The first edition of “Microstrip Filters for RF/Microwave Applications” was published in 2001. Over the years the book has been well received and is used extensively in both academia and industry by microwave researchers and engineers. From its inception as a manuscript the book is almost 8 years old. While the fundamentals of filter circuits have not changed, further innovations in filter realizations and other applications have occurred with changes in the technology and use of new fabrication processes, such as the recent advances in RF MEMS and ferroelectric films for tunable filters; the use of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrates for multilayer circuits, as well as the new filters for dual-band, multi-band and ultra wideband (UWB) applications. Although the microstrip filter remains as the main transmission line medium for these new developments, there has been a new trend of using combined planar transmission line structures such as co-planar waveguide (CPW) and slotted ground structures for novel physical implementations beyond the single layer in order to achieve filter miniaturization and better performance. Also, over the years, practitioners have suggested topics that should be added for completeness, or deleted in some cases, as they were not very useful in practice. In view of the above, the authors are proposing a revised version of the “Microstrip Filters for RF/Microwave Applications” text and a slightly changed book title of “Planar Filters for RF/Microwave Applications” to reflect the aforementioned trends in the revised book.

RF interferometric sensors are attractive for various sensing applications that require every fine resolution and accuracy as well as fast speed. The book also presents two millimeter-wave interferometric sensors realized using RF integrated circuits. The developed millimeter-wave homodyne sensor shows sub-millimeter resolution in the order of 0.05 mm without correction for the non-linear phase response of the sensor's quadrature mixer. The designed millimeter-wave double-channel homodyne sensor provides a resolution of only 0.01 mm, or 1/840th of the operating wavelength, and can inherently suppress the non-linearity of the sensor's quadrature mixer. The experimental results of displacement and velocity measurement are presented as a way to demonstrate the sensing ability of the RF interferometry and to illustrate its many possible applications in sensing. The book is succinct, yet the material is very much self-contained, enabling readers with an undergraduate background in electrical engineering or physics with some experiences or graduate courses in RF circuits to understand easily.

Long design cycles due to the inability to predict silicon realities is a well-known problem that plagues analog/RF integrated circuit product development. As this problem worsens for nanoscale IC technologies, the high cost of design and multiple manufacturing spins causes fewer products to have the volume required to support full custom implementation. We propose a regular analog/RF IC using metal-mask configurability design methodology ORACLE, which is a combination of reuse and shared-use by formulating the synthesis problem as an optimization with recourse problem. Using a two-stage geometric programming with recourse approach, ORACLE solves for both the globally optimal shared and application-specific variables. Furthermore, robust optimization is proposed to treat the design with variability issue, further enhancing the ORACLE methodology by providing yield bound for each configuration of regular designs.

The complexity requirements of future wireless communication systems now indeed demand a more general theoretically robust design methodology for nonlinear circuits, such as the power amplifiers. The present design methodology for nonlinear Radio Frequency components and circuits has become a key hindrance in the evaluation, development and testing of modern communication systems. The fundamental nature of this engineering challenge makes it highly unlikely to be addressed within the competitive Radio Frequency industry with short-term profitability, time to market and risk aversion considerations. The book, therefore, includes developing advanced waveform measurement setups, multi-tone measurement techniques, characterization and modelling of nonlinear distortion in microwave power transistors and design of high-power and spectrum-efficient RF power amplifiers for future wireless communication systems. Further enlists the key impediments in Power Amplifier design through the application of waveform engineering to embrace simultaneously efficiency and linearity objectives of power amplifier design as well as investigate the most robust and appropriate behavioral model formulation that includes memory effects.

The calibration procedure required for manufacturing accurate sensors is, presently, time consuming and hard to automate. Hence, it contributes considerably to the sensor fabrication costs. This book explains how to include a digitally programmable calibration function in an integrated smart sensor. Calibration circuits, using analog signal processing, digital signal processing, or a mixed-mode technique based on sigma-delta modulation, are presented, as well as the other circuits needed in a smart sensor. The combination of a programmable calibration circuit and a digital bus interface, included in the integrated smart sensor, enables automation of the calibration procedure for a large batch of sensors at a time. This will help to reduce the costs of calibration in sensor production, and thus, to decrease the price of a sensor.

