Postcolonial Sociologies. A Reader

Postcolonial theory has mostly been confined to literary studies and the humanities, but it has been slowly making its way into social science. This is a welcome development but poses new challenges. How can postcolonial thought be most fruitfully translated and incorporated into sociology? This special volume brings together leading sociologists to offer some answers and examples. The chapters offer new postcolonial readings of canonical thinkers like Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim and Robert Park; consider whether or not postcolonial theory is compatible with sociology; explore the relationship between knowledge and colonial power; offer critical perspectives on the sociology of race; ponder the implications of postcolonial theory for global sociology; creatively employ postcolonial concepts such as hybridity; and excavate the social theories of occluded thinkers in India. This volume will be an important guide for scholars and students in the social sciences who are interested in what postcolonial thought has to offer.

Kristine Suna-Koro In Counterpoint

What does postcoloniality have to do with sacramentality? How do diasporic lives and imaginaries shape the course of postcolonial sacramental theology? Neither postcolonial theorists nor sacramental theologians have hitherto sought to engage in a sustained dialogue with one another. In this trailblazing volume, Kristine Suna-Koro brings postcolonialism, diaspora discourse, and Christian sacramental theology into a mutually critical and constructive transdisciplinary conversation. Dialoguing with thinkers as diverse as Edward Said and Gayatri Spivak as well as Francis D'Sa, S.J., Martin Luther, Mayra Rivera, and John Chryssavgis, the author offers a postcolonial retrieval of sacramentality through a robust theological engagement with the postcolonial notions of hybridity, contrapuntality, planetarity, and Third Space. While exploring the methodological potential of diasporic imaginary in theology, this innovative book advances the notion of sacramental pluriverse and of Christ as its paradigmatic crescendo within the sacramental economy of creation and redemptive transformation. In the context of ecological degradation, In Counterpoint argues that it is vital for the postcolonial sacramental renewal to be rooted in ethics as a uniquely postcolonial fundamental theology."Kristine Suna-Koro does phenomenal work reading the sacraments through postcolonial lenses. Keeping a complex language, she gives us one of the best gifts a theologian can offer: the work of the imagina...

Sayaka Funada-Classen The Origins of War in Mozambique. a History of Unity and Division

The independence of Mozambique in 1975 and its decolonisation process attracted worldwide attention as a successful example of "national unity". Yet, the armed conflict that broke out between the government and the guerrilla force in 1977 lasted for sixteen years and resulted in over a million deaths and several million refugees, placing this concept of "national unity" into doubt. For nearly twenty years, Sayaka Funada-Classen interviewed people in rural communities in Mozambique. By examining their testimonies, historical documents, previous studies, international and regional politics, and the changes that various interventions under colonialism brought to the traditional social structure, this book demonstrates that the seeds of "division" had already been planted while the liberation movement was seeking "unity" in the struggle years. Presenting a comprehensive history of contemporary Mozambique, this book is indispensable for Mozambican scholars. It promises to serve as a landmark study not only for historians and the scholars of African studies but also for those who give serious consideration to the problems of conflict and peace in the world.

Social Memory, Silenced Voices, and Political Struggle. Remembering the Revolution in Zanzibar

This volume focuses on the cultural memory and mediation of the 1964 Zanzibar revolution, analyzing it’s continuing reverberations in everyday life. The revolution constructed new conceptions of community and identity, race and cultural belonging, as well as instituting different ideals of nationhood, citizenship, sovereignty. As the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the revolution revealed, the official versions of events have shifted significantly over time and the legacy of the uprising is still deeply contested. In these debates, the question of Zanzibari identity remains very much at stake: Who exactly belongs in the islands and what historical processes brought them there? What are the boundaries of the nation, and who can claim to be an essential part of this imagined and embodied community?Political belonging and power are closely intertwined with these issues of identity and history—raising intense debates and divisions over precisely where Zanzibar should be situated within the national order of things in a postcolonial and interconnected world. Attending to narratives that have been overlooked, ignored, or relegated to the margins, the authors of these essays do not seek to simply define the revolution or to establish its ultimate meaning. Instead, they seek to explore the continuing echoes and traces of the revolution fifty years on, reflected in memories, media, and monuments. Inspired by interdisciplinary perspectives from anthropology, history, cultural ...

In this book Jeffrey C. Alexander develops an original social theory of trauma and uses it to carry out a series of empirical investigations into social suffering around the globe. Alexander argues that traumas are not merely psychological but collective experiences, and that trauma work plays a key role in defining the origins and outcomes of critical social conflicts. He outlines a model of trauma work that relates interests of carrier groups, competing narrative identifications of victim and perpetrator, utopian and dystopian proposals for trauma resolution, the performative power of constructed events, and the distribution of organizational resources. Alexander explores these processes in richly textured case studies of cultural-trauma origins and effects, from the universalism of the Holocaust to the particularism of the Israeli right, from postcolonial battles over the Partition of India and Pakistan to the invisibility of the Rape of Nanjing in Maoist China. In a particularly controversial chapter, Alexander describes the idealizing discourse of globalization as a trauma-response to the Cold War. Contemporary societies have often been described as more concerned with the past than the future, more with tragedy than progress. In Trauma: A Social Theory, Alexander explains why.

