Malnutrition and infection are invariably linked together each aggravating the other. Cell-mediated immunity, a function of the T-cells is markedly depressed by malnutrition. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS acts by destroying the T-cells which are actively involved in the defense of the body against viruses, fungi, parasites, bacteria and destruction of cancer cells. There is a need for HIV/AIDS infected persons to know and build a positive attitude towards dietary management of HIV/AIDS to prolong and improve their quality of lives. This book outlines the knowledge and attitudes towards the role of nutrition management of HIV/AIDS among the infected and affected.

The insulin receptor is a cell surface glycoprotein that mediates the action of insulin upon target cells. The receptor was originally identified by its ability to bind the hormone. Over the past two decades, considerable progress has been made in defining the structure of the receptor molecule as well as the biochemical mechanism by which it mediates insulin action. In addition, the insulin receptor has been identified as a target for pathological processes in human disease. Identification of mutations has elucidated the molecular mechanisms that cause disease in patients. In addition, the mutations have provided significant in sights into the structure and function of the insulin receptor. This book reports all the known mutations in insulin receptor gene and its clinical significance.

It examines how stigma and discrimination in a higher institution of learning are exacerbating HIV and AIDS epidemic among the youths. Those on Anti-Retroviral Therapy cannot publicly take their medication as those suffering from Diabetes or Blood Pressure. Hence, the work is partially a response to the clarion call that 'We can't be silent' on HIV and AIDS epidemic or even do contemporary education without engaging with the HIV epidemic. At GZU, the problem is still an incipient concrete existential reality that should be nipped in the bud.

A much-needed primer on the use of laser flow cytometry for stem cell analysis Laser flow cytometry is a powerful tool for rapid analysis of cells for marker expression, cell cycle position, proliferation, and apoptosis. However, no resources specifically address the use of this methodology for the study of stem cells; this is especially important as stem cell analysis involves specialized methods and staining procedures based on specific characteristics such as marker expression, cell size, drug transport, and efflux of the stem cells. Now, this book reviews these procedures, discusses the science behind them, and provides real-world examples to illustrate the usefulness of the methods. It brings together world-class experts in pathology, biophysics, immunology, and stem cell research, who draw upon their extensive experience with the methods and show examples of good data to help guide researchers in the right direction. Chapter coverage includes: Stem cell analysis and sorting using side population Flow cytometry in the study of proliferation and apoptosis Stem cell biology and application Identification and isolation of very small embryonic-like stem cells from murine and human specimens Hematopoietic stem cells—issues in enumeration Human embryonic stem cells: long-term culture and cardiovascular differentiation Limbal stem cells and corneal regeneration Flow cytometric sorting of spermatogonial stem cells Breast cancer stem cells Stem cell marker expression in cells from body cavity fluids This book is an essential resource for all graduate students, practitioners in developing countries, libraries and book repositories of universities and research institutions, and individual researchers. It is also of interest to laboratories engaged in stem cell research and use of stem cells for tissue regeneration, and to any organization dealing in stem cell and tissue regeneration research.

The impact of HIV/AIDS goes beyond individuals infected with the pandemic to reach broadly into the society, both disrupting the functioning of communities and complicating prevention and its treatment. Given the increased quality and length of life of persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), many organizations are faced with the challenge of accommodating PLWHAs. This study focused on the perceptions of employees towards working with HIV/AIDS infected co-workers at Fedics Food Services in Eastern Cape. The study was done to shade light on the willingness of employees to work with HIV/AIDS colleagues regardless of whether they exist in the organization or not. The study was a quantitative research whereby self administered questionnaires were distributed to respondents. Descriptive data analysis was used to establish employee perceptions on HIV/AIDS and the chi-square was used to determine the levels of significance of each response. The results showed that employees at Fedics Food services were willing to work with HIV/AIDS infected co-workers.

A comprehensive review of the most current scientific research on ABC transporters and multidrug resistance ATP-binding cassette transporter genes (ABC transporters) are known to play a crucial role in the development of multidrug resistance (MDR). MDR is the ability of pathologic cells, such as tumors, to withstand chemicals designed to target and destroy such cells. In MDR, patients who are on medication eventually develop resistance to not only the drug they are taking, but to several different types of drugs. ABC Transporters and Multidrug Resistance offers an essential resource for pharmaceutical researchers who are working to discover drugs to counteract multidrug resistance in diseases such as cancer. In one comprehensive volume, this book contains a collection of the most current knowledge on the involvement of ABC transporters in drug transport and resistance. This comprehensive volume provides an overview on the description of the structure, the genome, normal tissue expression, physiological aspect, and mechanism of action of the ABC protein. The expert contributors explore the expression, detection, and implications of ABC proteins in hematological malignancies and solid tumors and ABC proteins and pathogenic microorganisms. This volume also explains MDR modulation through inhibition of ABC transporters and the design of inhibitors and mechanism of action. In addition, the book offers essential information on the biological and clinical aspect of multidrug resistance.

