Ali A. Mazrui A Tale of Two Africas. Nigeria and South Africa as Contrasting Visions

Nigeria and South Africa provide the socioeconomic and political contrasts in the African condition. Some of these contrasts can be demonstrated in the following dialectics: Nigeria is the Africa of human resources, South Africa is a land of mineral resources; Nigeria is repellant to European settlement; South Africa is a magnet for such settlement; Nigeria is a mono-racial society, South Africa is a multiracial society; Nigeria is grappling with the politics of religion, South Africa's is pre-occupied with the politics of secularism; Nigeria is Africa's largest exporter of oil, South Africa is Africa's largest consumer of oil; Nigeria is a paradigm of indigenization, South Africa is a paragon of Westernization. Building on these contrasts, Professor Ali Mazrui, master of the dialectical approach to socio-political analysis, demonstrates how the two most influential countries between the Niger and the Cape of Good Hope are alternative faces of Africa. _______________________Professor Ali Mazrui needs no introduction to any student of African politics. Danny Schechter When South Africa Called, We Answered. How the Media and International Solidarity Helped Topple Apartheid

There were two battles against apartheid - a political campaign and a media war. The political story has been told, and now you can read about the media effort. As South Africa marks in 2014 its 20th anniversary as a democracy, its transformation is still hailed as a "miracle." Most of the credit for the region's massive changes is awarded to towering leaders like the late Nelson Mandela. But the freedom fighters didn't achieve it alone--they had active solidarity from a global anti-apartheid movement, with a media component that showcased the struggle and kept it visible worldwide. "News Dissector" Danny Schechter reveals the inside story of what he calls a "Media War" in When South Africa Called, We Answered. He presents journalism as activism and displays the determination and dedication of journalists worldwide in exposing and eradicating apartheid.DANNY SCHECHTER is a writer, television producer, and independent filmmaker who also speaks about media and financial issues. He is the editor of Mediachannel1.org and blogs daily as the News Dissector at NewsDissector.net. Mule Ndonye Michael Media and 2013 Political Process in Kenya

Today, media remains the most influential institution in the world. Given its power, it has become an inevitable tool for advertising, advocacy, and passing information in developed and developing countries. We know media, new and traditional, in political processes because of the hype that comes with politics. In Kenya, media has had its ups and downs since independence. The infamous 2007/2008 post election violence will take time to be forgotten and the narration of the ordeals of the violence can not pass without mentioning media's role. This book examines the use of media by Kenyan politicians, especially the social media and particularly twitter; the significant case study that Kenyan media launched by holding the first presidential debate prior to March 4th elections: an event that proved to shape voter decision; and the failures of Kenyan media as a watchdog in the coverage of the 2013 elections in Kenya. This book will be fit for those who want to explore the role of media in political communication. The future lies in the hands of media. True or false?

Michael Perman Pursuit of Unity. A Political History of the American South

In Pursuit of Unity, Michael Perman presents a comprehensive analysis of the South's political history. In the 1800s, the region endured almost continuous political crisis--nullification, secession, Reconstruction, the Populist revolt, and disfranchisement. For most of the twentieth century, the region was dominated by a one-party system, the "Solid South," that ensured both political unity internally and political influence in Washington. But in both centuries, the South suffered from the noncompetitive, one-party politics that differentiated it from the rest of the country. Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, Perman argues, the South's political distinctiveness has come to an end, as has its pursuit of unity.

Christopher J. Manganiello Southern Water, Southern Power. How the Politics of Cheap Energy and Water Scarcity Shaped a Region

Why has the American South--a place with abundant rainfall--become embroiled in intrastate wars over water? Why did unpredictable flooding come to characterize southern waterways, and how did a region that seemed so rich in this all-important resource become derailed by drought and the regional squabbling that has tormented the arid American West? To answer these questions, policy expert and historian Christopher Manganiello moves beyond the well-known accounts of flooding in the Mississippi Valley and irrigation in the West to reveal the contested history of southern water. From the New South to the Sun Belt eras, private corporations, public utilities, and political actors made a region-defining trade-off: The South would have cheap energy, but it would be accompanied by persistent water insecurity. Manganiello's compelling environmental history recounts stories of the people and institutions that shaped this exchange and reveals how the use of water and power in the South has been challenged by competition, customers, constituents, and above all, nature itself.

