In the present work, various physical properties viz., equilibrium lattice constant, isothermal bulk modulus, its pressure derivative, total energy, equation of state, phonon dispersion, p-dos, electronic band structure, pressure induced phase transition have been calculated using plane wave pseudopotential density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in Quantum Espresso code (QE). The calculated cohesive properties of all compounds studied here are found to agree well with the corresponding theoretical and experimental data available in literature. In particular, the isothermal bulk modulus, which is a direct test of validity of any self consistent calculation of total energy of a material (which is calculated here by fitting the total energies to the Murnaghan equation of state for all four compounds), agrees well with the experimental data and in line with the other theoretical findings.

Alexander Krimmel Electronically highly correlated ternary transition metal oxides

Introduction: Transition metal oxides represent a large class of compounds with a uniquely wide range of electronic properties. Some of these properties, like the magnetism of loadstone, have been known since antiquity. Others, like high-temperature superconductivity have been discovered only recently and indeed would have been thought of being impossible 20 years ago. Transition metal oxides may be good insulators, semiconductors, metals or superconductors. Many of them display a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) as a function of an external control parameter (usually temperature, pressure or chemical composition). The differences of electrical conductivity are also reflected by drastic changes of other physical properties related to the electronic structure. The electrical, magnetic and optical properties of transition metal oxides find a rich field of important technical applications. A classical example is the wide use of ferrites in electronic devices. Further examples of suitable technological applications include wide gap semiconductors, superconductors and thermoelectric materials, to mention just a few. Apart from these exciting electronic properties, some transition metal oxides exhibit a remarkable mechanical and high-temperature stability together with a strong resistance against corrosion, thus forming ideal coating materials. Several transition metal oxides may also serve as catalysts. It was the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates ...

The amorphous-cristalline duality of chalcogenides have always been the foundational principle behind optical storage devices for the unmistakable reflectivity difference between the two solid phases. Likewise, the large amorphous to cristalline resistivity ratio makes chalcogenides pretty suitable for non-volatile solid-state memories. Therefore a better understanding of chalcogenide properties yields a significant improvement of chalcogenide-based memory performances. Herein lies the purpose of this work. Hexagonal and FCC Ge2Sb2Te5 electronic and vibrational structures as well as optical properties are computationally calculated implementing the density functional theory, the density functional perturbation theory, the kramers-Kronig transformation and several optical equations. The resulting electronic and vibrational band structure and density of states, as well as the refractive index, the extinction coefficient, the absorption coefficient, the dielectric function, the optical reflection and the optical transmission successfully match similar calculations or experimental data available in the literature.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Anorganic Chemistry, TU Dortmund (Fakultät für Chemie und Chemische Biologie, Institut für Umweltforschung, Lehrstuhl für analytische chemie), language: English, abstract: Despite a tremendous number of books, monographs, textbooks and review-articles devoted to "organometallic chemistry", the largest part of those contributions have been designed into following structure of the content: (i) Manuals, handbooks and encyclopedias summarizing important organometallic reagents in the organic synthesis; (ii) Books, containing synthetic protocols for obtaining of organometallic reagents; and (iii) Manuals on basic organic reactions catalysed by organometallics. However, there are scarce efforts devoted to studies of reaction mechanisms, physical and chemical properties and structure of organometallics. Furthermore the largest part of available literature has been organized to serve educational needs of undergraduate and graduate students at different areas of chemist including inorganic, organic and/or physical chemistry, so that it has textbook (or a mixing) style, rather than to represent monographs on advances in organometallic research. In this context, our book firstly in the literature has treated experimental and theoretical contributions in understanding reaction mechanisms, involving organosilver reagents as well as molecular structure and physical properties, focusing attention on chemical ...

