Social relationships play a central role in the evolution and development of human culture and cognition. Volume 39 of the Minnesota Symposium on Child Psychology (Development of the Social Brain) adresses the ontogeny and phylogeny of the social brain from multiple perspectives and levels of analysis. The chapters in this volume shed light on shared versus unique features of social information processing across different species, and sketch out some of the cognitive and neural mechanisms that underlie such processing. A collection of chapters from distinguished contibutors offer new insights into the unique nature of human development. Flexibly and efficiently navigating the complex dynamics of social interaction remains one of the remarkable achievements of human evolution. As life in social contexts evolved, so did information processing abilities that afforded new ways of interacting with others, emerging into what we now refer to as cultural cognition or cultural practices. The primary objective of the current volume was to consider phylogenetic and ontogenetic influence on specialized social information processing capactities. The volume brings together, for the first time, distinguished research scholars to consider central themes and principles associated with the development of the social brain. Readers will take away a fresh perspective on nature of human nature.

Drawing from extended fieldwork in La Réunion, in the Indian Ocean, the author suggests an innovative re-reading of different concepts of magic that emerge in the global cultural economics of tourism. Following the making and unmaking of the tropical island tourism destination of La Réunion, he demonstrates how destinations are transformed into magical pleasure gardens in which human life is cultivated for tourist consumption. Like a gardener would cultivate flowers, local development policy, nature conservation, and museum initiatives dramatise local social life so as to evoke modernist paradigms of time, beauty and nature. Islanders who live in this 'human garden' are thus placed in the ambivalent role of 'human flowers', embodying ideas of authenticity and biblical innocence, but also of history and social life in perpetual creolisation.

Social protection involves choices about whether the core principle behind social provisioning will be universal or selective through targeting. Extreme poverty is regarded as the world's greatest human rights issue. The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights starts from the idea that all human beings are born free and equal in status and rights. Under the international human rights law, States are legally obligated to establish social protection systems for their citizens, especially the vulnerable and at risk. Social protection in Ghana assumes three main targets for poverty reduction; the first target looks at labour market interventions in terms of employment services, job training, and direct employment generation. The second target deals with social insurance that targets risk mitigation, disability, ill health, old age, health insurance, and the third target is social assistance that provides welfare and social services, cash or in-kind transfers, and subsidies. The interventions under these targets are either universal or targeted. This study is concerned with the right base of social protection for OVC and examines the impact and challenges of some social protection interventions. For this purpose, three categories of participants made up of 53 OVC, Caregivers, SP interventions and institutions as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) were selected across the two townships of Wa and Jirapa for the study through systematic random sampling. Outstanding scholars in biology, genetics, neuroscience, cognitive science, philosophy, theology, biblical studies, and ethics join here to offer contemporary accounts of human nature consistent with Christian teaching. Their central theme is a nondualistic account of the human person that does not consider the "soul" an entity separable from the body; scientific statements about the physical nature of human beings are about exactly the same entity as are theological statements concerning the spiritual nature of human beings. For all those interested in fundamental questions of human identity posed by the present context, this volume will provide a fascinating and authoritative resource.

Maxine Sheets-Johnstone The Roots of Morality

This book argues the case for a foundationalist ethics centrally based on an empirical understanding of human nature. For Maxine Sheets-Johnstone, "an ethics formulated on the foundations of anything other than human nature, hence on anything other than an identification of pan-cultural human realities, lacks solid empirical moorings. It easily loses itself in isolated hypotheticals, reductionist scenarios, or theoretical abstractions-in the prisoner's dilemma, selfish genes, dedicated brain modules, evolutionary altruism, or psychological egoism, for example-or it easily becomes itself an ethical system over and above the ethics it formulates," such as the deontological ethics of Kantian categorical imperatives, the utilitarianism of Bentham and Mill, or the ethics of care.Taking her cue from Hume, especially his Treatise on Human Nature, where he grounds "the moral sense" in human nature seen as always in tension between the natural tendencies of selfish acquisitiveness and sympathy for others, Sheets-Johnstone pursues her phenomenological investigation of the natural basis of human morality by directing her attention, first in Part I, to what is traditionally considered the dark side of human nature, and then, in Part II, to the positive side. The tension between the two calls for an interdisciplinary therapeutic resolution, which she offers in the Epilogue by arguing for the value of a moral education that enlightens humans about their own human nature...

