Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: Small and medium enterprises contribute to more than 50% of GDP in the developed economies. Yet, in developing markets, such as Kazakhstan, this sector remains untapped since SMEs are considered risky and not transparent enough to be financed by banks.Meanwhile, there is a lot of discussion whether SMEs in Kazakhstan can withstand the rivalry from their competitors within the newly formed Eurasian Economic Union. Remaining a threat for weak SMEs, the economic union is also a great opportunity for exporting SMEs in Kazakhstan to expand their businesses through exporting their products and services to the member states of the union. The study aims at identifying the challenges that are faced by the exporting SMEs in Kazakhstan when applying for banking products. Out of these challenges, a number of recommendations are developed for the banking industry in Kazakhstan. The results of the quantitative analysis applied in the study reveal that high interest rates and bank fees, documentary requirements and communication issues are the main challenges that are faced by the exporting SMEs in Kazakhstan. Therefore, banks are recommended to improve their risk assessment methodologies, to provide the SMEs with training programs and to improve their communication with the exporting SMEs.The findings of the study and the proposed recommendations can be...

Internationalization of SMEs is a new direction for research and more and more scholars focus their attention on this phenomenon. Since SMEs comprise the vast majority of the population of firms in Europe, and barriers to internationalization are falling, researchers are increasingly examining SME internationalization issues. However, knowledge about the impact of the foreign country's institutional context on internationalization of SMEs is still rather limited. The research devoted to the influence of institutional environment on the degree of SMEs internationalization is restricted in the form of examining domestic environment that pushes SMEs to go international. The host institutional context may significantly challenge firm's internationalization efforts, though. For the successful internationalization, SMEs should be aware of the challenges that arise from insufficiently developed institutions. These challenges are only limitedly explored.

This research studies the issues and challenges facing SMEs. It investigates into the various legal and policy frameworks set in place by governments for SMEs to proliferate, identify the problems encountered by SMEs to start up, to bloom and to boom. The market also has a very important role to play on the supply side. The market should within the limits set out by the legal and regulatory framework provide the logistics necessary for the market itself to function in a Pareto efficient situation, that is, nobody is made better off at the expense of someone else. On the demand side there are the other economic operators who avail themselves of the facilities and logistics set in place by Governments and other economic agents from the market to add value to the economy. One of these economic agents is the SME sector. The other issue therefore is whether the SMEs did avail themselves of the necessary competencies to manage their business so that from the demand side no stone was left unturned for SMEs to start, grow up and flourish.

The Challenges facing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Obtaining Credit in Ghana, highlights the issues facing Ghana's SMEs in their quest to accessing loans from financial institutions to undertake various business activities all in the name of creating jobs and the ultimate goal of helping to reduce poverty. There are financial institutions that are willing to provide credit facilities to SMEs but Ghanaian SMEs are not able to meet the requirements of these financial institutions even though they are really in need of the loan. Chief among the requirements demanded by these financial institutions is collateral. The nature of collateral in this part of the world is mostly landed property, which most SMEs cannot provide to cover the amount they really need. As a result, some of these SMEs settle for an amount far less than what they truly require to really drive their business agenda. This book thus takes a look at these challenges from the perspective of the Ghanaian SME operators.

Non-Traditional Security in Asia examines the critical security challenges faced by states and societies in Asia including health, food, water, natural disasters, internal conflict, forced migration, energy, transnational crime, and cyber security. Through the development of a comprehensive analytical framework that establishes the key ingredients to policy evaluation, the editors draw on a wide variety of experts to collaborate in investigating these crucial issues. This inclusive framework ensures that all voices are heard including those oftentimes under-represented and marginalized in society to ensure that academic and policy debates are well informed about the often complex and nuanced nature of these non-traditional security challenges.Through an investigation into these specific non-traditional security threats, Non-Traditional Security in Asia documents and evaluates many of the most pressing challenges faced by Asia today. The authors analyse the ways in which particular issues are addressed by the many stakeholders involved in the policy-making process, both within governments and across societies. The question of how these challenges are addressed across and between the different levels of global governance highlights the strengths and weakness that are directly attributable to policy successes and failures. It is through this layered and comprehensive approach, together with an evaluation of the role of stakeholders, which binds together the chapter contributions...