Using potassium as an example, this work presents a unique approach to the anomalous effects in metals, resulting in knowledge that can be applied to similar materials. Most theoretical predictions on the electric, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties of a simple metal do – surprisingly – not agree with experimental behavior found in alkali metals. The purpose of this volume is to document the many phenomena that have violated expectations. It collects in one place the research by Albert Overhauser, one of the pioneers of the field. His and his collaborators work has led to a unified synthesis of alkali metal peculiarities. The unique collection of 65 reprint papers, commented where necessary to explain the context and perspective, is preceded by a thorough and well paced introduction. The book is meant to advanced solid state physics and science historians. It might also serve as additional reading in advanced solid state physics courses. With a foreword by Mildred and Gene Dresselhaus

The world is populated with many different objects, to which we often attribute properties: we say, for example, that grass is green, that the earth is spherical, that humans are animals, and that murder is wrong. We also take it that these properties are things in their own right: there is something in which being green, or spherical, or an animal, or wrong, consists, and that certain scientific or normative projects are engaged in uncovering the essences of such properties. In light of this, an important question arises: what kind of things should we take properties themselves to be? In Properties, Douglas Edwards gives an engaging, accessible, and up-to-date introduction to the many theories of properties available. Edwards charts the central positions in the debate over properties, including the views that properties are universals, that properties are constructed from tropes, and that properties are classes of objects, and assesses the benefits and disadvantages of each. Attempts to deny the existence of properties are also considered, along with ‘pluralist’ proposals, which aim to accommodate the different kinds of properties that are found in various philosophical debates. Properties is the ideal introduction to this topic and will be an invaluable resource for scholars and students wishing to learn more about the important roles that properties have played, and continue to play, in contemporary philosophy.

Tatiana Glaskova Mechanical and Thermophysical Properties Of Epoxy-Clay Nanocomposite

Polymers and composites are usually exposed to influence of external factors (temperature, humidity, mechanical loading, etc.) which cause a time-dependent change of their structure and properties due to physical and chemical transformations. Thus, predicting mechanical and thermophysical properties of composite materials, it is necessary to consider results of research about structure and properties time-dependent variability of polymer resins under the influence of external factors. The aim of the work was to establish features of moisture absorption and to estimate influence of the absorbed moisture on mechanical and thermophysical properties of epoxy-based nanocomposites. Elastic characteristics of NC were experimentally investigated and described using Halpin-Tsai and Norris micromechanical models considering morphological features of filler particles. Viscoelastic behavior of epoxy resin and NC was analyzed after long-term moisture influence by means of linear integral equation of Boltzmann-Volterra considering a principle of moisture-time analogy. Application of thermomechanical analysis allowed establishing basic regularities for glass transition temperature for NC.

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, Andhra University (AUCE DEPT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING), course: MASTER OF ENGINEERING, language: English, abstract: Material selection is one of the major points that should be taken into account seriously in the engineering design stage. Each material has various properties such as mechanical, thermal, electrical, physical, environmental, optical and biological properties. However, it is a well known fact that only a limited number of design engineers have a thorough knowledge on all these properties of a specific material, which is planned to be used in the manufacturing of the product. Therefore, the design engineer should be guided in selecting the most suitable material. In the scope of this thesis, the aim was to develop"Web Design" and a software package for material selection to help the design engineer in his decision making process. Since some materials is a widely used material in industry, it was selected as a material class among whole engineering materials, and a database covering all the necessary properties was constructed. These properties include chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and physical properties for some of the materials. The database developed by using "Visual Basic .Net' and also contains different material standards and can be updated if the user wants.3It is expected that an information source such as the proposed database will prov...

The work has been performed by developing a model potential which includes effects due to covalency, charge transfer due to outer most electrons of the cation and zero point energy interactions. The potential is used to derive expressions for second- and third-order elastic constants (SOECs and TOECs), thermo-physical properties and pressure derivatives of SOECs. The computed results are capable to explain successfully the SOECs,Cauchy's discrepancy in SOECs and their pressure derivatives, phase transition pressures, volume collapse, and thermal properties. The present results are close to experimental data and better than those computed earlier by others. Present model potential can be used for the similar properties of other compounds too.