Does a manager in today's world need to know anything about freedom? Or about instrinsic goods? Or even about educating emotions? "Absolutely," says author Kemi Ogunyemi. Kemi wrote this book to serve as a valuable tool to complement courses on ethics, responsibility, leadership, human behavior in organizations, customer service, and sustainability-most of which tend to ignore their human nature dimensions. Inside, you'll be provided an indepth understanding of human nature and its uniqueness and complexity, which can greatly enhance your managerial skills for achieving business success in today's world. You will be empowered to better manage yourself, others, and the environment. This book also provides a foundation for developing ethical sensitivity and corporate social responsibility. There is a clear and present danger that managers may tend to focus primarily on financial success in different key dimensions-operational quality, financial strategy, workforce motivation, cost-cutting strategies, etc.-and perhaps discover too late the neglect of an even more vital dimension of all human endeavor. Future leaders and shapers of sustainable organizations and societies cannot afford to have such a knowledge gap.

What does it mean to be a scientist working today; specifically, a scientist whose subject matter is human life? Scientists often overstate their claim to certainty, sorting the world into categorical distinctions that obstruct rather than clarify its complexities. In this book Daniel Nettle urges the reader to unpick such distinctions—biological versus social sciences, mind versus body, and nature versus nurture—and look instead for the for puzzles and anomalies, the points of connection and overlap. These essays, converted from often humorous, sometimes autobiographical blog posts, form an extended meditation on the possibilities and frustrations of the life scientific.Pragmatically arguing from the intersection between social and biological sciences, Nettle reappraises the virtues of policy initiatives such as Universal Basic Income and income redistribution, highlighting the traps researchers and politicians are liable to encounter. This provocative, intelligent and self-critical volume is a testament to the possibilities of interdisciplinary study—whose virtues Nettle stridently defends—drawing from and having implications for a wide cross-section of academic inquiry. This will appeal to anybody curious about the implications of social and biological sciences for increasingly topical political concerns. It comes particularly recommended to Sciences and Social Sciences students and to scholars seeking to extend the scope of their field in collaboration with other discipli...

In this third book, Luzi looks into our connection to nature and gets a deeper understanding of life, nature, the planet and creation itself. This connection is initially established with a consciousness that appears as the human concept of the Unicorn. The horn is not really a horn, but a swirl of energy or, more precisely, a point of consciousness for communication to consciousness and energy. This point is widely misunderstood to be the third eye, as people imagine it to connect to the visual cortex for creating images. When Luzi visits the twenty-two crystal caves, she encounters the new energy that may benefit the one who has the consciousness to tap into it.Luzi’s perspective is the artificial intelligence, AI, robotics and augmentation and evolution of the human body, and how humanity will live with these things. Her daughter, Julia, focuses on the human coalition with the planet and the imbalance between the feminine and the masculine.Divine wisdom is given through the unicorn, Alea, the white dragon, Loong, the crimson dragon, Shaumbra, Gaia, Pan, Kuthumi, Saint Germain, Sekhmet and others. Luzi will connect to her own divine wisdom as she continues on her journey for embodied realisation, also called enlightenment.Even though the book is part of a series, this is a complete story in its own right.

Shanon Kearney Lessard Urban Agriculture Facilitates Community Building

In her book, Lessard explains that communities ideally need four different kinds of capital to succeed: economic, social, environmental, and human. Lessard argues that all four kinds of capital must be developed simultaneously for optimal success, and that urban agriculture can facilitate this need. Furthermore, Lessard contends, urban planners must consider these needs and develop plans that incorporate space for community gardens, which add long-term value to land, restore natural spaces in urban areas, benefit residents by offering affordable local food, and in general improve the lives of residents and the health of the community by encouraging people to become more engaged and active. Additionally, Lessard concludes, community gardens encourage the building of social networks that allow for the sharing of multicultural and multigenerational values, thereby uniting the larger community and making residents feel more invested over the long term.