The last quarter of a century has seen an unprecedented wave of democratization around the globe. In these transitions from authoritarian rule to a more democratic order, the media have played a key role both by facilitating, but frequently also inhibiting, democratic practices to take root. This book provides an accessible and systematic introduction to the media in transitional democracies. It analyses the problems that occur when transforming the media into independent institutions that are able to inform citizens and hold governments to account. The book covers the following topics: normative conceptions of media and democracy; the role of the past in the transition process; the internet as a new space for democratic change; the persistence of political interference in emerging democracies; the interlocking power of media markets and political ownership; the challenges to journalistic professionalism in post-authoritarian contexts; the role of the media in divided societies; The book takes a global view by exploring the interplay of political and media transitions in different pathways of democratization that have taken place in Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. It will be of interest to advanced students and scholars who want a better understanding of the media outside established Western democracies. The book will also be of great value to policymakers and activists who are involved in strengthening the media in transitional democracies.

In the earlystages of commentary about the impact of the digital age on civic life, debates revolvedaround whether the Internet enhanced or discouraged civic and political action. Since thenwe have seen new media move to center stage in politics and activism--from the 2008 USelection to the 2011 Arab Spring to the Occupy movement. We have also seen new patternsin how different sub-groups make use of digital media. These developments havepushed people to move beyond questions about whether new media are good or bad forcivic life, to ask instead: how, under what conditions, and for whom, do new digital tools become resources for political critiqueand action by the young? This book will provide a platform for a new wave of scholarship about young people's political participation in the digitalage. We define "youth" or "young people" as roughly between the ages of 12 and 25. We include perspectives from politicalscience, education, cultural studies, learning sciences, and youth development. Dan Agbese Ibrahim Babangida. The Military, Power and Politics

To borrow a hackneyed phrase, Nigeria has had a chequered political history before and since independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. Two sets of actors - the civilian politicians and the military politicians - have been on the national political stage since January 15, 1966. General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida was one of them. In his eight years in power as president, or perhaps more correctly as military president, he affected the course of Nigeria's events, for better or for worse, in a way that few, if any, before him did. It is not possible to tell Nigeria's story without Babangida's part in it. The book is the story of IBB, the little orphan from Minna, Niger State and his meticulous rise to the top of his profession and the leadership of his country. Perhaps, more importantly, it is the story of Nigeria, its post-independence politics and power, told from the perspective of the actions and decisions of one of the main actors on the country's political stage. The events that shaped the Babangida era did not begin on August 27, 1985, the day he staged a palace coup against General Muhammadu Buhari. They began long before that. This book is the definitive story of the military, politics and power in Nigeria.

Chernoh Alpha M. Bah The Ebola Outbreak in West Africa. Corporate Gangsters, Multinationals . Rogue Politicians

In The Ebola Outbreak in West Africa, the award-wining Sierra Leonean journalist, political activist and human rights advocate Chernoh Alpha M. Bah presents an in-depth investigation that challenges the official narrative surrounding the origin and widespread transmission of the 2014 West African Ebola epidemic – one of the most catastrophic human tragedies in the twenty first century. Bah demonstrates with hard evidence that the western narrative, which rashly pinned the origin of the epidemic on a two-year-old boy in a small Guinean village and implicated the backwardness of Africans as the cause for the widespread nature of the outbreak, was neither corroborated nor challenged by Western journalists and the Western academic establishment. He explores why, at the initial stages of the outbreak when thousands of men, women and children were dying, Western media had already settled upon a narrative that blamed and criminalized the victims for the epidemic’s explosion. In this groundbreaking text, Bah establishes the West African outbreak as the continuation of a colonial legacy of multinational corporate exploitation, political corruption, and western dehumanization of the African. Glaringly absent from the official narrative, he argues, is how the billions of dollars of foreign corporate investments existing in West Africa’s natural resource exploitation and the strategic international military and governmental intelligence interests in the region (including billion-dollar a...

Adam C. Peter Television and Democratization in Mexico - Media Markets, TV Content and Voter Behavior in Mexico

Despite having operated under the pretense of democracy for the entirety of its 71-years of single party rule, Mexico was not a democratic state. From 1929 to 2000 Mexico was ruled by a single authoritarian regime, the PRI. Part of the PRI's long-lasting success came from its close relationship with what was Mexico's only private television network (Televisa). During most of the PRI's rule, Televisa news coverage had been heavily biased in favor of the ruling party. This book examines the relationship between television campaign coverage and the later stages of Mexico's transition to democracy. It is the contention of this book that the media, and in particular television, was a driving force behind Mexico's democratization. But this is not the entire story. Without the 1993 privatization of Mexico's television market, this change may not have come about. Unless the markets in which mass media operate are open and competitive, the media will not function in a manner that is conducive to democratization. This book examines television's capacity to influence political behavior and also how media content can be shaped by market structure.

