Document from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, , course: Applied Mathematics, language: English, abstract: Software testing is a process designed to make sure computer code does what it is designed to do and that it doesn't do anything unintended. It is used to achieve quality assurance, verification, validation and reliability estimation. It is a major quality control measure used during the software development. Testing is the process of operating a system or component under specified conditions, observing or recording the results, and making an evaluation of some aspect of system or a component.Testing of software is done at different levels of abstraction - unit, integration and system levels. During testing of software, there is a need to observe the internal and external execution details of the software. The internal execution details are required for the diagnosis of incorrect output during testing, and to ensure correctness of processing in case of a correct output. Without observing the internal execution details, the incorrect results may appear to be correct. Logging is a systematic method of recording the internal information of software. It is one of the typical examples of crosscutting concern (concerns that are common to many of the core modules that span multiple modules). By examining the log, an unexpected system behavior can be identified and corrected. It acts as a diagnostic assistant to reveal the inner working of a system. L...

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, LMU Munich (Department für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Hauptseminar Fictional Literary Biographies, language: English, abstract: By problematizing originality, authenticity and truth, this paper deals with the concept of plagiarism in a poststructuralist mode. It is especially concerned with the representation of plagiarism in Peter Ackroyd's fictional literary biography Chatterton. The question at stake is: how does Chatterton play with pla(y)giarism? This challenging task requires a concise discussion of the addressed issues, which will be the aim of the following introduction. It reflects on the essence of plagiarism and fictional biography.Plagiarism originates from the Latin word plagiarius, meaning kidnapper or thief, stealing slaves. (See Zwierlein 2000, 499) It was not until the 18th century, however, that the word began to designate an intellectual theft. At that time artists became financially independent from their patrons and had to assert themselves on the literary market. (See Ackermann 1992, 22) Plagiarism has been recently regarded as "Anmaßung der geistlichen Urheberschaft: dadurch wird erstens der bewußte Akt der Übernahme betont, zweitens die Tatsache, daß der Plagiator als der Schöpfer des entlehnten Materials auftritt". (Ackermann 1992, 18) According to this definition, plagiarism supposes, firstly, intentional arrogation...

"Two thumbs up" —Gregory V. Wilson, Dr. Dobbs Journal (October 2004) No one can disparage the ability to write good code. At its highest levels, it is an art. But no one can confuse writing good code with developing good software. The difference—in terms of challenges, skills, and compensation—is immense. Coder to Developer helps you excel at the many non-coding tasks entailed, from start to finish, in just about any successful development project. What's more, it equips you with the mindset and self-assurance required to pull it all together, so that you see every piece of your work as part of a coherent process. Inside, you'll find plenty of technical guidance on such topics as: Choosing and using a source code control system Code generation tools–when and why Preventing bugs with unit testing Tracking, fixing, and learning from bugs Application activity logging Streamlining and systematizing the build process Traditional installations and alternative approaches To pull all of this together, the author has provided the source code for Download Tracker, a tool for organizing your collection of downloaded code, that's used for examples throughout this book. The code is provided in various states of completion, reflecting every stage of development, so that you can dig deep into the actual process of building software. But you'll also develop «softer» skills, in areas such as team management, open source collaboration, user and developer documentation, and intellectual property protection. If you want to become someone who can deliver not just good code but also a good product, this book is the place to start. If you must build successful software projects, it's essential reading.

Design quality SAS software and evaluate SAS software quality SAS Data Analytic Development is the developer’s compendium for writing better-performing software and the manager’s guide to building comprehensive software performance requirements. The text introduces and parallels the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) software product quality model, demonstrating 15 performance requirements that represent dimensions of software quality, including: reliability, recoverability, robustness, execution efficiency (i.e., speed), efficiency, scalability, portability, security, automation, maintainability, modularity, readability, testability, stability, and reusability. The text is intended to be read cover-to-cover or used as a reference tool to instruct, inspire, deliver, and evaluate software quality. A common fault in many software development environments is a focus on functional requirements—the what and how—to the detriment of performance requirements, which specify instead how well software should function (assessed through software execution) or how easily software should be maintained (assessed through code inspection). Without the definition and communication of performance requirements, developers risk either building software that lacks intended quality or wasting time delivering software that exceeds performance objectives—thus, either underperforming or gold-plating, both of which are undesirable. Managers, customers, and other decision makers should also understand the dimensions of software quality both to define performance requirements at project outset as well as to evaluate whether those objectives were met at software completion. As data analytic software, SAS transforms data into information and ultimately knowledge and data-driven decisions. Not surprisingly, data quality is a central focus and theme of SAS literature; however, code quality is far less commonly described and too often references only the speed or efficiency with which software should execute, omitting other critical dimensions of software quality. SAS® software project definitions and technical requirements often fall victim to this paradox, in which rigorous quality requirements exist for data and data products yet not for the software that undergirds them. By demonstrating the cost and benefits of software quality inclusion and the risk of software quality exclusion, stakeholders learn to value, prioritize, implement, and evaluate dimensions of software quality within risk management and project management frameworks of the software development life cycle (SDLC). Thus, SAS Data Analytic Development recalibrates business value, placing code quality on par with data quality, and performance requirements on par with functional requirements.

