Ill-posed problem has been steadily and surely gaining popularity in mathematical literature for many years. It occurs in a wide variety of applications such as geophysics, astrometry, mathematical biology, and image restoration. The notion of a well-posed problem and ill-posed problem goes back to a famous paper by Jacques Hadamard published in 1902. In many science and engineering applications it is necessary to compute an approximate solution of the linear system. In this work, we present and analyze a recent method called dynamical systems method (DSM) for a stable solution of linear ill-posed problems. Also, we present one of the traditional stable method for solving linear ill-posed problems, this method called Tikhonov or variational regularization method. Comparison between the two methods is one of the main goals of this book. This book is highly recommended to both postgraduate students and researchers in wide variety of applications.

The focus of this book is on «ill-posed inverse problems». These problems cannot be solved only on the basis of observed data. The building of solutions involves the recognition of other pieces of a priori information. These solutions are then specific to the pieces of information taken into account. Clarifying and taking these pieces of information into account is necessary for grasping the domain of validity and the field of application for the solutions built. For too long, the interest in these problems has remained very limited in the signal-image community. However, the community has since recognized that these matters are more interesting and they have become the subject of much greater enthusiasm. From the application field’s point of view, a significant part of the book is devoted to conventional subjects in the field of inversion: biological and medical imaging, astronomy, non-destructive evaluation, processing of video sequences, target tracking, sensor networks and digital communications. The variety of chapters is also clear, when we examine the acquisition modalities at stake: conventional modalities, such as tomography and NMR, visible or infrared optical imaging, or more recent modalities such as atomic force imaging and polarized light imaging.

The transportation problem, as a particular case of a linear programme, has probably the highest relative frequency with which appears in applications, and the maritime container transportation problem is an important particular case of it. Far from being a comprehensive and exhaustive monograph on this field, our book is strictly oriented to the numerical solution of such types of problems, with emphasis on the unbalanced and inconsistent ones (i.e. when the set of classical feasible solutions is empty and least squares ones has to be considered). This type of problems may appear in practice and the classical linear programming solution techniques cannot handle the inconsistency difficulty. The book addresses to two main categories of readers: first of all, to people working directly in the real world context of maritime transportation problems, as ship crews, ship owners, port workers, container terminal workers, and the second one including researchers (Master and PhD students or higher level) working in the field of design and development of new and efficient numerical methods for the special case of unbalanced and inconsistent problems.

Triangulations, and more precisely meshes, are at the heart of many problems relating to a wide variety of scientific disciplines, and in particular numerical simulations of all kinds of physical phenomena. In numerical simulations, the functional spaces of approximation used to search for solutions are defined from meshes, and in this sense these meshes play a fundamental role. This strong link between the meshes and functional spaces leads us to consider advanced simulation methods in which the meshes are adapted to the behaviors of the underlying physical phenomena. This book presents the basic elements of this meshing vision.

The structure of approximate solutions of autonomous discrete-time optimal control problems and individual turnpike results for optimal control problems without convexity (concavity) assumptions are examined in this book. In particular, the book focuses on the properties of approximate solutions which are independent of the length of the interval, for all sufficiently large intervals; these results apply to the so-called turnpike property of the optimal control problems. By encompassing the so-called turnpike property the approximate solutions of the problems are determined primarily by the objective function and are fundamentally independent of the choice of interval and endpoint conditions, except in regions close to the endpoints. This book also explores the turnpike phenomenon for two large classes of autonomous optimal control problems. It is illustrated that the turnpike phenomenon is stable for an optimal control problem if the corresponding infinite horizon optimal control problem possesses an asymptotic turnpike property. If an optimal control problem belonging to the first class possesses the turnpike property, then the turnpike is a singleton (unit set). The stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function and of a constraint map is established. For the second class of problems where the turnpike phenomenon is not necessarily a singleton the stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function is...

In this work several approaches of a stable method for construction of the diagnostic matrix for gas turbine engine are being researched, when initial data are given inexactly, and their maximal deviation estimation is known. The essence of the problem is the following: the equations in minor deviations describing the gas turbine engine give us system of linear algebraic equations AC=B, where the matrix C is called a diagnostic matrix, the matrix A components comprise the coefficients of the calculated parameters, and the matrix B components comprise the coefficients of measured parameters. However, as a rule the matrix A is sparse and ill-conditioned matrix, so there is a problem of stable inversion, as a result the problem becomes ill-posed. Therefore, methods of ill-posed problem theory are used: normal pseudosolution is searched instead of an exact solution (it is important to note that normal pseudosolution is not always approximates to the exact one) using classical Tikhonov's regularization method, however, that method causes inherent obstacles, which possible solutions are discovered. There are described 3 approaches of finding the regularization parameter.

This book studies methods to concretely address inverse problems. An inverse problem arises when the causes that produced a given effect must be determined or when one seeks to indirectly estimate the parameters of a physical system. The author uses practical examples to illustrate inverse problems in physical sciences. He presents the techniques and specific methods chosen to solve inverse problems in a general domain of application, choosing to focus on a small number of methods that can be used in most applications. This book is aimed at readers with a mathematical and scientific computing background. Despite this, it is a book with a practical perspective. The methods described are applicable, have been applied, and are often illustrated by numerical examples.

This book contains mathematical preliminaries in which basic definitions of fractional derivatives and spaces are presented. The central part of the book contains various applications in classical mechanics including fields such as: viscoelasticity, heat conduction, wave propagation and variational Hamilton–type principles. Mathematical rigor will be observed in the applications. The authors provide some problems formulated in the classical setting and some in the distributional setting. The solutions to these problems are presented in analytical form and these solutions are then analyzed numerically. Theorems on the existence of solutions will be presented for all examples discussed. In using various constitutive equations the restrictions following from the second law of thermodynamics will be implemented. Finally, the physical implications of obtained solutions will be discussed in detail.

A comprehensive treatment of the theory and practice of equilibrium finite element analysis in the context of solid and structural mechanics Equilibrium Finite Element Formulations is an up to date exposition on hybrid equilibrium finite elements, which are based on the direct approximation of the stress fields. The focus is on their derivation and on the advantages that strong forms of equilibrium can have, either when used independently or together with the more conventional displacement based elements. These elements solve two important problems of concern to computational structural mechanics: a rational basis for error estimation, which leads to bounds on quantities of interest that are vital for verification of the output and provision of outputs immediately useful to the engineer for structural design and assessment. Key features: Unique in its coverage of equilibrium – an essential reference work for those seeking solutions that are strongly equilibrated. The approach is not widely known, and should be of benefit to structural design and assessment. Thorough explanations of the formulations for: 2D and 3D continua, thick and thin bending of plates and potential problems; covering mainly linear aspects of behaviour, but also with some excursions into non-linearity. Highly relevant to the verification of numerical solutions, the basis for obtaining bounds of the errors is explained in detail. Simple illustrative examples are given, together with their physical interpretations. The most relevant issues regarding the computational implementation of this approach are presented. When strong equilibrium and finite elements are to be combined, the book is a must-have reference for postgraduate students, researchers in software development or numerical analysis, and industrial practitioners who want to keep up to date with progress in simulation tools. Uses mathematical, numerical, and programming tools to solve differential equations for physical phenomena and engineering problems Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations, Second Edition features the essential principles and applications of problem solving across disciplines such as engineering, physics, and chemistry.
