The book, Media, Environmental Sustainability and National Development in Nigeria takes a look at the interface between the mass media and the environment in the process of national development. Quite often many take part in practices that hurt the environment to the extent that human survival is impaired. Such practices include unrestrained felling of trees which leads to deforestation; and unregulated hunting to the extent that many animals have become extinct. Many ecological problems have resulted with erosion washing off top soil which imperils agricultural development. The destruction of the flora and fauna is also an important challenge. The nine-chapter book addresses such issues as State of the Environment, Global Warming, Assault on the Environment, Some Ecological Disaster Zones and efforts made to Reclaim the Environment, among others. Since the mass media are channels of information to the populace, the book emphasizes the role of the mass media in drawing attention to healthy environment practices while discouraging negative human activities that depreciate the quality of the environment and endanger the survival of present and future generations of the human race.

Decades of irresponsible oil exploitation in the Niger Delta have caused a water and air pollution which does not have many comparisons anywhere else. In an already fragile country as Nigeria, characterised by weak democratic institutions and poor economic governance, this situation has led to increasing discontent and violence towards both the government and the oil multinationals. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them from achieving a sustainable development, violating their human rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This book analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the local people's standards of life, and to make Nigeria emerge as a socio-environmentally responsible African resource-rich country.

This volume of essays on public policy challenges in the Buhari-led Nigeria is a child of necessity. In 2015 and sixteen years after the PDP assumed the leadership reins in Nigeria, it was evident to all, that Nigeria was not enjoying the best form of governance and purposeful leadership. The strength of government was absolutely lacking. Enter 2015 and the grand alliance and vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed to be the only credible alternative capable of upending the PDP and providing Nigeria the much leadership change it desired. Hope about Nigeria's prospects soared with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The hope was well founded: it reflected the high expectations generated both by the smooth transfer of power from the Jonathan administration, itself a sign of a maturing democracy, and by the scintillating campaign by candidate Buhari. It did not take long before the Buhari administration confronted the political reality of governance. The governance reality that the Buhari administration faced on assuming the reins of power consisted of his own campaign promises (tackling insecurity, combating corruption, and growing the economy -- with emphasis on reducing unemployment and diversifying the economy); unanticipated crises (resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and onset of recession); and self-inflicted injuries (delayed appointment of his cabinet, policy somersaults on foreign exchange policy, and poor management of the reces...

Questions surrounding democracy, governance, and development especially in view of Africa have provoked acrimonious debates in the past few years. It remains a perennial question why some decades after political independence in Africa the continent continues experiencing bad governance, lagging behind socio-economically, and its democracy questionable. We admit that a plethora of theories and reasons, including iniquitous and maledictious ones, have been conjured in an attempt to explain and answer the questions on why Africa seems to be lagging behind other continents in issues pertaining to good governance, democracy and socio-economic development. Yet, none of the theories and reasons proffered so far seems to have provided enduring solutions to Africa's diverse complex problems and predicaments. This book dissects and critically examines the matrix of Africa's multifaceted problems on governance, democracy and development in an attempt to proffer enduring solutions to the continent's long-standing political and socio-economic quandaries and hitches. Contributions are by African scholars and researchers from different disciplinary orientations and countries. Grounded in empirical reality as well as the lived experiences of the contributors, the book is an invaluable asset for social scientists, development practitioners, politicians and civil society activists.

The mass media, through their structure and orientation, influence political contests between actors. By providing access to different groups , individuals and institutions, the media contribute to domestic empowerment or disempowerment in democratisation. Through issues raised and organisations used as sources of news, human rights influenced the coverage of democratisation in Nigeria as evinced by the discourses on the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and the Ogoni crisis in 1995. This study makes a powerful case for the theorisation of democratisation in Nigeria between 1990 and 1999 as a communication process. The author argues stridently that theorisation of democratisation as a communication process contributes to our knowledge of the relationship between human rights, media and politics in the context of Nigeria.

The book is premised on the assertion that institutions and processes of governance are fundamental to Africa’s transformation in the twenty-first century. After decades of political independence and myriads of development experimentations in most of Africa, there are still 388 million people in extreme poverty and approximately 239 million chronically undernourished in the continent. The book provides a critical overview of the various approaches to development and the many fads of public sector reform in the developing world. The discussion also lays out an analytical framework drawn extensively from the literature on administrative and institutional capacity to advance what the authors refer to as strategic development management. In particular, the discussion proposes models of innovative participatory governance for leveraging developing countries’ natural and human resource potentials for economic and social development. Using Sierra Leone, a post-confclit country, as an illustrative case study, the book examines the nature, challenges, and prospects of the institutions and processes of development policy governance in developing countries.

