Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Finance, , course: Policy Exchange, language: English, abstract: The challenge presented is to answer the following question: Ifmember states leave the Economic and Monetary Union, what is the best way for the economic process to be managed to provide the soundest foundation for the future growth and prosperity of the current membership? The world is suffering from an ailment known as fiat money, and the eurozone is experiencing the most debilitating symptoms. The ailment's cure may be the implementation of a full gold & silver standard along with revisions to the Maastricht Treaty and to the Stability and Growth Pact that would incentivize member states to adopt fiscal prudence and to nurture sound economies. In order to efficiently and effectively support such an argument, this paper must first discuss the problems inherent to fiat money. It will explain why money backed solely by a promise inevitably leads to economic hardship. The paper will then argue the case for money fully backed by gold & silver, providing evidence of its stability and conduciveness to economic prosperity. Furthermore, the paper will specify conditions that would be essential in fostering a full precious metals standard. Most importantly, the paper will argue that to provide the soundest foundation for the future growth and prosperity of the eurozone, member states must remain united. ...

The Indian economy continues to grow as a global economic powerhouse.India’s development is particularly impressive given the considerable obstacles in fostering economic growth. These obstacles are truly epic with widespread poverty, limited natural resources, and one of the largest populations. While this growth is impressive, India continues to have hundreds of millions in abject poverty and much of the economic prosperity has been fairly localized to specific regions and sectors. At the same time,it is important to note, that India’s economic miracle is a recent phenomenon & that future prospects are far from certain. How well the Indian people & government will be able to channel current growth into long-term prosperity remains to be seen. Moreover, India is an incredibly diverse nation with widely varying cultural, economic, political, and religious norms. Thus, the implications for income equality are indeed significant in maintaining stability in such a large & diverse nation.By comparing India’s economic growth and income equality, one can determine whether the recent economic prosperity has been realized by many or relatively few individuals.

Liberalizing reforms were intended to have a strong impact on the investment process. The method of allowing FDI started in the 1990's, when the economy was liberalized, thereby allowing foreign goods to this paper tries to examine the developments in both economic and political aspects, relating to the growth in the FDI. We also evaluate and try to establish whether there is any relation between the FDI and the economic growth and prosperity across the various Indian states. In other words, has the link between the economic growth of a state and the amount of FDI become stronger in the aftermath of the reforms? Another point to notice is that there appears to be a large amount of regional income disparity between the states due to the larger amounts of association of FDI.

This is a fictional work intended to advance the usefulness and virtues of nonsense. It is written from the perspective of the entirely fictional Society of Assorted Misfits who are beholden to nonsense and joyfully thrive in advancement of political incorrectness and rejection of elitist common sense, common values and especially commonly held contemporary beliefs. The book is actuated by attempted humor and an unapologetic satirical look at our social and political settings. Nevertheless, it is not intended to delight anyone. If such happens, it is purely accidental. Likewise, the book has no purpose to disappoint anyone. If it happens, it is yet another accident. And if any content of the book induces premature consumption of cherished libations, we are not responsible. There are three parts to the book. The first, Understanding Nonsense, is driven by the cogent tenet that understanding is much better than misunderstanding. Presented by Society of Assorted Misfits, it offers extensive explanations about nonsense, including the principles that govern Honorable Nonsense. This part is so detailed, it is also referred to as 'Full Disclosure'. The second titled 'Deconstructing Confusion' along with the third, ""Tripod of Globalism"", provide analytical report by Academy of Honorable Nonsense as to all matters confusing in our political, economic and social settings. The report enunciates and illustrates the tripod anchors of globalism, as sustain...

This book analyses the impact of learning behaviour in different economic environments. All cases are motivated by real world puzzles which cannot be explained by models with rational expectations: The size and persistence of exchange rate volatility, the possibility of financial market crashes without news, and progress in disinflation in transition countries despite limited credibility and conflicting monetary and fiscal policies. In particular, the author shows that adaptive learning behaviour adds additional dynamics to economic models, which are not present under the assumption of full rationality. Certain types of hysteresis in financial markets can be explained by relaxing the rational expectations assumption; credibility and transparency of economic policies matter even more when agents learn about their economic environment; and markets with incomplete and asymmetric information are inherently unstable and prone for market crashes.

