Solid waste management, in addition to technical management, is prioritized in community management where urban population densities have grown to levels that induce solid waste management pressures. A reasonable fraction of municipal solid wastes can be recycled at the source or temporary disposal facilities. Composting program for solid waste management is recently intensified in many big cities of Java that promote the use of compost. There is good potential for large-scale composting that needs good compost quality: stable and mature, to improve the management of municipal solid waste. The remaining fraction of solid waste can be managed mostly through disposal in landfills. Following final disposal, biodegradable solid waste is transformed into leachate, which should be treated to prevent negative impact towards living organisms and ecosystem. This monograph is valuable sources for sanitary engineers and other professionals, governments, politicians and other non-government organizations as well as public communities. It is also addressed to students who are preparing for professional careers in solid waste management.

Rapid industrialization, urbanization and population growth Management of solid waste in India's growing urban areas is a challenging problem. Current practices of unscientific dumping of domestic waste have created serious environmental and public health concerns. This study attempts to study municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh- Lucknow, by a primary survey of 150 households segregated on the basis of income and settlement profile The entire study area was divided as a (low income group), B (medium income group) and (high income group) as the living standard goes up consumption of paper and plastic also goes up. So, quantity of solid waste increases in higher societies. Prevailing scenario of waste handling practices & disposal is an alarming problem encountered by many of the urban & industrial area. Thus an integrated solid waste management in sustainable approach is presented as response to necessary waste management strategy needs therefore efforts should be made by active participation of community, public & private agencies to solve this problem.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, grade: 3.83, Bahir Dar University, language: English, abstract: Solid waste management is becoming a major public health and environmental concern in urban areas of many developing countries, including Ethiopia. Bahir Dar is one of the cities in the country for which solid waste management is a problem. The main objective of the study is to investigate the challenges and prospects of public participation in solid waste management. The study area has nine sub cities. Simple random sampling was used to select two subcities and one zone from each selected subcity. Finally, systematic random sampling was used to select 271 respondents. The survey data was collected by using structured interview. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussion and observation. Descriptive statistics, ttest and chi-square test were used to determine an association between the dependent variable and the explanatory variables. The ordered logistic regression model was used to identify major factors that affect public participation in solid waste management. The survey result showed that the community can play a great role for better management of solid wastes by putting wastes in containers (38%), participate in waste management activities (34%), pay money for waste collectors (21%) and sorting wastes (7%). The Tin Ore obtained from the mine site is beneficiated into Tin concentrate, middling and Tin tailings. Tin tailings are collected as a waste from the process; this waste consists of about 25% of the total weight of Ore. The Tin tailings are disposed off in a secluded area and become wasted along river banks and farm lands or in mined out holes or they are poured on the top of slopes. Based on economics as well as environmental related issues, enormous efforts have been directed worldwide towards tin tailings management issues. Different avenues of tin tailings utilization are more or less known but none of them have so far proved to be economically viable or commercially feasible. Until now, there is no work on the economic value of this waste for industrials application. The author looks at possibility of using these industrial wastes from the mineral processing industry for the production of refractory materials. The author concluded that this industrial waste has refractory properties that can be compared favouraly with Indian fire clay refractory. Hence, this waste can be employed in refractory bricks production for furnace lining.

The overall objective of the study was to introduce economically feasible, technically acceptable and environmentally friendly biogas plant to the farming community and other potential users in Ethiopia. The research was carried on two types of biogas plants of 3m3 capacity (1) geo-membrane plastic (two single and two double layered) biogas plants constructed below and above the ground surface and (2) fixed-dome biogas plant. Each bio-digesters was fed with a mixture of 75Kg of cow-dung and 75Kg pure water at equal volume and proportion. Amount of gas and slurry were measured using calibrated biogas burner and weight balance respectively. The quality of the slurry (i.e. total-N and organic matter content) were analyzed in the laboratory using Kjeldahl and ash method respectively. The bio-digesters were compared after gas has completely produced at the end of 40 days of fermentation with respect to amount of gas and slurry produced, quality of slurry in terms of total-N and organic matter content. Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: A, The American University, Washington, DC (School of International Service), language: English, abstract: Sustainable development goals (SDGs) and households' solid waste management (HSWM) in the Republic of Benin, West Africa is the focus of this research. It explicitly investigates fermentable (organic) waste. Drawing on qualitative research, it argues that households' waste management could be a driver in the achievement of the SDGs. It briefly examines the international context of waste policy establishment and the framework of internationally supported waste project in the Republic of Benin (RB or Benin) in order to demonstrate the importance of socio-cultural factors in the waste sector. Through the lenses of urban political ecology and political ecology of waste theories, it explains how the perception and the treatment of waste in pre-colonial Benin might have changed over time, compared to postcolonial Benin. Inspired by one of the main challenges of the 21st century, achieving a worldwide sustainable development, the paper suggests a different approach of perceiving and treating waste in general and organic waste in particular. It argues that a community-based approach based on cooperatives could be the answer to the waste issue, but could also provide a canvas for the successful and inclusive achievement of the SDGs in Benin.

