Kyle Talbott Feedback Loop. Designing Complex Architecture

Feedback Loop is an introduction to the ideas underlying recent experimentation with complexity in architecture. It presents key concepts such as prototyping, non-linear order, emergence, bottom-up thinking, parametric thinking, generative scripting and biomorphism, and it does so in plain language for students of architecture and others who seek an entry point into the discussion of recent design work. Many of these ideas, which arose in other fields of study, are interpreted architecturally, in order to help designers leverage them in the creative act. By showing how the key concepts work together to define a coherent view of architecture, Feedback Loop supports the conclusion that the pursuit of complexity is poised to expand beyond the avant-garde to become a broad-scoped, long-term architectural movement.

This is the second part of a major theoretical work by Patrik Schumacher, which outlines how the discipline of architecture should be understood as its own distinct system of communication. Autopoeisis comes from the Greek and means literally self-production; it was first adopted in biology in the 1970s to describe the essential characteristics of life as a circular self-organizing system and has since been transposed into a theory of social systems. This new approach offers architecture an arsenal of general comparative concepts. It allows architecture to be understood as a distinct discipline, which can be analyzed in elaborate detail while at the same time offering insightful comparisons with other subject areas, such as art, science and political discourse. On the basis of such comparisons the book insists on the necessity of disciplinary autonomy and argues for a sharp demarcation of design from both art and engineering. Schumacher accordingly argues controversially that design as a discipline has its own sui generis intelligence – with its own internal logic, reach and limitations. Whereas the first volume provides the theoretical groundwork for Schumacher’s ideas – focusing on architecture as an autopoeitic system, with its own theory, history, medium and its unique societal function – the second volume addresses the specific, contemporary challenges and tasks that architecture faces. It formulates these tasks, looking specifically at how architecture is seeking to organize and articulate the complexity of post-fordist network society. The volume explicitly addresses how current architecture can upgrade its design methodology in the face of an increasingly demanding task environment, characterized by both complexity and novelty. Architecture’s specific role within contemporary society is explained and its relationship to politics is clarified. Finally, the new, global style of Parametricism is introduced and theoretically grounded.

This book is about complexity in Information Systems (IS). The subject is addressed from both conceptual and applied perspectives. Concepts are drawn from information theory, industrial design and software engineering. Its content capitalizes on experiences gathered by the authors during various contracting jobs involving software architecture, modeling and IS architecture that were conducted for large organizations in the banking and industry sectors, as well as in the public sector. The authors develop the point of view according to which mastering complexity involves two essential steps: first, one should develop a clear understanding of the real nature of complexity within the IS; second, one should identify the primary causes which contribute to its uncontrolled growth and organize these into a logical framework, in order to define efficient countermeasures. Both technical and psychological causes of complexity are to be considered. Two themes make up the main thread of the book: complexity and value. Both themes are quite common when considered separately, but their interplay remains a largely unexplored topic. The analysis of this interplay is one of the sources of originality of this book.

Mayolo Alberto López Castellanos Agent Based Simulation Approach to Assess Supply Chain Complexity and its Impact on Performance

In today's global business environment, the intense competition, the changing and uncertain conditions, and the increasing customer's requirements are challenges for the companies' operational efficiency and profitability. In this context, companies highlight the importance of supply chain design and its holistic understanding in order to achieve and sustain competitive strengths. This book analyses supply chains as complex systems, whose performance is characterized by their structural configuration and emergent behaviour. The author analyses the supply chain structure and behaviour within the scope of complexity science. He focuses on supply chain complexity by means of a literature review and an empirical research, which give insights into the impact of complexity on supply chain performance. Moreover, within this book the supply chain is modelled as a complex system by considering the non-linear relationships of its geo-positioned elements. Finally, an agent based model is developed for the generic supply chain simulation, which allows assessing the impact of complexity on supply chain performance and characterizing the behaviour of supply chain designs. The materials presented in this book contribute to the understanding and management of supply chain complexity. This work complements existing complexity frameworks with a holistic analysis of complexity's impact on the performance of supply chain participants and their network. The findings of this work a...