Doktorarbeit / Dissertation aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Politik - Politische Systeme - Allgemeines und Vergleiche, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The pace and scope of the Brazilian economic development in the 1980s and 1990s is intrinsically linked to the wide-ranging discussion of political and economic reform projects. In the wake of the crisis of the import-substitution economic model a wide array of approaches and theories revolved around one basic question: When there occurs a crisis in the economy - whatever definition of crisis may be applied in a particular case - which are the best ways of overcoming anti-reform resistances, regain economic growth and promote sustainable and ―future-approved‖ development? In the most general sense a crisis of the political or economic system can be referred to as two-dimensional: on the one hand it means the shattering and dis-equilibrating of a formerly successful status quo, on the other hand it opens up the necessity to find a new status quo (or status quo post) that can be deemed compatible to the new economic, domestic as well as international, circumstances. In fact, the longer a prosperous status quo lasts, the more difficult a subsequent change will get. Path-dependencies develop, stable institutions arise, group interests and organizations take root and expectations about growth, inflation, external trade and other variables cement into place.

This book examines the roots of this idea in the industrial rationalization movement and its manifestations in areas as diverse as domestic organization and economic planning. In doing so, it shows how experts in fields ranging from engineering to the biological sciences shaped visions of a rational socio-economic order from the 1920s to Vichy and beyond.Jackie Clarke is senior lecturer in French Studies at the University of Glasgow. Before analysing the relationship between two economic phenomena in detail, an overview of some of the most prominent empirical empirical studies concerning the relationship between openness to international trade and economic growth in general is provided. As most of them seem to have reached the conclusion that trade influences growth in a positive way, the question for the reasons of this presumably positive relationship arises. The importance of various sources of economic and the Solow-Model and the AK-Model are introduced in order to distinguish between long-run and short-run effects of capital accumulation, learning by doing and R&D on economic growth. The remaining analysis concentrates on one channel in particular, namely on howtrade determines a country's import and export structure. The importance of therange of products a country produces is enormous and affects economic growth and welfare. The fifth section introduces the st...

What is nonsense? How has it permeated our day-to-day speech and thought processes in order to become a vital part of the way we interpret the world? In Necessary Nonsense: Aesthetics, History, Neurology, Psychology, world-renowned expert Irving Massey commits nearly forty years of scholarly musings on the topic of nonsense to the page. Employing a writing style of overlap, repetition, discontinuity, and contradiction in order to describe the history and of grammatical, philosophical, and semantic nonsense, Massey opens his readers to the cognitive possibilities of accepting nonsense as a fundamental human feature. In Necessary Nonsense, Massey explores a range of literary and philosophical subjects, from Immanuel Kant to Lewis Carroll-parsing the ways in which nonsense permeates their writing and dialectics-including an exploration of the inability of those who suffer from Asperger's syndrome to distinguish between metaphor and nonsense, and an investigation of the neural signature of the nonsense words and phrases that occur during the transition from waking to sleep. Massey argues that while nonsense may be the "archenemy of reason," it is also tied to the intrinsic nature of reason; the two, simply put, cannot exist without each other. Through a stunning array of exploratory topics, Massey concludes that we all live under a canopy of nonsense.

The growth of the economy and the spread of prosperity are increasingly seen as problematic rather than positive - a trend Daniel Ben-Ami has termed "growth scepticism". Prosperity is accused of encouraging greed, damaging the environment, causing unhappiness and widening social inequalities. Ferraris for all is a rejoinder to the growth sceptics. Using examples from a range of countries, including the US, the author argues that society as a whole benefits from greater affluence. Action is needed - but to increase prosperity and spread it worldwide, not to limit prosperity as the sceptics would have it. Lively and provocative, this timely book will trigger debate and dissent in equal measure and will be essential reading for everyone who cares about the impact of western policy on developing countries.

What awful expectations and beliefs underlie the messages, spoken and unspoken, as we expect millions of us to lose-lose our health; lose our earning capacity; lose our productivity; lose our minds; and lose our ability to be independent, contributing, and a vital part of our world. One of the reasons I wrote this book is I think there are much healthier, happier, and wealthier expectations/beliefs we can create-for the good of all of us!I believe that most of my age cohort want to be contributors to the prosperity of the world. I know that I do, and that's another good reason for writing this book. If you are one of the really savvy, or lucky, ones who have adequate retirement money and you are fullled by whatever activities you choose, go for it!If, however, you do not have adequate retirement funds, why not choose to be productive and a participant in the world's economy-and in your own? According to the Economic Policy Institute, a 2013 study found that families between the ages of fifty-six and sixty-five had an average of $17,000 in retirement savings. Even with a good social-security payment. It's quite clear most of us won't be soaring very far or high on that!

On the contrary, the up to now existing legal simplification of early retirement together with false prejudices about the achievement potential connected with age discrimination have led to the dismissal of especially older employees in cases of necessary restructuring measures connected with staff reduction. Disaffected Democracies. What's Troubling the Trilateral Countries?

