Kordula Pfeiffer Volatile Rice Prices

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Department of Agricultural Economics), course: Open Economy Macroeconomics and International Agricultural Trade, language: English, abstract: This paper describes the impacts of rice price fluctuations and price shocks due to crises on domestic households in Indonesia. In the long term the country was able to reduce poverty and undernourishment, because of its steady and strong economic growth.A typical household spends nearly half of its total food intake on rice. Therefore, high rice prices make especially the poor vulnerable to price increases. In order to estimate how and to which extend rice price volatility affects demand, the daily calorie intake is focused with regard to a price increase of 10 % and 30 %.Based on the assumption that people are food insecure a total calorie intake of 2,100 calories/day/person is taken into account as poverty line. Usually households consume less rice if the price is on a higher level. In Indonesia richer households have a more price-elastic demand if rice prices increases than poor households. On the contrary, those who are net consumers or producers of rice as well as governmental supported poor households have a relatively price-inelastic demand for rice. This fact is different for households which differ in income level and location. This paper comes up with the conclusion that for rich urban households rice is a Giffe...

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: A, , course: Agric Economics, language: English, abstract: This study examined the dynamism of price movement between markets and its implication on pricing efficiency in maize markets. Primary data were collected using interview guides. A total of 240 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling technique in 6 rural and 6 urban markets in Ogun State. Weekly retail prices of yellow and white maize for five years (January 1999-December 2003) were analysed using the Bivariate Cointegration test and the Granger causality test to detect the presence and level of price integration. In Ogun State, domestic production of maize increased by 9 percent a year between 1990 - 2001. Although the growth in maize production may be attributed to cultivating more crop area and/or the adoption of improved open pollinated and hybrid maize varieties which provide the major stimulus for increased yield on the average. Annual growth rate of maize yields was 9.08 percent during 1990 - 2001. Most of the growth came from yellow maize, which increased at 8.92 percent annually, compared with 3.57 percent for white maize. In comparison with other states in South-West however, the Ogun state average yield of 1.41 metric tons per hectare is the lowest.i. How integrated are the maize markets in the study area?ii. Njeru Peterson, Hjalten Joakim, K. The Effect of Push-Pull Management and Fertilization in Central Kenya

The high population pressure in central Kenya has lead to continuous cultivation with minimal application of nutrient, resulting in nutrient depletion. A study was conducted to determine the effect of 'Push-pull' (intercropping maize with Desmodium and Napier grass) strategy management and nitrogen application on maize grain yield and soil fertility on smallholder farmer's fields in three districts of central Kenya highlands. The experiment design was a split plot design with two factors ('Push-pull' vs monoculture and manure (5 t/ha) only vs manure and fertilizer (40 kg/ha) replicated four times.I found an increase in maize yield in 'Push-pull' fields compared with monocultures with only manure added (5t/ha) and the yield increased even more with modest application of fertilizer (40KgN/ha) combined with manure (5t/ha).There was strong significant difference (p<0.001) on maize grain yield between 'Push-pull' (5.52t/ha) and monoculture (1.93t/ha) cropping systems in the three districts of central Kenya. From management perspective, the different fertilization regimes had strongest positive effect on maize yield in well managed 'Push-pull' cropping systems.

Vivekanandhini A., Jagannathan R., Previna S. Sources sink relationship in hybrid maize (Zeamays L.)

Maize is one of the most important cereal crops in the World's agricultural economy both as food for humans and feed for animals and poultry. Maize is known as "Queen of Cereals" due to its higher yield potential compared to other cereals. In India it is the third most important food crop after rice and wheat. The demand for maize is increasing day by day in India, owing to the increased demand for poultry and cattle feed and for the same reason it is also emerging as an important cereal crop in India. In crop plants, the physiological basis of dry matter production is dependent on the source-sink concept, where the source is the potential capacity for photosynthesis and the sink is the potential capacity to utilize the photosynthetic products. Hence, for improving attainable crop yields the knowledge of yield forming physiological processes such as source-sink relationships is required. Many studies have been conducted on source-sink relationship in different crops including maize to understand this phenomenon towards maneuvering such crops. Since, maize being the sink limiting crop, it is important to study the source-sink relationship to improve the sink capacity and maize yield

