The book explores the linkage between World Bank loan conditionalities and politics of poverty reduction in Africa. Several decades of grappling with World Bank loan conditionalities and poverty reduction strategies have, at best, yielded meager returns as poverty and underdevelopment persist. Thus,it investigated the implementation of World Bank loan conditionalities and their impact on social welfare in Nigeria. Specifically, the book is a scholarly contribution to unmask the tenuous link between loan conditionalities and politics of poverty reduction strategies in Nigeria. Fundamentally, it is divided in to six major chapters. The first chapter which is the introduction examines the methodological rigour and elegance of the study. Chapter two x-rays privatization of public enterprises; the third chapter interrogates Government funding of social welfare. In addition, chapter four explores the World Bank loan development assistance in relation to human capacity development in Nigeria; while the summary, conclusion and recommendation were in chapter five. The book is an invaluable asset in understanding while abject poverty persist in Nigeria, and Africa at large.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: A, , course: PhD, language: English, abstract: The poor, like others, too need financial products and services in order to build assets, manage consumption and mitigate risks. Microfinance, in recent times, has emerged as a powerful tool to provide access to some financial services to the poor. For decades, poverty alleviation has topped the International development agenda. United Nations Millennium Goals state that by 2015 the number of people living in extreme poverty should be half of what it was in 2000. Microfinance addresses the twin goals of financial inclusion and poverty alleviation in a way that builds self-esteem in the individual and self-sufficiency in the institution providing the financial services. Different models have emerged in microfinance delivery based on their clientele, focus area, interest rate, savings linkages, collateral, coverage and organizational/legal structure. With all the successes of the existing microfinance models, the herculean task of poverty alleviation still leaves enough space for innovative models. This study explores the potential of faith-based microfinance in complimenting the efforts of poverty alleviation and also overcoming the weaknesses in the existing models. Faith-based microfinance operate on distinct principles. The purpose of this study is to focus on the functioning of the faith based microfin...

Arinaitwe Jacklyn Makaaru Microfinance Institutions. Subsidization Effects

The original mission of microfinance was to alleviate poverty. Times have changed; microfinance has transitioned from its moral and social mission to alleviate poverty to a form of investment to suit the needs of private creditors, a phenomenon that has been referred to as 'mission drift'. Only a few microfinance institutions still maintain a solely social mission. It is well recognized that lending to the poor is very costly - both administratively and through defaults. Yet, even microfinance institutions that are profit making institutions continue to lend to the poor, and demand for microfinance services continues to grow. In studying whether microfinance institutions subsidize the more risky poor clients helps shed more light on why some institutions behave the way they do, for example by charging high interest rates or lending very small amounts. The evidence of substitution effects in microfinance institutions implies that there isn't total mission drift.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1.0, University of Applied Sciences - Bonn, language: English, abstract: Microfinance or the concept of providing small-sized loans to the unemployed poor through recent decades has transformed into an asset class that attracts commercially oriented investors from all over the world. While the majority of them still consist of institutional investors and high net worth individuals, large numbers of people who could potentially profit from a microfinance engagement lack access to appropriate investment products. Simultaneously, only a small fraction of the global funding demand of the microfinance industry is currently being met. This paper demonstrates that, for several reasons, German retail banking clients should be provided with opportunities to engage in this emerging asset class. It is shown that this client group not only can have a significant impact on poverty reduction by closing parts of the immense funding gap, but moreover it is able to gain advantages in terms of portfolio diversification from a microfinance engagement.

In Ethiopia like any other developing countries, microfinance has become one of the major strategies for poverty reduction.Despite MFIs accepting as a strategy, most of MFIs tend to focus on credit services on specific groups of people and there by forgotten their savings mobilization role. This book, therefore, examines the regulatory framework within which Microfinance institutions operate, the challenges of domestic micro savings mobilization from the Clients and Microfinance institutions perspective. Based on the results of this book, therefore, policy implications are to be put forward which can help policy makers and experts working on the field. Project Report from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, , course: Human Ecology, 38 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Food insecurity and poverty are the greatest global challenges facing the world today. Their redress is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable and inexcusable in the developing world particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Extreme poverty ravages the lives of one in every four in the developing world (i.e. 1.2 billion people). The farming of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is being promoted as a potential solution to the current high rates of malnutrition and poor health of the rural population, the degradation of tropical forests and the spread and intensification of poverty. However, the role of NTFPs in rural development in Ghana remains largely undervalued and understudied. This paper examines the contribution of NTFPs farming in enhancing poverty reduction, food security, sustainable forest management, and livelihoods improvement in the Sefwi Wiawso District (SWD) of the Western Region of Ghana. An exhaustive literature review and analysis of field data collected through administration of questionnaires, interviews and stakeholder consultations indicate that NTFPs are an important tool for addressing poverty amongst marginalised, forest-dependant communities in Ghana. 86% of farmers in SWD depend on ...

