Bachelor Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject Sociology - Political Sociology, Majorities, Minorities, grade: Bachelor Thesis, , course: American History - Ethnic minorities, language: English, abstract: AbstractThis paper examines the different approaches taken by the governments of Slovakia(former Czechoslovakia), and the United States of America in addressing the issues of minority rights of Afro-Americans in the USA compared to the Romanies in Slovakia. It explains and compares the historical events and political measures implemented by the governments in both countries that helped to form the attitudes of the majority citizens towards the integration of an ethnic minority group. The paper shows that although, both discriminatory in their efforts to tackle the minority rights, Slovakia and the USA applied much varying discriminatory measures which, as a consequence, led to contrary outcomes in terms of the economic and social statuses of both ethnic minorities.

Maji Hailemariam Debena SOCIAL NETWORKS AS MEANS OF COPING IN ENVIRONMENT OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION

This book is the first attempt in Ethiopia to perceive issues of minorities from strengths perspective. Prior research in the area mainly focuses on facts like exclusion, poverty, rights violation and the like that are resulted from social exclusion. Nevertheless, the strengths embedded in minority communities that enabled them to cope with the inhospitable living condition are neglected. This innovative manuscript vividly presents how social minorities are making use of their social networks for their economic and social wellbeing. Minorities, in the absence of formal and institutionalized social support mechanism tend to use their social networks as a form of insurance. Beyond this, the book also describes how minorities are using their social networks as the way out from social exclusion. The book argues that interventions targeting minorities should approach from the strengths existing in minority community.

Jeton Mehmeti Tensions between freedom of expression and religious sensitivity

Freedom of expression is not only one of the basic elements of democracy but a precondition to the process itself. Under the name of freedom of expression, a Danish newspaper in 2005 publishes 12 caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad. These cartoons enrage the Muslim World, who considers cartoons as offending and racist. Denmark and some other European countries stand up to protect their freedom of expression, while Muslims raise up to defend themselves against the new wave of prejudice and xenophobia. European politicians find themselves divided into two; the left wing sees the publication as outrageous, endangering the marginalized minorities, while the right wing sees minorities as threatening to the liberal democracy. This book attempts to look at the political, social and economic consequences of Danish cartoons. Was the cartoon publication a mistake? Should freedom of expression be absolute or it should be used responsibly, especially when it targets vulnerable minorities? To Muslims drawing the Prophet is considered a sin and a forbidden act. To the West anybody can be a target of criticism and even mockery. The debate is ongoing.

It is hygiene, for it enforces cleanliness; it is economics, for it shows comfort in simplicity rather than in the complex and costly; it is moral geometry, inasmuch as it defines our sense of proportion to the universe. It represents the true spirit of Eastern democracy by making all its votaries aristocrats in taste.(from "The Book of Tea")

Unequal Democracy: The Political Economy of the New Gilded Age

The first edition of Unequal Democracy was an instant classic, shattering illusions about American democracy and spurring scholarly and popular interest in the political causes and consequences of escalating economic inequality. This revised and expanded edition includes two new chapters on the political economy of the Obama era. One presents the Great Recession as a "stress test" of the American political system by analyzing the 2008 election and the impact of Barack Obama's "New New Deal" on the economic fortunes of the rich, middle class, and poor. The other assesses the politics of inequality in the wake of the Occupy Wall Street movement, the 2012 election, and the partisan gridlock of Obama's second term. Larry Bartels offers a sobering account of the barriers to change posed by partisan ideologies and the political power of the wealthy. He also provides new analyses of tax policy, partisan differences in economic performance, the struggle to raise the minimum wage, and inequalities in congressional representation. President Obama identified inequality as "the defining challenge of our time." Unequal Democracy is the definitive account of how and why our political system has failed to rise to that challenge. Now more than ever, this is a book every American needs to read.