Since its economic boom in the 1990s Ireland has been facing ever growing waste arisings. Strict European legislation forced the country to find alternative solutions to sole waste disposal on which the country had been relying on exclusively. The Irish Government has aimed to decouple waste production from economic growth. The author doubts that the planned introduction of thermal treatment facilities would be an appropriate way to achieve the country´s ambitious targets in terms of waste management. Alternatively the author introduces a zero waste approach as a solution to Ireland´s waste problems. If a zero waste approach was applied emphasis would have to be put on reduction, minimization and recycling. Accordingly, the country of Ireland would pay its contribution to world wide challenging environmental protection and sustainable resource management.

Hospitals have been existing in one form or the other since time immemorial but there never had been so much concern about the waste generated by them. The implications of hospital wastes are manifold. Now hospital waste management is one of the thrust areas which are drawing attention of health authorities and also the government. Hospital waste management requires commitment from persons at all the levels of the health care facility.The present interventional study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice about hospital waste management and to provide training programme on hospital waste management for the staff and to assess the effect of training among the staff of dental teaching hospitals in Bangalore city. For the purpose of conducting this study cluster sampling procedure was adopted, and eight dental teaching hospitals were randomly selected.A specially prepared, and pre-tested structured questionnaire, was given to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices among the staff of dental teaching hospitals and collected personally. In each institution the following elements were studied using checklist i.e segregation, disinfection, disfigurement, containment, colour coding, personal protective equipment, in house transport and disposal. One day training programme on the hospital waste management was organized at each dental college. Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, , language: English, abstract: The conventional approach of biodiesel production is transesterification, using oil and alcohol in the presence of a catalyst with glycerol as a by-product of the reaction. Product quality is dependent on the type and amount of catalyst, type of oil feedstock, alcohol-to-oil ratio, etc. In terms of the best process, currently the alkali catalyzed process is the most profitable while the enzymatic based one is even more promising due to the lower consumption of energy and water; however it requires that the enzyme cost is reduced. The reason that biodiesel is not utilized widely around the world is due to the high cost of raw materials. To overcome this, one can use lower quality oils, such as Waste Cooking Oil (WCO). A lot of research has been carried out on the production of biodiesel from fresh vegetable and animal oil sources but the use of Waste Cooking Oil, such as palm oil, etc. has not been well documented. Then the aim of this current project is to analyze and optimize the conditions for biodiesel production from Waste Cooking Oil, by investigating interaction effects among process variables (temperature, oil-to-methanol molar ratio and catalyst loading) using SPC and other tools. Thus this project focuses on making biodiesel processes better and more efficient.

Several technologies are available to remediate water that is contaminated by industrial pollutant. However, many of these technologies are costly (e.g. excavation of contaminated material and chemical/physical treatment) or do not achieve a long-term nor aesthetic solution. Phytoremediation can provide a cost-effective, long-lasting and aesthetic solution for remediation of contaminated sites. In many cases, especially in tropical or subtropical areas, invasive plants such as the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and water lettuce (P. stratiotes L.) are used in these phytoremediation water systems. This is because, compared to native plants, these invasive plants show a much higher nutrient removal efficiency with their high nutrient uptake capacity, fast growth rate, and big biomass production. In the active growth season, for instance, water hyacinth plants can double in number and biomass in 6 to 15 days. This study shows the importance of phytoremediation in the phytoremediation of industrial waste.

Biomass potentials associated with "green waste" from residual grasslands were assessed for Schwäbisch Hall County in the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Roadside verges, conservation grasslands subject to low intensity use (landscape maintenance sites), riparian stretches along ditches and streams, and municipal green spaces (public lawns, parks and sports fields) were the area types considered. But with the current conventional system of SW approach might not allow these attempts to gain stability. The generation of biogas in a structured biogas plant based on biomass wet biomass. The simple model of a bioreactor helps to build up a simple dynamical model for predicting the biogas generation.In this chapter the gas components of biogas will be described including pollution and additional components beside methane and carbon dioxide. After collecting the biogas gas, the cleaning, the preparation and the conversion to dimethyl ether is the next step. The conversion of biogas to dimethyl ether (DME) is also known as liquefaction of biogas gas, if we use biomass biomass often called biomass to liquid fuel. Additional the necessary and sustainable property of Zero Emission is described and analyzed. The main influence on the ETS ( = emission trade system ) is analyzed and shown.