A porous medium is composed of a solid matrix and its geometrical complement: the pore space. This pore space can be occupied by one or more fluids. The understanding of transport phenomena in porous media is a challenging intellectual task. This book provides a detailed analysis of the aspects required for the understanding of many experimental techniques in the field of porous media transport phenomena. It is aimed at students or engineers who may not be looking specifically to become theoreticians in porous media, but wish to integrate knowledge of porous media with their previous scientific culture, or who may have encountered them when dealing with a technological problem. While avoiding the details of the more mathematical and abstract developments of the theories of macroscopization, the author gives as accurate and rigorous an idea as possible of the methods used to establish the major laws of macroscopic behavior in porous media. He also illustrates the constitutive laws and equations by demonstrating some of their classical applications. Priority is to put forward the constitutive laws in concrete circumstances without going into technical detail. This first volume in the three-volume series focuses on fluids in equilibrium in the pore space; interfaces, the equilibrium of solutions and freezing in porous media; and gives experimental investigations of capillary behavior and porometry, and sorption and porometry.

Terje Skjerdal Responsible watchdogs.

The social and political transition that came with the fall of apartheid in South Africa had tremendous significance for the media. The media were actively engaged in the discussion of what role they should serve in the newfound democracy. This book is the result of a research project that scrutinzed more than 100 articles that appeared in the South African press in the post-apartheid years 1996-99. Two main discourses were identified: the watchdog discourse and the nation-building discourse. Those who propagated the watchdog discourse - mainly media representatives - favoured classic libertarian press ideals; while those who propagated the nation-building discourse - mainly government representatives - favoured social responsibility ideals. On the basis of the analysis, the research challenges the dichotomy between watchdog and nation-building discourses. The author discusses how the philosophy of communitarianism might serve as a model to maintain the interests of both the media and national development in an emerging media context. In this perspective, the book is of interest to anyone studying the role of the media in transitional societies.

OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism

The Occupy movement has emerged in a historical crisis of global capitalism. It struggles for the reappropriation of the commodified commons. Communications are part of the commons of society. Yet contemporary social media are ridden by an antagonism between private corporate control (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and self-managed, commons-based activist media. In this work, Christian Fuchs analyses the contradictory dialectic of social media in the Occupy movement. Drawing on a political economy framework and interpretation of the results of the OccupyMedia! Survey, in which more than 400 Occupy activists reported on their social media use, OccupyMedia! The Occupy Movement and Social Media in Crisis Capitalism shows how activists confront the contradictions of capitalism and communication in the age of crisis and social media. The book discusses the contradiction between commercial and alternative social media and argues that the existence of a surveillance-industrial complex expressed in the PRISM system shows the urgent necessity to create social media beyond Facebook and Google.

Mina Cheon Shamanism + Cyberspace

New media theorists, performance artists, media culture commentators, and politicians have celebrated life online-the virtual unknown-as shamanic, Eastern, mysterious, transformative, and exotic. SHAMANISM + CYBERSPACE shows that this rhetoric is actually a familiar version of the other, and that imperialism is at its core. This book combines postcolonial, deconstructionist, and performance theory to reread new media theory and shamanism itself, specifically in South Korea. It unravels and reweaves discourses on originary reproduction, confronting the proliferating violence in media and nationalism. Perhaps most radically, it proposes a new theory of "media mourning" to help us see and hear shamanism colliding with contemporary media art worlds, collapsing time and space, upending gender and racial categories, and confounding the boundaries between East and West. Most importantly, the book introduces a new opening toward instigating the impossibility of the other in philosophy while critiquing how shamanism is used to image the other in cyberspace culture.Mina Cheon (Korean-American), PhD, MFA, is a new media artist, writer, and educator who divides her time between Baltimore, New York, and Seoul. W. S. Rayner, W. W. O'Shaughnessy The Conquest of German South-West Africa, 1914-1915. A Comprehensive First-Hand Account and History by Two South African Correspondents

The war for colonial AfricaThis very substantial book, written by the two South African official correspondents on the campaign, narrates the expedition in 1914-15 which led to the conquest of German South-West Africa (the region now known as Namibia). One author accompanied the Northern Army and the other, the Southern Army. During the 19th century the great powers of Europe raced to establish themselves in all corners of the globe for colonisation, trade and political influence. In the 'great scramble for Africa,' the British and German empires had established themselves, by degrees, in the east and west of the continent. In the years before the outbreak of the First World War these colonies existed, more or less, in harmony but once hostilities erupted German and British settlers found themselves living in very close proximity to hostile forces. The British had the advantage of numbers since colonisation had long been a policy, though the Germans compensated for this measure with the abilities of their military commanders and the expertise and quality of their European and locally raised troops. (South Africa itself entered the fray, its forces led by commanders who a little over a decade earlier had led the Boer burghers in their attempts to form a nation independent of the British Empire.) This campaign of mobility was fought in the searing heat of a desert region and was often a 'tip and run affair' as mounted troops traversed huge tracts of inhospitable...