Nicholas Noloboff The Democratic Family in Tocqueville.s America On Difference in the Age of Equality

Alexis de Tocqueville's political masterpiece, Democracy in America, remains the most important contribution to the study of modern democracy to date. Though Tocqueville scholars have exhausted the work's most popular themes like 'the tyranny of the majority' and 'democratic despotism' they have overlooked a feature of American life central to the survival of the nation: the democratic family. The Democratic Family in Tocqueville's America examines the greatest dangers of democratic life and shows how the family remediates these through the new roles of American women;as domestic 'keepers of morals' women take on an instructive role held by men in ages past, and in doing so, exemplify a novel recognition of difference in the age of equality. The book argues for stronger attention to women and family as features key to understanding how American democracy thrived in Tocqueville's day, and gives us reason to hope that it can survive today. The Democratic Family sheds considerable light on an understudied aspect of Tocqueville's work and can be enjoyed by both academic audiences as well as readers with general interest in American democracy.

Haidt argues that morality is based on both intuition and reasoning, and that liberals and conservatives base their beliefs on different and often competing moral constructs. He suggests that conservatism in the United States relies more on appeal to moral intuitions than liberalism does, and that liberals should take conservative morality seriously by acknowledging the validity of the moral institutions that appeal to conservatives. There are three principles of moral psychology. The first is that moral intuitions precede moral reasoning. The second is that morality not only describes opinions about harm and fairness, but also includes communal and group taboos and commitments. Brigitte Reck Between Democracy and Technocracy. The Role of Expertise for the European Parliament

The European Union is increasingly facing a dilemma between democracy and technocracy. On the one hand, the EU is today accused for lacking sufficient democratic legitimacy, and on the other, public policy-making is getting more and more complex and technical, making politicians reliant to a certain extent on the technical knowledge of specialised experts. The European Parliament, being the only directly legitimated body within the institutional set-up of the EU and thus the symbol of democracy, plays a key role in this respect. In this book Brigitte Reck analyses the role of expertise for the European Parliament. It is assumed that, in order to fulfil the new challenges posed by its enhanced role in EU decision-making, the European Parliament depends to a high degree on internal and external help in the form of expert knowledge, policy advice and parliamentary assistance. It discovers, mainly on the basis of interviews with politicians and officials in Brussels, which sources of expertise the European Parliament can rely on and to what extent Parliament has adapted its internal capacities to the new challenges arising mainly from co-decision, but also from enhanced complexity. Finally it suggests how to improve the internal expertise capacities of the European Parliament which are necessary if the institution is to bridge the gap between democratic control and good quality outcomes.

Joseph Chavez Morality and Moral Reasoning in the Banking Industry

This work examined certain key characteristics of the banking employee that may make him/her a more ethical and moral decision-maker based on Kohlberg's Cognitive Moral Development theory. This study attempted to answer the salient question: Can ethics courses and/or training help develop a more moral employee in the banking industry? The answer to this key question led to answers to other related ethical issues in the banking industry. To facilitate this examination, the Defining Issues Test (DIT) was used. James R. Rest was the developer of this testing format, which ascertains the level of moral maturity on the Kohlbergian scale. The study thus focused on determining whether or not banking employees who had taken ethics courses and/or training possess higher moral maturity and thus may make for more moral decision-makers, or whether ethics courses and/or training make no difference to the banking employees' moral maturity levels, and consequently have no influence in their moral decision-making. The study, also, explored any relationships among moral maturity and age, gender, and the educational level of the banking employees.

Can Educators Make a Difference. Experimenting with and Experiencing, Democracy in Education

As the title of this book suggests, how we understand, perceive and experience democracy mayhave a significant effect on how we actually engage in, and with, democracy. Within theeducational context, this is a key concern, and forms the basis of the research presented in thisvolume within a critical, comparative analysis. The Global Doing Democracy Research Project(GDDRP), which currently has some 70 scholars in over 20 countries examining how educatorsdo democracy, provides the framework in which diverse scholars explore a host of concerns related to democracy and democraticeducation, including the impact of neoliberalism, political literacy, critical engagement, teaching and learning for and about democracy, social justice, and the meaning of power/power relations within the educational context.Ultimately, the contributors of this book collectively ask: can there be democracy without a critically engaged education, and, importantly, what role do educators play in this context and process? Why many educators in diverse contexts believe that they areunable, dissuaded and/or prevented from doing thick democratic education is problematized in this book but the authors also seek toillustrate that, despite the challenges, barriers and concerns about doing democracy in education, something can, and should, be done todevelop, cultivate and ingratiate schools and society with more meaningful democratic practices and processes. This book breaks new ground by using a similar empirical me...