Most people think that negotiating is a sequence of rational decision processes whereas, as a matter of fact, negotiating involves a dimension that is most often underestimated or ignored: emotions. These might be positive emotions like happiness or negative emotions like disappointment and guilt, but what they all have in common is that they significantly impact negotiations. This lack of awareness about the influence of emotions on negotiations often leads to negotiation strategies that ignore emotions, even though, recognizing and using emotions can significantly improve the negotiation experience and results. Nelly Richard Eruptions of Memory. The Critique of Memory in Chile, 1990-2015

In this important book, one of Latin America’s foremost critical theorists examines the use and abuse of memory in the wake of the social and political trauma of Pinochet’s Chile. Focusing on the period 1990–2015, Nelly Richard denounces the politics and aesthetics of forgetting that have underpinned both the protracted transition out of dictatorship and the denial of justice to its survivors and victims. What are the perils and social costs of a culture of forgetting? What forms do memories of injustice take in newly formed democracies? How might a history of violence and an ethics of reparation be reconciled in post-autocratic societies? In addressing these and other questions, Richard exposes the abuses of the past and the present while also attending to the residues of memory that are manifested in street protests, literature, and the media, and in artistic practices from architecture and urban design to installation and film. While cultural artifacts can be powerful devices for resistance and critique, Richard argues that they can also be complicit in reproducing and collaborating with forms of institutional and political oblivion. Both within Chile and beyond, Richard offers a trenchant critique of how authoritarian regimes and neoliberal states whittle away at memory’s critical capacity. At a time of seismic political realignments in Latin America and internationally, Eruptions of Memory makes a powerful case for the ethical, political, and aesthetic value of memory.

Khaoula Chakour The Problematic of the Kaleidoscopic Postcolonial Discourse

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, Sultan Moulay Sliman University, language: English, abstract: Postcolonial Literature is generally concerned with the demystification of the repercussions of colonialism with regard to individuals, societies and cultures. Indeed, all of these culminate in the psychological implications colonialism has on colonial subjects. Besides, there has recently been a proliferating trend to evaluate the postcloniality of literary works in terms of their consistency vis-à-vis feminist and ecocritical issues as inextricably integral components of the postcolonial discourse. In this regard, this paper is concerned with assessing the degree of postcoloniality in Margaret Atwood's Surfacing, Anita Desai's Fire on the Mountain, and Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart by perusing their approaches to the colonial psychological traumas, their representation of women within postcolonial systems of patriarchy and their rendering of nature as a "colonial subject". This will be conducted through a meticulous analysis of the main protagonists' thought and behaviour patterns.

Lives in Translation: Sikh Youth as British Citizens

In "Lives in Translation", Kathleen Hall investigates the cultural politics of immigration and citizenship, education and identity-formation among Sikh youth whose parents migrated to England from India and East Africa. Legally British, these young people encounter race as a barrier to becoming truly "English." Hall breaks with conventional ethnographies about immigrant groups by placing this paradox of modern citizenship at the center of her study, considering Sikh immigration within a broader analysis of the making of a multiracial postcolonial British nation. The postwar British public sphere has been a contested terrain on which the politics of cultural pluralism and of social incorporation have configured the possibilities and the limitations of citizenship and national belonging. Hall's rich ethnographic account directs attention to the shifting fields of power and cultural politics in the public sphere, where collective identities, social statuses, and cultural subjectivities are produced in law and policy, education and the media, as well as in families, peer groups, ethnic networks, and religious organizations. Hall uses a blend of interviews, fieldwork, and archival research to challenge the assimilationist narrative of the traditional immigration myth, demonstrating how migrant people come to know themselves and others through contradictory experiences of social conflict and solidarity across different social fields within the public sphere. Introduction: The Impact of the English Colonial Language Policy on the Postcolonial IdentityMy paper aims at exploring the effects of English colonial language policy on the postcolonial identity and their representations in postcolonial literature. Before applying to the main works, on which I will focus, The Enigma of Arrival and Small Island, I would like briefly to introduce the reader to the objectives of English colonial language policy. English colonial language education not only responds to the demands of access to European knowledge, but also it is a way of effective governance over the colonized people. Under the mask of the moral imperial duty to enlighten uncultivated subjects, the established discourses of Anglicism and Orientalism aim at fashioning the tastes, opinions and morals of the natives after the British imperial style, making them deny their origins in an attempt to become more English than the Englishmen. The process of reshaping the colonials' identity is said to be for the sake of their own good, being in need to be cured of their ignorance. The indigenous cultures and languages are regarded as unable either to contain or to convey any sort of valuable information, because of being primitive and rude as the n...