It is a notable irony that as democracy replaces other forms of governing throughout the world, citizens of the most established and prosperous democracies (the United States and Canada, Western European nations, and Japan) increasingly report dissatisfaction and frustration with their governments. Here, some of the most influential political scientists at work today examine why this is so in a volume unique in both its publication of original data and its conclusion that low public confidence in democratic leaders and institutions is a function of actual performance, changing expectations, and the role of information. The culmination of research projects directed by Robert Putnam through the Trilateral Commission and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, these papers present new data that allow more direct comparisons across national borders and more detailed pictures of trends within countries than previously possible. They show that citizen disaffection in the Trilateral democracies is not the result of frayed social fabric, economic insecurity, the end of the Cold War, or public cynicism. Rather, the contributors conclude, the trouble lies with governments and politics themselves. The sources of the problem include governments' diminished capacity to act in an interdependent world and a decline in institutional performance, in combination with new public expectations and uses of information that have altered the criteria by which people judge their governments. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: During the last decades, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been one of the major driving forces of worldwide economic growth, employment and prosperity. Moreover, they are considered to be of high importance in ensuring a friction-free adaptation to economical, technological, and social changes. Especially European economies, foremost Germany being the third largest economy in the world, highly depend on this class of companies as important contributors to the increase of living standards, productivity and competitiveness. As Hommel & Schneider (2003) conclude, any structural problem affecting this mass of economic 'backbone' businesses is thus likely to cause macroeconomic frictions to an economy as a whole Vice versa, it seems reasonable to argue that negative macro-level economic performance can be easily caused by an underperforming SME sector. A glance at the current business environment gives evidence that SMEs are navigating in a dramatic time of economic turmoil: Corporate bankruptcy in Germany e.g. has more than doubled during the last 10 years to a record level of almost 40,000 filed cases in 2003. Bankruptcy rates (i.e. 'Insolvenzquote') have raised to a peak in 2001 since the 1980's - a level, which has not been touched even in times of economic downturn within the last 15 years. The near future of many European SMEs is embossed by big threats and opportunities triggered by the upcoming EU member extensi...

Diploma Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 4,5, , course: postgraduade, language: English, abstract: One of the most outstanding American novels that explore the ethos of the American dream is "The Great Gatsby", a symbolic presentation of America of 1920s, the era of unprecedented prosperity as well as corruption. Each of the characters of "The Great Gatsby" has his/her own concept of the "America Dream" and the goals they want to achieve. The first chapter of the thesis deals with socio-political situation in the U.S. after the WW1. It will analyze the most vital issues for America of that era such as economic prosperity, prohibition, immigration as well as social changes related to the position of women (flappers) and the concept of success (self-made man). Chapter Two analyzes the main features of the American "Roaring 20s" such as materialistic attitude towards life, striving to attain high social status, prohibition as well as social phenomena "flappers" and "self made man" in the context of the events and the characters of The Great Gatsby. Its assumption is to reflect the 1920s through the standpoints of its characters as well as economic and social background of the fiction.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Regional Geography, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne (Geographisches Institut), course: Oberseminar Socio-economic developments in Myanmar, language: English, abstract: IntroductionModern-day Republic of the Union of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is shaped by its geographical idiosyncrasies and its history. Both factors are blended into the socio-economic developments of the country which are addressed in this paper. The focus here lies on the pre-colonial and colonial times. The names Burma and Myanmar are used equivalent and without political implications. To approximate an assessment of those two phases, it is necessary start with a short introduction to the crucial geographic and historical factors affecting the social-economic developments until 1948, the year of Myanmar's independence. The definition of the term socio-economic developments is allocated here as well. Subsequently a short overview on the most important periods of Myanmar's history is added. The following detailed description of history and socio-economic conditions and developments of three distinct periods, the Pyu city states, the Konbaung Dynasty and the British rule, enables a general view on the socio-economic developments of the time before the state's independence in 1948. This paper will proceed along one basic assumption: Independent of their time and their technological cultures all three Empires dealt wi...