Dynamic binary modification tools form a software layer between a running application and the underlying operating system, providing the powerful opportunity to inspect and potentially modify every user-level guest application instruction that executes. Toolkits built upon this technology have enabled computer architects to build powerful simulators and emulators for design-space exploration, compiler writers to analyze and debug the code generated by their compilers, software developers to fully explore the features, bottlenecks, and performance of their software, and even end-users to extend the functionality of proprietary software running on their computers. Several dynamic binary modification systems are freely available today that place this power into the hands of the end user. While these systems are quite complex internally, they mask that complexity with an easy-to-learn API that allows a typical user to ramp up fairly quickly and build any of a number of powerful tools. Meanwhile, these tools are robust enough to form the foundation for software products in use today. This book serves as a primer for researchers interested in dynamic binary modification systems, their internal design structure, and the wide range of tools that can be built leveraging these systems. The hands-on examples presented throughout form a solid foundation for designing and constructing more complex tools, with an appreciation for the techniques necessary to make those tools robust and effic...

Program software performs the function of the program it implements, either by directly providing instructions to the computer hardware or by serving as input to another piece of software. The term was coined to contrast to the old term hardware. In contrast to hardware, software "cannot be touched".Software is also sometimes used in a more narrow sense, meaning application software only. Sometimes the term includes data that has not traditionally been associated with computers, such as film, tapes, and records. Computer software is so called to distinguish it from computer hardware, which encompasses the physical interconnections and devices required to store and execute (or run) the software. At the lowest level, executable code consists of machine language instructions specific to an individual processor. A machine language consists of groups of binary values signifying processor instructions that change the state of the computer from its preceding state. Programs are an ordered sequence of instructions for changing the state of the computer in a particular sequence.

This study seeks to find answers to the following questions:1) What are the students and teachers' perceptions of the causes of academic plagiarism?2) What are the things that can be done to detect plagiarism? As a university student, one has to submit term papers and to conduct researches during the years of his/her study. It is not an easy task to do, especially, if learners are not trained to be so from the early stages of their study. In Libya, the education system aims at providing learn-ers the opportunity to be researchers and discover their own voice. Therefore, students should be encouraged and trained to write the answers for the examinations in their own words. Such actions are considered as the first seed of creativity being planted to have students get their own voice. Taking into account such aim will make students of English department in the Faculty of Education be more aware of their abilities and keep them away from plagiarism.Academic plagiarism is not newly born, but in the last years, it has been observed to take place in the Education Faculty among the students of English de...

If DNA is Software, Who Wrote the Code? For a society addicted to computers – this is a very profound question. If you deeply understand what it means for life to operate with the precision and perfection of the software we have created in its image, it can open you up to a completely different view of nature and yourself. In 2013, 78.5 percent of all households had a desktop or laptop computer, while 63.6 percent reported a handheld computer, such as a smartphone or other handheld wireless computer. All of these end users now have some familiarity and experience with software. (Source: 2013 census)As someone well-versed in computer software and a liberal arts major, Tom, the author connects the dots between the reality that DNA is software, and the meaning of this epiphany according to his own personal experience with programming and his extensive background in the study of philosophy and metaphysics.Seeing DNA as an obvious expression of an immensely higher intelligence that science cannot explain, the author followed the work of authors like Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra, and the teachings of Buddhism, Advaita and nonduality to form a practice that challenged his own thoughts and found peace within a higher context of an intelligent, conscious reality that is always here and now."If DNA is Software, Who Wrote the Code?" details the author's thought processes and discoveries as he shares his personal journey to a more peaceful lifestyle, citing both scientificall...

