Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Wirtschaftswissenschaften), language: English, abstract: For many organizations the alignment between social media and organizational culture is a massive challenge because these two concepts do not match in general. The integration of social media in organizations demands preliminary change-oriented cultures which, however, often have inflexible structures that prevent changes. In this thesis, there will be an investigation on the effect of social media integration on the organizational culture by use of literature review, with a special focus on the internal communication within organizations. This thesis first defines the term of social media which are very up-to-date but which are used in many cases so that a differentiated point of view has to be taken. In almost the same manner, the term organizational culture is described. This concept, however, is underestimated because the majority of people do not think of an organizational culture when looking at an organization, but they are rather profit-oriented. Thus, it is crucial to consider this social aspect of an organization. The thesis investigates this concept critically. One of the concerned elements in consequence of the combination between social media and organizational culture is the communication within an organization. An integration of social media tec...

Patient safety is an important current issue, due to the negative repercussions that can occur when things go wrong in a medical setting. In their Third Annual Patient Safety in American Hospitals Report (2006), HealthGrades estimated that 304,702 people died from medical errors between 2002-2004. Organizational climate has been shown capable of influencing many different outcomes, including some critical to patient safety. There is a dearth of research specifically studying how climate factors for nurses in particular relate to patient safety outcomes, and the current effort helps to close that research gap. This study examined how climate factors relate to the patient safety outcome of medication errors. Quarterly attitude data from nurses in eight hospitals were aggregated to the organizational level of analysis to represent organizational climate. Accurate archival figures were used to measure medication errors. The results speak to the importance of an organization being congruent in its communication and implementation of policies and procedures that affect one's daily working life.

This book analyzes the impact of culture on employee justice judgments and reactions toperceptions of fairness and unfairness. I start this book with the following two questions. Why is a book on culture and organizational justice needed? What does such a book add tothe extant literature on organizational justice, especially, after the publication of the landmarkwork of Colquitt and Greenberg (2005), Handbook of Organizational Justice?Although there are no easy answers to these questions, in the following lines, I explain thereasons why a book on culture and justice is not only needed but also timely. There are at least three reasons for which a book on culture and organizational justice is needed. First, a book on culture andorganizational justice is needed because "there are indications that culture exerts very important and wide-ranging effects onjustice behavior including even generally shaping the likelihood that individuals will experience feelings of injustice" (James,1993, p. 22). Second, globalization has led to the interrelatedness of world economies. Thus, most organizations not only operatein several countries, but they also employ people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The resulting challengeis to find new ways of managing a culturally diverse workforce. Third, justice is inherent to any organized social group. As examples of social systems, organizations are arenas of justice concerns because their members compete for limitedresources...

Building a Culture of Distinction is an organizational change management program. This Facilitator Guide is designed for those individuals who will be leading the program. This book provides a comprehensive, step-by-step process to define and shape your organizational culture and manage organizational change. This program addresses many of the challenges an organization faces that can threaten its success and its bottom line. For example: Have you lost key talent? Do your employees seem stressed and unhappy at work? Are employees neither united by values nor vision? Is the organization growing fast but losing focus? Does your organization need a new direction? Is your organization experiencing a merger or acquisition? Is your strategic planning disconnected from the culture that must support it? Is change needed but no one has a process to make it stick? This Facilitator Guide provides activities and tools to build a culture of distinction. The process has a four-phased cycle. In Phase 1, you will facilitate a Core Culture Assessment where all employees participate in defining the organization’s Core Culture. In Phase 2, you will facilitate a Core Culture Alignment Audit where employees will identity the degree of alignment of the Practices and Projections with the Core Culture, and they will make recommendations to increase alignment. In Phase 3, you will guide the development of a Core Culture Alignment Plan and set measures to monitor change. Finally, in Phase 4, employees w...

