Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Champions of Human Capital in organisations, such as Human Resources directors, are in need of empirical evidence to justify to board members, CEOs and ultimately shareholders why financial investments into Human Capital should be increased or at least maintained. The research questions posed in this thesis take on the challenge to find empirical evidence that investment in Human Capital, through Human Resources, has a positive impact on intermediate as well as accounting and share-value indicators of organisational performance. This literature review summarises, integrates and evaluates research published between 1998 and 2003 pertaining to the direct and indirect relationship between Human Resources on different indicators of intermediate and bottom-line performance. The review is comprised of 31 articles clustered into the following topics: strategic HRM, Human Resources Development, technology, diverse workforces and flexible working conditions and methodological issues in HR-organisational performance research. Evidence for the direct and indirect impact of HR on organisational performance is discussed and the findings are interpreted with reference to Ostroff and Bowen’s Multi-Level Model (2000), which explains the individual, organisational and inter-level relationships between Human Resources and organisational performance. Enabling conditions that strengthen the HR-organisational performance relationship are identified. Methodological issues s...

Michael Hensel Performance-Oriented Architecture. Rethinking Architectural Design and the Built Environment

Architecture is on the brink. It is a discipline in crisis. Over the last two decades, architectural debate has diversified to the point of fragmentation and exhaustion. What is called for is an overarching argument or set of criteria on which to approach the design and construction of the built environment. Here, the internationally renowned architect and educator Michael Hensel advocates an entirely different way of thinking about architecture. By favouring a new focus on performance, he rejects longstanding conventions in design and the built environment. This not only bridges the gap between academia and practice, but, even more significantly, the treatment of form and function in design. It also has a far-reaching impact on knowledge production and development, placing an important emphasis on design research in architecture and the value of an interdisciplinary approach. Though ‘performance’ first evolved as a concept in the humanities in the 1940s and 1950s, it has never previously been systematically applied in architecture in an inclusive manner. Here Michael Hensel offers Performance-Orientated Architecture as an integrative approach to architectural design, the built environment and questions of sustainability. He highlights how core concepts and specific traits, such as climate, material performance and settlement patterns, can put architecture in the service of the natural environment. A wide range of examples are cited to support his argument, from traditional sustainable buildings, such as the Kahju Bridge in Isfahan and the Topkapí Palace in Istanbul to more contemporary works by Cloud 9, Foreign Office Architects, Steven Holl and OCEAN.

This book, on the ergonomics of human−machine systems, is aimed at engineers specializing in informatics, automation, production or robotics, who are faced with a significant dilemma during the conception of human−machine systems. On the one hand, the human operator guarantees the reliability of the system and has been known to salvage numerous critical situations through an ability to reason in unplanned, imprecise and uncertain situations; on the other hand, the human operator can be unpredictable and create disturbances in the automated system. The first part of the book is dedicated to the methods of human-centered design, from three different points of view, the various chapters focusing on models developed by human engineers and functional models to explain human behavior in their environment, models of cognitive psychology and models in the domain of automobile driving. Part 2 develops the methods of evaluation of the human−machine systems, looking at the evaluation of the activity of the human operator at work and human error analysis methods. Finally, Part 3 is dedicated to human−machine cooperation, where the authors show that a cooperative agent comprises a know-how and a so-called know-how-to-cooperate and show the way to design and evaluate that cooperation in real industrial contexts.

This book argues for a prospective turn in ergonomics to challenge the established fields of strategic design (SD) and management. Its multi-disciplinary outlook builds upon concepts derived from Management, Innovation and Design Science. Differences, similarities and relationships between strategic design and prospective ergonomics are reviewed using existing theories and frameworks from design, ergonomics, and strategic and innovation management. To complement the theory, 12 cases have been analyzed in greater depth according to 4 main dimensions of analysis. Outcomes have shown that innovating through the Prospective Ergonomics (PE) approach is about finding the right balance between, on the one hand, meeting primary objectives such as profit maximization or solving the design problem, and on the other, acknowledging that human activity is bounded by rationality. This means that humans have diverse motives.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: A, Birkbeck, University of London, language: English, abstract: This study seeks to address the issue of climate change through a human rights lens by focusing on the causes of climate change and its impacts on both the environment and human rights. It highlights the close link between capitalist industrialization and environmental degradation and explains how this consequently leads to human rights violations. This research tackles human rights approach to climate change with a special focus on international human rights instruments mainly the two international covenants, the ICCPR and the ICESCR, it seeks to understand whether they impose international obligations on states to protect human rights from the adverse effects of climate change and how those imposed duties can be enforced to effectively protect people's rights.Unfortunately, this paper will reach to the conclusion that the existing human rights law does not adequately protect human rights from the lethal threat of climate change, due to the absence of a universally recognized right to a healthy environment, moreover, despite the possibility of the extraterritorial application of the ICESCR, the political will of states to cooperate under the provisions of the covenant to face the issue of climate change seems to be also absent.

