Bladder cancer is a global health issue. In the endemic areas of Egypt, schistosomiasis is a leading cause of bladder cancer. Prognostic indicators are required to further identify which tumor should be treated aggressively early on, in order to improve surveillance. The Fas-Fas Ligand (Fas-FasL) system has been recognized as a major pathway for the induction of apoptosis in cells and tissues. Fas-mediated apoptosis is deeply involved in cancer cell death, brought about by the immune system. The interaction of Fas and Fas Ligand contributes to cytotoxic T-lymphocyte and natural killer-cell mediated cytotoxicity against cancer cells. This study was performed to assess the importance of the apoptosis markers (Fas and FasL) in bilharzial versus non-bilharzial bladder cancer, in order to detect the possible diagnostic &/or prognostic potentials of this factor.

Joe Correa 38 Colon Cancer Meal Recipes. Vitamin Packed Foods That the Body Needs To Fight Back Without Using Drugs or Pills

38 Colon Cancer Meal Recipes: Vitamin Packed Foods That the Body Needs To Fight Back Without Using Drugs or PillsBy Joe Correa CSN The risk of colon cancer is attributed to several factors such as age older than 50, family history, inherited genetic syndromes, a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, obesity, alcohol, smoking and a diet low in fiber and high in fat. To prevent the risk of colon cancer, consumption of red, processed meats, foods high in calories or sweets, refined grains like white bread and fried foods should be avoided. Certain cooking methods of meats may also increase the risk of cancer. Meats that are cooked in very high temperatures can form carcinogens. Diet that is rich in fiber mostly found in fruits, vegetables, cereals, including flour and bread is protective against bowel cancer. The calcium and vitamin D in dairy products lower the risk of bowel cancer and polyps. Foods that are high in antioxidants bolster the body’s immune system against potentially dangerous substances called free radicals. Some examples of antioxidants naturally present in fruits and vegetables are carotene, beta-carotene and lutein. Studies show that folic acid is also preventive of colon cancer. Folic acid is responsible for forming new cells and tissues as well as keeping red blood cells healthy. A common example of vegetables rich in folic acid are the dark leafy greens, especially spinach. Citrus fruits also contain a high amount of folic acid.

Leptin , the product of the ob gene, is a small peptide molecule synthesized by white adipocyte with an imporatnt role in the regulation of body fat and food intake. The presence of leptin and its receptor also detected in the placental tissue during pregnancy. The amount of fat stored is known to influence obesity and fertility, indicating a link between leptin and PCOS. Recent reports suggest the relevance of gene polymorphism in predicating PCOS. The present study was aimed at investigating the genetic relation between the LEPR and PCOS using polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing. A case-control-based study approach was used, which included 102 controls, 50 lean PCOS and 60 obese PCOS from the Indian women population. A significant difference was found between the genotype frequencies of LEPR and PCOS. Three different mutations were observed in the case samples compared to the control. It shows a significant association between the LEPR and PCOS. I also got a novel SNP in the 12th exon of LEPR. My work also included the standardization of LEP, INS, INSVNTR that are related to the PCOS.

Yingjie Hu Gene Selection Based on Consistency Modelling, Algorithms and Applications - Genetic Algorithm Application in Bioinformatics Data Analysis

Consistency modeling for gene selection is a new topic emerging from recent cancer bioinformatics research. The result of classification or clustering on a training set was often found very different from the same operations on a testing set. Here, the issue is addressed as a consistency problem. In practice, the inconsistency of microarray datasets prevents many typical gene selection methods working properly for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. In an attempt to deal with this problem, a new concept of performance-based consistency is proposed in this thesis. The proposed consistency concept has been investigated on eight benchmark microarray and proteomic datasets. The experimental results show that the different microarray datasets have different consistency characteristics, and that better consistency can lead to an unbiased and reproducible outcome with good disease prediction accuracy.

Veronika Polakova Genetic profile of genes involved in cell cycle control

The Czech Republic has one of the highest incidence rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) worldwide. The vast majority of the CRC cases arises sporadically, with susceptibility determined by genetic factors in interaction with an environment. Cell cycle and DNA repair genes play a fundamental role in CRC development and presents many common variants. In the present study, we genotyped common variants in cell cycle and DNA repair genes to assess the influence of genetic variation on the CRC risk, in 614 hospital-based CRC cases and 614 matched controls. Despite a tendency towards a differential distribution of the variant allele frequencies for some cell cycle polymorphisms, none was significantly associated with CRC risk. We observed a differential distribution between cases and controls of major haplotypes arising from the four analysed variants in the TP53 gene. The results from this study suggest that prevalent haplotypes within the TP53 gene may modulate CRC risk.

