Document from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, Islamic Azad University, language: English, abstract: The history of language teaching has been dominated by the upward progression of teaching methods. Much of language teaching prior to the twentieth century was conducted according to a so called grammar translation methodology, which was replaced by a revolution in language teaching that focused on the Direct Method. This was then followed by a series of methods that started with Audiolingualism, developed during and after world war two. Following these methods, several methods, including audio-visual method, cognitive code, and a cluster of new methods that emerged in the 1970s such as the silent way, suggestopedia, Total Physical Response, Communicative language teaching and Task-based learning were introduced.

The Handbook of Technology and Second Language Teaching and Learning presents a comprehensive exploration of the impact of technology on the field of second language learning. The rapidly evolving language-technology interface has propelled dramatic changes in, and increased opportunities for, second language teaching and learning. Its influence has been felt no less keenly in the approaches and methods of assessing learners' language and researching language teaching and learning. Contributions from a team of international scholars make up the Handbook consisting of four parts: language teaching and learning through technology; the technology-pedagogy interface; technology for L2 assessment; and research and development of technology for language learning. It considers how technology assists in all areas of language development, the emergence of pedagogy at the intersection of language and technology, technology in language assessment, and major research issues in research and development of technologies for language learning. It covers all aspects of language including grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, pragmatics, and intercultural learning, as well as new pedagogical and assessment approaches, and new ways of conceiving and conducting research and development. The Handbook of Technology and Second Language Teaching and Learning demonstrates the extensive, multifaceted implications of technology for language teachers, learners, materials-developers, and researchers.

Jan Salma Role of Language in Teaching . Learning of Mathematical Word Problems

My interest to understand role of language in teaching and learning mathematical word problems evoked from my teaching and learning experiences. When I look back at my own learning experiences of mathematics at the secondary level, I remember that on a majority of occasions I felt handicapped in understanding the language of the text, especially in mathematics. This is because the language of teaching and learning mathematics is underestimated by teachers. Likewise, during my teaching I realized the need to find out about the role of language in teaching and learning word problems. As I observed students facing difficulties in understanding word problems presented in English. As a result, I wondered as to what extent language played a crucial role in understanding mathematical word problems. Was the role of language in mathematics being ignored? why did one need to understand the language of teaching and learning mathematics? These questions kept bothering me especially when I came across word problems because I believed that language and mathematical word problems were strongly related. Consequently, this book examines the connection between language and mathematical word problems.

Is it because of the insufficient teaching methods, or the poorly organized and compiled syllabus? Or is it because of deficiencies of the individual regarding communication skills? Can it be the lack of experience? In what percentage may the lack of feedback be responsible? Are there any differences between secondary school and language school English teaching? Are language schools more practical, and aim-oriented?The study examines and analyses the possible reasons of this phenomena, including literature overview, assessment of coursebooks and teaching techniques, and analyses the responses on the questionnaires distributed in secondary/language schools, and in the field of labour market.

Addressing issues of language is crucial for improving mathematicslearning and teaching for students who are bilingual, multilingual, or learning English. These issues are alsorelevant to theory: studies that make language visible provide a complex perspective of the role of languagein reasoning and learning mathematics. What is the relevant knowledge base to consider when designingresearch studies that address issues of language in the learning and teaching of mathematics? Whatscholarly literature is relevant and can contribute to research? In order to address issues of language inmathematics education, researchers need to use theoretical perspectives that integrate current views ofmathematics learning and teaching with current views on language, discourse, bilingualism, and secondlanguage acquisition. With the unrelenting spread of globalization, the English language has been firmly established as the Lingua Franca. Now more than ever, the importance of learning English is paramount within nearly all professional and educational sectors. English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has long been accepted as an effective method for teaching English as a foreign language. In recent years, it has experienced an increasing presence in secondary and tertiary education across the globe. This is predominantly due to its learner-centered approach that focuses on developing linguistic competence in the student’s specific discipline, may that be academics, business or tourism, for example. Positioning English for Specific Purposes in an English Language Teaching Context attempts to present and define the relevance and scope of ESP within English Language teaching. From mobile phones as educational tools to the language needs of medical students, the contributors to this volume examine and propose different epistemological and methodological aspects of ESP teaching. Its unique approach to ESP marks this volume out as an important and necessary contribution to existing ESP literature, and one that will be of use to both researchers and practitioners of ESP.