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereals next to rice and wheat, in the world as well in India. It is one of the most versatile crops and can be grown in diverse environmental conditions and has diversified uses in human food and animal feed. It has got immense potential and is therefore called as "miracle crop" and also "queen of cereals". The crop occupies third place among the cereals and it is cultivated over an area of 7.59 million ha with a production of 14.71 million tonnes and the average productivity is 1938 kg /ha.In Tamil Nadu, it occupies an area of 0.20 million hectares with a production of 0.24 million tonnes and an average productivity of 1189 kg/ ha. maize growers face specific problems in marketing because the feed industries procure maize through private agencies like village merchants, middlemen problem etc. In order to help the maize growers to overcome the constraints social studies are required ultimately. In this regard the present study is contemplated.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1.0, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, language: English, abstract: That financial markets can influence real economic activity has been accepted by economists long ago and became dramatically apparent again in the last financial crisis, when the sharp decline in housing prices in the US was followed by a severe recession. In general, asset prices are determined in a forward-looking manner, stock prices for example reflect the expected profitability of firms in the future and thus are linked to expected future economic conditions. Furthermore, many macroeconomic models suggested by economic theory in-corporate interest rates, interest spreads or exchange rates, which can be seen as some sort of financial assets, and believing in these models means believing that asset prices influence developments of macroeconomic v ariables in the future. These considerations and observations gave rise to examine the pre-dictive power of asset prices to forecast output and inflation and a survey of this literature as well as empirical tests for a variety of predictors in different countries can be found e.g. in Stock and Watson (2003).

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,3, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Institut für Ökologische Ökonomie), language: English, abstract: Food prices - particularly prices of agricultural commodities used as a feedstock for biofuel production - have reached record highs in 2008. Within a period of slightly more than two years prices for staple food such as corn, soy, wheat, and vegetable oils have more than doubled. This price acceleration occurred at a time of surging crude oil prices and a rapid expansion of biofuel production, which relied nearly exclusively on feedstock from food crops. Consequently, the market development has triggered a controversial debate on the question whether the increase of agricultural prices in line with crude oil prices is a mere coincidence, due to stock market speculation, or result of a lasting integration of the agricultural and the energy sector. In the light of these uncertainties on an issue that could have a strong impact on global producers and consumers of food - particularly those in developing countries - the objective of this study is to analyse under which conditions agricultural commodity and crude oil markets could be linked in the future and in how far an integration of markets would affect developing countries. The dissertation is divided into three parts: Part I analyses under which conditions prices i...

Etienne Jungbluth Is the Value of the US Dollar Driving Oil Prices.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 80, University of Edinburgh, language: English, abstract: As an invoice currency the US dollar is frequently cited to cause changes in real oil prices through a demand and supply channel. The aim of this paper is to shed more light on whether the US dollar is driving oil prices. In order to do so, we incorporate the bivariate relationship in a broader demand and supply framework in which real oil prices are determined by demand and supply factors. We find cointegration among the variables involved and that the value of the US dollar is a significant part in the long-run relationship. The causal links within the long-run relationship are examined using the procedure suggested by Toda & Yamamoto (1995) to test for Granger causality in the presence of I(1) variables. The results show that no causal effect of the US dollar on oil prices can be found. This contradicts the view that the US dollar is driving real oil prices. There is even evidence that none of the fundamentals is causing real oil prices. Moreover, real oil prices are found to have an indirect causal effect on the US dollar. This contradicts standard models such as the Krugman (1983) model which suggest a direct link.

Hence, the exploration of alternate sources of K nutrition of maize is highly crucial for sustainable maize production. This study evaluates the efficacy of a novel organic K fertilizer, developed from fruits and vegetables wastes, in enhancing the growth and biomass production of maize.

Ruming Li Genetics on Resistance to Maize Kernel Infection by Aspergillus Flavus

Maize kernel infection by Aspergillus flavus and later aflatoxin contaminatuion are worldwide problems in production and storage. Genetic resistance to A. flavus is most cost-effective to minimize the loss to kernels. To study the inheritance of A. flavus resistance, maize diallel and half-sib family crosses were made and genetic effects analyzed for percent kernel infection (PKI) rates using MIKI. Highly significant GCA, SCA and reciprocal effects were found. Two parents had desirable GCA effects on enhancing the average resistance performance in hybrid progeny. Three crosses had consistently negative SCA effects over year. They revealed that genetic resistance to kernel infection by A. flavus existed in maize and was identifiable and exploitable. Both diallel and half-sib analyses agreed and confirmed genotypic, additive and dominance effects. Lab-based PKI compared with the field-based demonstrated that it was more effective in screening for resistant maize germplasm. This study is instructive to breeders, geneticists, and pathologists in that these methods can be realistic solutions to identifying desired genes and breeding for genetic resistance.