A fully comprehensive reference combining digital communications and RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits) in one complete volume There are many books which focus on the physical implementation of the RF/analog part of transceivers, such as the CMOS design, or the signal processing involved in digital communications. However, there is little material dedicated to transceiver architecture and system design. Similarly, much of the existing literature looks at concepts useful for dimensioning, yet offers little practical information on how to proceed for dimensioning a line-up from scratch, and on the reasons for proceeding that way. This book redresses the balance by explaining the architecture of transceivers and their dimensioning from the perspective of a RFIC architect from within industry. It bridges the gap between digital communication systems and radiofrequency integrated circuit design, covering wireless transceiver architecture and system design from both system level and circuit designer aspects. • Covers digital communication theory, electromagnetism theory and wireless networks organization, from theories to implementation, for deriving the minimum set of constraints to be fulfilled by transceivers • Details the limitations in the physical implementation of transceivers to be considered for their dimensioning, in terms of noise, nonlinearity, and RF impairments • Presents transceiver architecture and system design in terms of transceivers budgets, transceivers architectures, and algorithms for transceivers

In our digital world, integrated circuits are present in nearly every moment of our daily life. Even when using the coffee machine in the morning, or driving our car to work, we interact with integrated circuits. The increasing spread of information technology in virtually all areas of life in the industrialized world offers a broad range of attack vectors. So far, mainly software-based attacks have been considered and investigated, while hardware-based attacks have attracted comparatively little interest. The design and production process of integrated circuits is mostly decentralized due to financial and logistical reasons. Therefore, a high level of trust has to be established between the parties involved in the hardware development lifecycle. During the complex production chain, malicious attackers can insert non-specified functionality by exploiting untrusted processes and backdoors. This work deals with the ways in which such hidden, non-specified functionality can be introduced into hardware systems. After briefly outlining the development and production process of hardware systems, we systematically describe a new type of threat, the hardware Trojan. We provide a historical overview of the development of research activities in this field to show the growing interest of international research in this topic. Current work is considered in more detail. We discuss the components that make up a hardware Trojan as well as the parameters that are relevant for an attack. Furth...

With the ongoing trend towards low-voltage and low-power operation, the area of analog integrated filters is facing serious challenges. Consequently, noise analysis becomes essential in designing translinear circuits, or in general, log-domain filters. Due to the inherited companding behaviour and nonstationary nature of the translinear noise sources, an efficient nonlinear noise analysis method is necessary. This work is to present several noise analysis methods for translinear circuits. Based on the large-signal calculation, the first-order noise and signal-noise intermodulation of static and dynamic translinear circuits are calculated on the basis of existing current-mode analysis methods. Then, two important noise specifications, power spectral density and signal-to-noise ratio, are specified. For dynamic translinear circuits, two methods, either combining noise sources and moving them to output, or process them in situ and individually, are elaborated. Through these methods, we can start noise analysis at early design stage, to ensure good performance. Therefore, this work should be useful to professionals in circuit design and troubleshooting.

New challenges are constantly faced in the development of RF and microwave filters, which have not only sustained but fuelled microwave filter research over the many years. These developments have encouraged new solutions for the realization of compact, low loss, highly selective RF and microwave filters. This text presents a novel distributed dual-mode resonator configuration which allows the realisation of tunable, highly compact microwave bandpass filters. Many interesting and attractive characteristics of the resonator are explored in detail. Application of this resonator in bandpass filter design is discussed with examples illustrating the design process with theoretical and experimental results to showcase filter performance. All-pole, generalised Chebyshev and dual-bandpass filters are shown to be easily developed with the novel resonator while achieveing a highly miniature footprint and a wide stopband. Finally, by employing a novel non-linear distortion enhancement technique readily applicable to this resonator, the design of highly linear tunable filter is discussed.
