Mangrove vegetation was observed along the sheltered places of Andhra Pradesh coastline, coastal backwater formations and the estuarine complex of the Krishna Delta has been studied in detail. Mangrove Ecosystems play an important role in preventing cyclones and tsunamis at estuaries from entering into interior land and in the economic development of local inhabitants. Mangrove plants have special adaptations such as stilt roots, viviparous germination, salt-excreting leaves, breathing roots, knee roots by which these plants survive in water logged anaerobic saline soils. The importance and utility of mangrove ecosystems which provide adequate nutritional values, energy supply and provide the raw materials needed for building houses, producing wood material for making boats, fishing, significantly to social and economic benefit to the people living along the coastline are well-known. Mangrove resources of indigenous population are gradually diminishing due to commercial exploitation. The ecological status of the mangrove vegetation is estimated based on their Diversity, Status, Species Dominance, IVI, MIV, SI, CD, Shannon- Weiner & Simpson Indices and Analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Biology - Miscellaneous, grade: 18/20, , course: European Master Programme in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation, language: English, abstract: True awareness of the great importance and vulnerability of natural spaces and resources is at the basis of innovative, holistic approaches to management such as ecosystem-based Marine Spatial Planning (EB-MSP). Under this perspective, there is an increasing need for reliable and meaningful baseline maps to provide decision-makers with straightforward information on the intrinsic biological value of a given marine/coastal area. The aims of this work are (1) to establish a spatial biological valuation of the Belgian coastal zone, using Marine Biological Valuation methods (MBV) (Derous 2007); and (2) to explore the applications of MBV for EB-MSP under different scenarios of space-use conflict at the Belgian coast (beach nourishment and nature conservation). Biological data from 1995 to 2011 on four ecosystem components (macrobenthos, epibenthos, hyperbenthos, and avifauna) have been integrated into a single database and used to perform MBV. Despite time constraints, spatial coverage and overall data availability were surprisingly satisfactory and allowed for significant trends and patterns to be observed. Results support a seaward extension of the nature reserve of "IJzermonding" in Lombardsijde beach. Detailed analysis of areas under coastal flood risk indicates that the use...

Quantitative models are crucial to almost every area of ecosystem science. They provide a logical structure that guides and informs empirical observations of ecosystem processes. They play a particularly crucial role in synthesizing and integrating our understanding of the immense diversity of ecosystem structure and function. Increasingly, models are being called on to predict the effects of human actions on natural ecosystems. Despite the widespread use of models, there exists intense debate within the field over a wide range of practical and philosophical issues pertaining to quantitative modeling. This book--which grew out of a gathering of leading experts at the ninth Cary Conference--explores those issues. The book opens with an overview of the status and role of modeling in ecosystem science, including perspectives on the long-running debate over the appropriate level of complexity in models. This is followed by eight chapters that address the critical issue of evaluating ecosystem models, including methods of addressing uncertainty. Next come several case studies of the role of models in environmental policy and management. A section on the future of modeling in ecosystem science focuses on increasing the use of modeling in undergraduate education and the modeling skills of professionals within the field. The benefits and limitations of predictive (versus observational) models are also considered in detail. Written by stellar contributors, this book grants access to t...

The coastal zone is one of the most dynamic environments on our planet and is much affected by global change, especially sea-level rise. Coastal environments harbour valuable ecosystems, but they are also hugely important from a societal point of view. This book, which draws on the expertise of 21 leading international coastal scientists, represents an up-to-date account of coastal environments and past, present and future impacts of global change. The first chapter of the book outlines key principles that underpin coastal systems and their behaviour. This is followed by a discussion of key processes, including sea level change, sedimentation, storms, waves and tides, that drive coastal change. The main part of the book consists of a discussion of the main coastal environments (beaches, dunes, barriers, salt marshes, tidal flats, estuaries, coral reefs, deltas, rocky and glaciated coasts and coastal groundwater), and how these are affected by global change. The final chapter highlights strategies for coping with coastal change. Readership: final year undergraduate and postgraduate-level students on coastal courses in a wide range subjects, including geography, environmental management, geology, oceanography and coastal/civil engineering. The book will also be a valuable resource for researchers and applied scientists dealing with coastal environments. It emphasizes on the existence of stable bays in coastal geomorphology and their use in coastal stabilization. The conventional measures for saving beaches, such as seawalls, groins, offshore breakwaters, and renourishment, are discussed in detail, followed by an alternative known as headland control. Many types of coast, and the respective defense measures, are discussed, especially for eroding beaches downcoast of harbors with long breakwaters. The formation of offshore bars during storms is examined and the design of stable recreational beaches is demonstrated. Practical design problems are discussed in all cases. Many issues requiring attention in coastal engineering are also outlined.

