The present work lies within the scope of sociolinguistics. It is set to describe and examine lexical variation in youth language including the motives which may affect language change or more precisely dialect change at the level of vocabulary in Tlemcen speech community. As variation and change are conceived as the outcome of various motivations, the study aims at presenting the concepts related to them on the one hand, and at dealing with the description of the situation in Algeria from a historical and a sociolinguistic perspective on the other. In addition to that, it attempts to shed light on the reasons that make the youth use a vocabulary that is different from the one of adults which thus may lead to language change.

This is true because English spoken a millennium ago significantly differs from English spoken today. But how did it change and who were the in-novators who promoted language change in the course of time?It is the aim of the following research paper to show how and why the pronominal system changed from thou to you as the standard second person singular pronoun in the course of the Early Modern English period (1500-1700). More precisely, private correspondence from the 17th century will be examined to see why thou or you respectively were chosen and if it was one gender rather than the other who mainly contributed to the standard that we have today. The first chapter is going to shed light on Renaissance England and its demographical facts with particular emphasis on the role of women. General information will be included as well as some facts about family life, and most importantly, about education and literacy, which is imperative for language change found in written texts. The second chapter is going to investigate when, how and why a change in the pronominal system from thou to you occurred. In order to do so the concepts of power and solidarity as well as aspects of politeness theory will be considered. Chapter tw...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: First Language Acquisition, language: English, abstract: "Language Acquisition represents, perhaps, the most impressive achievement in human development. This is all the more fascinating since this process is quite rapid, and the successive stages for the progressive acquisition of the native language follow a quite similar chronology across languages." (Dominey et al. 2004: 122)What the linguist Peter Dominey here states describes people's fascination about language, specifically language acquisition. Both are highly complex frameworks whose investigation, indeed, can be regarded as an inexhaustible enterprise. Nevertheless, research has been willing to face that challenge, and, over several decades, linguists have been trying to find out how exactly children acquire their native language. Children all over the world, regardless of language and culture, eventually acquire their mother tongue. However, the question how exactly children learn language has not been answered unanimously. One of the interesting observations in language is that adults change their speech while talking to children - a phenomenon referred to as Child-Directed Speech (CDS). Why does this adjustment take place? Changing one's own speech in conversation with children seems to occur quite intuitively and can be observed in any situation of everyday life in whic...

Jalal El Derbas Language Origins in formal and functional linguistics

In the last two decades, "the origin of the human language" has been a topic of disagreement between the formal and the functional linguists. While the formal approach considers language as an innate phenomenon and that humans are endowed with a biological "language organ", the functional approach emphasizes the role of culture in language acquisition and the consideration that language is a cultural product. Linguistically, the formal approach considers "syntax" as the core element of language, while the functional approach considers "symbols" as the cardinal element in a human language. Therefore, the aim of this study is to discuss, evaluate and contribute to the ongoing debate in both formal and functional linguistics on the origin and evolution of human language. It attempts to provide a framework for assessing the linguistic elements that are determined by our biology and those elements that are prescribed by our cultures, in addition to the role biological evolution and cultural change play in shaping the human language.

While the melting of the ice or a slightly rising sea level does not have huge economical impact yet, there are already some natural catastrophes like the hurricanes Katrina or Sandy and storm floods in Japan after the earthquake in 2011 that influence global economy. This essay portrays different causes of climate change (such as anthropological and natural reasons) to then uncover the effects of climate change on global economy. Also, effects of actions to regulate climate change on global economy will be discussed.

