The consequences of urbanization and industrialization, heavy metal contamination in the environment is a worldwide problem. Some heavy metals are essential macro-nutrients (trace metals) for normal plant growth. Their deficiency or toxicity poses adverse effects on growth and metabolism of plants. The elevated levels of these heavy metals contaminate the environment and cause great environmental problems. Plants exposed to excess concentration of a heavy metal, accumulated it in their tissues often to the toxic levels, causing a reduction in growth, biomass, yield-productivity and metabolism. Hence, keeping this view the study of impact of heavy metals on growth and metabolism of crop plants should be taken with goal to achieve high growth and yield of crop plants improving living of standard.

However, there are some serious health hazards associated with the use of chemicals, which include on-farm ingestion by co-worker, discharge of toxic chemicals into air and water and consumption of food containing chemical residues. Therefore an alternative ecofrendily approach became an emergent need. On account of elicitation, in vitro plants become resistant to the pathogens. So the better quality plants are produced and further observing these plants we can also study the long term effects like number and quality of fruit produced in such elicitor treated plants.

Fish and other aquatic biota may be harmed by pesticide-contaminated water.Pesticide surface runoff into rivers and streams can be highly lethal to aquatic life, sometimes killing all the fish in a particular stream.Application of herbicides to bodies of water can cause fish kills when the dead plants rot and use up the water's oxygen, suffocating the fish. Some herbicides, such as copper sulfite, that are applied to water to kill plants are toxic to fish and other water animals at concentrations similar to those used to kill the plants.[35] Repeated exposure to sublethal doses of some pesticides can cause physiological and behavioral changes in fish that reduce populations, such as abandonment of nests and broods, decreased immunity to disease, and increased failure to avoid predators.

Plants are subjected to a variety of abiotic stresses such as drought, temperature, salinity, air pollution, heavy metals, UV radiations, etc. To survive under these harsh conditions plants are equipped with different resistance mechanisms which vary from species to species. Due to the environmental fluctuations agricultural and horticultural crops are often exposed to different environmental stresses leading to decreased yield and problems in the growth and development of the crops. Drought stress has been found to decrease the yield to an alarming rate of some important crops throughout the globe. During last few decades, lots of physiological and molecular works have been conducted under water stress in crop plants. Water Stress and Crop Plants: A Sustainable Approach presents an up-to-date in-depth coverage of drought and flooding stress in plants, including the types, causes and consequences on plant growth and development. It discusses the physiobiochemical, molecular and omic approaches, and responses of crop plants towards water stress. Topics include nutritional stress, oxidative stress, hormonal regulation, transgenic approaches, mitigation of water stress, approaches to sustainability, and modern tools and techniques to alleviate the water stress on crop yields. This practical book offers pragmatic guidance for scientists and researchers in plant biology, and agribusinesses and biotechnology companies dealing with agronomy and environment, to mitigate the negative effects of stress and improve yield under stress. The broad coverage also makes this a valuable guide enabling students to understand the physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of environmental stress in plants.

Environmental pollution is a continuing global problem. Toxic heavy metals contribute to a great proportion of soil and water pollution & causes problems to human beings, animals & to plants. It is becoming a critical concern and needs rapid and effective remediation. The conventional remediation methods are no longer economically valid & practical for environmental cleanup, therefore, they have to be replaced with an advanced & modern technology and that is:“using plants”, which is referred to as “phytoremediation”. This method is environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing, potentially cheap & offers the possibility of bio-recovery of heavy metals. This book describes a recent study focusing on arsenic & lead pollution and the prospect of remediation by using certain plants that are capable of accumulating extraordinary high amounts of heavy metals. Unfortunately the biochemical and physiological mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are still not completely understood. Therefore, investigation on the involvement of the plant’s proteome in metal accumulation, stress, & tolerance offers a new platform to understand the responsible biochemical & physiological mechanisms.

...the book offers a platform to raise thought-provoking questions and encourages in-depth analyses to bridge the gulf between ethnobotany and medical anthropology...Highly recommended. ChoiceThe tantalising and rather eclectic selection of edited chapters takes the reader around the world following plants making their way into local pharmacopoeias, symbolic systems, myths and ways of coping with the unknowns of human illness. This book offers a much needed, concise edited volume on plants, health and healing. It brings together research in the disciplines of botany, biochemistry, clinical medicine, anthropology and history highlighting the contributions of multidisciplinary research to promote a more nuanced understanding of medicinal plant use. JRAIPlants have cultural histories, as their applications change over time and with place. Some plant species have affected human cultures in profound ways, such as the stimulants tea and coffee from the Old World, or coca and quinine from South America. Even though medicinal plants have always attracted considerable attention, there is surprisingly little research on the interface of ethnobotany and medical anthropology. This volume, which brings together (ethno-)botanists, medical anthropologists and a clinician, makes an important contribution towards filling this gap. It emphasises that plant knowledge arises situationally as an intrinsic part of social relationships, that herbs need to be enticed if not seduced by the healers wh...

