Technical demands for magnesium alloys are sufficient room, and elevated temperature mechanical properties, as well as corrosion resistance according to desired application. A new class of magnesium alloys based on the Mg-Sn system has been studied with many ternary alloying elements with emphasis on the Mg-Sn-Ca system due to their attractive property profile especially concerning creep resistance. This research work investigates the effect of 3 wt.% Al additions on two selected Mg- Sn-Ca alloys namely the Mg-3Sn-2Ca (TX32) alloy, and the Mg-9Sn-1Ca (TX91)alloy at different temper conditions, with the aim of improving room temperature mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. A comparison of experimental results for the new Mg-Sn-Al-Ca (TAX) alloys, with their base Mg-Sn-Ca (TX) alloys, is performed, and explicitly discussed. The results showed enhanced hardening response in some of the alloys while the corrosion resistance deteriorated significantly. Al additions were found to have a favorable effect on strength of Mg-Sn-Ca(TX) alloys while they caused rapid decrease in their corrosion resistance.

This general model is then concretized to the description of specific compounds in the four fundamental classes of amorphous solids, as well as amorphous polyethylene and poly(methyl)methacrylate, emphasizing its versatility and descriptive power. Finally, he includes example applications to indicate the abundance of amorphous materials in modern-day technology, thus illustrating the importance of a better understanding of their structure and properties. Equally ideal as supplementary reading in courses on crystallography, mineralogy, solid state physics, and materials science where amorphous materials have played only a minor role until now.

There have been extraordinary developments in nanomaterials in the past two decades. Nanomaterial processing is one of the key components for this success. This volume, titled Processing of Nanoparticle Materials and Nanostructured Films, is a collection of the papers presented at Controlled Processing of Nanoparticle-based Materials and Nanostructured Films symposium held during the Materials Science and Technology 2009 conference (MS&T’09), October 25-29, 2009 in Pittsburgh, PA. It summarizes the progress that has been achieved most recently in understanding and processing nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. Nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films hold great promise to enable a broad range of new applications. This includes high energy conversion efficiency fuel cells, smart materials, high performance sensors, and structural materials under extreme environments. However, many barriers still exist in understanding and controlling the processing of nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. In particular, agglomeration must be controlled in powder synthesis and processing to enable the fabrication of homogeneous green or composite microstructures, and microstructure evolution must be controlled to preserve the size and properties of the nanostructures in the finished materials. Biomedical shape memory alloys are required to have a superior corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and stable shape memory properties. Among many shape memory alloys, only NiTi alloys have been widely applied for biomedical applications, because they satisfy the above requirements. However, it has been pointed out that pure nickel is a toxic element and cause nickel hypersensitivity. It is preferable to develop absolutely safe nickel free titanium based shape memory alloys composed of non-toxic elements such as niobium for biomedical applications. In this book, the effect of molybdenum addition in Ti-Nb binary alloy was investigated. Two alloys with varying compositions namely alloy 1 (Ti-26at%Nb) and alloy 2 (Ti-26at%Nb-0.1at%Mo) were developed. After homogenization and cold rolling, samples of dimensions 30×3×0.86 mm were prepared using diamond cutting machine. The prepared samples were solution treated and then subjected to different tests to evaluate their properties. There is slight increase in micro-hardness (Hv) with increase in molybdenum. XRD spectra revealed the presence of two phases in the solution treated samples, α-martensite (Ti4Nb) and retained austenite (β).