Experience suggests that trade liberalization has contributed substantially to the remarkable growth of industrialised countries. However, for various reasons many developing countries have not yet been able to integrate successfully into global markets and reap the growth-inducing and poverty-reducing benefits of trade. This book argues that while developing countries are heavily represented in the WTO - accounting for about four fifths of its membership -there is still plenty of scope for the world trading system to work more effectively in their interests. The book examines the achievements of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in reforming the world trading system and the challenges to future reforms. It begins with an overview of the genesis of the world trading system and moves on to examine the key issues as they relate to developing countries. These include further liberalization of agricultural trade; abolition of the Multifibre Arrangement; environmental and labour standards; competition policy; regional integration in South East Asia; and the implications for developing Asian countries of the liberalization of the Chinese economy and its WTO membership. Furthermore, the book discusses the links between trade liberalization and poverty reduction -drawing on the experience of Asian countries - and puts forward arguments on how trade liberalization could effect a greater reduction in poverty. This is a timely and succinct presentation of the critical issues relat...

Overindebtedness is one of the most worrying trends, as it has negative effects on the loan beneficiaries and in the same time it threatens the very existence of the sector. This field research analyses from an empirical perspective the causes and effects of overindebtedness in the specific case of the clientele ofFinanciera CREAR Arequipa S.A. in Lima Norte, Peru. It was found that overindebtedness is generated by a mix of causes related to the increased competition between microfinance institutions and to thespecific behaviours of clients confronted with an abundant credit offer. This produces a series of effects at institutional and client levels, which can be described as institutional cannibalization, clientforced‐feeding, desperate borrowing and loan bicycling.

Assessment in Online and Blended Learning Environments

Online and blended learning requires the reconstruction of instructor and learner roles, relations, and practices in many aspects. Assessment becomes an important issue in non-traditional learning environments. Assessment literacy, i.e., understanding assessment and assessment strategies, is critical for both instructors and students in creating online and blended environments that are effective for teaching and learning. Instructors need to identify and implement assessment strategies and methods appropriate to online or blended learning. This includes an understanding of the potential of a variety of technology tools for monitoring student learning and improving their teaching effectiveness. From the students’ perspective, good assessment practices can show them what is important to learn and how they should approach learning; hence, engaging them in goal-oriented and self-regulatory cognitions and behaviors. The book targets instructors, instructional designers, and educational leaders who are interested in understanding and implementing either summative or formative assessment in online and blended learning environments. This book will assist the relevant audience in the theory and practice of assessment in online and blended learning environments. Providing both a research and practice perspective, this book can help instructors make the connection between pedagogy and technology tools to maximize their teaching and student learning. Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 60-70%, University of Manchester (Institute of Development Politics and Management (IDPM)), course: Development Management, language: English, abstract: The dissertation critically discusses the partnership between local governments and 'Southern' NGOs (meaning local NGOs in developing countries), specifically looking at the effects that a close cooperation can have on the poor. Through the analysis of the key literature and selected case studies the argument is developed that fostering a certain type of partnership under favourable conditions may contribute to poverty reduction efforts in a local context. The paper examines the interaction between the two actors in the decision-making and implementation process of public policies, mainly drawing on the concept of good local governance. Here, ideas of decentralisation and civil society play an important role and nowadays often constitute an integral part of poverty reduction programmes in developing countries. The first chapter of the dissertation focuses on this linkage between local governance (including NGO participation) and improvements in public policy outcomes for local communities. Subsequently, different types of partnership between local governments and NGOs are presented and the assumed ideal-type for poverty reduction is pointed out. Sascha Huijsman The Impact of the Current Economic and Financial Crisis on Microfinance.

