Despite the substantial interest in landscape genetics from the scientific community, learning about the concepts and methods underlying the field remains very challenging. The reason for this is the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, which combines population genetics, landscape ecology, and spatial statistics. These fields have traditionally been treated separately in classes and textbooks, and very few scientists have received the interdisciplinary training necessary to efficiently teach or apply the diversity of techniques encompassed by landscape genetics. To address the current knowledge gap, this book provides the first in depth treatment of landscape genetics in a single volume. Specifically, this book delivers fundamental concepts and methods underlying the field, covering particularly important analytical methods in detail, and presenting empirical and theoretical applications of landscape genetics for a variety of environments and species. Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of landscape genetics, the book combines an introductory, textbook like section with additional sections on advanced topics and applications that are more typical of edited volumes. The chapter topics and the expertise of the authors and the editorial team make the book a standard reference for anyone interested in landscape genetics. The book includes contributions from many of the leading researchers in landscape genetics. The group of scientists we have assembled has worked on several collaborative projects over the last years, including a large number of peer reviewed papers, several landscape genetics workshops at international conferences, and a distributed graduate seminar on landscape genetics. Based on the experiences gained during these collaborative teaching and research activities, the book includes chapters that synthesize fundamental concepts and methods underlying landscape genetics (Part 1), chapters on advanced topics that deserve a more in depth treatment (Part 2), and chapters illustrating the use of concepts and methods in empirical applications (Part 3). This structure ensures a high usefulness of the book for beginning landscape geneticists and experienced researchers alike, so that it has a broad target audience. At least one of the four co editors is involved in almost every chapter of the book, thereby ensuring a high consistency and coherency among chapters.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1.3, University of Koblenz-Landau (Anglistik), language: English, abstract: The new advances and tendencies in the application of genetic science evoke ethical, social, and legal concerns, as the immense progress in genetics is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the completion of the Human Genome Project at the beginning of the 21st century and the recent progress in genetics come along with obvious benefits in genomic medicine such as better diagnosis of diseases and gene therapy. However, on the other hand, the new genetics bring along worries that the new genetics could lead to a society that is less tolerant of disability and (genetic) diversity. Moreover, after successfully having intervened in the transformation of animals and plants to human's liking, humans are now on the verge of manipulating the human genome so as to perfect the human species possibly, since the necessary genetic technology is now available. The movie Gattaca builds upon the scientific and technological advances in genetics in the late 20th century and displays a dystopian "not-too-distant" future. In the portrayed future, excessive genetic screening and embryo manipulation have brought about a rigidly hierarchical society grounded on genetic discrimination. Undeniably, there is an insurmountable social gap between these two classes. Gattaca thoughtfully portrays the lives of differ...

The development of medical technology in the last years of the 20th century has been very dynamic. Synthetic single-use products, artificial joint replacements, pacemaker technologies or minimal-invasive procedures result in a high standard of medical care. But despite of the huge progress in this field, we are presumably only at the beginning of a medical technology revolution. The 1st version of the German Medizinproduktegesetz (MPG, Medical Devices Act) came into effect on January 1, 1995. It represents the national implementation of the European directives 90/385/EEC for active implantable medical device, 93/42/EEC for medical devices and 98/79/EEC for in vitro diagnostic devices. With the implementation of this act in the EU internal market, the free movement of medical devices was established. Medical devices that are marketable in one member state of the EU are also marketable in the other EU countries. Manufacturers of medical devices can therefore place their products on the whole EU market. The CE-mark on the products is the proof of complying with the essential requirements. The Medical Devices Act guarantees the efficacy and safety of the medical device because the product has to undergo comprehensive control procedures during the design and manufacturing process. The CE-mark is a cachet for quality and efficacy. After the market access, the authorities take care of the safety for users and consumers via definition of essential requirements. This book presents the maj...