Drought pose one of the greater challenge in Africa in general in Ethiopia in particular; Global climate change is now generally considered to be in progress and is expected to result in an increased occurrence of drought in specific regions. Food security will be unsustainable without increasing yield in marginal environments, especially in drought-prone areas. We have to introduce drought tolerant crops which can be used as food and as feed; drought tolerant legume like pigeonpea is well adapted to such kind of environment, hence Pigeonpea can be used as an adaptation option to decrease the effect of climate change especially in Sub-Sahara Africa.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7, University of applied sciences, Cologne, course: Strategic Corporate Management, language: English, abstract: The character of a company´s culture or work climate is gaining in importance. Culture is a product of the core values and business principles that executives espouse, the standards of what is ethically acceptable and what is not, the work practices and behaviours that define "how we do things around here", its approach to people management and style of operating, the "chemistry" and the "personality" that permeates its work environment, and the stories that get told over and over to illustrate and reinforce the company´s values, business principles, and traditions. A company´s culture is important because it influences the organization´s actions and approaches to conduct the business - in a very real sense, the culture is the company´s "operating system" or organizational DNA. All in all, culture as a concept is difficult to define and differs from company to company. The crafting of a strategy represents a managerial commitment to pursue a particular set of actions in growing the business, attracting and pleasing customers, competing successfully, conducting operations, and improving the company´s financial and market performance. Even companies with same strategic and business concepts and comparable success dif...

There are numerous ethnic groups in southern Ethiopia of which most also speak their own language and have distinct cultural trades. But how would the future of the different ethnic groups and their cultural heritage look like in the face of globalization processes? Is this cultural and linguistic diversity now diminishing through globalization processes and becoming replaced by a homogenous "global culture"?This study examines whether the cultures of southern Ethiopia are being penetrated by American popular culture, local cultural products are threatened with extinction and whether traditional lifestyles are becoming abandoned because the people of south Ethiopia are increasingly becoming part of a "global consumer culture". What about "modernization" efforts by development projects and the global spread of formal education through schooling, do they contribute to the elimination of indigenous knowledge systems? And does the spread of the English language already constitute a threat to linguistic diversity? Moreover, the impacts of the arrivals of international tourists and of Christian missionary organizations on the cultures of the different ethnic groups are being examined.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 2,0, University of Tubingen (International Business), language: English, abstract: This thesis explores the significance of organizational justice in international joint ventures (IJV), from an organizational as well as a cultural perspective. The majority of studies on organizational justice were conducted within organizations and in a mono-cultural context. However, in the face of increasing globalization and growing popularity of IJV activities, the study of fairness in a cross-cultural context becomes more and more important. Therefore, this thesis seeks to bring organizational justice into relation with culture by using an IJV context, and serve as a starting point for further research in this area. The three dimensions of justice, distributive, procedural, and interactional justice, positively affect IJV performance through their distinct and interactive effects. In this setting, culture has a moderating influence on justice perceptions, which can be assessed though bringing justice perspectives together with Hofstede's cultural dimensions. Effects on fairness perceptions in different cultures can be outlined and contrasted. On this basis, implications for theoretical discussion and managerial practice in cross-cultural joint ventures can be derived. Together with further research, managers could use these findings to develop transcultural justice competencies. To decide which of ...

Since 2009, a diverse group of developing states that includes China, Brazil, Ethiopia and Costa Rica has been advancing unprecedented pledges to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, offering new, unexpected signs of climate leadership. Some scholars have gone so far as to argue that these targets are now even more ambitious than those put forward by their wealthier counterparts. But what really lies behind these new pledges? What actions are being taken to meet them? And what stumbling blocks lie in the way of their realization? In this book, an international group of scholars seeks to address these questions by analyzing the experiences of twelve states from across Asia, the Americas and Africa. The authors map the evolution of climate policies in each country and examine the complex array of actors, interests, institutions and ideas that has shaped their approaches. Offering the most comprehensive analysis thus far of the unique challenges that developing countries face in the domain of climate change, Climate Governance in the Developing World reveals the political, economic and environmental realities that underpin the pledges made by developing states, and which together determine the chances of success and failure.

The main objectives of this book are to empirically analyze the impact of leader's change-promoting behavior on employee's readiness for change and whether this relationship is mediated by organizational culture in the context of a developing country such as Pakistan. A sample of 205 responses is drawn from managers based in Karachi. With the help of advanced multivariate statistical techniques, the results indicate that leader's change-promoting behavior has a significant positive impact on change readiness and this relationship is partially mediated by organizational culture in Karachi. The findings may be generalized on a larger population in Pakistan. The study supports the theory of one of the six conceptual formations of change readiness which refers it to as an employee's capacity to change. Therefore, managers should clearly advocate the desired change with the help of their own change-prompting behavior as well as establishing a trusting culture in their organization. Both limitations and areas for future research in the context of Pakistan are also discussed.

