Susan Muthalaly Tamil Identity in Cinema During War and Conflict

This book studies the representation of identity politics in the Indian Tamil film Kannathil Muthamittal, which deals with the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict. Drawing on the influential role of cinema in politics on the Indian subcontinent, and the perceived shared identity of the Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and India, the book researches the film in relation to the conflict. It discusses the differences in conception of the Indian Tamil identity and the Sri Lankan Tamil identity (in the film), and argues that the Indian Tamil is represented as politically and culturally superior and more empowered than the Sri Lankan Tamil. Using existing literature on identity formation and the socio-cultural history of Tamil identities of Sri Lanka and India as a reference point, the representation of the two Tamil identities in the film are analysed.

'Standard Spoken Language in School and Media Domain: A case study of Singapore' aims to examine the corpus of Standard Spoken Tamil (SST) in the media and school domains in Singapore, in order to establish SST as an additional resource for the teaching and learning of Tamil. The rationale for this study is that it will lead to instructional strategies that seek to redress the disjunction in the pedagogic context where only one monolithic norm, that of Literary Tamil (LT) prevails. In Singapore, more and more Primary one students are coming from English speaking homes. Given that general situation, Tamil students are able to write well and efficient in using the Literary Tamil variety which is used in formal situation and unable to speak or converse in Spoken Tamil which is the variety used for day to day communication. To develop the oral skills and to make Tamil as a living language in Singapore, students need to speak in Spoken Tamil and understand the diglossic background of Tamil language. This book addresses those issues and provides pedagogical recommendations.

Ragunath Gnanasekaran Impact of Climate Change on Major Crops in Tamil Nadu

Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. There are a number of reasons for global climate change, examples of which include the increased intensity of solar energy or the cyclicality of Earth's temperatures, volcanism, oceanic circulation cycles, biosphere impact, ultraviolet radiation variability, reflectivity, rotational variation, solar systemic changes, galaxy positional variability, albedo, human influence and so on. The present research analyse on the impact of climate change on major crops in Tamil Nadu. It is observed from the study more that there is no impact of climate change on major crops. The major crops present a very little change in the productivity due to change in climate. Their co-efficient of variations are more or less uniform except for cotton the variation in cotton is observed in the latter half of the period of study. Its rise in productivity may due to the adoption of new technology in cultivation and the use of modern implements in agriculture. Thus climate change has no direct impact of major crops.

Kalidas Kalimuthu Pricing Analysis, Pricing Variability . Price Forecast of Tomato in India

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 9.80, , course: Agri Business Management, language: English, abstract: STUDY ON PRICING VARIABILITY OF TOMATO IN WESTERN TAMIL NADU India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world, contributing 14% of the total world vegetables production. In India, tomato is the most widely grown vegetable crop with a share of 10 per cent and occupies third position. In this crop we observe more price variation due to increased supply of tomato than market demand which leads to glut in market followed by price reduction. The above price fluctuation was found to be significant which affects the economy of small and marginal farmers who are mostly involved in cultivation of tomato. For the benefit and welfare of these farmers it becomes necessary to forecast the tomato price. Based on these forecast, farmers can make cropping decision and avoid economic losses. The study conducted in western Tamil Nadu for past five month revealed that tomato price will raise in April which is forecasted through three month moving average. These are the prices of 10 kg tomato in the following markets, Kinathukadavu-Rs.73.6, Pollachi- Rs.107.9, Mettuppalayayam- Rs.47.7, Oddanchatram- Rs.55.5. Farmers are using the traditional marketing channels for marketing the tomato though there are latest developments like farmers shandy (Uzhavar chanthai). Only minimum quantities of tomato are being sold through farmers shandy and re...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: None, , course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: AN ANALYSIS ON THE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY OF SELECTED SUGAR MILLS IN THE STATE OF TAMILNADU, INDIAAbstract:Under the structured Industrial Development Policy in India, sugar industry was part of the Five-Year Plans introduced in 1951 and has been under the direct control of the Governmentever since. Sugar industry is highly politicized and so closely controlled by the Government which has no parallel in the industry. Government control, covers all aspects of sugar business i.e., licensing/capacity/cane area/procurement/sugar pricing/distribution and imports and exports. Sugar scene in India has been that of protectionism. Overall government policy has given impressive results. Competition became intense and customers more demanding on quality and service. A moot question that arises in this context is that because of low productivity in agriculture and the increasing competition faced, to what extent the Indian sugar industry could be financially viable. This doubt is attempted to be clarified by examining a sample of sugar industries operating in the state of Tamil Nadu. With the industrial development, the present study attempts to examine the financial performance on the one hand and the productivity of the sample sugar industry of TamilNadu on the other. Jeba Mary M. V. Karuna, Karthikeyan C. Role of tank irrigation system in sustaining the livelihood of SHG.s

Tank irrigation systems of India are a century old. Tanks have been the main source of irrigation in many parts of India from time immemorial. Rainfall pattern is neither predictable nor uniform over space and the incidence of rainfall is also seasonal, occurring mainly during the southwest monsoon in most of the country except the rain shadow areas of the Western Ghats, notably Tamil Nadu. Tanks are one of the oldest sources of irrigation in India and the mainstay for the livelihood of many poor households. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood in rural areas, which account for 75 per cent of India's population and 80 per cent of its poor, and in turn, irrigation is the base for about 56 per cent, possibly more of total agricultural output. Tanks in the Indian context were inextricably linked to the socio-cultural aspects of rural life and have historically been an indispensable part of the village habitat, sustaining its socio-ecological balance. In this regard the present study is contemplated.