David Cook Moral Maze, the - A Way of Exploring Christian Ethics

Moral decisions present the individual with a maze of possibilities which can be overwhelming. The increasing complexity of modern life makes it difficult for Christians to know what is ethically right and how to make the right choices. David Cook, in this straightforward and very readable book, examines the main causes of the moral dilemmas in which we so often find ourselves. Not only does he provide an excellent introduction to moral philosophy and its leading schools of thought, but he also examines the sources of Christian principles. How can this Christian use the Bible as a guide to ethical problems? What role should the Church and tradition play? Dr Cook concludes that despite the numerous choices surrounding us, Christian values still offer an authoritative alternative. In the final section, a method is suggested for moral decision making at a practical level, drawing on Edward de Bono's innovative thinking techniques, and this is applied to the questions of abortion and euthanasis. The Moral Maze is a first-class textbook for students of ethics in universities and theological colleges, and the ideal introduction to how to make moral decisions for the general reader.

And perhaps the most important question: what can we do to preserve and strengthen democracy among the forces that oppose it?In this book we explore trends throughout history that have brought democratic – and undemocratic – government to people wherever civilization exists. We discuss where democracy has been most, and least, successful and why. But our most important task is to clarify what each of us can do, as politicians or ordinary citizens, to bring the benefits of democracy more fully into the personal and political lives of those who cherish it. Includes the section: Guide to Voting in a Democracy–

Clive Barnett engages with key thinkers in various traditions of democratic theory and demonstrates the importance of a geographical imagination in interpreting contemporary political change.Debates about radical democracy, Barnett argues, have become trapped around a set of oppositions between deliberative and agonistic theories--contrasting thinkers who promote the possibility of rational agreement and those who seek to unmask the role of power or violence or difference in shaping human affairs. While these debates are often framed in terms of consensus versus contestation, Barnett unpacks the assumptions about space and time that underlie different understandings of the sources of political conflict and shows how these differences reflect deeper philosophical commitments to theories of creative action or revived ontologies of "the political." Rather than developing ideal theories of democracy or models of proper politics, he argues that attention should turn toward the practices of claims-making through which political movements express experiences of injustice and make demands for recognition, redress, and re pair. By rethinking the spatial grammar of discussions of public space, democratic inclusion, and globalization, Barnett develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the crucial roles played by geographical processes in generating and processing co...

Federico Ferrara Thailand Unhinged. The Death of Thai-Style Democracy

Thailand Unhinged: The Death of Thai-Style Democracy delivers an excoriating critique of Thai politics and society over the tumultuous years that followed the ouster of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thailand's ongoing political crisis is explained through the prism of the country's painful post-absolutist history - a history marred by the systematic sabotage of any meaningful democratic development, the routine hijacking of democratic institutions, and the continued suffocation of the Thai people's democratic aspirations orchestrated by an unelected ruling class in an increasingly desperate attempt to hold on to its power. This new edition, uncensored, expanded, and revised, argues that the tragic events of 2010 mark the end of "Thai-Style Democracy" - a five-decades-old system of government that, notwithstanding the appropriation of some of the trappings of democracy, has largely preserved the right of "good" men of high birth, status, and wealth to run the country. The essays are written in a pointed, combative style, making Thailand Unhinged a highly unconventional mix of academic scholarship, literary journalism, and radical pamphleteering.IN PRAISE OF THE FIRST EDITIONWritten by an extremely talented Harvard PhD journalist/professor, this well-crafted collection of essays illuminate[s] magnificently the tragedy of Thailand today. Before proceeding to this extensive and difficult subject, I shall quote a passage from Dr. Butler, in which he has combined together, and compressed into the compass of a few paragraphs, all the most important arguments in proof of the existence of the moral faculty which have been hitherto under our review. While this quotation serves as a summary of what has already been stated, it will, I hope, prepare us for entering on the following discussions with greater interest and a more enlightened curiosity. " That which renders beings capable of moral government is their having a moral nature, and moral faculties of perception and of action. Brute creatures are impressed and actuated by various instincts and propensities: so also are we. But, additional to this, we have a capacity for reflecting upon actions and characters, and making them an object to our thought; and on doing this we naturally and unavoidably approve some actions, under the peculiar view of their being virtuous and of good desert, and disapprove others as vicious and of ill desert. That we have this moral approving and disapproving faculty is certain from our experiencing...

