Growth, development and yield of soybean are a result of a variety's genetic potential interacting with environment and farming practices. Experiments were carried out in two locations for determining the resistance of some soybean genotypes to the cotton leaf worm. Beside that, identification of molecular genetic markers linked to insect resistance was also done. An attempt was done to get some new resistant hybrids through execution hybridization between these cultivars. Plant height, numbers of branches and pods per plant and seed yield per plant were decreased significantly by the infestation of cotton leaf worm (Spodoptera littoralis) as compared with soybean plants grown in Giza region (non - stressed treatment). The results of SDS-PAGE revealed a total number of 21 bands with molecular weight (MW) ranging form about 319.63 to 15.568 KDa. 5 primers showed specific ISSR markers for cotton leaf worm with 6 positive markers for cotton leaf worm resistance appeared in the resistant genotypes, while 2 negative markers for susceptibility for cotton leaf worm were present in the susceptible genotypes.

Maize kernel infection by Aspergillus flavus and later aflatoxin contaminatuion are worldwide problems in production and storage. Genetic resistance to A. flavus is most cost-effective to minimize the loss to kernels. To study the inheritance of A. flavus resistance, maize diallel and half-sib family crosses were made and genetic effects analyzed for percent kernel infection (PKI) rates using MIKI. Highly significant GCA, SCA and reciprocal effects were found. Two parents had desirable GCA effects on enhancing the average resistance performance in hybrid progeny. Three crosses had consistently negative SCA effects over year. They revealed that genetic resistance to kernel infection by A. flavus existed in maize and was identifiable and exploitable. Both diallel and half-sib analyses agreed and confirmed genotypic, additive and dominance effects. Lab-based PKI compared with the field-based demonstrated that it was more effective in screening for resistant maize germplasm. This study is instructive to breeders, geneticists, and pathologists in that these methods can be realistic solutions to identifying desired genes and breeding for genetic resistance.

Antibiotic resistance patterns of bacterial microbiomes isolated from the New Calabar River were used to build up models on the possible effects of environmental pollutants on antibiotic resistance. The microbiomes were obtained from water and sediment samples collected at georeferenced sites on the river. This is the basis of the microbiome biogeochemico-graphic information system (MBCGIS). A combination of nutritional and physicochemical factors is presented as support for the existence of microbiome antibiograms in ecosystems challenged with environmental pollutants.High incidence of antibiotic resistance in environments with pronounced industrial and human activities, suggest possible effects of pollutants on the ecosystem. A weak correlation (r = 0.28) between incidence of antibiotic resistance and faecal coliforms implies that the antibiotic resistance patterns of microbiomes may be due to factors that are not linked to faecal pollution. The presence of chemical pollutants may contribute to the risk of increased antibiotic resistance in the environment. Sustainable development demands rigorous legislation for the protection of natural water resources.

Engineered composite lumber is one of sawn wood alternative. The product described herein utilizes a modified form of sawn lumber as the raw material. The objective of this research was to manufacture, and evaluate a novel type of engineered lumber by non destructive evaluation and mechanical testing and compare the design values to those published by the U.S. (NDS) for wood construction. Pine logs were into matched symmetrical trapezoids. Symmetrical trapezoids were evaluated non-destructively and sorted by results to be matched into pairs and assembled into Bowtie Beams. Manufactured beams were nondestructively evaluated too. Then the beams were mechanically tested. The design strength and stiffness was compared to the values of sections of equivalent depth and maximum width as shown in the NDS. The present investigation was carried out in Randomized Block Design during rabi season of 2005-06 with 25 genotypes derived from wide and intervarietal crosses and 5 checks of chickpea at Crop Research Center of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. The observations were recorded on days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, primary branches/, plant width, pods/ plant, seeds/pod, 100 seed weight and grain yield/plant to study genotypic, phenotypic variability, genetic advance, character association, genetic divergence and genetic relationship using SDS -PAGE. The ANOVA revealed highly significant genetic differences among genotypes for all the characters studied. High values of C.V. were observed for grain yield/plant, 100 seed weight, primary braches/plant and seeds/ pod. Amongst 25 genotypes only PG055 and PG053 were significantly superior for plant width and grain yield/ plant, respectively. Analysis of genotypic character association study revealed highly significant and positive association of days to maturity with plant height (0.496), seeds/ pod and days to 50% flowering (0.491), primary branches/plant and pods/ plant