The study described in this book presents the effects of erythropoietin on Telomerase activity and regulation in malignant and non- malignant non-erythroid cells. Erythropoietin's exposure upregulates telomerase activity in a post translational level by the Lyn/SRC AKT axis. Inhibition of telomerase that shortens telomeres abolished that effect, suggesting that erythropoietin's treatment might be given with anti- telomerase compounds to minimize the upregulation of telomerase in the cancer cells.

Ageing is a complex, time-related biological phenomenon that is genetically determined and environmentally modulated. According to even the most pessimistic projections, average lifespan is expected to increase around the world during the next 20 years, significantly raising the number of aged individuals. But increasing life expectancy presents new problems, and industrialized countries are facing a pronounced increase in lifestyle diseases which constitute barriers to healthy ageing. Anti-Ageing Nutrients: Evidence-based Prevention of Age-Associated Diseases is written by a multi-disciplinary group of researchers, all interested in the nutritional modulation of ageing mechanisms. Structured in three parts, Part 1 looks at the cellular modifications that underlie senescence of cells and ageing of the organisms; the effects of energy restriction on cellular and molecular mechanisms and in the whole organism; and the epigenetic modifications associated with ageing. Part 2 includes chapters which discuss the nutritional modulation of age-associated pathologies and the functional decline of organs, with a focus on those primarily affected by chronological ageing. Part 3 summarises the knowledge presented in the previous chapters and considers the best diet pattern for the aged individuals. The book reflects the most recent advances in anti-ageing nutrition and will be a valuable resource for professionals, educators and students in the health, nutritional and food sciences.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) counseling and testing provides an entry point to comprehensive HIV/AIDS management. In Africa, most women attending antenatal clinics are usually counseled and tested for HIV only once that is during the initial visit and yet there is chance that they could contract HIV later on in pregnancy. Moreover, the women could also be in window period at the time of initial testing and could eventually turn HIV positive. Failure to repeat the test therefore later on in pregnancy leaves a gap in Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT). This book churns out first hand evidence of HIV incidence among erstwhile HIV negative pregnant women in Kakamega County - Kenya. The book also looks at factors that influence the decisions of the women to retest for HIV. The recommendations from this book provide practical solutions to governments and agencies in developing nations and the world at large by helping the policy makers craft strategies to curb Mother to Child Transmission of HIV.

First published in 1972 to celebrate the centennial of the publication of Darwin's, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, it is the first of three works edited by Dr. Ekman and others on the subject. This Malor edition contains new and updated references.Darwin claimed that we cannot understand human emotional expression without understanding the emotional expressions of animals, as our emotional expressions are in large part determined by our evolution. Not only are there similarities in the appearance of some emotional expressions between man and certain other animals, but the principles which explain why a particular emotional expression occurs with a particular emotion also apply across species.Paul Ekman is co-author of Unmasking the Face (Malor Books, 2003) and more than thirteen other titles. Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Biology - Zoology, grade: 1,0, University of Innsbruck (Zoologie), 90 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The transcription factor GATA-1 is essential for the development of the erythroid cell lineage in vertebrates. In this article we introduce a method to easily determine the approximately development status of red blood cells and the progression of blood formation by intensity of fluorescence in GATA-1/Ds-Red marked zebrafish. We classified the blood cells on the basis of their fluorescence intensity in 5 intensity stages (IS) with the brightest in IS 1. The comparison with our erythropoietin (Epo) data showed a noticable correlation between GATA-1, Epo mRNA and EPO protein level. Between 2 and 3 dpf we observed a major increase in blood cell concentration to circa 1200 cells*nl-1, until 15 dpf this value decreased to about the half. The appearance of IS 1 cells correspond approximately to the peaks in Epo cRNA copies and the highest values in EPO protein emerged about 1 day later. Our data show that the blood cell concentration, Epo and Gata-1 expression in zebrafish larvae is subjected to large fluctuations in the first few days of development.