Mick Hume Revolting!: How the Establishment are Undermining Democracy and What They’re Afraid Of

A short, sharp intervention in the crucial debate about the future of democracy, which has been brought to a head by events from Brexit to the Trump phenomenon. We live in strange days in the history of democracy.Every serious politician in the Western world supports democracy. Yet when the EU Referendum and American Elections both delivered the ‘wrong’ result, elites challenged the merit of the people’s will, and some even tried to block it. Preferring unelected institutions, from technocrats to the courts, self-appointed higher minds questioned whether voters are fit to be trusted with their own futures. Ours is the age of “I support democracy, but…”And yet the answer will never be to impose limitations. Popular democracy must offer better choices, rather than removing choice altogether. It’s time to defend democracy and fight for more it, with no ifs, buts or backtracks.

Hope for American democracy in an era of deep divisions In Healing the Heart of Democracy, Parker J. Palmer quickens our instinct to seek the common good and gives us the tools to do it. This timely, courageous and practical work—intensely personal as well as political—is not about them, «those people» in Washington D.C., or in our state capitals, on whom we blame our political problems. It's about us, «We the People,» and what we can do in everyday settings like families, neighborhoods, classrooms, congregations and workplaces to resist divide-and-conquer politics and restore a government «of the people, by the people, for the people.» In the same compelling, inspiring prose that has made him a bestselling author, Palmer explores five «habits of the heart» that can help us restore democracy's foundations as we nurture them in ourselves and each other: An understanding that we are all in this together An appreciation of the value of «otherness» An ability to hold tension in life-giving ways A sense of personal voice and agency A capacity to create community Healing the Heart of Democracy is an eloquent and empowering call for «We the People» to reclaim our democracy. The online journal Democracy & Education called it «one of the most important books of the early 21st Century.» And Publishers Weekly, in a Starred Review, said «This beautifully written book deserves a wide audience that will benefit from discussing it.»

Scott R. Stroud John Dewey and the Artful Life. Pragmatism, Aesthetics, and Morality

Aesthetic experience has had a long and contentious history in the Western intellectual tradition. Following Kant and Hegel, a human's interaction with nature or art frequently has been conceptualized as separate from issues of practical activity or moral value. This book examines how art can be seen as a way of moral cultivation. Scott Stroud uses the thought of the American pragmatist John Dewey to argue that art and the aesthetic have a close connection to morality. Dewey gives us a way to reconceptualize our ideas of ends, means, and experience so as to locate the moral value of aesthetic experience in the experience of absorption itself, as well as in the experience of reflective attention evoked by an art object.

Malko Victoria A. The Chechen Wars. Responses in Russia and the United States

Within five years of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, ethnic conflicts spilled throughout its territory, most of them in the Russian Federation. An analysis of scope and intensity of a conflict with one of Russia's two hundred ethnic minorities is the focus of this book. The conflict in Chechnya erupted into two full-scale wars, fought during the decade of Russia's turbulent transition from communism toward democracy. Using a variety of sources-governmental documents, monographs, diaries of military and political leaders, reports, and contemporary periodicals-the author examines the roots of the conflict and responses to the wars from the media, political parties, and diplomatic circles in Russia and the United States. The Chechen wars have demonstrated the limits of the concept of self-determination for an abused minority population. The military operation in Chechnya has eroded Russian democracy and strengthened those within the military and security forces who call for a return to the old ways. For many in today's Russian elite, the restoration of the lost Soviet empire might be the ultimate objective. The developments in the future deserve the world's attention.