Uganda like many low income countries still struggles to provide health care for a significant proportion of the population despite enacting several policies and embarking on different economic reforms. A large number of people are facing catastrophic expenditures as they seek good and better health leading them into dire poverty. There is dis-proportionality between the country's burden of disease and the finances available to take care of it. Analyzing Uganda's health financing policies and system is a necessary initial step for improving its situation; it identifies the policy and practice gaps, which is necessary in making an optimum and relevant choice of reforms. This book initially contextualizes health financing in low income countries and then looks at the status of the health system in Uganda. These two chapters form a basis for the analysis of the health financing system of Uganda that follows thereafter. It concludes by drawing some lessons and recommendations for Uganda.

Mhembere Oliver Genetic Studies of Phaeosphaeria Leaf Spot Resistance in Maize

Genetic studies and technological edge on maize are increasingly advancing since the turn of the decade. This has come as a result of the increasing threat of pests and diseases in maize producing regions of the world. This book provides a new metric to the fungal disease, Phaeosphaeria leaf spot that has seen increased incidence and severity of epidemics in these growing areas. The author explores the inheritance of the disease and the combining ability of other secondary traits like early maturity in germplasm adaptable to Southern Africa. Thus the book confirms that phaeosphaeria leaf is a highly heritable disease combined with additive gene action and earliness is a moderately heritable trait. Hence, scientists, maize breeding houses and students will be able to fix resistance in their line breeding programs using novel methodologies and technologies that include marker assisted selection and recurrent selection, to generate resistant commercial hybrids. Finally, the general and specific combining abilities of phaeosphaeria leaf spot and other secondary maize traits are further discussed.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Mathematics - Analysis, grade: A, , course: MSC Pure mathematics, language: English, abstract: In this study, the author has investigated the absolutely continuous spectrum of a fourth order self-adjoint extension operator of minimal operator generated by difference equation defined on a weighted Hilbert space with the weight function w(t) > 0, t ∈ N where p(t), q(t), r(t) and m(t) are real-valued functions. The author has applied the M-matrix theory as developed in Hinton and Shaw in order to compute the spectral multiplicity and the location of the absolutely continuous spectrum of self-adjoint extension operator. These results have been an extension of some known spectral results of fourth order differential operators to difference setting. Similarly, they have extended results found in Jacobi matrices. In this thesis, chapter 1 is about introduction and some preliminary results including literature review, objectives, methodology and basic definitions. In chapter 2, the author has given the results on the computation of the eigenvalues, dichotomy conditions and some results on singular continuous spectrum. Chapter 3 contains the main results in deficiency indices, absolutely continuous spectrum and the spectral multiplicity. Finally, the author has summarized his results in chapter 4 and also highlighted areas of further research.

Generally, books on mathematical statistics are restricted to the case of independent identically distributed random variables. In this book however, both this case AND the case of dependent variables, i.e. statistics for discrete and continuous time processes, are studied. This second case is very important for today’s practitioners. Mathematical Statistics and Stochastic Processes is based on decision theory and asymptotic statistics and contains up-to-date information on the relevant topics of theory of probability, estimation, confidence intervals, non-parametric statistics and robustness, second-order processes in discrete and continuous time and diffusion processes, statistics for discrete and continuous time processes, statistical prediction, and complements in probability. This book is aimed at students studying courses on probability with an emphasis on measure theory and for all practitioners who apply and use statistics and probability on a daily basis.

Njuguna Elijah, Calatayud Paul-andré Silicon in soil and maize. link with pests. distribution

Maize is the main staple crop in East African mountains but its yield is affected by biotic and abiotic factors. Lepidopteran pests such as, Chilo partellus (Crambidae) and Busseola fusca (Noctuidae) reduced maize yield while soil elements increase the yield. In addition to enhancing maize yields, some soil element such as silicon (Si) aid plants in overcoming abiotic and biotic stresses. Hence, any factor that induces Si deficiency in soil might be detrimental to the plant growth and its resistance to insect pests and diseases. Understanding how the projected temperature increase will affect Si levels in soil and maize is crucial in promoting maize production in different agro-ecosystems in the face of climate change. This study evaluated the Si levels in both soil and maize plants cultivated along three altitudinal gradients of East African mountains (Machakos, Taita and Kilimanjaro) characterized by graded changes in climatic conditions. The study also linked the Si level in maize plants to lepidopteran pests' distribution.