The purpose of this research was to develop an automated system to monitor and control specific growth conditions in order to improve the algae biomass production process. This research required the planning and installation of a control cabinet on a flat plate photobioreactor, components selection, installation of sensors and software programming in LabVIEW. The result of this research was a system that monitors the basic environmental growth parameters, which are temperature, light and pH. In addition to the monitoring system, a control system for light and CO2 flow was integrated to simulate specific growth conditions of microalgae. Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , course: Agricultural Economics, language: English, abstract: This study aimed to analyze the technical efficiency of sesame production in Humera area and to identify major factors that cause efficiency differentials of smallholder farmers. The objective of the study is to measure the technical efficiency of small holder farmers in sesame production. The study was conducted using a cross sectional data collected in 2015/2016-production year from a total sample of 110 households. Cobb-Douglas function was employed to estimate technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in sesame production. The finding of the study indicated that there is inefficiency in the production of sesame in the study area. The estimation of the frontier model with inefficiency variables shows that the mean technical efficiency of farmers is 0.69 (69%). This implies that production of sesame can be increased by 31 percent given the existing technological level. This indicates that the farmers did not using production inputs efficiently in such a way that they give their maximum potential. The estimated stochastic production frontier model together with the inefficiency parameters suggests that any attempt to strengthen technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in the study area must give due attention to the improvement of the principal causes for efficiency differentials such as education, age, ...

At one time, more than one million sheep roamed the grassy areas of Arizona. Herding sheep was a critical component of the economy, building Arizona from its early territorial days into statehood. Fortunes were made, and, during economic downturns and other disasters, some lost everything. By the 1890s, sheepherding was a major enterprise in Arizona. Today, just over 180,000 sheep live in the state.Where Have All the Sheep Gone? details the untold story of the sheep industry in Arizona starting in the 1500s when the Spanish conquistadors began their push northward from Mexico and brought the first sheep as a food source. Arizona’s sheep industry is a rich history that has never been comprehensively told -- until now. Author Dr. Barbara G. It tells the compelling story of the families who worked diligently and proudly through successes and failures -- including droughts, range wars, and economic hard times due to government regulations and a shrinking workforce. Despite many challenges, the sheep industry managed to grow and make huge strides. Some families are still making their living from sheep today, trying to preserve a way of life that...

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Biology - Zoology, grade: B, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Animal Science - Norwegian University of Life Sciences), course: Aquaculture - Tilapia, language: English, abstract: This literature review has been written to examine different tilapia farming practises both in semi-intensive and extensive systems. Extensive culture is not mentioned sine it is not considered to be a real commercial production as the control over the system is quite limited and even semi-intensive system is being replaced by intensive system due to technological developments, high demand and increasing market prices of tilapa. In first chapter, environmental and nutritional requirements are also mentioned as they are closely correlated play a key role in a succesful production. The results of some recent studies and experiments suggest that tilapia has some superiority over other culture fish like faster growth, ability to utilize different feeds, wide tolerance for high stocking densities and environmental conditions. In addition to these advantages, tilapia do very well in integrated culture systemsboth with aquatic species; carp and shrimps, also crops like tomato and lettuce as well. As a result this study is conducted to prove the advantages of commercialtilapia production covering economic values.

Ahmed Zheno Water Production Problem in Oilfields

Water production has been introduced as a severe and complicated issue in oil industry over the last two decades, and its' control has always been one of the most critical challenges in the oil fields. During the production life of oil wells, water is produced from the producer well due to the encroachment of water from aquifer or injected water in the reservoir, and sometimes the volume of water produced is much higher than the volume of oil produced. However, water can play an important role in maintaining reservoir pressure; it needs to be shut off when its' percentage reaches uneconomical limits. Excessive water production in oil fields results in a restriction of oil production and creates several production problems, including high lifting cost, producing corrosion and scale in production facilities and even sand production. In addition, high costs are incurred to separate, treat and dispose of the produced water. Produced water also contains organic and inorganic minerals which have a substantial negative impact on the environment.

Hendrik Wilz Workload balancing capabilities of load based pull production control systems

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,7, University of Groningen (Economics and Business), language: English, abstract: Pull systems can be simple but effective production control systems. However, most pull systems do not perform well with random processing times and have a limited applicability for the MTO sector. The systems do not achieve a decent reduction of total throughput times (TTT) or only under special conditions. The unsolved problem is how to design a load-based system that is able to perform well with random processing times. To overcome this problem a load-based pull system with an adapted release mechanism is proposed. Pull systems need to balance the workload effectively over the different routes and stations in order to reduce TTT. By prioritizing orders regarding their size, the adapted release mechanism balances the workload within the routes and between the different routes. A discrete event simulation with several sets of experiments was conducted to test this release mechanism in a load-based system and compare it to various other pull systems. The results show an improved performance of the proposed system compared to the other systems. The magnitude of this performance improvement strongly depends on the used ratio of large to small orders.