The wide adoption of electronic data interchange (EDI) by the SMEs is important for the success of the technology. A review of past EDI adoption literature indicates that past studies have focused mainly on large businesses. With the advance of technology, SMEs businesses are now able to enjoy the benefits of EDI. SMEs businesses are the backbone of the economy in Nigeria, despite these facts, there are relatively no identified studies on perception of EDI adoption among the Nigerian SMEs. A conceptual model is then proposed to address the above issues. The model may help Nigerians SMEs to achieve higher impacts on their businesses from the adoption of EDI and may also provide strategic roadmap for SMEs in other African countries. Using a technology, organization, and environment framework, this study tested a perception base model against the data collected from 204 SMEs firms in Nigeria. Four factors that were found to be significant in the SMEs EDI adoption were direct benefits, indirect benefits, financial resources, and external pressure to adopt EDI. The results of this study could provide insight into unique factors that drive EDI adoption by SMEs in Nigeria.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for more than 90 per cent of all businesses in the Asia-Pacific region — an area which is rapidly updating its competition laws and regulations to encourage greater entrepreneurship and open, dynamic economies.Yet SMEs are almost invisible when those competition policies and laws are developed and enforced. SMEs are often quite different businesses than large, multinational corporations, but their nature, significance and characteristics are often overlooked. This book seeks to rectify the relative neglect in research and policy discussions on the role of the SME sector in competition policy and law. Drawing on contributions from a wide range of competition regulators, lawyers, academics, consultants and advisers to the SME sector, it addresses such important issues as:- perceptions and views of small businesses about competition law;- regulator engagement and education of the SME sector;- the link between competition law and economic growth;- franchising, SMEs and competition law;- issues in enforcing competition law against SMEs;- the role of Chinese family firms;- trade, professional and industry associations;- country case studies from Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, South Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Japan and the Pacific Islands. "This book is an important step in remedying the gaps in our knowledge and policy of this important area." -- Dr Alan Bollard, Executive Director, APEC Secretariat

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for about 97–99 per cent of total enterprises and 60–80 per cent of total employment in ASEAN countries. The participation of SMEs is thus crucial for achieving greater regional economic integration amongst ASEAN countries. SMEs are, however, often constrained by many disadvantages that limit their abilities to become importers and exporters. This is well documented in the research literature on trade and firm size. This volume contains selected ASEAN country studies on the participation of SMEs in regional economic integration based on primary microdata. This is supplemented by empirical studies on the role played by East Asian multinational enterprises in the region. "The editors and authors of SMEs and Economic Integration in Southeast Asia are to be congratulated for this major contribution to the scholarly and policy literature on a subject of much public discussion but limited analytical research. The emphasis on economic integration highlights the importance of these firms in Southeast Asia’s growing regional and global engagement. The thirteen chapters, by leading authors in the field, comprise both insightful country analyses and careful examination of the links between SMEs and foreign investment." Hal Hill, H.W. The challenge faced by family businesses and their stakeholders, is to recognise the issues that they face, understand how to develop strategies to address them and more importantly, to create narratives, or family stories that explain the emotional dimension of the issues to the family. The most intractable family business issues are not the business problems the organisation faces, but the emotional issues that compound them. Applying psychodynamic concepts will help to explain behaviour and will enable the family to prepare for life cycle transitions and other issues that may arise. Here is a new understanding and a broader perspective on the human dynamics of family firms with two complementary frameworks, psychodynamic and family systematic, to help make sense of family-run organisations. Although this book includes a conceptual section, it is first and foremost a practical book about the real world issues faced by business families. The book begins by demonstrating that many years of achievement through generations can be destroyed by the next, if the family fails to address the psychological issues they face. By exploring cases from famous and less well known family businesses across the world, the authors discuss entrepreneurs, the entrepreneurial family and the lifecycles of the individual and the organisation. They go on to show how companies going through change and transition can avoid the pitfalls that endanger both family and company. The authors then apply tools that will help family businesses in transition and offer their analyses and conclusions. Readers should draw their own conclusions from careful examination of the cases, identifying the problems or dilemmas faced and the options for improved business performance and family relationships. They should ask what they might have done in the given situation and what new insight into individual or family behaviour each case offers. The goal is to avoid a bitter ending.

