This book aims to rehabilitate kinetic modeling in the domain of polymer ageing, where it has been almost abandoned by the research community. Kinetic modeling is a key step for lifetime prediction, a crucial problem in many industrial domains in which needs cannot be satisfied by the common empirical methods. The book proposes a renewed approach of lifetime prediction in polymer oxidative ageing. This approach is based on kinetic models built from relatively simple mechanistic schemes but integrating physical processes (oxygen diffusion and stabilizer transport), and use property (for instance mechanical failure) changes. An important chapter is dedicated to radiation-induced oxidation and its most important applications: radiochemical ageing at low dose rates and photo-chemical ageing under solar radiation. Chemical weapons are a threat to international security. According to an international convention, the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), all chemical weapons fall under a stringent and irreversible disarmament regime that seeks the abolition of the use and existence of chemical weapons altogether. The CWC is considered to be the first verifiable disarmament treaty; furthermore, it targets an entire category of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). Unfortunately there is a gap between the legal requirements of the CWC disarmament regime and its implementation. This gap between the theoretical and practical aspects of disarmament implies a practical, result-based approach to disarmament throughout this study; it raises doubts about the feasibility of chemical weapons disarmament under international law. The central question of this study is whether international law can achieve the effective disarmament of chemical weapons. A background on the chemical weapons disarmament regime is provided in this study. The legal control of chemical weapons follows a clear evolution, from the ban on the use of chemical weapons in conflicts to the international consensus to disarm them altogether. Concerning the legal control for chemical weapons, questions arise about the type of instrument suited for effective disarmament.

In a present work a novel procedure, based on the standard batch tests and pretreatment of wastewater sample with coagulation-flocculation method, was proposed to evaluate the effects of hydrolysis of slowly biodegradable substrate (Xs) on biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes in activated sludge systems. The study was conducted at two large BNR wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in northern Poland: "Wschod" in Gdansk and "Debogorze" in Gdynia. At both studied WWTPs, the removal of colloidal and particulate fractions resulted in explicitly reductions of major biochemical processes rates such as denitrification (NUR), phosphate release/uptake (PRR/PUR) and oxygen utilization (OUR). The average reductions ranged from 13% for the OUR and 24/32% for the aerobic/anoxic PURs, up to 35% for the NUR. The observed role and mechanisms of hydrolysis of Xs, as a part of colloidal and particulate organic compounds, are important in terms of optimization the sedimentation and chemical precipitation in primary clarifiers, i.e. balancing between the efficiency of N, P removal in the bioreactor and biogas production in the digester at WWTPs.

Discharge of heavy metals in wastewater can be toxic to aquatic life and render natural waters as they become unsuitable for human consumption due to their tendency to accumulate in living organisms. These problem are good reasons to search an efficient economically cheap methods with easy technology to removal heavy from polluted water. The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions in this work herein is investigated by an adsorption of heavy metals on a local Libyan Soil called Ashkida soil mined in the Southern Province of Libya. The soil efficiency and removal capacity of heavy metals from aqueous solutions was experimentally investigated in a batch system. The experiments are performed in a batch system at room temperature. It is aimed to study the effects of some parameters of heavy metals adsorption capacity on the soil. A comparison of equilibrium isotherms and kinetic models applied to the adsorption of heavy metals ions on the adsorbent, and parameters were calculated. The adsorption process was physisorption and controlled by an endothermic reaction; however, an efficient heavy metals removal can be achieved at ambient temperature.

The observations on the zooplankton were made with reference to their indicator value, blooms and population density. Rotifers, Cladocerans, Ostracods, Copepods and Larvae of Dipterans were studied quantitatively and qualitatively with relation to the chemical factors in the lake on monthly basis. All the physico-chemical and biological examinations of Bellal Lake suggest that the lake is oligotrophic in its nature.

The purpose of this research is the removal of AOX from industrial wastewaters, which also contain surfactants. We have used coagulation, a conventional physical and chemical process, to remove pollutants from wastewaters, and micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) to treat waters in accordance with the guidelines of sustainable development. In high concentrations, surfactants namely have the ability to form major clusters (micelles), causing the solubilization of organic molecules, such as AOX, which then remain on the ultrafiltration membrane. This method of industrial wastewater treatment is much more effective than other separation processes, as it enables us to simultaneously remove a large amount of organic and inorganic pollutants using surfactants, without having to add special chemicals.

In this study, a series of physical and chemical tests were conducted to investigate, evaluate and improve the building cleaning efficiency. Seven different abrasives were adopted for air abrasive cleaning, including copper slag (coarse, medium and fine), recycled glass (coarse, medium and fine) and hazelnut/almond shell (natural abrasive), on a total of eight masonry stones and clay bricks, including yellow and red sandstones, limestone, marble, granite, and white, yellow and red clay bricks. Physical investigations included sieve tests and impact tests on the abrasives, advanced greyscale image analyses, thickness reduction measurements, Vickers surface hardness tests, Charpy impact tests and water absorption tests. Chemical investigations included Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy analyses. The chemical investigations by using the SEM and EDX techniques showed that the chemical substances on the masonry surfaces varied largely for different types of masonry stones and clay bricks. This study showed the way to detect such soiling using chemical analysis by monitoring the changes in chemical elements/compounds during the building cleaning.

Electricity being one of the basic resources for day-to-day living, the technical availability of this resource is to be ensured with economic viability. This research is an attempt to study the impact of different features of power demand and power generation on the cost of electricity. This study is focused on the objective of cost efficiency in generation of power. The study has been made from three perspectives. At first, attempt has been made to address the problem arising from growth and fluctuations in demand of power. Secondly, in context of growing and fluctuating demand of power the study tried to assess the behaviours of supply of power in terms of installed capacity and capacity utilisation. Application of mathematical models in design and operation of biological nutrient removal systems is becoming more important with the legislations getting stricter. Recent developments in computer technology enabled development of computer programs that are able to solve complex models required to describe the processes taking place in activated sludge plants. In this study, methods for determining COD and nitrogen fractions and kinetic and stoichiometric parameters for domestic and industrial wastewaters are evaluated, and wastewater is fractionated using actual plant measurements and results of previous studies in literature. In addition, IWAQ Activated Sludge Model Number 1 (ASM1) is applied to Comodepur Wastewater Treatment Plant Italy using ASM 1 run-time simulation environment. Due to limitations of the software for simulating the behavior of the WWTP, benchmark configuration of the model had been used and Post Denitrification has not been included in the study. Mostly default kinetic and stoichiometric parameters offered by IWAQ Task Group are used in simulations some of them had been calibrated to get closer values to the measured ones.

However the present research shall be helpful to know the state of water quality and its impact on surrounding area.Adequate steps and proper planning may be adopted to supply fresh and pollution free water.