This study deals with different explanatory models for the emergence or existence of linguistic features in varieties of the English language. After a brief overview of the current research, five non-standard varieties from all over the world, ranging from a traditional dialect to pidgins and creoles, are analyzed in two morphosyntactic and two phonological features. The theoretical approaches are discussed with reference to the features, providing recommendations for or advice against certain explanatory models. Finally, Bybee's usage-based functionalist approach and the usage-based synthesis of new-dialect formation according to Ansaldo are highlighted as plausible explanations for the features. Formalist, descriptive universals are rejected in favour of functionalist, cognitive universals in human language processing, acquisition and evolution, as they occur in language contact or speaker contact scenarios - the driving force of language change.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: In the twenty-first century change and how to lead it successfully has become a critical topic on the minds of organizational leaders. And that for a very good reason: In today's turbulent environment, things rarely remain the same. Change is happening everywhere. Its speed and complexity are increasing and the future success of organizations depends on how good leaders are at leading change. Some of the major forces contributing to the necessity for change are globalization; open and dynamic market conditions, rapid technological improvement, cultural shifts but also the high expectations of customers. In comparison to the past, we know much more today about change and how to successfully implement change management. Nevertheless, managers continue to make fundamental mistakes when they are trying to implement change. In too many cases the improvements have been poor with wasted resources and burned-out, scared and frustrated employees and turmoil in the culture of organizations. People are creatures of habit and when they get into a routine, they don't necessarily want to change for the sake of change - especially when something is taken away from them that they are used to. When confronted with change, the tendency to respond to it is resistance as they often feel insecure ab...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, University of Birmingham, course: International Development, language: English, abstract: Climate change is a global concern with its impending threats to economies, human development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. This study has further observed that the most common response in addressing climate change impacts to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh is community-based adaptation, whi...

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Münster, course: London's Englishes, 13 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: (...) The speech variant of the next generation up the ladder is a better candidate for being the source of language change, as the peculiarities of teenagers' speech are not peculiar features of individual speakers, but they exist by convention, which means that at least the speakers of one group must have already agreed upon this specific feature. This makes it a lot easier for any innovation to carry on into adult speech. Furthermore, it is more likely for youth language features to become standard than that of other varieties because on the one hand, all youths will eventually become adults, while on the other hand, youth language is not a variety restricted to a very specific situation but by definition the default way of speaking for teenagers, so to say. So unlike other varieties, youth language does apply to a great part of the speech community in general. Therefore, it should be very easy for features of youth language to carry on into adult language by just not being dropped by their speakers. However, this assumption of teenage language being the main source for language change is of course not self-evident. It is therefore of high interest to have a further look whether such a proposition is really true or not. Therefore, it is good i...

A volume in Contemporary Language EducationSeries Editor: Terry Osborn, University of South Florida Sarasota-ManateeThere is pressure on world language educators to prepare learners with 21st century skills to meet the challenges of an increasingly interconnected globalized world. The need for change was summarized in the 2007 report of the MLA Ad Hoc Committee on Foreign Languages that suggested the implementation of curricular reform by developing students' "translingual and transcultural competence" (p. 3) which allows someone "to operate between languages" (p.237). How-ever, the integration of such a meaningful cultural component in instructed language learning is a complex topic. This book recognizes the difficulty world language educators face to achieve the goals of the MLA report, particularly at beginning levels of instruction in target language use classrooms. Accordingly, this book informs instructed language learning and teaching by bridging developmental theories from the fields of intercultural competence with second language pedagogies-particularly communicative language teaching (CLT) and literacy-based approaches-providing examples of practical applications inside the classroom and beyond. It is intended to support the many FL educators who have consistently reported that they are struggling to incorporate meaningful cultural instruction into their practice (Fox & Diaz-Greenberg 2006; Phillips & Abbott, 2011; Sercu, 2005).This book...

Statistics on transformational change is not very positive though, only around 30 percent is reported to be successful. Nevertheless, some positive examples of the past and present show that transformational change indeed can succeed - if done correctly. What are the factors that define whether a change will succeed or fail? The main objective of the thesis will be to analyse the success criteria of transformational change and the leader's role in it on example of a Japanese car maker. Nissan's turnaround in 1999 was initially criticised by industry insiders, but two years after the beginning of the transformation it was widely discussed in the international media and claimed as "sensational" because of its prompt and astonishing results. One man behind this change was Carlos Ghosn, who had a double function at that time as COO, both of Nissan and Renault, and could bring the heavy in-debt Japanese car maker into the black again.