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2.0, University of Bonn (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), course: Language and Cognition, language: English, abstract: As far as possible within its limitations, this paper is going to answer the question whether non-synaesthetic people are able to connect the sense of taste, the auditive, the visual and the tactile sense with each other. While most of the synaesthesia studies focus on visual stimuli like colours or graphemes, this paper is mainly concerned with the auditive sense, represented by phonemes. However, since the visual sense is one of the most important senses for humans, and for the sake of comparability, visual stimuli in form of colours and different shapes are also included in the questionnaire. In order to give the reader a proper overview of the topic, a short literature review, which gives information about the literature that is the base of the paper, can be found in chapter 2. Subsequently, in chapter 3, one finds a description of the methodology on which the research based on: the evaluation of data taken from a questionnaire. The presentation of the results of this research follows in chapter 4 as well as a detailed discussion of these results, which can be found in chapter 5 right in front of the conclusion in chapter 6. Everyone is aware of the fact that the sense of taste is strongly connected with the sense of smell. P...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 73%, University of Pretoria, course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: The concept of social learning by Peter Hall has created a wide scholarship which supports the fact that a paradigm shift in a policy change could successfully occur through the promotion of knowledge and new ideas instead of a focus on power relations of the influencers of policy. This research paper operationalizes the concept of social learning in the context of the relationship of Bretton woods institutions and African countries. The paper assumes that the failure of the paradigm of neo-liberalism which was imposed by the Bretton woods institutions in their focus on institutional power relations, hegemony and hierarchy to African countries means that the African continent needs a paradigm shift in its countries' public policy, especially in its countries' macro-economic policies. Scholars have published their dissatisfaction with neo-liberalism as they claim that it impacted the African countries negatively and further worsened their economic crisis instead of stabilizing it. The paper proposes the application of the concept of social learning in the process of policy formulation by African countries so as to reach a paradigm shift, replacing the paradigm of neo-liberalism with an African produced paradigm.

Asia will redraw the map of economic progress over the next twenty-five years. Growth is necessary to solve economic and social problems, but harder to achieve as the age of plenty gives way to the age of scarcities. The challenge opens the doors for an Asian economic model based on shifting of productivity for the individual to groups, ecological productivitiy instead of economic productivity, and a reversal to traditional Asian values - less materialistic than Western values. A new paradigm for economic thinking emerges to replace the one launched in the West 200 years ago.

Paul Osterman Securing Prosperity. The American Labor Market: How It Has Changed and What to Do about It

We live in an age of economic paradox. The dynamism of America's economy is astounding--the country's industries are the most productive in the world and spin off new products and ideas at a bewildering pace. Yet Americans feel deeply uneasy about their economic future. The reason, Paul Osterman explains, is that our recent prosperity is built on the ruins of the once reassuring postwar labor market. Workers can no longer expect stable, full-time jobs and steadily rising incomes. Instead, they face stagnant wages, layoffs, rising inequality, and the increased likelihood of merely temporary work. In Securing Prosperity, Osterman explains in clear, accessible terms why these changes have occurred and lays out an innovative plan for new economic institutions that promises a more secure future. Osterman begins by sketching the rise and fall of the postwar labor market, showing that firms have been the driving force behind recent change. He draws on original surveys of nearly 1,000 corporations to demonstrate that firms have reorganized and downsized not just for the obvious reasons--technological advances and shifts in capital markets--but also to take advantage of new, team-oriented ways of working. We can't turn the clock back, Osterman writes, since that would strip firms of the ability to compete. But he also argues that we should not simply give ourselves up to the mercies of the market. Osterman argues that new policies must engage on two fronts: addressing both...

Construction industry is one of the accelerations for the National economy. However, there are numerous problems exist in the collaborative relationship under the construction process. This paper takes a qualitative approach on a comparative study of collaborative relationship in the construction industry of Mongolia pre- vs. post- institutional transition in 1990. We find that in the pre-transition, collaborative relationship was authority based because of homogenous participant background, command entry barrier, formal decision law on conflict resolution, high sense of liability, rare price adjustment, whereas, in the post-transition, collaborative relationship is trust based or opportunism driven depending on whether long-term partnership and free market competition because of heterogeneous participant background, market entry barrier, economic interest on conflict resolution, divergence of interests causing agency problem, low sense of liability, and flexible price adjustment.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,0, University of Wisconsin-Madison (Economics), course: Economics 477: Economic Development of Africa, language: English, abstract: This paper investigates the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) program in South Africa and its economic justification by analyzing the trends in both, intra- and interracial inequality, since the implementation of BEE. Even though inequality is driven by many different factors, this paper attempts to analyze whether BEE was able to effectively reduce inequality in the way that it was intended. My findings suggest that BEE might have helped to reduce inequality between different races, but that it increased inequality among black people.During Apartheid, black people were excluded from major parts of South Africa's economy. This resulted in an unequal income distribution in South Africa. Even after Apartheid ended in 1994 income was distributed unequally between races. In order to reduce this inequality and equalize opportunities between the different races in South Africa, the government implemented an affirmative action program called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in 2003. In this case and in the following sections, the word "black" defines a racial group, including Africans, coloreds and Indians and can thus be used as synonym for "non-whites." BEE introduced a scorecard which rates companies based on their economic inclusion of black peopl...