Humans are altering the composition of biological communities through a variety of activities that increase rates of species invasions and species extinctions, at all scales, from local to global. These changes in components of the Earth's biodiversity have a strong potential to alter ecosystem. Ecological experiments, observations, and theoretical developments show that ecosystem properties depend greatly on biodiversity in terms of the functional characteristics of organisms present in the ecosystem and the distribution and abundance of those organisms over space and time. Species effects act in concert with the effects of climate, resource availability, and disturbance regimes in influencing ecosystem properties. The scientific community has come to a broad consensus on many aspects of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, including many points relevant to management of ecosystems. Further progress will require integration of knowledge about biotic and abiotic controls on ecosystem properties, how ecological communities are structured, and the forces driving species extinctions and invasions.

The Creation of Markets for Ecosystem Services in the United States is a detailed, critical analysis of the most advanced efforts to create ecosystem services markets in the United States. With the help of in-depth case studies of three well-known attempts to create such markets--in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the Ohio River basin and the Willamette River basin--the book explains why very few of these markets have actually succeeded even after close to two decades of much scholarly enthusiasm, significant federal funding and concerted efforts by NGOs, government agencies and private businesses.Based on interviews, policy analysis and participatory observation, three features of markets for ecosystem services emerge as particularly problematic. First, the logic of displacement or the idea that particular elements of an ecosystem can be separated, quantified and traded across landscapes or watersheds runs counter to political interests, environmental beliefs and people's connections to specific places. The second problem is that of measurement. By highlighting the long and often contentious histories of specific measurement systems used in ecosystem services markets, van Maasakkers shows that these quantification methods embed a range of assumptions and decisions about what counts when conserving or restoring (parts of) ecosystems. The third problem is related to participation in environmental decision-making. Since the requirements to buy offsets stem from federal and so...

This research shows the progress of platforms, strategies, policies and actions in regard with forest ecosystem services in the European Union. It also depicts the trend of science/scientific work after the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis Report had been published in 2005. It assesses strengths and weaknesses of the main stream of EU policies such as the EU Forestry Strategy and the Forest Action Plan. The research demonstrates many shortages concerning adequate focus on the forest ecosystem services in both domains, EU policy and scientific knowledge. It illustrates that both fields have payed dominant attention to climate change and biodiversity. Indeed, both of these issues have already been part of crucial discussions in the field of environment protection, before forest ecosystem services attracted proper attention. The accomplished research provides some suggestions to bridge the gaps in the field of forest ecosystem services and integrate the results of researches into the policy making process.

Climate change and consequent sea level rise, accompanied by coastal erosion threaten the islands here with complete destruction. Natural disasters, particularly meteorological, play havoc in this part of the world. The region is geomorphologically unstable and prone to tidal oscillations. Constant change in morphology and geotectonics is a common feature here so that the islands are repeatedly built and rebuilt. Existing islands disappear and new ones are born from time to time. The Indian Sunderbans form one of the most densely populated areas of the subcontinent. In view of the vulnerable condition and the growing population of the region, certain remedies must be undertaken immediately.

Ecosystem services are the resources and processes supplied by natural ecosystems which benefit humankind (for example, pollination of crops by insects, or water filtration by wetlands). They underpin life on earth, provide major inputs to many economic sectors and support our lifestyles. Agricultural and urban areas are by far the largest users of ecosystems and their services and (for the first time) this book explores the role that ecosystem services play in these managed environments. The book also explores methods of evaluating ecosystem services, and discusses how these services can be maintained and enhanced in our farmlands and cities. This book will be useful to students and researchers from a variety of fields, including applied ecology, environmental economics, agriculture and forestry, and also to local and regional planners and policy makers.