Transformations or changes of Finsler metrics have many applications not only in differential geometry but also in various branches of science, especially in physics. These changes have been studied by many authors, from both the mathematical and physical aspects. G. Randers, in 1941, introduced the Randers change. M. Masumoto, in 1974, studied the Randers change and generalized Randers change. V. Kropina, in 1961, introduced the Kropina change. On the other hand, in 1976, M. Hashiguchi studied the conformal change of Finsler metrics. In 2008, S. Abed introduced the β-conformal change, thus generalizing the conformal, Randers and generalized Randers changes. In this work, we introduce a more general change of Finsler metrics, which is referred to as a generalized β-conformal change. This change combines both β-change and conformal change, in a general setting, generalizing the most important changes existing in the literature. The geometric consequences of such change are investigated. Various special Finsler spaces are studied under this change. This book is highly recommended to both postgraduate students and researchers in geometry and its applications, especially in physics.

Teacher Development in Action offers a rich account of language teachers' engagement with the latest research in second language motivation on a year-long teacher development project. It offers an in-depth analysis of how language teachers mobilize (or not) their vast inner resources when they make sense of new material, and sheds light on why language classrooms do not always become acquisition-rich and motivating environments, even when teachers show great interest in new ideas and find them highly relevant to their practice. Drawing on a grounded theory ethnographic study of EFL teachers in Slovakia, this book, now in paperback, breaks new theoretical ground in the language teacher cognition domain and weaves together findings from field notes, classroom observations and interviews into an integrated model of Language Teacher Conceptual Change (LTCC). The new insights into the complex and dynamic nature of teacher development constitute an original contribution to the field of applied linguistics and have significant implications for second language teacher education and development.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: Nowadays, organizations are continuously changing. Frequently, due to a changing business environment, companies are forced to rethink their strategic direction and structure in order to remain competitive. New government regulations, growth, increasing competition, changing customer needs and technological developments are only some of the causes for an organization to change. The fact that nowadays change is inevitable in organizations and that still many change initiatives fail, aroused my interest in the topic. Especially, I want to find out what happens when human variables are taken into account. The main goal of my thesis is to examine the role of a change agent. What strategies can he or she use to overcome resistance as a major employee reaction to organizational change?

IntroductionEnglish, being a global language with more than 400 million L1 speakers and many hundreds of millions second language speakers, has its origin in the Anglo-Saxon period (McIntyre 2009: 31). Throughout time the English language has undergone an extensive change. In the beginning there were four major dialects of Old English. Nowadays, English, as a lingua franca, is spoken in all parts of the world and has become the official language in countries like Uganda, Liberia or Ghana (McIntyre 2009: 31). As my term paper is concerned with the topic of e-English, it is vital to mention that the development of the internet and the World Wide Web, two distinctive terms that must be looked at separately, had a huge impact on the development of English (Baron 2003: 2). As a result of the British colonisation, English spread overseas and had been spoken in all parts of the British Empire. The Expansion of the English language still continues nowadays, though not through colonisation, but a mixture of various factors such as politics, economics and most important with regard to my term paper technology (McIntyre 2009: 27). Therefore, the first aspect to point out in this essay focuses on the technical requirements that facilitate language exchange througho...

Throughout the history, English was changing steadily. Not only was the English grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary being altered over the centuries but also the semantics of lexemes. A major factor that has a considerable impact on the semantics of words is the influence of foreign languages. This study deals with semantic changes due to the Latin influence on the English language in the Early Modern English period. The aim of the analysis is - with the help of the Oxford English Dictionary Online - to determine potential patterns of meaning alterations of English lexemes that were caused by the influx of Latin-derived equivalents, especially on the field of human anatomy, and between the 15th and the 18th century. Moreover, the Early Modern English period is portrayed as well as the roles of Latin and English during that time, also considering the integration of Latin loanwords into English. In order to discuss meaning changes due to Latin influences, a closer look will be taken at language modifications in general, at lexical change and at the various types of semantic change by which English words might have been affected.

