This was then followed by a series of methods that started with Audiolingualism, developed during and after world war two. Following these methods, several methods, including audio-visual method, cognitive code, and a cluster of new methods that emerged in the 1970s such as the silent way, suggestopedia, Total Physical Response, Communicative language teaching and Task-based learning were introduced.

Positioning English for Specific Purposes in an English Language Teaching Context

With the unrelenting spread of globalization, the English language has been firmly established as the Lingua Franca. Now more than ever, the importance of learning English is paramount within nearly all professional and educational sectors. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has long been accepted as an effective method for teaching English as a foreign language. In recent years, it has experienced an increasing presence in secondary and tertiary education across the globe. This is predominantly due to its learner-centered approach that focuses on developing linguistic competence in the student’s specific discipline, may that be academics, business or tourism, for example. Positioning English for Specific Purposes in an English Language Teaching Context attempts to present and define the relevance and scope of ESP within English Language teaching. From mobile phones as educational tools to the language needs of medical students, the contributors to this volume examine and propose different epistemological and methodological aspects of ESP teaching. Its unique approach to ESP marks this volume out as an important and necessary contribution to existing ESP literature, and one that will be of use to both researchers and practitioners of ESP.

It explores the errors that learners really make and the challenges faced by teachers. The second part outlines a fresh, new, multi-dimensional approach to teaching spelling which recognises the need for learner engagement and strategy training as well as work on the patterns found in English orthography. Macmillan English 2: Practice Book (+ CD-ROM)

Macmillan English is the first International English coursebook to be informed by English lessons in native speaker classrooms. It is designed for second language learners of English but uses many of the approaches to reading, writing and speaking that underpin the teaching of English to first language children. In the early levels, the course does not assume a first language child's experience of spoken English or culture. Language structures are introduced and practised to give a firm grounding in grammar, but from the start, the exposure to new language is more extensive than in traditional second language courses. As children move up through the course, they experience more first language teaching methods. At the upper levels children cover the same aspects of English as do first language learners, though the needs of second language learners are always taken into account. Each level of the course is delivered through eighteen units. Each unit has six lessons requiring a minimum of seven teaching sessions.

Jan Salma Role of Language in Teaching . Learning of Mathematical Word Problems

My interest to understand role of language in teaching and learning mathematical word problems evoked from my teaching and learning experiences. When I look back at my own learning experiences of mathematics at the secondary level, I remember that on a majority of occasions I felt handicapped in understanding the language of the text, especially in mathematics. This is because the language of teaching and learning mathematics is underestimated by teachers. Likewise, during my teaching I realized the need to find out about the role of language in teaching and learning word problems. As I observed students facing difficulties in understanding word problems presented in English. As a result, I wondered as to what extent language played a crucial role in understanding mathematical word problems. Was the role of language in mathematics being ignored? why did one need to understand the language of teaching and learning mathematics? These questions kept bothering me especially when I came across word problems because I believed that language and mathematical word problems were strongly related. Consequently, this book examines the connection between language and mathematical word problems.

Is it because of the insufficient teaching methods, or the poorly organized and compiled syllabus? Or is it because of deficiencies of the individual regarding communication skills? Can it be the lack of experience? In what percentage may the lack of feedback be responsible? Are there any differences between secondary school and language school English teaching? Are language schools more practical, and aim-oriented?The study examines and analyses the possible reasons of this phenomena, including literature overview, assessment of coursebooks and teaching techniques, and analyses the responses on the questionnaires distributed in secondary/language schools, and in the field of labour market.

Patricia Ronan Tense and Aspect Systems in Hiberno-English

Document from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, University of Marburg, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the tense and aspect systems in use in Irish English, which is also called Hiberno-English. Against the background of previous research, corpus material mainly consisting of Dublin English is discussed. The corpus consists of close to a quarter of a million words, collected manually mainly from written text, with some additional examples from participant observation. In addition to investigating the tense and aspect forms in use, possibilities for the geneses of the categories are discussed, and the potential influence from Early Modern English and Late Modern English is assessed, as well as the potential input from the Irish language. It is suggested that the tense system corresponds to that of Standard British English, whereas the aspectual system differs to varying degrees in perfect, progressive and habitual marking. It is further argued that the majority of the specially used aspectual categories in Hiberno-English could have been influenced in their development by influence from both the Irish language - i.e. Gaelic, and by influence from earlier British English language structures which were in use during the formative stages of the variety. This is not the case for the distinctive Hiberno-English after-perfect, however, which is entirely modeled on a corresponding Irish language structure.