In 1986, with the advent of the "era of renovation" (doi moi), Vietnam began to experience significant economic growth which has continued up to the present. Geographically, it is particularly the coastal zone of Vietnam which is of paramount importance for assuring the country's ongoing development. However, the coastal zone of Vietnam is a region strongly under stress. Therefore, initiatives have been undertaken since a number of years now in order to establish strategies for the sustainable management of the country's shoreline. For this, good governance will be crucial in order to guarantee successful management strategies and institutions. The present study provides an examination of challenges and opportunities regarding good governance in the coastal zone of Vietnam. The overall goal is to assess the relation between governance and coastal management and to present reasons why Vietnam is in such a strong need of developing an Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). To this end, a case study will be presented from Nam Dinh province in the Red River delta of Vietnam.

Marine and beach tourism is one of the still growing fields in tourism worldwide. Marine and beach tourism activities include scuba diving, snorkeling, wind surfing, fishing, observing marine mammals and birds, cruising or ferry riding, sea kayaking, visiting fishing villages and lighthouses, sailing, and motor yachting. The growth in marine and beach tourism has helped develop and improved coastal areas. Thailand, with its numerous attractions and tourist destinations, continues to amaze the world regarding marine and beach tourism. One of the most popular marine and beach destinations in Thailand is Phuket. Phuket is Thailand's largest island and considered to be the most famous. This island has an exceptional climate: The monsoon in Phuket comes earlier than in the other parts of the gulf and during the rainy season, the island experiences rain only once or twice a day.The purpose of this study aims to develop the fields of ecotourism, sea tourism, and beach tourism. The study was conducted at the site of Phuket, being one of the worldwide known marine and beach attractions and well-known among foreigners. Moreover, the island of Phuket also has many beautiful marine and beach attractions that are still to be discovered by the public and need to be developed to entice more tourists to come and revisit the island.

Fisheries sector of Bangladesh is playing a vital role regarding employment generation, animal protein supply, foreign currency earning, and poverty alleviation. Bangladesh produced almost 3% of the world’s shrimp, and the shrimp sector was the second largest export industry in Bangladesh behind only Ready Made Garments (RMG). The coastal region especially the southwestern Bangladesh (Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat) is one of the most promising areas for shrimp cultivation due to two major factors: firstly, it’s fresh and saline water resources, which are mostly abundant almost in all seasons; and secondly, the world’s largest continuous mangrove forest, the Sundarbans is situated in the region.

Farmers in the coastal area of Walcheren, the Netherlands are faced with issues of saltwater intrusion and summer drought. These coastal areas are naturally brackish-saline environments due to Holocene marine transgressions. Farming in these coastal areas relies on the existence of freshwater lenses that float on top of saline groundwater. These freshwater lenses are much smaller than what is typically found in the dunes and are the product of the balance between infiltrating rainwater and saline seepage. This research provides an investigation into the hydrology of the dune area between Oostkapelle and Vrouwenpolder and the freshwater lenses found on the farmlands using geophysical methods and density dependent groundwater flow and solute transport modeling with the numerical transport code MOCDENS3D. The model is further used to test the feasibility of shallow phreatic Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) scenarios. The findings of this research outline a low cost and effective way to store water for later use such as in dry summer months with ASR and has great potential to help coastal farming and irrigation practices in similar coastal settings around the world.

Pirates, Ports, and Coasts in Asia aims to fill some of the hostorical gaps in the coverage of maritime piracy and armed robbery in Asia. The authors highlight a variety of activities ranging from raiding, destroying and pillaging coastal villages and capturing inhabitants to attacking and taking over vessels, robbing and then trading the cargo and its people. Generally speaking, what connects these activities is the fact that they are carried out at sea, often in the coastal inshore waters, by vessels attacking other vessels or raiding coastal settlements. Acts of maritime piracy cannot be regarded as being located outside the relevant framework of the coastal zone. Coastal zones have therefore become highly desirable places subject to great social and ecological pressures. Piracy being the most dramatic of marginal(ized) maritime livelihood, this book brings the relationship between pirates, ports, and coastal hinterlands into focus.