Many books have been written about human resources. These books usually explain theory or focus on a certain topic. Human resources is a working field, and I believe it is very hard to put theory into practice. External factors, as well as administrative understanding and perspective, generally move human resources applications away from theory. Companies often define human resources under their corporate structure as secondary or other management. Although this situation is different in some of companies, the common approach in the sector takes this direction. Any manager who deals with humans should understand human resources to manage performance better. In this book, I try to show how to achieve that from a human resources and management perspective.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system refers to Information Systems, Business Processes, and People. Basically, it is a changing procedure in organizations that strive for company-wide high performance. Business Process Transformation is about changing a company’s focus - from products to customers. Information Systems are replaced by a homogenous system environment which integrates all information into a common system. The behaviour and skills of the company-wide personnel are adapted to perform in the new "world". The big challenge of the implementation is to have the properly-trained people for a high-performance organization. Unfortunately, most companies do not recognize that need. They underestimate the impact that the human factor has on an ERP approach; they consider the implementation as a software-installation with influence to the business. But, the implementation is much more complex. This thesis is dedicated to all those persons who intend to implement an Enterprise Resource Planning system, and who want to understand the theory of Business Process Transformation and how it is linked to Enterprise Resource Planning. To emphasize the importance of the human factors within the implementation, chapter 4 elaborates on End-User Training as a significant part of an implementation for a company dedicated to becoming a high-performance organization. This paper also includes a case study of an ERP implementation...

Performance measurement systems are a key instrument of subsidiary controlling. The correct use of performance measures combined with the right incentives can help reduce information asymmetry between the corporate centre and subsidiaries and at the same time ensure an orientation toward corporate objectives on all levels. In this book, the concept of performance measurement systems in the context of subsidiary controlling is explained. One focus is the thorough discussion of financial performance measures and their use in subsidiary controlling. Particularities in subsidiary controlling are for instance the determination of divisional cost-of-capital for value-based management and the aggregation of measures to the corporate level. The second focus is the design of performance measurement systems depending on certain characteristics of the company and its environment. It is emphasised that there is not one right way of designing controlling systems. Instead, they have to be aligned to certain situational variables such as strategy, organisational structure or environmental uncertainty. For example, managers of business units that pursue differentiation strategies should be evaluated by more non-financial performance measures than managers of business units with a low-cost strategy. The book can be used as guidance for prac...

This book provides a comprehensive yet accessible overview of land systems vulnerability assessment in Asia – fundamental to the understanding of the link between global change, environmental sustainability and human wellbeing. The extent and intensity of human interactions with the environment have increased spectacularly since the Industrial Revolution. Thus, the global change research community and development practitioners increasingly recognize the need to address the adverse consequences of changes taking place in the structure and function of the biosphere and the implications for society. With a focus on Asia, this book provides an overview of the vulnerability of land systems and the subsequent multiple stressors in this region. The book offers a discussion surrounding the potential causal processes that affect land systems vulnerability and our capacity to cope with different perturbations. It also identifies factors that help to integrate vulnerability assessment into policy and decision-making. • Addresses the complex issues arising from human–environment interactions that cannot be satisfactorily dealt with by core disciplinary methods alone. • Key coverage of a variety of topics from the vulnerability of smallholder agriculture and urban systems to the impact of socioeconomic processes at the sub-regional level. • Coverage of the causal processes that affect land systems vulnerability and capacity to cope with different perturbations are documented. • Focus on integrating vulnerability assessment into policies and decision-making • Includes contributions from leading academics in the field.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , language: English, abstract: This study aims to investigate the usage of performance measures, conceptualized as the BSC measures, within an organizational context. This research considers itself as a descriptive research. The questionnaire was distributed to 46 private Palestinian firms operating in Ramallah from different sectors. The results revealed that the usage of financial measures is still high and ranked first among the four perspectives of the BSC measures. However, the usage of non-financial measures is growing. Only reliance on financial based performance measures is inadequate in the new manufacturing environment. Increase awareness of the importance of non financial performance measures in providing long-term value creation and long-term strategic focus as well as their effects on firm performance leads to several innovations in the area of performance measurement system. One of the widely known innovations in this area is called balanced scorecard (BSC) which has been originated by Kaplan and Norton in 1992. The BSC combines traditional financial measures with non-financial measures through focusing on four perspectives - financial, customers, internal business processes, and learning and growth.