Eira Martens-Edwards Social Media During the Egyptian Revolution. A Study of Collective Identity and Organizational Function of Facebook . Co

With the fall of the regimes in Tunisia and Egypt the term 'Facebook Revolution' was coined depicting the world's most popular social media platform as a condition sine qua non for the Arab revolutions. Moving on from the extreme positions of cyber-utopians and pessimists, this study identifies and analyses mechanisms of use and potential intermediary effects of social media in connection with other driving factors of mass demonstrations that led to the fall of the Mubarak regime in early 2011. Semi-structured focus interviews were carried out with social media activists in Cairo between November 20th and 24th, 2011. The qualitative content analysis of eight interviews allowed for the identification of relevant categories and sub-categories as well as possible connections between them. Additionally, a thorough analysis of the Egyptian socio-economic, political and media system in the years leading up to the revolution provides the basis for valuable and contextual conclusions. Among the key findings is the accelerating effect of social media in mobilizing the Egyptian population to take part in mass demonstrations. Whereas the organizational function is limited to online network effects rather than facilitating the coordination of protesters on the ground, a significant impact of social media on the perception of a collective identity and threshold levels relevant for individual protest behavior was identified through this research. Moreover, the findings implicat...

Babajide Ololajulo The Oil Producing Community Identity in Nigeria. A Politico-economic Resource

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject African Studies, University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the socio-political and economic issues involved in the production of oil producing and non-oil producing communities as categories of identification in Nigeria. Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

Plato and Aristotle judged that any political institution could not be discussed without their proper goals and that is the happiness of and well being of its citizens which could be achieved if the political leaders are able to secure the peace and unity of the polity they lead. Hence, the main aim of politics is virtuous pursuit of the common good of all the citizens both leaders and the lead. Machiavelli deviated from this standard and tradition set by his predecessors thereby making politics to be autonomous, having nothing to do with morality. This Machiavellian principle has raised its ugly head in Nigeria polity in the name of godfatherism. In the Nigeria situation, this Machiavelian principle has been swallowed hook line and sinker by politicians and the effect is crises of democratization, good governance and development. However, in order not to fold hands and bemoan our woes, the author uses the paradigm of his philosophic prowess to proffer some suggestion through which this threat of godfatherism can be eradicated. This book is definitely a valuable material for students, scholars, activists and all those interested in Nigeria, its current problems and its future prospects.

Despite industrial promotional measures of successive governments in Nigeria, minimal positive results have been achieved and the industrial sector remains under-developed and under-harnessed. One measure which will fasten industrial sector development is through cluster promotion hence the need for a comprehensive survey. This survey is expected to provide a useful insight into clusters in Nigeria focusing on the south-east and south-south geopolitical zones of the country with emphasis on identifying existing and potential industrial clusters in the two regions as well as major constraints inhibiting their operation. Survey findings reveal that the sectors with the highest number of existing clusters in the two geopolitical zones fall under agro-processing, followed by automobile, furniture and wood works, food, oil and gas, foundries, metals and fabrication. A list of their problems include: poor flow of information; infrastructure deficiencies; lack of adequate business networking; poor access to and supply of business development services; lack of articulated advocacy and engagement mechanisms; and skepticism about the feasibility and sustainability of joint actions.

This volume of essays on public policy challenges in the Buhari-led Nigeria is a child of necessity. In 2015 and sixteen years after the PDP assumed the leadership reins in Nigeria, it was evident to all, that Nigeria was not enjoying the best form of governance and purposeful leadership. The strength of government was absolutely lacking. Enter 2015 and the grand alliance and vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed to be the only credible alternative capable of upending the PDP and providing Nigeria the much leadership change it desired. Hope about Nigeria's prospects soared with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The hope was well founded: it reflected the high expectations generated both by the smooth transfer of power from the Jonathan administration, itself a sign of a maturing democracy, and by the scintillating campaign by candidate Buhari. It did not take long before the Buhari administration confronted the political reality of governance. The governance reality that the Buhari administration faced on assuming the reins of power consisted of his own campaign promises (tackling insecurity, combating corruption, and growing the economy -- with emphasis on reducing unemployment and diversifying the economy); unanticipated crises (resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and onset of recession); and self-inflicted injuries (delayed appointment of his cabinet, policy somersaults on foreign exchange policy, and poor management of the reces...