Top Problems Facing Colleges lists the sixteen most daunting challenges facing the majority of private colleges in America. Many pundits have predicted that hundreds of the approximately two thousand private colleges in existence will fail and close within the next decade or so. What is happening? Over the past fifty years since the 1960s, the majority of college students have gravitated away from private colleges and toward community colleges and public universities, which is the result of massive public higher education expansion during the baby boom college years of the 1970s. The comparative high cost of private colleges, combined with growing doubts about the relative value of private college degrees, has resulted in major enrollment declines that are placing many private colleges in financial jeopardy. At the same time, the Internet is making these problems more apparent to prospective students and their families, thereby intensifying the seriousness of the crisis for many smaller, unendowed colleges. Top Problems offers strategies for colleges being subjected to these declines that can help avoid demise and construct a template for survival and even future success. The book is written for senior officers and trustees of private enrollment-revenue-dependent colleges. The sixteen problems cited include the need for challenged colleges to completely rethink the way in which they select presidents and trustees, along with the need for better cost management that will likel...

Agriculture continues to be an important sector fuelling economic growth. Rapidly changing climate is already affecting the production of food and feed, industrial crops, livestock, and seafood. In developing countries like India, agriculture and allied sectors contribute significantly to the gross domestic product. Therefore, evolving strategies to sustain a stable growth of the farming sector is essential for feeding a growing population and poverty alleviation in the face of global climate change. It is crucial to carry out a comprehensive analysis of different aspects of climate change to effectively combat its negative impacts on food production systems and landscapes and reap its potential benefits in agricultural production. This volume of the Research in Organizational Sciences is entitled "Received Wisdom, Kernels of Truth, and Boundary Conditions in Organizational Studies". Received wisdom is knowledge imparted to peopleby others and is based on authority and tenacity as sources of human knowledge. Authority refers to theacceptance of knowledge as truth because of the position and credibility of the knowledge source. Tenacityrefers to the continued presentation of a particular bit of information by a source until this bit ofinformation is accepted as true by receivers. The problem for organizational studies, however, is that thisreceived wisdom often becomes unquestioned assumptions which guide interpretation of the world and decisions made about the world. Receivedwisdom, therefore, may lead to organizational practices which provide little or no benefit to the organization and, potentially, negative organizationaleffects, because this received wisdom is no longer valid. The 14 papers in this volume all, in some way, strive to question received wisdom and presentalternatives which expand our understanding of organizational behavior in some way. The chapters in this volume each strive to present new ways ofunderstanding organizational constructs, and in so doing reveal how received wisdom has often led to confirmation bias in organizational science. Theknowledge that some perceived truths are actually the products of received wisdom and do not stand up to close scrutiny shakes up things ...

The first section focuses on reviewing our knowledge withrespect to the specific notions of ethical behavior and corruption. These chapters aim toprovide definitions, boundary conditions and suggestions for future research on thesenotions. The second section focuses on the intra-individual processes (affect, cognition and motivation)that determine why and how people display unethical behavior and are able to justifythis kind of behavior to a certain extent. In these chapters the common theme is that givenspecific circumstances psychological processes are activated that bias perceptions of ethical behavior and decision making. The third section explores how organizational features frame the organizational setting and climate. These chapters focuson how employment of sanctions, procedurally fair leadership and a general code of conduct shapes perceptions of theorganizational climate in ways that it becomes clear to organizational members how just, moral and retributive the organizationwill be in case of unethical behavior.