In the software development life cycle, changes are inevitable. The software system evolves as changes in the environment and requirements are incorporated in the system. If these changes are not managed properly, the architecture of the software deteriorates and leads to architecture erosion. This study is an effort to address the problem of architecture erosion and to keep the software architecture live and up to date. In this study we propose a method to minimize or avoid architecture erosion. It is based on the concept of architecture vision that is the ideal representation of the architecture of the software in hand. All the activities of this method revolve around the efforts to keep the architecture of the software aligned with an architecture vision. The iterative nature of the method and synchronization of the implemented architecture with the architecture vision helps to detect and reduce architecture erosion. This method does not conflict with or replaces any development or management process or method (like RUP, agile, water fall etc), but exists parallel to them.

Khan Hasan-Udin International Style. Modernist Architrcture from 1925 to 1965

The years from 1925 to 1965 were marked by an optimistic belief that the new technologies of industrialization, spread by applying rational ideas to architecture and urbanism, would produce a qualitatively better world. This "Project of Modernity" was concerned with social agenda as well as form, an aspect that is now sometimes forgotten. The expressions of modern architecture were characterized by a number of different twentieth-century movements, dominated by the International Style. In the 1920s several strands of modernism - Expressionism, Futurism, Functionalism, to name only three of the "isms" - converged into an approach to architecture that is termed internationalist. It was an approach that was global not only in its aspirations and its concerns but also in the presentation of its architecture.

A groundbreaking look at complexity theory and its implications in the world of finance Complexity theory tells us that processes with a large number of seemingly independent agents-such as free markets-can spontaneously organize themselves into a coherent system. In this fascinating book, Edgar Peters brings together scientific theory, the artistic process, and economics to show how the randomness and uncertainty of complexity theory can be applied to financial markets. Written in an engaging and accessible style, this is a thoughtful, conceptual look at the way free markets are, by their nature, continually evolving complex systems. Expanding on previous explorations of chaos theory, Peters draws on real-life examples ranging from the Asian crisis to America's love of conspiracy to show that complexity and randomness are necessary for the free markets to operate in a competitive manner.

Hungary's legacy of historic and modernist buildings rivals that of any country in Eastern or Western Europe. This comprehensive survey of Hungarian architecture from Roman times to the present, the first to be published in English, makes that case abundantly clear. But to appreciate the architectural history of this Central European country, it is necessary to understand architectural solutions indigenous to the Central European region as a whole. This book is both a study of the relationship between Hungary's own architecture and history, and an introduction to the larger field of Central European architecture. The authors, all leading Hungarian architectural historians with access to archives unavailable to Western scholars, provide insight into the special significance that political changes in Hungary had in the shaping of its architecture. They describe the relation of Hungarian architecture to the other arts, the assimilation of outside influences, and the search for an authentic national expression. The authors cover the entire range of Hungarian architecture - including public, private, ecclesiastical, and governmental - as well as engineering, city planning, and technological advances. They also discuss the changing roles of patrons and guilds, and the contribution of architectural publications and education to the Hungarian architectural profession. Perhaps most revealing to Western readers are the illustrations and line drawings, which document one of the most neg...

Meier understands architecture as more than a way to remake local space. Rather, the architecture of this liminal zone was an expression of the desire of coastal inhabitants to belong to places beyond their homeports. Here architecture embodies modern ideas and social identities engendered by the encounter of Africans with others in the Indian Ocean world.

Michael Hensel Performance-Oriented Architecture. Rethinking Architectural Design and the Built Environment

Architecture is on the brink. It is a discipline in crisis. Over the last two decades, architectural debate has diversified to the point of fragmentation and exhaustion. What is called for is an overarching argument or set of criteria on which to approach the design and construction of the built environment. Here, the internationally renowned architect and educator Michael Hensel advocates an entirely different way of thinking about architecture. By favouring a new focus on performance, he rejects longstanding conventions in design and the built environment. This not only bridges the gap between academia and practice, but, even more significantly, the treatment of form and function in design. It also has a far-reaching impact on knowledge production and development, placing an important emphasis on design research in architecture and the value of an interdisciplinary approach. Though ‘performance’ first evolved as a concept in the humanities in the 1940s and 1950s, it has never previously been systematically applied in architecture in an inclusive manner. Here Michael Hensel offers Performance-Orientated Architecture as an integrative approach to architectural design, the built environment and questions of sustainability. He highlights how core concepts and specific traits, such as climate, material performance and settlement patterns, can put architecture in the service of the natural environment. A wide range of examples are cited to support his argument, from traditional sustainable buildings, such as the Kahju Bridge in Isfahan and the Topkapí Palace in Istanbul to more contemporary works by Cloud 9, Foreign Office Architects, Steven Holl and OCEAN.