The normal response to injury is usually an inflammatory reaction, deposition of new extracellular matrix that incorporates various growth factors, influx of inflammatory cells and regeneration of lost epithelial cells. Regeneration involves migration, proliferation and differentiation of stem cells to cover the exposed area. In the lung bronchiolar region Clara cell are thought to be the progenitor cells. We have studied changes in cell cycle and behaviour of lung epithelial cells in several models of lung injury and in vitro primary culture. We investigated the expression of the cell cycle control genes, p21, p53, PCNA and p27, in mouse models of three important human diseases mainly fibrosis, asthma and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

In the era of globalization and increased movement of people crossing borders, immigrants especially from HIV prone countries to the western world have been singled out as one of the 'risk groups' by host nations. In countries like Sweden, where multicultural society is in the making, HIV prevention programs have targeted immigrants more than others. However, HIV infections are still on the increase and HIV prevention strategies and methods have been questioned. This book explores the views of HIV prevention workers drawn from immigrants themselves and closely examines explanations from structural to specific contextual factors for the challenges of HIV prevention in multicultural neighborhoods of Gothenburg city in Sweden. The study surfaces out new dimensions that have not been sufficiently addressed by concerned bodies in HIV prevention efforts. The analysis from this study would help policy makers, professionals, HIV practitioners and ordinary people especially in the western world, where immigrants are significant proportion of society.

Despite abundant activated Human T cell Lymphotropic Virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-specific Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes (CTL), patients with HTLV-1-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP) show a significantly higher frequency of infected cells than Asymptomatic Carriers (AC) of the virus. In order to further characterise the CTL response to HTLV-1, an assay to quantify specific T cell effector functions was developed. I analysed degranulation (by CD107 mobilisation) and cytokine (IFN-γ and TNF-α) expression by both HTLV-1-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells in response to HTLV-1 Tax peptide. This study shows a trend of the frequency of degranulating CD8+ T cells to be higher in HAM/TSP patients, however at a given proviral load the rate of lysis of infected cells tend to be higher in ACs than in HAM/TSP patients. Interestingly, only the frequency of CTL degranulation correlated with the rate of killing of target cells, suggesting that CTL killing of target cells depends mainly on degranulation.

T cell signal transduction is not a linear pathway, but involves multiple components acting as a network. Though CD8 T cells are capable of being stimulated with a brief stimulus, recent studies have brought to focus the persistence of signaling in T cells post synaptic engagement. Though these signals are not strong enough for direct detection, their effect on functional maturity of T cells is ascertained by functional assays. Different outcomes of activated T cells do exhibit a certain level of hierarchy in the order of activation and the strength of signal required for each. The intracellular signaling components seem to form modules involved in persistence of signaling in T cells. This book provides an overview of T cell activation focusing on CD8 T cells.

Epigenetic agents such as DNA methyltransferase inhibitors and inhibitors of histone deacetylase are currently used in clinical studies to reverse altered histone modifications and aberrant DNA methylation which can lead to tumor growth. Because epigenetic modifications are functionally equivalent to genetic changes and some have been linked to tumorigenic events, researchers have attempted to identify epigenetic mechanisms that may lead to disease such as cancer. Recent data has shown that the use of these agents positively influence the induction of down-modulated immunoactive(e.g. MHC class I or II), co-stimulatory and adhesive molecules on tumor cells, cytokine production and the expression of tumor-rejecting antigens. Therefore, the anti-tumor therapeutic potential of these agents is promising and are welcomed additions to the medicinal arsenal currently used in the fight against cancer.

The study on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the livestock-producing communities of Uganda was carried out in Kashumba and Moyo sub counties. There was no clear data that supported the impact of HIV/AIDS on livestock producing communities on labour, decision-making, grazing and watering time and factors that aggravated its effects. Data were collected using semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation guides and review of secondary data. The study showed that there was reduction in the availability of labour for grazing and watering livestock in both Moyo and Kashumba; There was shift in decision-making and implementation from ailing household heads to selected household members. There was significant negative changes in livestock grazing and sale of livestock products in households affected by HIV/AIDS compared to those non affected. Furthermore, there was reduction in grazing and watering time for livestock activities. It was observed that daily animal source foods reduced in the affected households. The study recommended that HIV/AIDS mitigation measures be intergrated in the livestock sector plans that will create HIV/AIDS competent communities in Uganda.