The recent global macroeconomic crisis creates an exceptionally interesting possibility to investigate the linkages of the microfinance sector to mainstream markets and its connections with domestic markets as well as international markets - a subject whose significance has increased in recent years due to the growing importance of microfinance as part of local financial systems of developing countries and with more and more involvement of commercial investors. Sascha Huijsman's book is one of the very few studies on this relationship. She provides a rigorous analysis of the impact of the financial crisis on microfinance institutions (MFIs) by using data from a worldwide survey with MFI managers and utilising monthly financial data of almost 60 MFIs. Although microfinance-specific characteristics, such as socially oriented, highly committed investors and the nature of microfinance enterprises, which typically operate in the informal sector, so far nourished the assumption that MFIs were isolated from the impact of fluctuations on mainstream markets, Huijsman's study convincingly shows that through different linkages microfinance is to a certain extent connected to formal market movements Interestingly, however, it turns out there are considerable differences between the impact on MFIs in different regions; especially MFIs in Eastern Europe have been affected. Moreover, MFIs offering savings services to their clients turned out to be more resilient to the crisis. Huijs...

Daniela Röttger Agricultural Finance for Smallholder Farmers. Rethinking Traditional Microfinance Risk and Cost Management Approaches

Even though traditional microfinance has successfully paved the way for offering financial services to low-income populations without traditional collateral, many microfinance institutions (MFIs) are still reluctant to move into rural areas and agricultural finance, due to the perceived high risks and costs.Daniela Röttger's research demonstrates how MFIs can mitigate risks and costs of lending to smallholder farmers by using a combination of proven traditional microfinance mechanisms while adapting specific loan features and lending mechanisms to the particularities of smallholder agriculture. She systematically compares traditional microfinance risk management mechanisms with agricultural microfinance approaches and identifies successful strategies. For this purpose, eight MFIs providing agricultural finance to smallholder farmers in four countries in East and West Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Benin, Cameroon) were interviewed and their loan features and agricultural lending mechanism were analyzed. The study shows that MFIs can successfully serve smallholder farmers in rural areas. However, the extent of adaptations is reason enough not to commit to such an endeavor lightly. A strong commitment combined with sound in-house knowledge of agricultural value chains and the flexibility to adapt loan terms and lending procedures to the particularities of agriculture are needed to successfully develop and sustain agricultural microfinance.

However, what these programmes lack is an efficient monitoring system to track progress from poverty alleviation interventions. This work establishes a customized baseline poverty profile that will serve as a reference point for monitoring Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRSP).This work is especially suitable for developing countries that have devolved decades of Central Administrative Controls to Local and District Councils. Over the years, monetary parameters were used to assess rural poverty. This work uses non-monitoring indicators grouped into demographic, basic needs, assets, means of livelihood, social services and empowerment structures to determine poverty status of the population in an effort to evaluate the impact of development initiative. The analysis of this work should help local and district council officers to address the central issues in their effort at poverty alleviation. This work is especially useful also to Development Practitioners, Professionals in development and Administrators interested in eradicating poverty in the developing world.

Worldwide child and youth poverty and deprivation remain the biggest barrier to achieving a better life in adulthood. Progress in lifting children out of poverty in the last decades has been slow and limited in the developing world, while the recent global economic crisis has exacerbated child poverty, youth unemployment, and social exclusion in many developed countries. By critically unraveling the long-term consequences of growing up poor, the close linkages between multiple deprivations and violation of human rights in childhood and adolescence, and their effects on labor market entry and future career in a number of developing and developed countries, this book significantly enriches the existing literature. Drawing on multiple disciplinary perspectives, it makes a forceful case for the eradication of child poverty to take center stage in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Despite this increasing interest, one aspect of microfinance has been largely neglected both scientifically and in its application: Islamic Microfinance. In this paper I will discuss, if the principles of the Shari'ah (the Islamic law) are not somewhat compatible with the needs and obstacles of microfinance, where stewardship is to be shared and trust crucial. Further, I will discuss in detail if the prohibition of Riba is a serious, insolvable obstacle and if it is really more expensive for microfinance institutes to provide Muslims with financial services. By comparing traditional instruments of microfinance with new, transferred instruments borrowed from Islamic banking, I will try to explain - on the bases of the Islamic culture - why people are surprised about the neglect of Islamic Microfinance. The hypotheses are as follows• The implementation of Islamic financial products causes too high risks for microfinance institutes. The restriction of involving 'risk' in financial contracts for both parties by the Islam is binding. Therefore, m...