Meet the man who makes the mission of learning any language possible! The all-you-need guide to learning a language. Language hacker Benny Lewis shows how anyone anywhere can learn any language without leaving their home, using a simple toolkit and by harnessing the power of the Internet. Benny definitely wasn’t born with the ‘language gene’. After graduating in electronic engineering in his native Ireland he spent six months in Spain struggling to learn Spanish. This frustrating experience fuelled his determination to take a different approach to learning foreign languages. Today he speaks over ten languages including Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, and Hungarian. He has also learnt Japanese in Spain. This typifies one of his ‘3-month challenges’ where he targets a new language and proceeds to become fluent in it within just three months. He charts his progress on his blog, proving that his techniques allow anyone to learn a language from anywhere. Benny’s blog, also called Fluent in 3 Months, is the largest language learning blog in the world. The key principles of Benny’s method: • Speak from day one: find mother-tongue speaking partners online. Don’t be self-conscious – keep the flow going! • Change your mindset: ditch the excuses, you can do it! • Stay focused and determined: even if you don’t have much time, never forget the goal you’ve set yourself and work at it. • Learning a language doesn’t need to be expensive: there is a wealth of free resources out there, if you know where to find them • Reap the rewards! Learning a new language is not an end in itself, but a means to meeting new people and discovering new cultures. Curiosity will fuel your determination.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Sociolinguistics: language variation and change, language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionIn September 2010 a huge debate started in Britain after the famous actress Emma Thompson had given an interview for the BBC during which she complained heavily about the language of teenagers. "I went to give a talk at my old school and the girls were all doing their 'likes' and 'innit' and 'it ain'ts', which drives me insane"1, she said indignantly. Her statement probably mirrors what the majority of adults think of the language used by teenagers today. "Parents and teachers often have a critical and negative attitude towards adolescent language, judging it as 'sloppy' and attempting to correct vernacular features such as local accents, slang words, discourse particles or code-mixing." (Androutsopoulos 2005: 1501) This debate about the appropriateness or inappropriateness of vernacular language use traces back to the very roots of modern sociolinguistics. The American linguist William Labov was the first who conducted several quantitative studies concerning language variation in the 1960s (cf. Becker & Bieswanger 2006: 193). He tried to find out how the social background of speakers influences their language use, and why people decide to use either st...

Language in academic settings, also referred to academic language, has gained attentionin the field of second language learning owing to new understandings of the complexitiesof language inherent in learning academic content, and new efforts to assessEnglish learners' language proficiency in the context of school learning. The conceptof academic language as distinct from social language has been in the academic literaturesince the mid-1950s, and surfaced as a major construct in the field of bilingualeducation in the 1980s. Many readers will be familiar with the ideas of BICS andCALP, first introduced by Jim Cummins in the 1980s. This book presents a critique ofacademic language as a separable construct from social language, and introduces currentresearch efforts to understand how English learners interact, interpret, and showunderstanding of language in academic contexts in ways that re-think and go beyondthe distinction between social and academic language. The book is organized into three main sections, each with a range of chapters that consider how academic language playsinto how children and youth learn academic content as emergent bilingual students in school settings. A Foreward andAfterward offer commentary on the book and its contents. The intended audience for this book is graduate students, teachereducators, and researchers interested in issues of language and content learning for English learners, the new mainstream ofschools across the nation. Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 2,3, University of applied Sciences Regensburg, course: Language and Intercultural Competence, language: English, abstract: Language, or communication, in a broader sense, is just a part of culture but a very important one because a shared language allows members of different cultures to express themselves and communicate with each other. Just as norms, expectations and behaviour, language vary across cultures, and it can change and evolve in the course of time for several reasons, e.g. new needs of the speakers of a language, technological progress, new products, just to mention a few. The origins of human language have been discussed as a topic for centuries and there is no consensus as to when it really began. Noam Chomsky, an American linguist and often referred to as the "father of modern linguistics", states that it has been an evolutionary process that still goes on today because he speaks of a so-called Language Faculty as a special component of the human brain which is specifically dedicated to language and required for language acquisition. Michael Corballis, emeritus professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Auckland, is challenging Chomsky's theory as he argues in his book "The Truth about Language" that gesture was crucial to the development of speech instead of a single mutation in a single human. He states...