Peter Ouma Ochuodho, Mboya Kiweu Josephat Real Estate Prices Versus Economic Fundamentals. Nairobi-Kenya

The purpose of this research is to establish if the residential property prices in Nairobi city are consistent with the economic fundamentals. The study uses stepwise regression modelling to establish the relationship between house prices and the economic fundamentals. The findings of the study indicate that there is a positive relationship between house prices and economic fundamentals like population growth, rate of inflation and the level of money supply. Surprisingly, a negative relationship is found to exist between the costs of construction and the residential house prices. Other variables, which are the gross domestic product and rate of interest, are removed from the regression during analysis, an indication that they do not have any influence on the residential house prices. Further, the study finds that with exception of population growth, house prices' are less responsive to the variations in the rate of inflation and the level of money supply in the economy. A key finding in this study is that the house prices in Nairobi city are not supported by the gross domestic product, interest rate and the costs of construction.

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 3.5, Makerere University (College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences), course: Master of Science in Agribusiness Management, language: English, abstract: It is crucial that formulation of market enhancing policies to improve performance hinges on a better understanding of the local market functioning. Comprehensive market performance is better understood by studying the extent of spatial market integration which in turn is affected by communication factors like telephony growth and extension services within the marketing system. Extension services are important in influencing levels of production and dissemination of trade information of both the inputs to and output from the enterprise. Unfortunately very little was known about how rice price transmission takes place. Given the importance of rice (as a food security crop & source of income) to the rural poor, many organizations have promoted it among rural farmers for improving their welfare, it was imperative that its price movements is studied to inform policy makers & implementers on the status of its spatial market integration. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial market integration of rice markets under improving communication infrastructure particularly extension services (NAADS program) and telecommunication industry growth. This study specifically evaluated the degree of spatial market integratio...

Newcastle disease virus continues to be a threat to the poultry industry worldwide. The disease has become more pronounced in resource constrained households that rely on backyard poultry system as a source of income and animal protein particularly in under developed countries including Uganda. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Newcastle disease virus in apparently healthy birds, identify the Newcastle disease virus pathotypes and genotypes circulating in Uganda and to compare the regional distribution of these strains in live bird markets in Uganda. Six hundred fifty (each of cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs) samples were collected from live bird markets in all the regions of Uganda. The samples were processed and inoculated in 10-day old embryonated chicken eggs and incubated for 72 hours. Allantoic fluid was harvested and tested for the presence of Newcastle disease virus using hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition tests.

Tumwebaze Mathias Low deliveries in Health Centers of a resource poor country, Uganda

Low H/Center deliveries; Globally 56% of women deliver with a skilled attendant however; the rate is extremely lower in most African countries. Skilled attendance at delivery is a key indicator to measure the MDG goal to improve maternal health. While skilled attendance is nearly universal in Europe at 99.1%, in Africa the rate has only been rising by 0.2% per year for the past decade. At this rate, by the year 2015, the average skilled attendance in Africa will still be less than 50% implying that attaining MDG goal 5 by 2015 might remain a dream. This book is based on investigation of factors for low institutional deliveries in a resource poor country Uganda. It contributes invaluable information on health systems and community based factors that deter pregnant mothers from delivering in nearby health centers. Health workers perceptions and understanding of maternal health indicators, availability of adequate infrastructure and various social economic factors impact a lot on mother's decision on a place of delivery. This book is designed to benefit a wide range of PHC and R/Health planners, hospital administrators, policy makers and researchers especially in developing countries

Kato Peterson Kikomeko Realizing the Human Right to Adequate Food in slum Areas

The right to adequate food (RtF)is a human right of all people that emphasises freedom from hunger and malnutrition. It is internationally recognised by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural rights; both of which Uganda has ratified. This book assesses the RtF situation of slum dwellers of Banda Parish (one of the slums of Kampala City,Uganda)and shows that whereas Uganda is bound by international obligations on the RtF,slum dwellers are yet to realize this right. This is occuring against the background that the RtF is "fairly" protected by objectives XIV and XXII under the social and economic objectives of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. The assessment is based on agreed upon RtF indicators as reported in the project "Measurement Developments in the Realization of the Right to Food by Means of Indicators: The IBSA - Procedure". This book is generally intended for policy makers, civil society organizations, UN agencies, other humanitarian agencies, academicians and all individuals involved in advocating for the human right to adequate food.