Plants are all around us, and while we often reflect on the majesty of a great forest or the beauty of our gardens, how often do we notice the understated and varied wildflowers in the meadows, in the swamps, in the woods, and even along roadsides? What about all the woody plants and shrubs that so often appear as the backgrounds in our daily walks and hikes? Did you know that all of these plants and wildflowers have histories, some even playing a vital role in our lives and in our legacies? In Plant Folklore, author, photographer, and naturalist Connie L. Taylor shares over one hundred short stories and histories of the flora that surround our daily lives, exploring their folklore and explaining how our ancestors used them. Not only an entertaining history of the myths and truths about some of the herbaceous plants that grow across the country and especially in the hills of Appalachia, this collection of concise introductions also offers outdoor enthusiasts and budding naturalists tips and advice they can use to identify blooms and collect wildflower seeds or plants with respect and care.Plants are living histories, and each one has a story to tell. From hidden wildflowers to humble shrubs, the plants in our lives and along our hikes have at times been as essential to our survival as they are beautiful and fascinating. Plant Folklore will help you appreciate these important legacies as you learn about their histories, uses, and cultivation.

Phyto-chemicals are very significant, naturally acquiring chemical compounds present in the plants. It has wide application in nutraceuticals and preservation methods. Vigna radiata commonly known as Mung, is an undemanding and invasive plant species, able to grow and sustain in all environment. The ethano-medical value of Vigna radiata was investigated through phyto-chemical study and in vitro propagation methods. Phyto-chemical analysis quantified by GC-MS, showed the presence of flavonoids, carbohydrates, alkaloids, tannins, steroids, glycosides, and terpenoids. Since the intact plant contains low concentrations of active phyto-chemical compounds, plant cell cultures were employed as an alternative to produce large amounts of these metabolites. Moreover using elicitors the metabolite production can be increased. Elicitors like yeast extract and Aspergillus niger as biotic and CaCl2 as abiotic were used to stimulate the production of active phyto-chemical compounds. Furthermore, emphasizing the process optimization by Central Composite Design and ANOVA for percent increase in phytochemical content. Comparatively two fold increase of the plant height and two to ten times increase.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Botany, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: The increase of metals pollution in soil is a worldwide problem that effects the health of humans and environment. The use of green technology such as phytoremediation is one the environmental friendly technique, in which plants and other microbes are used to reduce the level of metals contaminants in soil and lower its uptake towards plants tissues. Studies reported a number of cereal crops such as wheat and medicinal plants like alfalfa accumulate heavy metals in their tissues at higher concentrations. In the present study, we investigated the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat and alfalfa plants with the increase of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in soil. After eight weeks of pot experiment, roots colonization, shoot and root biomass, growth, heavy metals contents and other biochemical parameters were assessed. The results indicated mycorrhizal inoculated (M) plants performed better at moderate Zn and Cd concentrations. In addition, higher phosphorus contents were observed in M treated plants as compared to NM plants. Results indicated that AMF inoculum exhibit different tolerance strategies to reduce metals toxicity in host plants. The effective mycorrhizal symbiosis was observed with wheat and alfalfa plants and can be useful for phytostabilization of metals contaminated soils which can play a vital role in increase of plants prod...

Science and the Garden, Third Edition is unique in explaining in straightforward terms some of the science that underlies these practices. It is principally a book of 'Why' ? Why are plants green? Why do some plants only flower in the autumn? Why do lateral buds begin to grow when the terminal bud is removed by pruning? Why are some plants successful as weeds? Why does climate variability and change mean change for gardeners? But it also goes on to deal with the 'How', providing rationale behind the practical advice. The coverage is wide-ranging and comprehensive and includes: the diversity, structure, functioning and reproduction of garden plants; nomenclature and classification; genetics and plant breeding; soil properties and soil management; environmental factors affecting growth and development; methods of propagation; size and form; colour, scent and sound; climate; environmental change; protected cultivation; pest, disease and weed diversity and control; post-harvest management and storage; garden ecology and conservation; sustainable horticulture; gardens and human health and wellbeing; and gardens for science.