Macmillan English is the first International English coursebook to be informed by English lessons in native speaker classrooms. It is designed for second language learners of English but uses many of the approaches to reading, writing and speaking that underpin the teaching of English to first language children. In the early levels, the course does not assume a first language child's experience of spoken English or culture. Language structures are introduced and practised to give a firm grounding in grammar, but from the start, the exposure to new language is more extensive than in traditional second language courses. As children move up through the course, they experience more first language teaching methods. At the upper levels children cover the same aspects of English as do first language learners, though the needs of second language learners are always taken into account. Each level of the course is delivered through eighteen units. Each unit has six lessons requiring a minimum of seven teaching sessions.

Teachers need to develop and apply proactive and positive attitudes to foster new levels of foreign language learning within their students. Teaching, on its own, is not a panacea for success. This paper investigates how teachers at the Universidad de Oriente (UO) in Santiago de Cuba search for and apply innovative ways of teaching foreign languages to their students within current boundaries. The results from this research show that there is a positive relationship between the level of proficiency in a foreign language and the methods and approaches teachers apply to keep students motivated and interested in the subject matter. The literature review from this study provided supportive evidence which was strengthened with insights from face to face interviews and a focus group meeting. The outcomes confirmed that students, who are exposed regularly to practical and diverse teaching methods, are more likely to exceed the expected foreign language proficiency levels set by the University's quality standards.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), course: Hauptseminar Corpora and Language Teaching, 40 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The use of corpora has expanded linguistic research possibilities, revolutionized theoretical concepts of language by applying empirical methods, and changed the face of applied linguistics. Although corpora are a tremendous asset to lexicography, translation studies, cultural studies and even to forensics, an awareness of their benefits has not fully arrived in the field of language teaching, yet. While insights from corpora linguistics have led to the development of a new and improved generation of dictionaries, most teaching materials for teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) have been largely unaffected in this respect, and are regrettably still based on old conventions and on the intuition of course book designers. This unfortunate fact is the starting point for the term paper at hand, which investi-gates the high frequency nouns day, money and way in two corpora in order to compare their authentic use by native speakers to their illustration in German teaching materials. Its focus is set on phraseology and frequency to find out if these nouns are adequately represented, or if an amendment of teaching materials is necessary. Galib Shahriar Foreign Language Teaching and Learning in Bangladesh. An Investigation on the impact of Authentic Material

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2012 in the subject English - Miscellaneous, , course: Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages, language: English, abstract: This research aims to find out whether there is any impact on performance when students read authentic materials beside the textbooks. Students in Bangladesh often have difficulties in learning English as a foreign language for lack of appropriate learning materials in the classroom. Too often foreign language teaching texts in our country are designed either too difficult or too easy for students. Without appropriate texts that suit them, learners spend long hours in the classroom accomplishing very little in the long run. Most of them remain weak in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English properly even after receiving higher education. Students' performance varies according to the type of materials given to them. A significant amount of research shows that there is something about the type of textbooks/materials that should be looked into and evaluated carefully so that necessary adaptation can be made for effective learning to take place. When learners are introduced to variety of materials, it is necessary to understand what impact they have on the learners.

The Council Resolution of 31 March 1995 on improving and diversifying language learning and teaching within the education systems of the European Union made it clear that in language learning and teaching, as in education in general, the principle of subsidiarity applies. There is great accordance within the European Union that existing language barriers need to be broken down to enhance the European integration (Marsh, 2002). Therefore, it is important that most of the students have a communicative proficiency in languages other than their mother tongue. This communicative proficiency can be reached in language teaching by many ways. One method is content and language integrated learning (CLIL).CLIL is an approach that integrates the teaching of subject content with the teaching of a non-native language.Learning other languages is very important in our global society. The knowledge of different languages helps learners to develop skills also in their first language. It helps them to develop skills to communicate about science, arts and technologies to people around the world. In a CLIL classroom, the subject content and language skills are taught together. The new curricula for the Austrian upper secondary vocational colleges (technical as well as economic) require the usage of the English language in content subjects. The gap between theory and practice might be the reason many private and public schools are failing to enable the students to acquire the English language (Dewey, 1938). As Mathew (2012) maintained, "Teaching and learning tends to become as two disconnected activities when teachers do not take responsibility for student learning and achievement. Reflective practitioners are those who identify these gaps and create conditions needed to raise the achievement levels". The "Reflection and Perfection in Foreign Language Teachers" is the guide choice for teachers, educators, scholars, syllabus designers and all those who pursue progress in the field of Foreign Language Teaching.