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, grade: 1,0, Dresden Technical University (Fakultät für Maschinenwesen), language: English, abstract: The first aim of the present work is to design, built and test a device being capable of rapidly heating and subsequently immediately quenching bulk metallic glass (BMG) specimens in a uniform and reproducible manner. The heating and ejection process of the BMG specimen is temperature-controlled, so that the heating rate and temperature to which the BMG is annealed to, can be varied.BMG composites consisting of B2 CuZr crystalline particles embedded in the glass shall be prepared. The occurrence of the shape-memory B2 CuZr phase and a good glass-forming ability limit the selection of the alloy system to Cu-Zr-Al. The high-temperature B2 CuZr phase is metastable at room temperature, yet rapid cooling of Cu-Zr-Al-based alloys enables to cast B2 CuZr BMG composites. Recrystallization has been extensively utilized for variety of materials to modify the microstructure and achieving desired mechanical properties. Therefore, characterization of recrystallization is an important aspect. However, most of the existing characterization techniques are either not in-situ in nature or too complex. In the present work, a novel method of spline-based isogeometric approximation and robust numerical differentiation has been originated and employed to the in-situ resistivity data to characterize recrystallization. It has been shown that this method is able to reveal the elusive effects of recrystallization from the in-situ electrical resistivity measurements. An extensive experimental work on Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Fe-Mn alloys, which are extensively used in automotive industry, showed that this method is sensitive, reliable, accurate and efficient. An extensive literature on the recrystallization and related phenomena, resistivity measurements and cubic splines has also been provided in the book. This work should be useful to the people involved in research and development activities, especially characterization of materials, in industry as well as academia.

Aluminium alloys have been widely used in composite materials in order to promote an enhancement in its properties while reducing weight. As in the production of new composites with a significant difference in mechanical and thermo-physical properties fusion welding processes enhances the formation of undesired intermetallics. Those limitations have driven research on solid state technologies, such as Friction Stir Welding (FSW), for joining dissimilar materials. An investigation was conducted aimed to develop composites in AA 1XXX series with NiTi by FSW. Different reinforcing material shapes were investigated, analyzed the interfaces and material flows. The final product was mechanically characterized. It was observed an increase of 70 % of ultimate tensile strength, compared to Al base material and yielding between the two dissimilar materials was greater than the Al lap joint yield stress. The final composite depicted a good electrical conductivity, reducing less than 3 % IACS of the Al base material. Thus, a composite with a strong mechanical bonding was produced, maintaining the original functional properties of the NiTi alloy and the electrical properties of Aluminium.

Furthermore, this paper deals with the author's technique of backdating as a strategy to indirectly comment on Chartism. The examination then turns to the novel's representation of the Luddites, and discusses whether the portrayal of the machine wreckers is just a "lurid travesty", as Terry Eagleton contends (cf. Most of the local societies in which Al-Qaida and its affiliates and offshoots operate in the Middle East and Africa have a predominantly tribal or at least have a strong tribal component (Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Mali, and Sinai). Countering Al-Qaida's continuing presence, therefore, requires addressing the tribal milieu and understanding Al-Qaida's critical vulnerabilities when it operates in tribal societies. In this context, the capability that tribally-based militias provide may be one of the most effective tools against Al-Qaida, and may offer a cost-effective mechanism serving as a force multiplier for U.S. forces. It could reduce the need for U.S. force commitment on the ground in environments that might offer unfavorable conditions for a U.S. Landpower footprint.

The presented manuscript comprises the behavior of aluminium alloys upon the exposure of organic acid and it also shows the inhibition behavior of various organic and inorganic inhibitors. For the determination of corrosion and inhibition, weight loss and potentiostatic methods are used. Tafel graphs, are also plotted and conductance of the solution is measured for its support. It was observed that inhibition efficiency was decreased on increasing temperature. Langmuir adsorption isotherm was found to obey by all the inhibitors.

Optical waveguides take a prominent role in photonics because they are able to trap and to transport light efficiently between a point of excitation and a point of detection. Moreover, waveguides allow the management of many of the fundamental properties of light and allow highly controlled interaction with other optical systems. For this reason waveguides are ubiquitous in telecommunications, sensing, spectroscopy, light sources, and high power light delivery. Nanostructured and subwavelength waveguides have additional advantages; they are able to confine light at a length scale below the diffraction limit and enhance or suppress light-matter interaction, as well as manage fundamental properties of light such as speed and direction of energy and phase propagation. This book presents semi-analytical theory and practical applications of a large number of subwavelength and nanostructured optical waveguides and fibers operating in various regions of the electromagnetic spectrum including visible, near and mid-IR and THz. A large number of approximate, while highly precise analytical expressions are derived that describe various modal properties of the planar and circular isotropic, anisotropic, and metamaterial waveguides and fibers, as well as surface waves propagating on planar, and circular interfaces. A variety of naturally occurring and artificial materials are also considered such as dielectrics, metals, polar materials, anisotropic all-dielectric and metal-dielectric metamaterials.