ASM Rejaul Karim Bakshi Repayments in Group Lending Microfinance

Group lending microfinance program has gained its fame from the success of many microfinance institutions across the world. Prior to the microfinance revolution in 1970s, formal lending institutions vehemently considered that poorer people cannot be banked and cannot repay a loan lacking collateral to guarantee. One potential solution to these problems was pioneered during the late 1970s as group lending microfinance, thanks to Nobel laureate Professor M Yunus at Grameen Bank, Bangladesh. Group lending induces borrowers to self select their peer, monitor each others and enforce repayment at the end. Group lending is thus considered as the key factor behind the high rates of repayment and the success story of many microfinance institutions. In this book the mechanism of group lending is examined with theoretical rigour and justified with empirical evidences. The book is specially suitable for the professionals in microfinance, NGO personnel, policy makers, donor agencies and graduate and research students of economics and finance

An important guide to assessing and managing the environment from a landscape perspective Ecological relationships are nested within the landscape. Identifying the relevant spatial and temporal scales is critical for an effective understanding of ecological functions that human societies depend upon. Moreover, human encroachment into natural areas, or changes in climate, can alter spatial relationships, which in turn can negatively affect vital plant and wildlife patterns—and weaken economic structures needed to sustain human societies. This book is the first to combine multiple disciplines into one cohesive strategy to study these crucial connections, and looks toward building a social paradigm that embraces the dynamics of ecological systems. This book: Integrates landscape ecology, environmental risk assessment, valuation of ecological goods and services, and environmental management decision processes into one single source Includes chapters on quantitative measures, Bayesian modeling,¿economic analysis, and sustainable landscapes Covers marine, forest, agricultural, and pharmaceutical risk assessment Has a chapter on predicting climate change risk to ecosystems Has a companion ftp site with color graphics, animations, and risk assessment tools With material that is accessible across all knowledge levels, Environmental Risk Assessment and Management from a Landscape Perspective moves beyond looking solely at chemical contaminants to diagnose environmental threats, and aims to accomplish practical risk assessment in a manner that supports long-term sustainable management.

Onyejelam Emem The role of Law in promoting renewable energy development in Nigeria

The energy crisis in Nigeria is such that has brought about development setbacks, environmental degradation, increased poverty rate, etc and these must be addressed to bring about socio-economic development. The key to improving energy access lies in the ability of the government to include renewable energy sources like solar, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, as part of the nation's energy mix. However, the government can only achieve this feat where private investors (domestic and foreign) are actively involved. The Renewable energy industry in Nigeria is driven by Policies and most recently, the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, 2015. Policies in Nigeria have been criticised for lacking in implementation, consistency, stability and lacking binding effects. These factors send the wrong signals to potential investors who need to be assured of security over investments made. Thus, it is therfore pertinent to have a legislation on renewable energy that would complement already existing policies and guarantee justice in event of a breach. The law can create an enabling environment for potential investors to drive renewable energy development in Nigeria.

Roberto Cui Oil Multinationals in Nigeria. Human Rights, Sustainable Development and the Law

Decades of irresponsible oil exploitation in the Niger Delta have caused a water and air pollution which does not have many comparisons anywhere else. In an already fragile country as Nigeria, characterised by weak democratic institutions and poor economic governance, this situation has led to increasing discontent and violence towards both the government and the oil multinationals. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them from achieving a sustainable development, violating their human rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This book analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the local people's standards of life, and to make Nigeria emerge as a socio-environmentally responsible African resource-rich country.

In addition, the book details a variety of reliability analysis methods that are needed during all stages of a safety-critical system, beginning with specification and design and advancing to operations, maintenance, and modification control. The key categories of safety life-cycle phases are featured, including strategies for the allocation of reliability performance requirements; assessment methods in relation to design; and reliability quantification in relation to operation and maintenance. Issues and benefits that arise from complex modern technology developments are featured, as well as: Real-world examples from large industry facilities with major accident potential and products owned by the general public such as cars and tools Plentiful worked examples throughout that provide readers with a deeper understanding of the core concepts and aid in the analysis and solution of common issues when assessing all facets of safety-critical systems Approaches that work on a wide scope of applications and can be applied to the analysis of any safety-critical system A brief appendix of probability theory for reference With an emphasis on how safety-critical functions are introduced into systems and facilities to prevent or mitigate the impact of an accident, this book is an excellent guide for professionals, consultants, and operators of safety-critical systems who carry out practical, risk, and reliability assessments of safety-critical systems. Reliability of Safety-Critical Systems: Theory and Applications is also a useful textbook for courses in reliability assessment of safety-critical systems and reliability engineering at the graduate-level, as well as for consulting companies offering short courses in reliability assessment of safety-critical systems.