Following the experiences of failed companies in America and Europe in recent times and the resultant consequence on unemployment, wealth creation and shareholder value, corporate governance has taken a centre stage worldwide especially in emerging economies such as Nigeria that can ill-afford system failure.Typically, in public corporations directors are elected by shareholders to manage the affairs of the corporate on their behalf; which by implications imposes on the directors fiduciary responsibilities. A person with fiduciary duty is a person entrusted with the power or property with the understanding that the person is working for the benefit of the individual(s) who may have entrusted them with such responsibilities - therefore directors have fiduciary responsibilities to work in the best interest of shareholders and for the benefit of shareholders not in the interest of some other people or their individual interest. From all indications, the current global financial crises have revealed severe shortcoming in corporate governance across the global, there seems to be a common factor, an apparent lack of checks and balances needed by companies in order to cultivate sound business ethics bringing about the concern for improved corporate governance acro...

This book presents an analysis of the concept, policy and impact of agricultural production in Nigeria. Data on agricultural inputs and production, real agricultural gross domestic product, foreign private investments in agriculture, agricultural budgets as well as infrastructural and industrial development indices were analysed against extant policy regimes. The book reveals that increase in agricultural production led to significant improvement in rural welfare in Nigeria. It further stresses the importance of the expansion of land area under irrigation in order to sustain agricultural production and boost rural welfare in Nigeria.

The energy crisis in Nigeria is such that has brought about development setbacks, environmental degradation, increased poverty rate, etc and these must be addressed to bring about socio-economic development. The key to improving energy access lies in the ability of the government to include renewable energy sources like solar, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, as part of the nation's energy mix. However, the government can only achieve this feat where private investors (domestic and foreign) are actively involved. The Renewable energy industry in Nigeria is driven by Policies and most recently, the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, 2015. Policies in Nigeria have been criticised for lacking in implementation, consistency, stability and lacking binding effects. These factors send the wrong signals to potential investors who need to be assured of security over investments made. Thus, it is therfore pertinent to have a legislation on renewable energy that would complement already existing policies and guarantee justice in event of a breach. The law can create an enabling environment for potential investors to drive renewable energy development in Nigeria.

Plato and Aristotle judged that any political institution could not be discussed without their proper goals and that is the happiness of and well being of its citizens which could be achieved if the political leaders are able to secure the peace and unity of the polity they lead. Hence, the main aim of politics is virtuous pursuit of the common good of all the citizens both leaders and the lead. Machiavelli deviated from this standard and tradition set by his predecessors thereby making politics to be autonomous, having nothing to do with morality. This Machiavellian principle has raised its ugly head in Nigeria polity in the name of godfatherism. In the Nigeria situation, this Machiavelian principle has been swallowed hook line and sinker by politicians and the effect is crises of democratization, good governance and development. However, in order not to fold hands and bemoan our woes, the author uses the paradigm of his philosophic prowess to proffer some suggestion through which this threat of godfatherism can be eradicated. This book is definitely a valuable material for students, scholars, activists and all those interested in Nigeria, its current problems and its future prospects.

Polemic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: 1, National University of Public Service, language: English, abstract: This publication is intended to address notable individuals and institutions in Nigeria concerning the insecurity in Nigeria, the weak government response and the hydra-headed corruption promoted by the wasteful bicameral legislative system of the Nigerian National Assembly headed by the President of the Senate. One of the fulcrum of this publication focuses on the manipulations of democratic principles, bogus salaries appropriated to members of the national assembly against the set laws of the country. It highlights the fact that lawmakers are the real law breakers in Nigeria as they manipulate the law for personal economic gains and political aggrandizement. I have highlighted the discrepancies in governance with the purpose of exposing the loopholes and making recommendations for transparency and good governance. It is expected, that through this action, my previous publication, "Policing the Gaps between Budgets and Implementation in Developing Economies. The Impediments to Welfare and Security in Ghana and Nigeria", will have a robust leeway towards practical actualization.

Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, Ebonyi State University (New Frontier Ind. Research and Publications Int'l, Makurdi, Benue, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: Until very recently, Nigerian indigenous music was silenced by its Western counterpart, following westernisation, globalisation and attrition. Music is cultural. And all Nigerian cultures have their respective music. Despite the recent promotion, development and sustenance bids of several artists, scholars and concerned authorities, the teeming Nigerian masses are yet to be roused towards and properly educated, sensitised and re-oriented on and towards indigenous music. It is against the above backdrop that this study has emerged to call for a change in these regards. The paper maintains that it is imperative to properly, constantly and adequately promote, develop and sustain our indigenous music so as to project our indigenous music, create a place for it in the globalised Western hostile village, and allow for culture continuity and national development. Music unites people(s) and allows for the showcasing of cultural identity, ethos and aesthetics. Therefore, to duly tap from the potentials/prospects of indigenous music, it is imperative to incessantly promote, develop and sustain indigenous music in Nigeria and beyond. This study is anchored on music and indigenous wholistic theories that are most suitable for it, following its nature and pursuit. It relied o...

