, and became a crucial source of anthropologica...

Verter Nahanga The Impact of Migration on the Nigeria Labour Market

The major objective of the study was to determine the impact of migration on the Nigeria labour market. In a country where jobs opportunities are lacking, unattractiveness of agricultural sector of the economy, industrialization is yet to take its full course, high level of institutional corruption and human rights abuses, religious and ethic conflicts, high population growth, wide gap of inequality, majority of the population is living below poverty line etc. Both Internal and International migration are necessary as they help in reducing the pressure on the Nigeria labour market, but movement of highly skilled workers in large numbers have resulted in a 'brain drain' in the country. While the remittances help to redistribute resources and alleviate poverty within the regions. Skills and experienced acquired from the receiving areas can be transferred home either in temporally basis or permanently when migrants visit or return home. These put together will enhanced the socio-economic development and reduce its imbalances in the country.

Section 2 gives an overview of the current electricity market design and Section 3 integrates the balancing market in the framework and presents the economical and technical conditions, including the relevant design variables. Section 4 describes the benefits from cross-border coordination in reserve markets and introduces possible integration models. Within Section 5, model requirements are formulated and one suitable model is selected. Section 6 presents the selected methodology and Section 7 gives the obtained case study. Section 8 evaluates the model and discusses the proposed expansion involving the flow-based approach. Lastly, Section 9 concludes and gives further research prospects.European electricity markets have changed profoundly in the last decades. In national markets increased deregulation and privatization have accompanied the decoupling of transmission, distribution and generation activities. Simultaneously, markets in Europe are becoming more interconnected and harmonized. Until now, the focus was primarily set on the harmonization and integration of spot and forward markets. Nonetheless, the short-term regulation of flexible short-term operating reserves within the balancing market is gaining attention in academia and industry, especially due to the increased ...

Florian Schleicher Consumption patterns and lifeworlds. using the example of convenience food

This paper offers remarkable insights into the German food market and its consumers. A solid theoretical foundation is laid by classical as well as modern authors. The works of these authors form the basis for the theoretical analysis on a social determination of taste. In the following, the field of sociology of consumption is taken into account and analysed. In the practical part, consumers are researched using lifeworlds as a tool of categorization of German households. In the market research economy, lifeworlds are widely perceived as an appropriate tool for researching present and future market developments. The analysed empirical data on purchasing behaviour was provided by the market research study Typology of Desires 2010. Results in the direction of a social determination of taste offer valuable perceptions for theorists and practitioners alike.