Stoican Florin Set-theoretic Fault-tolerant Control in Multisensor Systems

Fault-tolerant control theory is a well-studied topic but the use of the sets in detection, isolation and/or reconfiguration is rather tangential. The authors of this book propose a systematic analysis of the set-theoretic elements and devise approaches which exploit advanced elements within the field. The main idea is to translate fault detection and isolation conditions into those conditions involving sets. Furthermore, these are to be computed efficiently using positive invariance and reachability notions. Constraints imposed by exact fault control are used to define feasible references (which impose persistent excitation and, thus, non-convex feasible sets). Particular attention is given to the reciprocal influences between fault detection and isolation on the one hand, and control reconfiguration on the other. Contents 1. State of the Art in Fault-tolerant Control 2. Fault Detection and Isolation in Multisensor Systems 3. Residual Generation and Reference Governor Design 4. Reconfiguration of the Control Mechanism for Fault-tolerant Control 5. A practical go-to reference for Web developers programming custom software for Web sites Most advanced Web sites or Web platforms have specific requirements that go beyond standard functionality; to meet such requirements, it's often necessary to develop custom software. This is the point where code and content meet, and where this book begins. Where Code and Content Meet presents a collection of real-world, tried and tested patterns that address content-related aspects of custom software development for advanced Web sites or platforms. Mined from a series of successful Web projects, the patterns represent collected expertise of designers from several software development teams and serve as a practical guide to designing your own content-related custom components for your Web project. The patterns are independent of specific tools and technologies, and focus on non-functional requirements, with the overall goal of defining sustainable software architecture. Presents a collection of tried and tested software patterns mined from a series of successful Web projects Includes checklists for managing Web projects and real-world patterns from PLoP conferences Illustrates use of software patterns through a case study that runs throughout the book and gradually evolves as the patterns are applied to it, one by one Covers content modeling and content organization, navigation, findability, personalization, and user participation By employing the software patterns included in Where Code and Content Meet, you'll learn how to program custom software faster and more efficiently.

Over two-dimensional Folded Optical Orthogonal Coding (FOOC) network, a simple threshold detection scheme is illustrated to detect the number of simultaneous network users and to adjust the detection threshold value instantaneously. A special wavelength called pilot wavelength is added into the original transmission patterns of every network user. At the receiver, we can acquire the number of simultaneous network users from the power of the pilot wavelength. Consequently, by adjusting the detection power threshold to the optimum threshold value, we can decrease the bit error rate (BER) and improve the system performance for the discussed two- dimensional optical code-division multiple-access (2D-OCDMA) network. Compared with conventional network system adopting prime codes or modified prime codes, the proposed FOOC network with pilot wavelength threshold detection shows an enhanced BER performance and supports more simultaneous network users.

The book is divided into four major parts. Part I covers HDL constructs and synthesis of basic digital circuits. Part II provides an overview of embedded software development with the emphasis on low-level I/O access and drivers. Part III demonstrates the design and development of hardware and software for several complex I/O peripherals, including PS2 keyboard and mouse, a graphic video controller, an audio codec, and an SD (secure digital) card. Part IV provides three case studies of the integration of hardware accelerators, including a custom GCD (greatest common divisor) circuit, a Mandelbrot set fractal circuit, and an audio synthesizer based on DDFS (direct digital frequency synthesis) methodology. The book utilizes FPGA devices, Nios II soft-core processor, and development platform from Altera Co., which is one of the two main FPGA manufactures. Altera has a generous university program that provides free software and discounted prototyping boards for educational institutions (details at http://www.altera.com/university). The two main educational prototyping boards are known as DE1 ($99) and DE2 ($269). All experiments can be implemented and tested with these boards. A board combined with this book becomes a “turn-key” solution for the SoPC design experiments and projects. Most HDL and C codes in the book are device independent and can be adapted by other prototyping boards as long as a board has similar I/O configuration.

We examine physiological measures from the Musico Cause and Effect study of the Science Network for Man and Music at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts, Mozarteum Salzburg. The existing digital signal analysis tool AIDA used to process the physiological data has been replaced by the Dynalyzer developed by the author with considerable improvements in accuracy and performance. We present fundamentals of digital signal processing, outline the measurement of physiological data, and discuss characteristics of mental blocks. We suggest several criteria for the detection of mental blocks based on characteristic features of the physiological time series in the time and/or frequency domain. In first experiments the potential of these criteria is evaluated by applying them to actual physiological data of a test subject. As no ground truth on the occurrence of mental blocks is available, the experimental results can only be an indicator for the quality of the detection of mental blocks. Further experiments are conducted with data from the Vienna determination test assessing the reactive stress tolerance and at...

The increased availability and quality of open source software on the Web is creating more opportunities for developers to reuse software and is changing the way developers write source code. It is important to understand how developers look for source code on the Web so that tools and approaches can be suggested to better support developers' needs. Based on different approaches to understand how humans look for information, we propose a five-stage model to differentiate the stages that could take place when developers look for source code on the Web. We use this model to assess the effectiveness of existing tools.

Extremes and Recurrence in Dynamical Systems also features: • A careful examination of how a dynamical system can serve as a generator of stochastic processes • Discussions on the applications of statistical inference in the theoretical and heuristic use of extremes • Several examples of analysis of extremes in a physical and geophysical context • A final summary of the main results presented along with a guide to future research projects • An appendix with software in Matlab® programming language to help readers to develop further understanding of the presented concepts Extremes and Recurrence in Dynamical Systems is ideal for academics and practitioners in pure and applied mathematics, probability theory, statistics, chaos, theoretical and applied dynamical systems, statistical mechanics, geophysical fluid dynamics, geosciences and complexity science.