Thinking Theologically about Language Teaching. Christian Perspectives on an Educational Calling

Christians can often overlook the need to bring their daily vocations in accord with the reality created, sustained, and purposed through Christ. This is no less true for language teachers, who find themselves at a difficult interdisciplinary crossroads where the paths of linguistics, culture and education merge. This challenge should not discourage these educators, but instead aid them in their journey to form a pedagogy rooted in theological truths from Scripture, one that provides a nuanced approach that glorifies God in a manner specific to the language classroom. The contributors of this book outline why and how theology must inform teaching methods so that Christian language educators might better serve their students with both faith and excellence, thereby pointing them to the communicative God whose image they bear.

Banwo Adetoro Olaniyi Chinese Made Easy. Introducing Chinese Language to Yoruba Speakers

Document from the year 2016 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Chinese / China, , language: English, abstract: Chinese Made Easy was a project inspired by the 'Three Language Flavour Project' of the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria. The central aim of the project is to make Chinese easy for non-native speakers of the language and most especially to bring the language to them in their local language. This work translates Chinese into English and then into Yoruba, it's the first of its kind in the history of Nigeria and Africa as a whole. For language to be easily disseminated it has to be absorbed in a form in which the learner can interpret and understand the contents of the language. This principle guided the development of the contents of this work. While this work is useful for those who are keen on the Chinese language, this work also bridges the gap for Chinese citizens who seek to understand and have knowledge of the Yoruba language. It is a piece of works that would help younger learners and adults learn the Chinese language with ease.

The series, written by Simon Greenall and the highly-experienced Reward author team, is now complete. The course is based on a broad and integrated multi-syllabus approach: broad in the sense that it gives obvious systematic focus to grammar and language functions, vocabulary, the four skills and sounds, but also in that it implicitly covers a variety of topics, learner training and socio-cultural competence. Each Student's Book provides a 70-hour core syllabus of forty teaching lessons and eight Progress Check lessons with each teaching lesson designed to take about 90 minutes. New language is presented through dialogues and reading texts, which are often preceded by warm-up work on new vocabulary. New grammar, functions and vocabulary are always highlighted in coloured boxes for easy reference. British English is used as the model for the grammar, spelling and pronunciation, but other varieties of English are included for listening and reading practice.

Paula Garrett-Rucks Intercultural Competence in Instructed Language Learning. Bridging Theory and Practice

A volume in Contemporary Language EducationSeries Editor: Terry Osborn, University of South Florida Sarasota-ManateeThere is pressure on world language educators to prepare learners with 21st century skills to meet the challenges of an increasingly interconnected globalized world. The need for change was summarized in the 2007 report of the MLA Ad Hoc Committee on Foreign Languages that suggested the implementation of curricular reform by developing students' "translingual and transcultural competence" (p. 3) which allows someone "to operate between languages" (p.237). How-ever, the integration of such a meaningful cultural component in instructed language learning is a complex topic. This book recognizes the difficulty world language educators face to achieve the goals of the MLA report, particularly at beginning levels of instruction in target language use classrooms. Accordingly, this book informs instructed language learning and teaching by bridging developmental theories from the fields of intercultural competence with second language pedagogies-particularly communicative language teaching (CLT) and literacy-based approaches-providing examples of practical applications inside the classroom and beyond. It is intended to support the many FL educators who have consistently reported that they are struggling to incorporate meaningful cultural instruction into their practice (Fox & Diaz-Greenberg 2006; Phillips & Abbott, 2011; Sercu, 2005).This book...

Serafima Plauska The Use of Song Lyrics in Teaching English Tenses

Songs have been present in peoples lives from the very beginning of humanity. They have been with us during religious ceremonies, in bars and in the shower. Songs have become an integral part of our language experience, and if used in coordination with a language lesson they can be of great value. The research, presented in this book considers a comparative study and analysis in the usage of song lyrics and the traditional more formal course book exercises in the teaching of Present Simple, Present Continuous and Past Simple tenses to year 7, 8 and 9 students. The aim of this book is to introduce the different methods of teaching English verb tenses, the use of song lyrics and music in the EFL classroom. It also focused on the reasons for using songs by demonstrating their effectiveness as a learning tool. The fact that grammar teaching may sometimes appear to be boring for certain students may make them rather unwilling to learn the grammar of a foreign language. In this situation, teachers should find some alternative, more motivating ways of teaching it.