"Back to Nature and Breathing" by Nhu Nguyen, is a wonderful handbook bearing her dream. It is a simple dream with a simple method; that humans will escape the pain of illness, live without depression, and be truly happy every moment of their lives."Back to Nature" is the translation of Vietnamese words "Hoan Nhien," a theory of Vietnamese qigong training to achieve a good life in both mental and physical fields. This theory has been handed down from generation to generation in Viet Nam.“Hoan” means return, to be back. Attune. “Nhien” means nature. “Hoan Nhien” means “Back to Nature,” attune to the flow of Nature's energy; Heaven and Earth. “Back to Nature” is a way of living, for a normal life of each person. “Back to Nature” is a way of training in order to attain a peaceful life for the whole Body and Mind. “Back to Nature” is a way to activate a natural healing source hidden in the human connection to natural energy while training the body and soul, aiming at recovering the living force of body and soul that been exhausted by time.Heaven, Human, and Earth are basic elements of the philosophy of life of Vietnamese Ancestors. The Primate Origins of Human Nature (Volume 3 in The Foundations of Human Biology series) blends several elements from evolutionary biology as applied to primate behavioral ecology and primate psychology, classical physical anthropology and evolutionary psychology of humans. However, unlike similar books, it strives to define the human species relative to our living and extinct relatives, and thus highlights uniquely derived human features. The book features a truly multi-disciplinary, multi-theory, and comparative species approach to subjects not usually presented in textbooks focused on humans, such as the evolution of culture, life history, parenting, and social organization.

Today's elementary schools are generally inflexible and uninspiring places for learning that are disconnected from their community and nature. Facilities and teaching methods do not keep up with evolving workforce needs and varying learning styles (Stanbury 2009). Organized sports, limited free time and standardized testing steal the zest out of childhood discovery once felt by those who grew up with a connection to their surroundings, especially nature. Adverse effects are seen as a result. "Nature-deficit disorder describes the human costs of alienation from nature, among them: diminished use of the senses, attention disorders and higher rates of physical and emotional illnesses," (Louv 2008, 36). Children are left to face the world's escalating dilemmas with hindered social and cognitive skills, diseases related to association and disassociation from nature and impaired community relationships. Integrating Learning Landscapes with the Collaborative for High Performance Schools to create a Hybrid Learning Landscape Framework will create a holistic high performance school system that utilizes the interior and exterior school environment for comprehensive learning and play.

Project Report from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Communication, grade: A, The Hague University, course: Master in International Communication, language: English, abstract: When students are traveling to study abroad, they may face different issues such as loneliness, isolation, discrimination that may affect their academic performance and cause stress and mental health problems directly or indirectly.Di Tommaso and Spinner found out that integration into social networks is the best predictor of lower levels of social loneliness. Universities provide support for international students and it is intended to facilitate an optimal (from the point of view of the universities) academic and social adjustment, however, causing boring and lonely social life 'outside the classroom' and feeling a lack of belonging contribute to their sense of alienation in the host society.Due to the heavy study load and stress and because of lack of time, international students tend to have more in-door activities. Because of the developed technologies and internet, most of them prefer to communicate through social media: especially when they encounter problems in their daily life, they tend to search solutions via social channels on internet. Moreover, the media channels that The Hague University of Applied Sciences (hereinafter HHS) uses now seems not to be adequate for integration. HHS uses media tools such as blackboard and emails to communicate with the students, and students co...

Corporate Social Responsibility is becoming ever more important in these challenging economic times. Real prosperity requires a combination of economic development with social generosity and demands a new approach towards social and managerial engagement.Mergers and acquisitions are typically complex in nature and have to be seen from a wider perspective that takes into account not just business, but also social, human and cultural dimensions as well. The right strategic approach and regard for Corporate Social Responsibility are important preconditions for a successful merger. The fulfilment of these preconditions can create greater shareholder value and strengthen Corporate Social Responsibility. Acting as a responsible corporate citizen does pay off, and the "syndrome of selfishness" can be overcome - at least partly.