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Psychology - Social Psychology, grade: 2,0, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: Shteynberg's social tuning effect (2010) shows that synchronously experiencing something with relationally close others, leads to better memory for the attended object. With reference to the novel Relevance of a representation framework, the present study now investigated the motivational processes underlying this effect. The memory advantage was expected to appear only for objects that were motivationally relevant for an anticipated group interaction with relationally close others. In an online experiment, based on the original paradigm, participants completed a recognition memory test on words that were experienced in a (fictitious) group. The group condition (more vs. less relationally close) and the interaction condition (anticipated vs. not anticipated) were manipulated. As expected, it was found that those words were remembered better that were anticipated to be regarded in a group interaction, independent from group condition. The present study provides evidence for the key role of motivational relevance in cognitive processes, as postulated by ROAR.

The author, who was born in 1949 on the Caribbean island of Antigua, is one of the representative figures of postcolonial literature, which has been gaining prominence since the 1970s. With the apppearance of the work "The Empire Writes Back: Theory and Practice in Post-Colonial Literatures" written by Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths, and Helen Tiffin in 1989 the popularity of the term "Postcolonialism" grew even more. The definition of the term is still widely discussed but in general postcolonial literature deals with the effects of colonization on the colonized people and society after the end of colonization. The term "post" indicates that Postcolonialism is relating to the time following the establishment of independence in a colony. That means, the time after the colonial powers have left the country and the time of colonization is over. Nevertheless, the issues of Postcolonialism are so many-sided that they often transcend astrict definition of the term, which is therefore used much more loosly in practice. This book is the first attempt in Ethiopia to perceive issues of minorities from strengths perspective. Prior research in the area mainly focuses on facts like exclusion, poverty, rights violation and the like that are resulted from social exclusion. Nevertheless, the strengths embedded in minority communities that enabled them to cope with the inhospitable living condition are neglected. This innovative manuscript vividly presents how social minorities are making use of their social networks for their economic and social wellbeing. Minorities, in the absence of formal and institutionalized social support mechanism tend to use their social networks as a form of insurance. Beyond this, the book also describes how minorities are using their social networks as the way out from social exclusion. The book argues that interventions targeting minorities should approach from the strengths existing in minority community.

Babak Falsafi, Thomas F. Wenisch A Primer on Hardware Prefetching

Since the 1970's, microprocessor-based digital platforms have been riding Moore's law, allowing for doubling of density for the same area roughly every two years. However, whereas microprocessor fabrication has focused on increasing instruction execution rate, memory fabrication technologies have focused primarily on an increase in capacity with negligible increase in speed. This divergent trend in performance between the processors and memory has led to a phenomenon referred to as the "Memory Wall."To overcome the memory wall, designers have resorted to a hierarchy of cache memory levels, which rely on the principal of memory access locality to reduce the observed memory access time and the performance gap between processors and memory. Unfortunately, important workload classes exhibit adverse memory access patterns that baffle the simple policies built into modern cache hierarchies to move instructions and data across cache levels. As such, processors often spend much time idling upon a demand fetch of memory blocks that miss in higher cache levels. Prefetching-predicting future memory accesses and issuing requests for the corresponding memory blocks in advance of explicit accesses-is an effective approach to hide memory access latency. There have been a myriad of proposed prefetching techniques, and nearly every modern processor includes some hardware prefetching mechanisms targeting simple and regular memory access patterns. This primer offers an overview ...

Contemporary Perspectives on Social Learning in Early Childhood Education (PB)

Social epistemology is a broad set of approaches to the study of knowledge and to gain information about the social dimensions. This intellectual movement of wide cross-disciplinary sources reconstructs the problems of epistemology when knowledge is considered to be intrinsically social. In the first chapter, "Social Epistemology and Social Learning," Olivia Saracho and Bernard Spodek discuss the social and historical contexts in which different forms of knowledge are formulated based on the perspective of social epistemology. They also discuss the emergence of social epistemology, which guides researchers to investigate social phenomena in laboratory and field settings. Social factors "external" to the appropriate business of science have a major impact in the social studies researchers'= historical case studies. Thus, social studies researchers may be considered social epistemologists, because (a) they focus on knowledge of social influences and (b) they infer epistemologically significant conclusions from their sociological or anthropological research. In addition, analyses indicate that studies of scientific paradigms are basically a struggle for political power rather than reflecting reliable epistemic merit. Social studies researchers focus on knowledge of social influences on knowledge, which is analogous to the knowledge of the social epistemologists. Anna Rebecca Solevåg Negotiating the Disabled Body. Representations of Disability in Early Christian Texts