Nematodes, as one component of the soil ecosystem, interact with biotic and abiotic factors, as they live in capillary water; their permeable cuticle helps in maintaining direct contact with their micro-environment and any minor change in the environment affect them directly, which can be easily studied by their assemblages using various indices. They are classified on the basis of their feeding behaviour, which helps them to serve as good indicators of soil ecosystem. They also occupy a key position in the soil food webs and may help in regulating it. In the present work, nematodes have been studied under different field stresses involving agro-ecosystems to coal mines and are found to be perfect indicators of soil as reflected by use of faunal profiles and representative indices.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: Passed, Assumption University of Thailand (College of Internet Distance Education (CIDE), School of Business Administration), course: Master Thesis Project, 100 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis presents a research project entitled 'A Hypothetical Enhanced Renewable Energy Utilization (EREU) Model for Electricity Generation in Thailand'. This research is motivated by Thailand's rapidly increasing electricity consumption caused by the country's long-standing above-average economic growth. Consequently, the rising electricity demand can only be satisfied by continuously growing electricity imports and thus creating a significant burden to Thailand's national budget. Further-more, Thailand is heavily dependent on natural gas reserves for electricity generation, however, these are expected to be depleted within only three decades and global price levels for conventional fuels are increasingly volatile with an ascending tendency as well. Therefore, Thailand faces an urgent need to strategically plan for the broad utili-zation of domestic renewable energy resources, which is essential for a more diversi-fied and thus sustainable electricity generation, as well as for the nation's endeavor to become an energy hub within the South East Asian region. Under these circumstances this research conducts a comprehensive literature re-view regarding...

Oswald J. Schmitz Resolving Ecosystem Complexity (MPB-47)

An ecosystem's complexity develops from the vast numbers of species interacting in ecological communities. The nature of these interactions, in turn, depends on environmental context. How do these components together influence an ecosystem's behavior as a whole? Can ecologists resolve an ecosystem's complexity in order to predict its response to disturbances? Resolving Ecosystem Complexity develops a framework for anticipating the ways environmental context determines the functioning of ecosystems. Oswald Schmitz addresses the critical questions of contemporary ecology: How should an ecosystem be conceptualized to blend its biotic and biophysical components? How should evolutionary ecological principles be used to derive an operational understanding of complex, adaptive ecosystems? How should the relationship between the functional biotic diversity of ecosystems and their properties be understood? Schmitz begins with the universal concept that ecosystems are comprised of species that consume resources and which are then resources for other consumers. From this, he deduces a fundamental rule or evolutionary ecological mechanism for explaining context dependency: individuals within a species trade off foraging gains against the risk of being consumed by predators. Through empirical examples, Schmitz illustrates how species use evolutionary ecological strategies to negotiate a predator-eat-predator world, and he suggests that the implications of species trade-offs ar...

The possibility of tapping into the non-conventional financial system has been accelerated by contemporary information and telecommunications technology like mobile telephones and mobile network platforms. Therefore, banking the unbanked still remains an attractive business opportunity, especially in emerging and developing regions like South America, Asia and Africa because a great percentage of the population in such regions can afford a mobile phone but not a bank account. Riding on the mobile telephone and network technology, a non-conventional financial system has emerged which does not rely on the traditional banking infrastructure but relies on different platforms in a complex business ecosystem. However, this ecosystem appears to be in a state of flux and presents different business opportunities and challenges that can potentially stimulate emerging and developing economies like Zambia.

A large part of the world’s coastlines consists of sandy beaches and dunes that may undergo dramatic changes during storms. Extreme storm events in some cases dominate the erosion history of the coastline and may have dramatic impacts on densely populated coastal areas. Policy, research and historical background are essential elements that need to be interconnected for effective coastal planning and management. This book discusses this framework, with Chapter 1 providing an insight into policy settings and science-policy interactions in the area of coastal risks related to storms and flooding, and integrated coastal zone management. This is followed by a review of the current understanding of the processes generating extreme coastal events, the morphological evolution of coastlines during and after the events, and the methods for monitoring the process as it occurs or for post-event appraisal. The final chapter discusses the importance of historical approaches regarding coastal threats, taking the Xynthia storm as an example.

From 2001 to 2006, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra transformed Thailand's international role from one of obscurity into a kind of regional hegemon. Thaksin's diplomatic ambitions were reflected in his myriad of grandiose foreign policy initiatives, designed to locate Thailand at the forefront of regional politics and reinstall the Thai sphere of influence over weaker neighbouring states. He abolished the traditional bending-with-the-wind foreign policy, revamped the Thai Foreign Ministry, and empowered Thai envoys through the CEO Ambassadors programme. But in this process, Thaksin was accused of exploiting foreign policy to enrich his business empire. Thaksin's reinvention of Thailand as an up-and-coming regional power was therefore tainted by conflicts of interest and the absence of ethical principles in the country's foreign policy.