Holger Löhr Price Parity Clauses on Internet Platform Markets

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 1,7, University of Marburg (Wirtschaftspolitik), course: Masterarbeit, language: English, abstract: Recent years have witnessed a remarkable increase in internet platform markets which have become the preferred venue of interaction amongst a growing number of buyers and sellers. The ability of the internet to enable sellers reach a greater number of consumers shows that there is a high potential for growth of the internet market, with effects on competition. Following a 2013 report by the German Antitrust Authority "Bundeskartellamt" on "Vertical Restraints on the Internet Economy", it is clear that the internet significantly reduces transaction costs and thus increases competition to the benefit of consumers. The increase in competition among sellers, producers and retailers has led to an adoption of different forms of vertical restrictions on internet platforms which have come under the scrutiny of antitrust authorities. This thesis aims to analyze vertical restraints on internet platform markets based on the investigation of Amazon.com, Inc. by the "Bundeskartellamt" for its use of a price parity clause. This clause was introduced in Germany and in the United Kingdom in 2010 in the contract between Amazon and sellers using its platform and prohibited them from setting lower prices on other platforms, including their own websites, than the prices they set on Amazon.

A. F. Mockler-Ferryman, Samuel Rice Officer of the West Yorks. the Napoleonic Wars with H.M. 51st Regiment-Corsica, 1794 to Waterloo, 1815

An essential British Army memoir from a regimental officerHistorian Mockler-Ferryman has taken the letters and papers of Sam Rice of H.M 51st regiment of foot and combined them with his own narrative of the life and times of a regimental officer of the British infantry during the Napoleonic epoch. Rice's career was an interesting one, though not untypical for his time. He remained a regimental officer within the same regiment for all of his career and this enables the reader to follow Rice and the West Yorks. through many campaigns of interest to students of the age of Napoleon. Rice saw action in Corsica, Ceylon and in the early stages of the war in Spain to the battle and evacuation at Corunna. Return to the Iberian peninsula brought him to Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca and the campaigns to the close of the war and the Emperors abdication. Rice was fated to meet the French once more on the slopes before Waterloo. Mockler-Ferryman brings vital context and added detail to the activities of Rice, his regiment and their role in great events. Recommended.

Walid Abu El-Soud Characterization of histone modifying enzymes and their substrates in maize

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2007 in the subject Chemistry - Bio-chemistry, grade: Doctorate, University of Innsbruck (Institute of Molecular Biology), language: English, abstract: The maize ZmHda1 is a class II, HDA1-like histone deacetylase. ZmHda1 has been purified to homogeneity and found to be a 48 kDa monomeric protein (Brosch et al., 1996a). However, ZmHda1 specific antibodies can detect two other protein bands of molecular sizes of 84 and 65 kDa on immunoblots indicating that ZmHda1 exists natively in different molecular forms. These two protein forms of ZmHda1 are found in protein complexes of high molecular weights and they are enzymatically inactive (Pipal et al., 2003). Attempts to identify the protein components of the ZmHda1 protein complexes have been made. The second part of this study showed that histone methylation profile in maize embryos quantitatively and qualitatively changes as the germination progresses from 0 to 72 h. The total and chromatin unbound HMT activity decrease during the germination progress, while the chromatin bound HMT activity increases. This increase was most remarkable as an increase in methylation of H4K20 residue and to a lesser extent in mono- and tri- methylated H3K9 and dimethylated H3K36. With the progress of germination, the decrease in dimethylated H3K9 was remarkable. The decrease in H3K4 methylation and dimethylated H4R3 was less pronounced. Seven different histone methyltransferase activities could be separa...

The study on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the livestock-producing communities of Uganda was carried out in Kashumba and Moyo sub counties. There was no clear data that supported the impact of HIV/AIDS on livestock producing communities on labour, decision-making, grazing and watering time and factors that aggravated its effects. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation guides and review of secondary data. The study showed that there was reduction in the availability of labour for grazing and watering livestock in both Moyo and Kashumba; There was shift in decision-making and implementation from ailing household heads to selected household members. There was significant negative changes in livestock grazing and sale of livestock products in households affected by HIV/AIDS compared to those non affected. Furthermore, there was reduction in grazing and watering time for livestock activities. It was observed that daily animal source foods reduced in the affected households. The study recommended that HIV/AIDS mitigation measures be intergrated in the livestock sector plans that will create HIV/AIDS competent communities in Uganda.