Mahmoud Owais Investigating Optimal Bus Routes. Planning and Operation in Urban Areas

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Transportation Science & Technology, , course: Transit planning, language: English, abstract: Transit route Network Design Problem (TrNDP) is the most important component in Transit planning, in which the overall cost of the public transportation system highly depends on it. The main purpose of this study is to develop a novel solution methodology for the TrNDP, which goes beyond pervious traditional sophisticated approaches. The novelty of the solution methodology, adopted in this studyr, stands on the deterministic operators which are tackled to construct bus routes. The deterministic manner of the TrNDP solution relies on using linear and integer mathematical formulations that can be solved exactly with their standard solvers. The solution methodology has been tested through Mandl's benchmark network problem. The test results showed that the methodology developed in this research is able to improve the given network solution in terms of number of constructed routes, direct transit service coverage, transfer directness and solution reliability. Although the set of routes resulted from the methodology would stand alone as a final efficient solution for TrNDP, it could be used as an initial solution for meta-heuristic procedures to approach global optimal. Based on the presented methodology, a more robust network optimization tool would be produced for public transportation planning purposes.

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Englisch - Pädagogik, Didaktik, Sprachwissenschaft, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: India is often called a museum of teaching method, because the direct method and other structural approaches are used. From the German point of view these methods are interesting, because in German teacher education, these methods are banned and therefore cannot be used or studied. It is the more interesting for a teacher in practical work to have knowledge about these relatively old methods of teaching, because they have their positive sides. It is one big goal of this work to have a look at the positive sides of structural approaches in English language teaching. These might be observed in India. First of all, we want to have a look at the role of English in India

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: N/A, Universidad de Oriente in Santiago de Cuba (Faculty of Humanities), course: English Language, language: English, abstract: The ability to teach foreign languages effectively has become an increasingly important skill to develop and improve the language proficiency of students. Teachers need to develop and apply proactive and positive attitudes to foster new levels of foreign language learning within their students. Teaching, on its own, is not a panacea for success. This paper investigates how teachers at the Universidad de Oriente (UO) in Santiago de Cuba search for and apply innovative ways of teaching foreign languages to their students within current boundaries. The results from this research show that there is a positive relationship between the level of proficiency in a foreign language and the methods and approaches teachers apply to keep students motivated and interested in the subject matter. The literature review from this study provided supportive evidence which was strengthened with insights from face to face interviews and a focus group meeting. The outcomes confirmed that students, who are exposed regularly to practical and diverse teaching methods, are more likely to exceed the expected foreign language proficiency levels set by the University's quality standards.

What is more, from my experience it seems to be that teachers in Poland still neglect teaching pronunciation in classrooms. It is also hard to find more sources that Polish teachers could use as a guide to see how English pronunciation is taught in Poland and realise that teaching pronunciation in their country is still neglected. Therefore, I will try to investigate how English is taught in Polish secondary schools.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: A, , course: Master of Science in Teaching English, language: English, abstract: CLIL has been promoted for solving problems of traditional language learning, student motivation and overcrowded curriculum, but the driving forces for implementing CLIL programs are different in each country. There is great accordance within the European Union that existing language barriers need to be broken down to enhance the European integration (Marsh, 2002). Therefore, it is important that most of the students have a communicative proficiency in languages other than their mother tongue. This communicative proficiency can be reached in language teaching by many ways. One method is content and language integrated learning (CLIL).CLIL is an approach that integrates the teaching of subject content with the teaching of a non-native language.Learning other languages is very important in our global society. The knowledge of different languages helps learners to develop skills also in their first language. It helps them to develop skills to communicate about science, arts and technologies to people around the world. In a CLIL classroom, the subject content and language skills are taught together. The new curricula for the Austrian upper secondary vocational colleges (technical as well as economic) require the usage of the English language in content subjects. Within all subjects and teache...

Marco Sievers Day, money, way - A corpus-based investigation of the phraseology of three high frequency nouns and its implications for the design of TEFL materials

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), course: Hauptseminar Corpora and Language Teaching, 40 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The use of corpora has expanded linguistic research possibilities, revolutionized theoretical concepts of language by applying empirical methods, and changed the face of applied linguistics. Although corpora are a tremendous asset to lexicography, translation studies, cultural studies and even to forensics, an awareness of their benefits has not fully arrived in the field of language teaching, yet. While insights from corpora linguistics have led to the development of a new and improved generation of dictionaries, most teaching materials for teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) have been largely unaffected in this respect, and are regrettably still based on old conventions and on the intuition of course book designers. This unfortunate fact is the starting point for the term paper at hand, which investi-gates the high frequency nouns day, money and way in two corpora in order to compare their authentic use by native speakers to their illustration in German teaching materials. Its focus is set on phraseology and frequency to find out if these nouns are adequately represented, or if an amendment of teaching materials is necessary. The spoken part of the British National Corpus (BNC spoken) serves as t...

The rapidly evolving language-technology interface has propelled dramatic changes in, and increased opportunities for, second language teaching and learning. Its influence has been felt no less keenly in the approaches and methods of assessing learners' language and researching language teaching and learning. Contributions from a team of international scholars make up the Handbook consisting of four parts: language teaching and learning through technology; the technology-pedagogy interface; technology for L2 assessment; and research and development of technology for language learning. It considers how technology assists in all areas of language development, the emergence of pedagogy at the intersection of language and technology, technology in language assessment, and major research issues in research and development of technologies for language learning. It covers all aspects of language including grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, pragmatics, and intercultural learning, as well as new pedagogical and assessment approaches, and new ways of conceiving and conducting research and development.