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich BWL - Unternehmensführung, Management, Organisation, Note: 1.3, Hochschule Albstadt-Sigmaringen; Sigmaringen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Executive SummaryComplexity is one of the most misused expressions of recent years. Corporations use it however, do not understand the full and comprehensive meaning behind it. In many English speaking countries Management aims on reducing complexity in such form. Diverging from that position is a new looks onto Management. Mostly established and developed in German speaking countries, a form of Management started to become recognized which focuses on accepting complexity in its pure form. Therefore, Man-agement needs to search for ways and opportunities where complexity can be used to build structural advantages. The Systemic Management approach emerged from these requirements and points out opportunities how complexity can be fully acknowledged and handled. This different view on complexity will be introduced and discussed in the following thesis. For a better understanding of the basics of this approach it is neces-sary to start with a comprehensive overview of the essential ideas of cybernetics, the science of directing and steering. Afterwards an introduction of methods for dealing with complexity will take place. To show the variety of systemic approaches, three theories will shortly be discussed. The factor that separates the winners from the losers, the successful and the failures, the survivors from the others."(Zachman, 1996, p. 2)The author Zachman (1996, p. 7) emphasises in his article the growing significance of IT architecture for modern enterprises. According to Zachman (1996, p. 1) IT architecture aligns business strategy with information technology and enables the achievement of business goals. Therefore, an efficient IT architecture is a key factor for companies which are faced with increasing changing markets and shorter product life cycles. In contrast to that, an estimated 68% of corporate IT projects are neither on time nor on budget and they don't deliver the original stated business goals (Jeffery & Leliveld, 2004). RegardingFairbanks (2010, p. 8) a major cause for this is an insufficient risk management in the IT architecture development in principle. Therefore many IT architects ask themselves, how they could identify and prioritize their project's most pressing risks? Which architectureand design techniques mitigate the risks and what is the amount of risk reduction? In order to answer these questions, section 2.1 d...

Pape Thomas, Wundram Manfred, Marton Paolo Andrea Palladio. 1508 - 1580. Architect between the Renaissance and Baroque

No other architect in the history of Western art has had an influence so spontaneous and yet so enduring as Andrea Palladio. Palladianism broke through all cultural stylistic barriers. It spread not only throughout the Neo-Latin nations but held Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the countries of Eastern Europe in its sway and formed the lineaments of English architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Palladio lived in an age which was extremely exciting for the historical development of architecture and his work was an important factor in the evolution from Renaissance to Baroque. This volume offers a thorough introduction to the architecture of Palladio and includes all works which researchers have attributed to him.

The Cell processor is an example of the trade-offs made when designing a mass market power efficient multi-core machine, but the machine-exposing architecture and raw communication mechanisms of Cell are hard to manage for a programmer. Cell's design is simple and causes software complexity to go up in the areas of achieving low threading overhead, good bandwidth efficiency, and load balance. Several attempts have been made to produce efficient and effective programming systems for Cell, but the attempts have been too specialized and thus fall short. We present Jack Rabbit, an efficient thread pool work queue implementation, with load balancing mechanisms and double buffering. Our system incurs low threading overhead, gets good load balance, and achieves bandwidth efficiency. Our system represents a step towards an effective way to program Cell and any similar current or future processors.

Brian Goodwin How the Leopard Changed Its Spots. The Evolution of Complexity

Do genes explain life? Can advances in evolutionary and molecular biology account for what we look like, how we behave, and why we die? In this powerful intervention into current biological thinking, Brian Goodwin argues that such genetic reductionism has important limits. Drawing on the sciences of complexity, the author shows how an understanding of the self-organizing patterns of networks is necessary for making sense of nature. Genes are important, but only as part of a process constrained by environment, physical laws, and the universal tendencies of complex adaptive systems. In a new preface for this edition, Goodwin reflects on the advances in both genetics and the sciences of complexity since the book's original publication.