Information need is an individual or group's desire to locate and obtain information to satisfy a conscious or unconscious need. Although we know the potential of rural sector, we have not given due importance to rural information services. Now the time is ripe when we can no longer ignore the information needs of the rural people. Rural people are not only in need of the information regarding agriculture and animal husbandry but they are also interested in all kinds of information which can help them in their development. To bridge the gap between the elite and the poor, it is necessary to put emphasis on the information need fulfilling development messages. Mass media like T.V., Radio, Newspaper and Magazines can play very important role in communicating need based messages to rural masses. There is no doubt that mass media can bring development in rural area provided media personnel produce and transmit need based information. Media can be made more effective if background information of rural people, media availability with rural people and media utilization pattern of rural people is known to the media managers and development agencies.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Law - Miscellaneous, grade: 1C, University of Stirling (School of Arts and Humanities - Division of Law and Philosophy), course: LLM International Energy Law and Policy, language: English, abstract: Decades of irresponsible oil exploitation in the Niger Delta have caused a water and air pollution which does not have many comparisons anywhere else. In an already fragile country as Nigeria, characterised by weak democratic institutions and poor economic governance, this situation has led to increasing discontent and violence towards both the government and the oil multinationals. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them to achieve a sustainable development, violating their Human Rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This paper analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by the oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the standards of li...

Over the years, theatre designers and artists in Nigeria have been dependent on imported colourants, despite the availability of local raw materials, which could be processed to obtain these colourants. This book discusses the possibility of exploring local alternatives by way of sourcing for colour-producing substances in parts of Nigeria, refining and putting them to use in stage scenery, costume and make-up. This study has ascertained that raw colour pigments are available in ample quantity in Nigeria, enough to sustain commercial colour production, and that the demand for colourants in Nigeria and the cost are high. This work should therefore be valuable to stakeholders in colour manufacturing, trade and usage - individuals, entrepreneurs, organizations and government who may wish to explore the opportunities in the colour-manufacturing sector for the sustenance and development of scenography and visual arts in Nigeria. Researchers studying artistic production materials, and those reviewing the social, economic and the cultural circumstances of art practice in Nigeria would find this work useful.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Law, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Chemnitz, language: English, abstract: Corporate management and corporate governance are becoming more and more crucial in today's successful economies. With the increasing relevance of capital markets this subjectcomes more into the focus of the public. Particularly, the fast growing importance of institutional investors is a key factor which helps to explain the changing attitude of managerstowards shareholders and corporate governance. In conjunction with the German capital market, a wide variety of mismanagement inGerman public limited companies has revealed shortfalls of German top-management and corporate control in the last decade. This development was of fundamental importance for the development of the German Corporate Governance Code. Hence, the basic underlyingof corporate governance can be attributed to a conflict between the management of a listed corporation and its owners. More precisely, this conflict arises because the management does not adequately comprise the interests of shareholders. In Germany, assets under management of professional investors have increased at 92 percent from 1990 to 2001.1 In addition, a growing administration of private savings by professional fund managers as well as the intensified exercise of influence by institutionalinvestors on corporate governance and corporate management respectively corporate strategy is observa...

Although it is contestable, the reasons for this vary. First, democracy has gained acceptability as a form of government based on equity and justice. Secondly, it purports to uphold the rule of law, and as well, guarantee the preservation of human rights. As it is assumed that effective strategies adopted and properly implemented by a nation have the tendency to accelerate progress in the development of the said nation, this work examined some strategies for sustainable development in Nigeria. It highlighted existing strategies for development in the country, examined progress and challenges in implementing the strategies, and further identified measures which when adopted and implemented, will likely change the social, economic, and political condition of the country for economic growth and sustainable development.

Realities of the political landscapes of many nations are calling to question the once-assumed and theorised impact of the mass media in shaping people’s political opinions, attitudes, knowledge and behaviour. While many authors had concentrated on the developments with the adult populace, only few studies had examined the trend among youths, especially undergraduates. This book is therefore an attempt to bridge this ‘knowledge gap’ by offering fresh insights into the dynamic relationship between media use and political behaviour within the specific context of undergraduates in South West Nigeria. With these fresh perspectives, it is hoped that the book will provide a good reference point to students, communication researchers/teachers including libraries.