"This remarkable anthology of 13 essays is a cross-cultural study on ecological anthropology, which examines the cultural construction of nature, human evaluation of environmental risks, and human action to mitigate such risks. The anthology persuasively critiques the privileging of Western rationality over culture-specific perspectives of environmental change... [It] stands alone for the geographical sweep of its contributions - from Europe, Asia, and Africa - and its disciplinary eclecticism, which draws deeply on anthropology, geography, psychology, ethnography, ethnology, and sociology... Essential." · ChoiceToday human ecology has split into many different sub-disciplines such as historical ecology, political ecology or the New Ecological Anthropology. The latter in particular has criticised the predominance of the Western view on different ecosystems, arguing that culture-specific world views and human-environment interactions have been largely neglected. However, these different perspectives only tackle specific facets of a local and global hyper-complex reality. In bringing together a variety of views and theoretical approaches , these especially commissioned essays prove that an interdisciplinary collaboration and understanding of the extreme complexity of the human-environment interface(s) is possible.Michael J. The issue of employee job performance is crucial to every manager, organization and government. A plethora of factors have been identified to influence an employee's productivity; but this study, carried out among civil servants as opposed to employees in private firms and organizations in Lagos state, identified and explored three factors that impact on employees job performance such as behavioural pattern, self-esteem and work environment. There was a combined contribution of self-esteem and work environment on job performance while behavioural pattern was the least predictor. This work, therefore, provides a new vista to understanding how the three identified variables interact with job performance. Stratified and simple random sampling was employed to select the participants from four government ministries. A survey questionnaire made up of four trajectories was used to collect all the data for the study. The conclusion should help managers, especially in public work-space to appreciate the various factors that may impact both positively and negatively on an employee's job performance.

Scientific Study from the year 2008 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: B, , 69 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Health, environment and poverty are closely interrelated and inseparable, particularly in developing countries. WHO estimates that environmental factors are the root cause of 25% of the total burden of disease worldwide and account for about 35% in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Effective environmental management is the key to avoiding a quarter of all preventable illnesses which are directly caused by environmental factors. In the Bibiani-Bekwai and Sefwi Wiawso Districts of the Western Region of Ghana, the environment has been altered by complex human induced factors, which have negatively impacted on the health of the population. This paper seeks to establish the major causes of environmental and human health degradation and whether there is a direct link between environmental degradation and human health in Bibiani-Bekwai and the Sefwi Wiawso Districts in the Western Region of Ghana. Four complementary approaches were used during the investigation: extensive literature review, consultations with key informants, the administration of questionnaires, and stakeholder consultations. The data was analyzed using SPSS to establish the linkages between environmental deterioration and human health in the two districts. The results clearly suggest that environmental degradation seriously affects human health in the two districts. 80% of the ...

Examines effects of the environmental distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes on human health and the ecosystem Resistance genes are everywhere in nature—in pathogens, commensals, and environmental microorganisms. This contributed work shows how the environment plays a pivotal role in the development of antimicrobial resistance traits in bacteria and the distribution of resistant microbial species, resistant genetic material, and antibiotic compounds. Readers will discover the impact of the distribution in the environment of antimicrobial resistance genes and antibiotics on both the ecosystem and human and animal health. Antimicrobial Resistance in the Environment is divided into four parts: Part I, Sources, including ecological and clinical consequences of antibiotic resistance by environmental microbes Part II, Fate, including strategies to assess and minimize the biological risk of antibiotic resistance in the environment Part III, Antimicrobial Substances and Resistance, including antibiotics in the aquatic environment Part IV, Effects and Risks, including the effect of antimicrobials used for non-human purposes on human health Recognizing the intricate links among overlapping complex systems, this book examines antimicrobial resistance using a comprehensive ecosystem approach. Moreover, the book's multidisciplinary framework applies principles of microbiology, environmental toxicology, and chemistry to assess the human and ecological risks associated with exposure to antibiotics or antibiotic resistance genes that are environmental contaminants. Each chapter has been written by one or more leading researchers in such fields as microbiology, environmental science, ecology, and toxicology. Comprehensive reference lists at the end of all chapters serve as a gateway to the primary research in the field. Presenting and analyzing the latest findings in a field of growing importance to human and environmental health, this text offers readers new insights into the role of the environment in antimicrobial resistance development, the dissemination of antimicrobial resistant genetic elements, and the transport of antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotics.