Soviet Asia. Soviet Modernist Architecture in Central Asia

A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces - all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics. Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and Modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays, one by Alessandro De Magistris (architect and History of Architecture professor, University of Milan, contributor to the book Vertical Moscow) and the other by Marco Buttino (Modern and Urban History professor, University of Turin, specializing in the history of social change in the USSR).

Angela Espinosa, Jon Walker COMPLEXITY APPROACH TO SUSTAINABILITY, A. THEORY AND APPLICATION

A major challenge of our times is to understand and manage the increasing complexity of socio-economic reality. This has immediate relevance for sustainable development. The impact of recent contributions from systems and complexity sciences in addressing this issue has not filtered down into effective practice — notably, there remain problems caused by the legacy of competing paradigms and the application of their associated methodologies. This book argues the urgency for the application of analytical tools that embody the principles of complexity management. The authors describe a theoretical framework based on complexity science with a focus on organisational and second order cybernetics, one that presents a powerful new insight into the concept of sustainability. The book also describes actual applications of the ideas in the area of organisational, societal and environmental management, and reflects upon the impact of such an approach on current practice.

J. B. Berndt The Metis of Projects. How to Remain Cognizant of a Project.s (Social) Complexity

A volume in I.S.C.E. Book Series Managing the ComplexSeries Editors Michael Lissack and Kurt A. Richardson, ISCE Research"The Metis of Projects" addresses veteran project manager Ben Berndt's unease with the use ofestablished (project) management frameworks given their general inefficacy. Despite the use ofthese frameworks, it is estimated that some 30% of projects still fail because they deliver too late, cost more than expected and/or lack quality. Often, projects and their environments are toocomplex to be controlled by rather linear frameworks. Where most practitioners define complexityas "complicated," most academics define complexity (more correctly) as interrelatedness. In recent years, the academic community hasdeveloped several "level-of-complexity frameworks;" however, these frameworks are not commonly known to practitioners and aretherefore not regularly used. And, when examined further, these frameworks appear to be merely environmental scans, used to assessthe level of complexity in the project management environment. But projects also carry inherent complexity; they are socially complex, and it is this social complexity that-paradoxically-needs management. Combined with personality assessments, social networktheory is used here to glean a better understanding of the social complexity in a project. Berndt believes that, following Hugo Leticheand Michael Lissack's emergent coherence concept, managers should steer clear of frameworks i...

Kamaran Ali Noori Transvaluation Of Architecture

Human values are the foundation upon which life's various decisions and beliefs stand on. Architecture is a discipline that highly depends on design decision makings and evaluation for various alternatives. Consequently, value and evaluation constitutes important roles in architecture discourse. This research builds on the views that acknowledge the significant of value and evaluation in architecture. For this purpose, this research first provides a general overview to the discussion and interpretations of human values in general and specifically across different fields like philosophy, economic, science, and others. This discussion is then followed by a detailed examining of the state of value in architecture. In doing so, this research reveals the connection between values and architecture and identifies different types of design values that drive architecture. The relation between changes in architecture and changes in design values, discussed in this research, highlights the role of design values in shaping architecture. In recognizing the vast influence of values and changes in values on architecture, this research examines a concept from the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche.

Wundram Manfred Palladio

With this introduction to the work of Andrea Palladio (1508–1580), TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture series shines its spotlight on one of the most influential figures in the history of Western architecture. Palladio’s “Villa Rotonda” in Vicenza became the most famous building of its kind; it influenced many later designs and remains an important source of inspiration for today’s architects. The Palladian style, distinguished by the typical Serlian windows, pillared facades resembling Roman temples, symmetrical floor plans, and elevations, was imported to other European countries and became widely known; in Great Britain it was one the important roots of 17th and 18th century architecture. In the 19th century, American architecture heavily referred to the style, as seen in, for example, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello home. Издание на английском языке.
