Online and blended learning requires the reconstruction of instructor and learner roles, relations, and practices in many aspects. Assessment becomes an important issue in non-traditional learning environments. Assessment literacy, i.e., understanding assessment and assessment strategies, is critical for both instructors and students in creating online and blended environments that are effective for teaching and learning. Instructors need to identify and implement assessment strategies and methods appropriate to online or blended learning. This includes an understanding of the potential of a variety of technology tools for monitoring student learning and improving their teaching effectiveness. From the students’ perspective, good assessment practices can show them what is important to learn and how they should approach learning; hence, engaging them in goal-oriented and self-regulatory cognitions and behaviors. The book targets instructors, instructional designers, and educational leaders who are interested in understanding and implementing either summative or formative assessment in online and blended learning environments. This book will assist the relevant audience in the theory and practice of assessment in online and blended learning environments. Providing both a research and practice perspective, this book can help instructors make the connection between pedagogy and technology tools to maximize their teaching and student learning. Among the questions addressed in this ...

With the emergence of information technology tools, organizational teams often work virtually, relying on IT tools to successfully collaborate. Early reports indicated that many of these partially distributed teams (PDTs) experience difficulty, particularly in the areas of geographic distance, temporal distance and cultural distance. To date, the common tools used to facilitate PDT communication and coordination are email, instant messenger, conference calls, and collaborative Internet environments such as Basecamp, Drupal, and others that have features such as wikis, message boards and shared file space. With the emergence of 3D virtual worlds, the technology is present to begin a new era of experiments in PDT collaboration. This research study examined PDTs collaborating in primarily 2D, text-based environments to PDTs collaborating in both 2D environments and a 3D virtual world, ProtoSphere. Data were collected around nine different dependent variables pulled from virtual teaming literature, as well as usage data on various types of media employed to collaborate. Significant findings were found relating to several variables, particularly team conflict.

Abstract. Understanding and analyzing collaborative learning processes requires a fine-grained sequential analysis of the group interaction in the context of learning goals. Several researchers in the area of collaborative work take the quality of the group outcome as a success criterion. Nevertheless, recent findings are giving more importance to the quality of the collaboration process itself. This paper presents a set of patterns the main objective of which is to evaluate and monitor the collaborative learning process. Also we describe some software tools we have implemented based on these set of patterns and how the patterns proposed have helped us to evaluate and monitor the collaborative learning processes. In this paper our aim is to present a method, which can be used in analyzing the interaction processes in a CSCL environment.

Today we live in the world which is very much a man-made or artificial. In such a world there are many systems and environments, both real and virtual, which can be very well described by formal models. This creates an opportunity for developing a "synthetic intelligence" - artificial systems which cohabit these environments with human beings and carry out some useful function. In this book we address some aspects of this development in the framework of reinforcement learning, learning how to map sensations to actions, by trial and error from feedback. In some challenging cases, actions may affect not only the immediate reward, but also the next sensation and all subsequent rewards. The general task of reinforcement learning stated in a traditional way is unreasonably ambitious for these two characteristics: search by trial-and-error and delayed reward. We investigate general ways of breaking the task of designing a controller down to more feasible sub-tasks which are solved independently. We propose to consider both taking advantage of past experience by reusing parts of other systems, and facilitating the learning phase by employing a bias in initial configuration.

Digital humans have recently had a great impact on the field of ergonomics. An increasing number of organizations are now using digital humans in the design and testing of complex systems. Instead of classical prototyping approaches used for testing and evaluation of new designs, these organizations are relying on simulations in virtual environments to get feedback about their designs. Since a primary goal of using digital humans is to study the interaction between the human and a product in a virtual world, digital humans must have sufficient capabilities to manipulate and grasp virtual objects. We apply several ideas from the fields of robotics, pattern recognition and computer graphics to create a new interactive grasping system for a digital human called SantosTM that is being developed at the Virtual Soldier Research Laboratory at The University of Iowa

The emergence of social networks, OpenCourseWare, Massive Open Online Courses, informal remote learning and connectivist approaches to learning has made the analysis and evaluation of Digital Learning Environments more complex. Modeling these complex systems makes it possible to transcribe the phenomena observed and facilitates the study of these processes with the aid of specific tools. Once this essential step is taken, it then becomes possible to develop plausible scenarios from the observation of emerging phenomena and dominant trends. This book highlights the contribution of complex systems theory in the study of next generation Digital Learning Environments. It describes a realistic approach and proposes a range of effective management tools to achieve it.

With the rise of online multiplayer games and worlds, collecting virtual goods has become an increasing social activity and therefore established the virtual good's subset of virtual collectibles as a relevant category. The corresponding emergence of virtual markets leads to increasing economic and social relevance for virtual collectibles. This is not only true for the obvious markets in virtual worlds where operators try to maximize the economic impact for them and develop sustainable business models. It is also true for many activities in real and virtual worlds where virtual collectibles provide value to people and enhance their overall experience with and within the worlds. Understanding the specifics of virtual collectibles when it comes to marketing them, their value creation chain and the interaction with real and virtual worlds is a major challenge in a vastly unresearched business environment. A major aspect in identifying this is to understand the drivers behind collecting behavior, how they translate to the non-materiality of virtual goods, what can be done to overcome corresponding obstacles and use opportunities and what are the prerequisites and frameworks so that it is accomplished successfully. All this will lead to a dualism in attributes for virtual and real in many goods which increases the potential for virtual or partly virtual collectibles in many ways.

Due to the impact of globalization and technological innovations faculty members’ professional development has gained a vital role in higher education institutions. Faculty members are the ones who prepare suitable teaching and learning environments starting from curriculum work and extending to student support and guidance. Faculty members have to develop themselves in these areas by improving their professional skills in teaching and learning. Adult learning theories suggest that faculty members’ needs should be considered for efficient faculty development. Furthermore, learning may not be achieved if faculty members don’t believe in professional development in general and ICT-based professional development in particular. Therefore, for technology enhanced professional development, identifying faculty beliefs and needs is essential. For this purpose, three instruments were designed and implemented for exploring beliefs and needs of faculty members in an international university.

Information retrieval is a central and essential activity. It is indeed difficult to find a human activity that does not need to retrieve information in an environment which is often increasingly digital: moving and navigating, learning, having fun, communicating, informing, making a decision, etc. Most human activities are intimately linked to our ability to search quickly and effectively for relevant information, the stakes are sometimes extremely important: passing an exam, voting, finding a job, remaining autonomous, being socially connected, developing a critical spirit, or simply surviving. The author of this book presents a summary of work undertaken over several years relative to the behaviors and cognitive processes involved in information retrieval in digital environments. He presents several examples of theoretical models and studies to better understand the difficulties, behaviors and strategies of individuals searching for information in digital environments.