Woollard made major contributions to progressive manufacturing management practices in the British automobile industry of the 1920s, and was also the first to develop and implement mechanical materials handling equipment known as automatic transfer machines while working at Morris Motors Ltd., Engines Branch, in Coventry, U.K. His work is comparable to that of the legendary Taiichi Ohno, the principal architect of Toyota Motor Corporation's production system, and suggests that the timeline for discoveries and attributions of key accomplishments must be revised.Woollard deserves widespread recognition for his own groundbreaking achievements, which lie between the time of Henry Ford and Kiichiro Toyoda, the founder of Toyota Motor Corporation. His work is highly relevant to current-day Lean management, in that he understood the idea and practice of continuous improvement in a flow environment. Woollard also recognized that flow production will not work properly if used by management in a zero-sum manner, which is an insig...

The common call for sustainable development from a growing share of consumers and political authorities alike has become a crucial business driver for automotive companies and an essential prerequisite for corporate competitiveness. Therefore, it is only consequent that business mission statements on sustainability can be found in nearly every larger manufacturer's public appearance. However, in order to walk the talk, characteristics of sustainability must be an inherent traitof an organization. For production to adopt normative management decisions, the production strategies are to be aligned with the superior business mission. Hence, sustainability-oriented measures should be expected to exist in any larger automobile manufacturer's strategic-tactical production planning. This is where this paper sets in. In chapter 2, a framework for strategic-tactical production planning is derived from literature and serves as center of reference for the entire work. In this part, the importance of an integrated and sustainabilityorientedproduction management is pointed out. Sustainable automobile production links the two major chapters of this work.In cha...

The chronic shortage of labour in Kerala and the resultant higher wage rates received the attention among the workers from other states and they began to move to Kerala in search of work. This has opened a new era of replacement migration to Kerala. This led to the state again become an in-migrating state after a break of about 60 years since the 1960s. Though initially the in-migrants in Kerala were from the neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh mostly seasonal and short-duration migration, at a later period the state started getting migrants from far distant states. This book analyzes the working, living and economic conditions of in-migrant workers, the expenditure pattern of in-migrants and also examine the factors that influence the amount of remittances send back to their left behind. The analysis is based on data from a sample of 109 in-migrants workers in the Mannarkkad Panchayat, Palakkad District. While existing studies on in-migration in Kerala provide evidences for short distance migration from nearby states to Kerala, This study observed the long distance migration from far distant states.

Ziteya Talkmore The Economics of goat milk production

Although goat production occurs throughout the country, goat milk production is limited and is only undertaken in the semi-arid regions in the south western parts of the country. Dairy goat production has been gaining popularity in many countries around the world in the recent years among the small scale farmers. There, however, has not been much attention given to goat milk production in the smallholder areas despite its nutritional, health, and potential for niche export markets. This book therefore ascertains the primary reasons for keeping goats in smallholder areas where goats are milked, determines and analyzes the socio-economic factors influencing goat milk production. The book shows the potential that exist to stimulate goat milk production in the smallholder areas targeting improved disease control through accessibility of veterinary medicines and vaccines.Government and research organizations can deliberately formulate strategies to introduce improved goat milk breeds and promote the development of para-veterinary programs as a way of diversifying income sources and promoting the development and eventual commercialization of goat milk production in Zimbabwe.

Benedicto Msangya, James Nyangas Inaccessibility of Road Transport to Farmers

Tanzania economy depends on agriculture as its main stay, but still rural farmers suffer from poor road transport and high cost of transport of products to markets. Problems in transport sector affect agricultural production in two ways. Firstly, the time and energy spent on transport related activities reduce labour productivity because the transport charges have led the price of fertilizers to be very high, hence reduces the profits which labour could get. Secondly, increased market costs as a result of inadequate and poorly maintained roads that are passed on to farmers in terms of low farm -gate price. In many food-growing areas, crops are carried in many kilometers by head to the assembly markets or roadsides. Despite the efforts made by the government concerning road transport, still there is inadequate agricultural production in rural areas. Because of this structure of human settlement and production, road transport system assumes an extraordinarily important role in the economic development of an area. The study evaluates the impact of road transport on agricultural production. It was conducted at Mikese, Kiroka, Kinole and Mkambarani wards located in Morogoro District.

Sean Edward Humphrey Mapping and Scheduling Algorithms for Synchronized Individual Production

To satisfy market demand for efficiency, short lead-times and just-in-time delivery, the principle of synchronized production is now being applied to the production of highly individualized products in the machine tool manufacturing sector. While the benefits of this production principle on the factory floor are significant, the complexity and overhead of the associated production planning is considerable. This dissertation, written at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany, presents algorithms to automate the two primary short-term planning activities for synchronized individual manufacturing. To ensure industrial applicability, the underlying research was conducted in close collaboration with three large automotive suppliers.