Negotiating the Disabled Body explores how nonnormative bodies are presented in early Christian literature through the lens of disability studies. In a number of case studies, Solevåg shows how early Christians struggled to come to terms with issues relating to body, health, and dis/ability. These efforts to interpret unruly and extraordinary bodies appear in the texts in a multitude of ways, from healing in the gospels to inflicting disability in the Acts of Peter and from theologizing in Paul’s letters to using disability as invective in Papias. Solevåg uses the concepts of “narrative prosthesis,” gaze and stare, stigma, monster theory, and crip theory to examine early Christian material to reveal the multiple, polyphonous, contradictory ways in which nonnormative bodies appear.

A tension between the desire to be respected as an equal and the desire to distinguish oneself as a unique person lies at the heart of the modern social order. Everyone cares about recognition: no one wants to be treated with disrespect, insulted, humiliated, or simply ignored. This basic motivation drives the ‘politics of recognition’ which we see in those struggles for inclusion and equality in relation to gender, ethnicity, race and sexuality and which seek to affirm the public value of these particular identities. In this compelling new book Cillian McBride argues that the notion of recognition is not merely confined to these struggles, but has a long history, from ancient ethical ideals centred on the achievement of honour and glory, to Enlightenment ideals of human dignity and equality. He explores the politics of cultural rights and recognition, the conflict between dignity and esteem, the role of shame and stigma in systems of social control and punishment, the prospects for a just society in which everyone receives the recognition they deserve, and the way in which we come to be independent, self-determining persons through negotiating the networks of social recognition we inhabit. Recognition will be essential reading for students in philosophy and political theory, and any general readers interested in trying to understand and evaluate the role of recognition in the modern world.

Robert Waxenegger Social Media in projektorientierten Unternehmen.

Kenneth Omeje The Crises of Postcoloniality in Africa

The Crises of Postcoloniality in Africa is an assemblage of transdisciplinary essays that offer a spirited reflection on the debate and phenomenon of postcoloniality in Africa, including the changing patterns and ramifications of problems, challenges and opportunities associated with it. A key conceptual rhythm that runs through the various chapters of the book is that, far from being demised, postcoloniality is still firmly embedded in Africa, manifesting itself in both blatant and insidious forms. Among the important themes covered in the book include the concepts of postcolonialism, postcoloniality, and neocolonialism; Africa’s precolonial formations and the impact of colonialism; the enduring patterns of colonial legacies in Africa; the persistent contradictions between African indigenous institutions and western versions of modernity; the unravelling of the postcolonial state and issues of armed conflict, conflict intervention and peacebuilding; postcolonial imperialism in Africa and the US-led global war on terror, the historical and postcolonial contexts of gender relations in Africa, as well as pan-Africanism and regionalist approaches to redressing the crises of postcoloniality.

Spirituality is an important part of diversity as determined by the National Association of Social Work Code of Ethics and the Education Policy and Education Standards. However, social work education is lacking in this area. Social workers report feeling unprepared and uncomfortable in addressing spirituality with clients. The purpose of this study was to compare hospice, mental health, and hospital social workers' perspectives, utilization and education on the use of spirituality in practice. A total of 41 social workers were surveyed and answers were analyzed with a Chi-Square and One-Way ANOVA. There was no difference in perspectives of spirituality between hospice, mental health and hospital social work respondents. There were some minor statistically significant differences in the utilization and training components, but overall, they were low in all three groups.

The rise of digital photography and imaging has transformed the landscape of visual communication and culture. Events, activities, moments, objects, and people are ‘captured' and distributed as images on an unprecedented scale. Many of these are shared publicly; some remain private, others become intellectual property, and some have the potential to shape global events. In this timely introduction, the ubiquity of photography is explored in relation to interdisciplinary debates about changes in the production, distribution, and consumption of images in digital culture. Ubiquitous Photography provides a critical examination of the technologies, practices, and cultural significance of digital photography, placing the phenomenon in historical, social, and political-economic context. It examines shifts in image-making, storage, commodification, and interpretation as highly significant processes of digitally mediated communication in an increasingly image-rich culture. It covers debates in social and cultural theory, the history and politics of image-making and manipulation, the current explosion in amateur photography, tagging and sharing via social networking, and citizen journalism. The book engages with key contemporary theoretical issues about memory and mobility, authorship and authenticity, immediacy and preservation, and the increased visibility of ordinary social life. Drawing upon a range of sources and original empirical research, Ubiquitous Photography provides a comprehensive introduction to critical academic debate and concrete developments in the field of digital photography. It is essential reading for students and scholars interested in media and society, visual culture, and digital technology.