Abdelkrim Dekhakhena The New Project for the Middle East. From US Democracy Promotion to ISIL Destruction

Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, , course: American Studies, language: English, abstract: The supercilious idea of the United States that, by toppling Saddam Hussein, can rapidly democratize Iraq and unleash a democratic tsunami in the Middle East, has metamorphosed into an apocalypse that swept the core nations of the region. Chaos and destruction became the "manifest destiny" of these peoples and democracy became a dangerous fantasy. The United States' record of building democracy after invading other countries is mixed at best and the Bush administration's commitment to state-building efforts in Iraq is doubtful. The United States have failed at developing democracy in the Middle East - which has led to increased instability and anarchy - because U.S. foreign policy has misunderstood the formula for building democracy in the region. The United States is just the latest Western nation to fail in the Middle East. The repercussions of a miscalculated intervention in Iraq were likely to complicate the spread of democracy in the Middle East rather than to promote it. Instead of developing democratic governments in the region the US intervention paved the way for the emergence of more oppressive radical groups that hijacked the reins of power from the legitimate governments and anguished peoples' lives through acts of terror and bullying. The new paradox that Bush's neoc...

Bartels’s Democracy for Realists by Instaread Preview: Democracy for Realists: Why Elections Do Not Produce Responsive Government offers a critique of conventional wisdom surrounding popular theories of democracy. Authors Christopher Achen and Larry Bartels argue that the public, journalists, and political scientists rely on a group of common-sense understandings of democracy. The authors collectively refer to these beliefs as the “folk theory” of democracy. The folk theory presumes that people behave as engaged citizens and that election outcomes reflect public policy preferences. This assumption is inaccurate and misleading, and therefore presents a danger to democracy.Political scientists have tried in various ways to validate or systematize the intuitions on which the folk theory in based. Anthony Downs put forward a spatial model of voting, which supposes that individuals vote for the politicians who are closest to their own policy preferences. Adam Smith The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Written in 1759 by Scottish philosopher and political economist Adam Smith, "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" provides much of the foundation for the ideas in his later works, most notably in "The Wealth of Nations." Through this initial text, Smith expresses his general system of morals, exploring the propriety of action, reward and punishment, sense of duty, and the effect of numerous factors on moral sentiment. In so doing, Smith devised innovative theories on virtues, conscience, and moral judgment that are still relevant and accessible today. Though somewhat surprising to find a philosopher of Smith's abilities discussing aspects such as luck and sympathy and how they affect self-image or relationships, "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" never loses its critical excellence in its good-natured understanding of the human exploration for the meaning of being good.

John McGowan American Liberalism. An Interpretation for Our Time

Americans live in a liberal democracy. Yet, although democracy is widely touted today, liberalism is scorned by both the right and the left. The United States stands poised between its liberal democratic tradition and the illiberal alternatives of liberalism's critics. John McGowan argues that Americans should think twice before jettisoning the liberalism that guided American politics from James Madison to the New Deal and the Great Society. In an engaging and informative discussion, McGowan offers a ringing endorsement of American liberalism's basic principles, values, and commitments. He identifies five tenets of liberalism: a commitment to liberty and equality, trust in a constitutionally established rule of law, a conviction that modern societies are irreducibly plural, the promotion of a diverse civil society, and a reliance on public debate and deliberation to influence others' opinions and actions.McGowan explains how America's founders rejected the simplistic notion that government or society is necessarily oppressive. They were, however, acutely aware of the danger of tyranny. The liberalism of the founders distributed power widely in order to limit the power any one entity could exercise over others. Their aim was to provide for all an effective freedom that combined the right to self-determination with the ability to achieve one's self-chosen goals. In tracing this history, McGowan offers a clear vision of liberalism's foundational values as...

The traditional pillars of American middle-class democracy—government, schools, churches, and the media—have eroded. The American Dream has persisted, but it is no longer attainable through adherence to traditional values like hard work, education, and determination. As the old norms and structures collapsed, organized money filled the vacancy. Big American corporations and banks, bolstered by deregulation at home and a new global capitalist economy abroad, began to wield unprecedented influence over government and the economy. This period of American history can be considered “the unwinding.”With the unwinding came new freedoms and opportunities for people working in the financial and lobbying industries, and for some entrepreneurs.