Medicine and social sciences are concerned in their own special way with human behavior. The term ‘social sciences’ is applied to those disciplines which are committed to the scientific examination of human behaviour. These are economics, political science, sociology, social psychology and social anthropology. The term ‘behavioural sciences’ is applied to the last three, i.e. , sociology, social psychology and social anthropology, because they deal directly with human behaviour.

Facebook, Twitter, Google…today's tech-savvy students are always plugged in. However, all too often their teachers and administrators aren't experienced in the use of these familiar digital tools. If schools are to prepare students for the future, administrators and educators must harness the power of digital technologies and social media. With contributions from authorities on the topic of educational technology, What School Leaders Need to Know About Digital Technologies and Social Media is a compendium of the most useful tools for any education setting. Throughout the book, experts including Will Richardson, Vicki Davis, Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach, Richard Byrne, Joyce Valenza, and many others explain how administrators and teachers can best integrate technology into schools, helping to make sense of the often-confusing world of social media and digital tools. They offer the most current information for the educational use of blogs, wikis and podcasts, online learning, open-source courseware, educational gaming, social networking, online mind mapping, mobile phones, and more, and include examples of these methods currently at work in schools. As the book clearly illustrates, when these tools are combined with thoughtful and deliberate pedagogical practice, it can create a transformative experience for students, educators, and administrators alike. What School Leaders Need to Know About Digital Technologies and Social Media reveals the power of information technology and social networks in the classroom and throughout the education community.

Mary Douglas's innovative explanations for styles of human thought and for the dynamics of institutional change have furnished a distinctive and powerful theory of how conflicts are managed, yet her work remains astonishingly poorly appreciated in social science disciplines. This volume introduces Douglas's theories, and outlines the ways in which her work is of continuing importance for the future of the social sciences. Mary Douglas: Explaining Human Thought and Conflict shows how Douglas laid out the agenda for revitalizing social science by reworking Durkheim's legacy for today, and reviews the growing body of research across the social sciences which has used, tested or developed her approach.

The rapid advancement of technology has fueled fast-paced change in business, creating a high-performance culture that requires leaders to be resilient, agile and results-focused. But the increased level of uncertainty and an ever-expanding workload often create stress, overwhelm, fear and polarization, leading to disconnection. The world never stops, and when people get caught in the same trap they risk burning out. In Leading Through Uncertainty, leadership expert Jude Jennison explores the challenges leaders face as human beings in a technological world, the new habits and behaviours they need to adopt to re-connect on a human to human basis, and the leadership qualities they need to lead through uncertainty. This is a call to return to the core of humanity to find the natural human characteristics of communication, connection, compassion and community, drawing on the experience of working with a herd of horses to understand the impact of non-verbal communication on leadership.

Human resource is the most important asset of any organization and, unlike other resources, human resources can theoretically be developed and increased to a limitless extent. Human resources mean the energies, skills, knowledge and physical strength of the people at work. Human resources comprise the value of the productive capacity of the entire work force of any organization. To be specific and brief, human resource refers to the aggregate of knowledge, skill, experience and health of employees working in any organization. Development of human resources accounts for the development of the human side of an organization. Today, management is absolutely essential for all organizations, irrespective of their origin, nature and ownership. Every enterprise, established with a profit-seeking motive or some social, religious or other purposes, requires efficient management for its sustained progress. But management has been viewed differently by various scholars, depending upon their belief and comprehensions. Some regard it as the force that runs a business and is responsible for its success or failure. Others perceive it as a means for achievement of desired results through group efforts and by utilising both human and non-human resources. Still others deem management to be a process comprising planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling. Also, some look at it as an instrument for designing and maintaining an environment conducive to the performance of individuals ...