The rapidly expanding population of youth gangs and street children is one of the most disturbing issues in many cities around the world. These children are perceived to be in a constant state of destitution, violence and vagrancy, and therefore must be a serious threat to society, needing heavy-handed intervention and 'tough love' from concerned adults to impose societal norms on them and turn them into responsible citizens. However, such norms are far from the lived reality of these children. The situation is further complicated by gender-based violence and masculinist ideologies found in the wider Ethiopian culture, which influence the proliferation of youth gangs. By focusing on gender as the defining element of these children's lives - as they describe it in their own words - this book offers a clear analysis of how the unequal and antagonistic gender relations that are tolerated and normalized by everyday school and family structures shape their lives at home and on the street.Paula Heinonen (née Sinicco) is of Ethiopian/Italian parentage and grew up in Addis Ababa. She is College Lecturer in Gender Studies and the Anthropology of Development at Hertford, University of Oxford. Previously, she was Tutor and Visiting Fellows Program Coordinator at the International Gender Studies Centre, University of Oxford and Senior Lecturer in Anthropology and Head of Research at the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This, however, cannot hide the prospect of the IP regime if the country has liberalized trade, good inflow of FDI and promising technological capability. The Status of Ethiopia in the aforementioned criterion is addressed. Adaptation is the poor cousin of the climate change challenge – the glamour of international debate is around global mitigation agreements, while the bottom-up activities of adaptation, carried out in community halls and local government offices, are often overlooked. Yet, as international forums fail to deliver reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the world is realising that effective adaptation will be essential across all sectors to deal with the unavoidable impacts of climate change. The need to understand how to adapt effectively, and to develop appropriate adaptation options and actions, is becoming increasingly urgent. This book reports the current state of knowledge on climate change adaptation, and seeks to expose and debate key issues in adaptation research and practice. It is framed around a number of critical areas of adaptation theory and practice, including: Advances in adaptation thinking, Enabling frameworks and policy for adaptation, Engaging and communicating with practitioners, Key challenges in adaptation and development, Management of natural systems and agriculture under climate change, Ensuring water security under a changing climate, Urban infrastructure and livelihoods, and The nexus between extremes, disaster management and adaptation. It includes contributions from many of the leading thinkers and practitioners in adaptation today. The book is based on key contributions from the First International Conference on Climate Change Adaptation ‘Climate Adaptation Futures’, held on the Gold Coast, Australia, in June 2010. That three-day meeting of over 1000 researchers and practitioners in adaptation from 50 countries was the first of its kind. So diversity is viewed as an initiative or a program with no sustainability at the organizational level.ensure employees willingly practice inclusion regardless of personal beliefs. While there is still racism, prejudice, sexism, and other exclusionist attitudes among people in the workplace, organizational leaders have the power and responsibility to mandate a climate of inclusion. Supporting diversity and inclusion is also a prerequisite for capitalizing on the ideas that diverse people can bring to your organization. Most diversity practices used by organizations do not actually promote inclusion, and exclusion continues to exist. It has been widely reported that issues related to organizational context appear frequently in discussions of information systems success. The statement that the information system did not fit the behavioral context in an organization is often part of the explanation of why particular information system encountered unanticipated resistance and never met expectation. While this context has been intensively studied, we still lack evidence on how this organizational context is affecting the success of information system from a managerial action perspective. This type of managerial involvement is often neglected to the extent that it became an essential obstacle to organizational performance. The objective of Creating a Culture for Information Systems Success is to assist CIOs and IT managers on how to use their managerial actions to create a suitable cultural environment in the organization, which leads to a successful implementation of information systems. This book will also provide guidelines for managers on how to create this organizational context, measure it, and ensure it leads to a successful implementation and use of information systems. The main theme is to explain how behavioral context of an organization led by their managers and executives would lead to the success of the information systems function.

Although we are seeing more weather and climate extremes, individual extreme events are very diverse and generalization of trends is difficult. For example, mid-latitude and subtropical climate extremes such as heat waves, hurricanes and droughts have increased, and could have been caused by processes including arctic amplification, jet stream meandering, and tropical expansion. This volume documents various climate extreme events and associated changes that have been analyzed through diagnostics, modeling, and statistical approaches. The identification of patterns and mechanisms can aid the prediction of future extreme events. Volume highlights include: Compilation of processes and mechanisms unique to individual weather and climate extreme events Discussion of climate model performance in terms of simulating high-impact weather and climate extremes Summary of various existing theories, including controversial ones, on how climate extremes will continue to become stronger and more frequent Climate Extremes: Patterns and Mechanisms is a valuable resource for scientists and graduate students in the fields of geophysics, climate physics, natural hazards, and environmental science.
