In this book a novel model for power consuming in the mixed signal system is presented. In the proposed model a power profile of the mixed signal versus frequency is shown and the impacts of the analog and the digital sub sections are determined. The presented model is applied on the 6 bit SARADC. A primary low power 6 bit SARADC is designed for WSN applications. Presented model shows that the impact of analog section in the lower range of frequencies is more than digital section. Optimizing this block, results in over 100% power consumption reduction in the optimized SAR ADC.

In this thesis work we design and optimize a 8-bit pipelined ADC for low-power. The ADC has stage resolution of 1.5-bit and employ current mode multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC). The main focus is to design and optimize the MDAC. We design and optimize the MDAC circuit for the best possible effective number of bits (ENOB), speed and power consumption. Each of the first six stages consisting of Sample-and-Hold, 1.5-bit flash ADC and MDAC is realized at the circuit level. The last stage consisting of 2-bit flash ADC is also realized at circuit level. The delay logic for synchronization is implemented in Verilog-A and MATLAB. A first order digital error-correction algorithm is implemented in MATLAB. The design is simulated in UMC 0.18μm technology in Cadence environment.

For modern biomedical implantable devices, lowering power consumption as much as possible is critical to extend the active time of the battery, which is not feasable to be replaced frequently. Introduced in the 1950s, implantable cardiac pacemakers are used to treat bradyarrhythmia. For a pacemaker, long (over 15 years) service time is the most critical design objective. Analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is an indispensable module in any pacemaker. The book presents the design of a low-power CMOS Sigma-Delta (ΣΔ) modulator, which can be employed for implementation of the ADC. The entire design process, from system definition and synthesis to transistor-level circuit implementation, is elaborated. Important design considerations are also discussed in each design phase. This book can serve as a quick and detailed top-down design guide for the readers who are interested in the area, as well as for the university students who are in the early stage of their research.

As technology is continuously scaling down leakage current is increasing exponentially. Contribution of leakage current is around 50% to the total operational power of digital circuits. With increasing demand of portable battery operated devices like cell phones, pagers and laptops, low power design has become important design style for future battery powered devices. This exponential increase in leakage power has made Multi-Threshold CMOS (MTCMOS) technique an attractive design choice for low power application. Conventional MTCMOS techniques for minimizing leakage current gives rise to ground bounce noise during mode transition which is also an important challenge and reduces the reliability of the circuit. In this work different multi-threshold CMOS techniques have been presented and compared which uses the concept of forward body biasing, diode connected MOS, ultra low power diode and signal stepping.Proposed designs has shown significant improvement in ground bounce noise and standby leakage current as compared to designs proposed in past.

Low power, high speed binary multiplier is an essential component of digital computers. Many architectures of multiplier based on Booth multiplication and array multiplication algorithms have been implemented. The array multiplier using Wallace tree structure is reported to be fastest and requiring minimum hardware. The speed of a binary multiplier is dominantly determined by the speed of adders used in the multiplier. This work describes a new 20-transistor low power high speed hybrid CMOS full adder and a new carry skip adder suitable for use in multipliers. A new modular design method for design of n x n multipliers using Vedic algorithm for multiplication has been proposed. The proposed design method uses more number of gates than array multiplier using Wallace tree but offers the advantages of simple and systematic interconnection scheme and maximum design reuse.

A unique, practical approach to the design of high-speed digital circuit boards The demand for ever-faster digital circuit designs is beginning to render the circuit theory used by engineers ineffective. Digital Circuit Boards presents an alternative to the circuit theory approach, emphasizing energy flow rather than just signal interconnection to explain logic circuit behavior. The book shows how treating design in terms of transmission lines will ensure that the logic will function, addressing both storage and movement of electrical energy on these lines. It covers transmission lines in all forms to illustrate how trace geometry defines where the signals can travel, then goes on to examine transmission lines as energy sources, the true nature of decoupling, types of resonances, ground bounce, cross talk, and more. Providing designers with the tools they need to lay out digital circuit boards for fast logic and to get designs working the first time around, Digital Circuit Boards: Reviews in simple terms the basic physics necessary to understand fast logic design Debunks the idea that electrical conductors carry power and signals, showing that signal travels in the spaces, not the traces, of circuit boards Explains logic circuit behavior through real-time analysis involving the fields and waves that carry signal and energy Provides new information on how ground/power planes work Outlines a software program for solving energy flow in complex networks

With the ongoing trend towards low-voltage and low-power operation, the area of analog integrated filters is facing serious challenges. Consequently, noise analysis becomes essential in designing translinear circuits, or in general, log-domain filters. Due to the inherited companding behaviour and nonstationary nature of the translinear noise sources, an efficient nonlinear noise analysis method is necessary. This work is to present several noise analysis methods for translinear circuits. Based on the large-signal calculation, the first-order noise and signal-noise intermodulation of static and dynamic translinear circuits are calculated on the basis of existing current-mode analysis methods. Then, two important noise specifications, power spectral density and signal-to-noise ratio, are specified. For dynamic translinear circuits, two methods, either combining noise sources and moving them to output, or process them in situ and individually, are elaborated. Through these methods, we can start noise analysis at early design stage, to ensure good performance. Therefore, this work should be useful to professionals in circuit design and troubleshooting.

Whether in a solar thermal power plant or at the heart of a nuclear reactor, convection is an important mode of energy transfer. This mode is unique; it obeys specific rules and correlations that constitute one of the bases of equipment-sizing equations. In addition to standard aspects of convention, this book examines transfers at very high temperatures where, in order to ensure the efficient transfer of energy for industrial applications, it is becoming necessary to use particular heat carriers, such as molten salts, liquid metals or nanofluids. With modern technologies, these situations are becoming more frequent, requiring appropriate consideration in design calculations. Energy Transfers by Convection also studies the sizing of electronic heat sinks used to ensure the dissipation of heat and thus the optimal operation of circuit boards used in telecommunications, audio equipment, avionics and computers.

Arterial stiffness increases cardiovascular disease risk for stroke, myocardial infarction, and mortality. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of resistance exercise intensity on arterial stiffness and blood pressure. Two resistance exercise conditions, low and high intensity, were compared. In a longitudinal, cross-over study design, thirty-two subjects (n=32, 17 male, mean age= 24.6) completed both conditions on separate days. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was used as a measure of central and peripheral arterial stiffness at baseline, at 15 minutes post, and at 30 minutes post exercise. Central PWV increased in the low mode and returned toward baseline at 30 minutes post-exercise (p<0.05). Central PWV did not change in the high mode. Peripheral PWV increased in the low mode and remained elevated at 30 minutes post-exercise (p<0.05). Peripheral PWV did not change in the high mode. Mean blood pressure (MAP) (p<.05) decreased following low but did not change following high (p<.05). Neither low nor high had any effect on indices of heart rate variability. These findings suggest that exercise intensity has differential effects on blood pressure and arterial stiffness.