The model of irreversible bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis shows that simultaneously with inflammatory cells in interstitial lung tissue of mice C57BL/6 cells with the phenotype Lin–, Sca-1+, c-Kit+, CD34– (HSCs) and hematopoietic progenitor cells (Lin–, Sca-1+, c-Kit+) are identified. During the phase of inflammation, HSCs of bleomycin lungs are characterized with high mitotic activity and the ability to differentiate into myeloid cell. Interstitial infiltration of alveolar ducts and alveoli by immature hematopoietic cells is accompanied by an increase in the level of multipotent progenitor cells in bone marrow and blood. Two subpopulations of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs): 1 - (CD45-, CD73+, CD90+, CD44+, CD106+) and 2 - (CD45-, CD73+, CD90+, CD31-, CD34-) are defined in the parenchyma of bleomycin lungs upon the collagen deposition and fibroblast progenitor cells admission. MSCs are characterized by high mitotic activity and differentiation in the direction of fibroblast cells, while chondrogenesis and bone formation is disrupted. Neurotropic drugs modulate the activity of endogenous stem cells and thereby they can influence on the inflammation and fibrosis in lungs of mice.

The present book studies the effectiveness of routine nutrition assessment offered to improve the nutrition status, well-being and quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS attending HIV treatment and care at Hewu Hospital in Chris Hani District of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. With the knowledge that HIV and malnutrition are interlinked, a great need for on-going nutritional assessment becomes critical in the treatment and care of people living with HIV and AIDS. In the absences of ARV treatment , people living with HIV and AIDS have a tendency to lose weight and ultimately become undernourished. At the same time ARV treatment is known to be associated with longer life span hence people living with HIV and AIDS tend to gain weight becoming overweight or obese.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignancy of plasma cells (PCs) which accumulate in the bone marrow (BM), thus, leading to anemia, bone lesions, hypercalcemia, renal impairment and immune dysfunction. T regulatory (Treg) cells maintain immune homeostasis in healthy individuals by patrolling unwanted immune responses. Whereas in cancer patients, these cells are uncontrollably expanded, thereby, inhibiting the host anti-tumor responses. Majorly this work is focused to understand the role of Treg cells, including CD4 Treg cells and CD8 Treg cells in rendering the immune impairments in MM patients. This study clearly showed that both CD4 and CD8 Treg cells were functionally suppressive and increased in MM patients. These findings were confirmed by using different methods, including flow cytometry, functional and molecular studies (RT-PCR and western blot). Clinical significance of this study was CD4 Treg cells were found to be increased in patients with shorter time to progression, hypercalcemia, lower normal PC counts (≤ 5%) and IgA myeloma subtype. From these findings, Treg cells could be considered as one of the evasion mechanisms of myeloma cells from host immune responses.

The global spread of human immuno-deficiency virus, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, has been accompanied by a major increase in the number of new cases of tuberculosis. Those people who have HIV infection as well as TB when they die, that is TB and HIV co-infection, are internationally reported as having died of HIV infection. Effective case detection and treatment of TB should therefore be a priority for HIV programmes, to prevent, diagnose, and treat TB in people living with HIV, their families and the communities. But this has not been well implemented in most developing countries, resulting in increasing trend of new TB infections worldwide. Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world with a surface area of 1,127,127 square kilometres. TB is prevalent in Ethiopia, ranking the country as 7th among the world's 22 worst burdened countries, and one of the top three in Africa. The prevalence of all forms of TB is estimated at 579 per 100,000. In 2007, TB case detection rate for the country was only 34% and the death rate was 92 per 100,000 people.

Within this work electrochemical processes for manufacturing of novel silicon solar cells are investigated. Direct plating of Ni and Al on n- and p- silicon is demonstrated by making use of solar cell characteristics. Homogenous Ni/Cu stacks are realized for bifacial and back contact solar cells, forming an excellent mechanical and electrical contact to silicon. For metallization of HIT solar cells, the plating behavior on ITO layers is studied. Additionally, plating processes on evaporated Al layers are developed and applied to back contact solar cells. By means of process optimization the plated metal stack on Al features sufficient adhesion and increases the lateral conductivity of the metal grid resulting in increased solar cell efficiency. An advanced metallization route for back contact solar cells which purposefully utilizes the different characteristics of the deposited metals (Al, Ni, Cu) is developed. The resulting metal stacks are characterized in detail using SEM, EDX and AES methods. Besides plating processes, local oxidizing processes for Al are established and combined with printing technologies to realize the metal contact separation for back contact solar cells.