Ambassador (Dr.) Robin Renee Sanders’ new book on The Rise of Africa’s Small & Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) is an insightful examination of the dramatic shift in the development paradigm for Sub Saharan Africa — driven in large part by the imaginative, innovative, and insta-impact leadership of the region’s small businesses or SMEs. “SMEs have helped drive economic development, growth and aided in increasing the size of the Continent’s middle class,” Sanders says. With the Introduction to the book by renown civil rights leader Ambassador Andrew Young, and the Foreword by Sub Saharan Africa’s leading businessman, Mr. Aliko Dangote, Sanders’ book credits the determination of Africa SMEs and entrepreneurs (which includes African nationals, immigrants and African Americans) for stepping into the void left by 40-years of post-independence development approaches that had little impact on reducing overall poverty and creating jobs in the region. “Africa’s dynamic entrepreneurial spirit of Generation-Xers and Millennials’ are and have formed SMEs and social enterprises that today are responsible for conceiving and inventing many of the new apps, and answers to address the region’s age-old poverty issues,” Sanders emphasizes. “Africa SMEs are not only a key driver for jobs, but serve as an additional catalyst to grow the middle class.” Sanders argues that it was the Rise of the Africa SME – converging with technology and its mobility – that has changed, over the last decade, the ...

This book provides an overview of the contemporary debate about the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the BRIC countries with a special focus on Russia. Conclusions are based on historical perspectives showing that there are huge country-specific divergences and concepts of supporting SMEs. In contrast to multi-national corporations (MNCs), which are not uncommonly supported by the government of the fast-developing country they stem from respectively they are entering and can continue their triumph easily, SMEs often face tremendous difficulties to establish themselves. While the engine of the economy of industrialized countries are SMEs, it seems as if BRICs, especially Russia, struggle to provide appropriate incentives for the foundation of domestic SMEs in order to boost the economic driving force which interviews.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 75.00, University of Geneva, course: Master of Business Administration, language: English, abstract: This project presented an investigation into the impact of microfinance banks (MFBs) on the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Abuja between the periods of (2005-2017). To achieve this, a comprehensive analysis was undertaken regarding the development of Microfinance as an economic tool, and the relevance of SMEs to the achievement of widespread economic empowerment and the alleviation of poverty in Nigeria. Aside from conventional banking services such as the acceptance of deposits and provision of credit, findings from primary research disclosed that the provision of capacity building and other supportive services were designated by the CBN as necessary for adequate development of SMEs. However information on the existence of some of these service or information regarding the measures of success experienced by SMEs in terms of growth through access to these services were difficult to ascertain. Therefore, a secondary research was undertaken on twenty-one (21) MFBs and forty-eight (48) SMEs all based in FCT Abuja, Nigeria with the aim of investigating the factors surrounding the rendering of capacity building and other core microfinance services as prescribed by the CBN. Findings revealed that only a fraction of identifiable CBN-described capacity building service...

This paper examines how higher interest rates in public micro-finance in Tanzania are affecting the growth of SMEs. We argue that these financial institutions can help in giving credit and loans to the SMEs and entrepreneurs for different project implementation and growth but yet the fact may arise out that many SMEs are unable to meet the tough Banks requirements and interest rates currently in place. We realized that even though the project might be, neither too productive, nor too unproductive, reducing such interest rate is inevitable, with the SMEs being involved in borrower selection only. We further, identified statistically the present credit delivery and status of access to these institutions, understanding of interest in loans and SMEs distribution in the country.

Offshore software development outsourcing (OSDO) is an emerging business approach adopted by many software development organizations in developed countries. Developing software at offshore locations has many benefits including access to large labor pool, low development cost and round-the-clock development. However, in spite of these benefits OSDO presents a variety of challenges to the software development organizations including temporal, geographical and intercultural differences. Intercultural differences cause many problems to vendors in OSDO relationships. This research seeks to identify the potential intercultural challenges faced by vendors in OSDO relationships by reviewing the literature in a systematic way. We have developed a systematic literature review (SLR) protocol, and are in the process of implementing the protocol. SLR is based on a structured protocol, and is therefore, different from ordinary literature review. The expected outcomes of this review will be the identification of intercultural challenges faced by vendor organizations in the establishment and maintenance of OSDO relationships.