Shorttitle: HIV/AIDS/TB in Kenya Mario J. Azevedo, Gwendolyn S. Prater, and Sandra Hayes argue that, without a deeper understanding of Kenya's cultural norms and practices on HIV/TB, which are spreading alarmangly in Kenya, scholars and health professionals will not be able to eradicate or meaningfully contain the devastating impact of the twin epidemics. A focus on factors such as the environment and the distribution and management of scarce resources alone represent only a fraction of what is needed to restore the health of the people and have them respond positively to the efforts made by the government authorities, health care providers, and humanitarians of international organizations. The three authors acknowledge the small victories Kenya has achieved against the burden of disease. However, without an integrated approach to the reduction and eradication of the many man-made and environmental factors responsible for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and other ailments, which together weaken and inhibit people's immune system, Kenya's health future will remain bleak for many years to come.

In FSO communications the influence of atmospheric effects can be specified by the attenuation and fluctuations of the transmitted optical power, caused by the atmospheric turbulence. This paper investigate the performance of FSO communication systems employing on-off keying (OOK) , subcarrier binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation and Q-ary pulse position modulation (QPPM) in turbulence regime. The performance results are evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER) employing subcarrier OOK, BPSK, and QPPM as modulation technique. It is found that the BER performance under BPSK modulation is better compared to other modulation techniques but in Q-ary PPM if we increase the order of Q then the performance will improve and it provide maximum 4dB improvement

Of the handful of neurotransmitters modulating taste response, norepinephrine (NE) may be the least understood. Although the physiological role of NE has been tested, it is still unclear whether the rat taste bud may serve as an endogenous source of neurotransmitter or if it must be taken up from outside the taste bud. Immunocytochemical analysis of DBH has shown that DBH-LIR is present in taste cells of the rat circumvallate papillae. Specifically, DBH-LIR is present in a subset of Type II taste cells. Nearly all (98%) DBH-LIR cells express PLCβ2-LIR, and about half (41%) of PLCβ2-LIR cells express DBH-LIR. DBH-LIR does not co-localize with NCAM, and thus, is not present in Type III cells. NET-LIR is present in the taste cells of the rat circumvallate papillae. Double labeling of NET-LIR and IP3R3-LIR indicates that NET is present in Type II taste cells. A large proportion (77%) of NET-LIR cells express IP3R3-LIR and all (100%) IP3R3-LIR cells express NET-LIR. A small proportion (7.8%) of NET-LIR cells also express syntaxin-1-LIR in Type III cells. About a third (32.8%) of syntaxin-1-LIR cells express NET-LIR.

This study is about how donor policy, NGO policy and public policy work together in Ghana’s national strategic response to HIV and AIDS. It touches on two areas of public policy - development policy and health policy specifically relating to HIV/AIDS to determine congruity of public, donor and NGO policies. Based on a survey done in Accra, Ghana in summer 2010 and on documentary sources of data collection, the study captures areas of agreement and disagreement in the three policy streams and discusses their effects on policy implementation. In broader terms, it analyzes assistance for HIV/AIDS in the context of international development aid and how current economic realities make such assistance unsustainable in the long term. It concludes by elaborating a prescriptive model of HIV policy intervention in Ghana with proposed modifications of the current model. This book illuminates the field of HID/AIDS policy making in Ghana in a manner that students of public health and public policy as well as officials from public, private and donor agencies working in the area of public health will find insightful.

Provider referral is the most effective method in HIV partner notification therefore should be among the options offered to HIV clients during counseling to increase partner disclosure as part of a solution to limit HIV transmission. There is however need for more training and funding in order for such a program to be successfully implemented in limited resource settings.

HIV infected people suffered not only medical consequences but they were stigmatized, isolated and excluded intentionally by the rest of the society by being labeled as immoral and dangerous. This was caused by the lack of adequate information. In this regard, the aim of the book is to examine students’ attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS in Kosovo. The publication of this book is important for academic community and policy makers for two reasons. First, there is no similar book which treats in detail the issue of stigmatization, discrimination and attitudes of young people toward people living with HIV/AIDS in Kosova. Secondly, findings derived from the research will serve to the policymakers around the world to design better policies as regard to care and support people living with HIV/AIDS. The book will be of interest to the general reader, those involved in education and social research, and scientific researchers who want to examine the social and psychological aspects of HIV/AIDS.