It was emphasized to engineering abiotic stress tolerance in blackgram by overexpression of the glyoxalase I gene isolated from Brassica juncea under a most widely used CaMV 35S promoter. We have demonstrated for the first the applicability of the glyoxalase system in imparting abiotic stress tolerance in a crop legume Vigna mungo. The transgenic lines were confirmed for gene insertion using different molecular techniques. The expression pattern of the inserted gene/s confirmed the expression and activity of the gene in the all transgenic lines studied up to T2 generations. The in vitro raised plants are usually sensitive to hardening process as well as transplantation. In case of blackgram, the survival rate during hardening and the transplantation was ca. 65-70%. To improve the percentage survival of plants, plant growth promoting Rhizobium and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi were applied during the hardening and transplantation. This resulted in overall survival rate of plants up to 90% in both the transgenics as well as the untransformed control plants. Effect of Rhizobium and Mycorrhiza on transgenic as well as the untransformed control plants was studied. We reported for the first time that the transgenic nature of the plant does not affect association of the plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria or Mycorrhiza. Alleviates transplantation shock of in vitro grown Vigna mungo plants was also observed.

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they may have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans. Cancer prevention is defined as active measures to decrease cancer risk. The vast majority of cancer cases are due to environmental risk factors. Many of these environmental factors are controllable lifestyle choices. Thus, cancer is generally preventable. Between 70% and 90% of common cancers are due to environmental factors and therefore potentially preventable. This book is intended to provide a relatively short overview of important concepts and notions on the molecular biology of human cancers, including many facts essential to find one's way in this field.

Helps researchers in proteomics and oncology work together to understand, prevent, and cure cancer Proteomic data is increasingly important to understanding the origin and progression of cancer; however, most oncologic researchers who depend on proteomics for their studies do not collect the data themselves. As a result, there is a knowledge gap between scientists, who devise proteomic techniques and collect the data, and the oncologic researchers, who are expected to interpret and apply proteomic data. Bridging the gap between proteomics and oncology research, this book explains how proteomic technology can be used to address some of the most important questions in cancer research. Proteomic Applications in Cancer Detection and Discovery enables readers to understand how proteomic data is acquired and analyzed and how it is interpreted. Author Timothy Veenstra has filled the book with examples—many based on his own firsthand research experience—that clearly demonstrate the application of proteomic technology in oncology research, including the discovery of novel biomarkers for different types of cancers. The book begins with a brief introduction to systems biology, explaining why cancer is a systems biology disease. Next, it covers such topics as: Mass spectrometry in cancer research Application of proteomics to global phosphorylation analysis Search for biomarkers in biofluids Rise and fall of proteomic patterns for cancer diagnostics Emergence of protein arrays Role of proteomics in personalized medicine The final chapter is dedicated to the future prospects of proteomics in cancer research. By guiding readers through the latest proteomic technologies and their applications in cancer research, Proteomic Applications in Cancer Detection and Discovery enhances the ability of researchers in proteomics and researchers in oncology to collaborate in order to better understand cancer and develop strategies to prevent and treat it.

38 Colon Cancer Meal Recipes: Vitamin Packed Foods That the Body Needs To Fight Back Without Using Drugs or PillsBy Joe Correa CSN Colon cancer is a cancer of the large intestines and is one of the most common forms of malignant diseases in the world. It forms with uncontrolled degenerative cell growth in the large intestines. About 5% of men and 3% of women will develop this serious disease in their lifetime. These statistics are surprising and should make you consider changing your lifestyle and diet habits as soon as possible. We still don't know what exactly causes colon cancer, but most doctors agree that a modern, Western diet high in fats and low in fibers increases the risk of this disease. These highly processed, unnatural, and unhealthy foods lead to chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon by affecting the microbes that live in it, which leads to cell degeneration. This is a good reason why you should focus more on eating healthy organic foods rather than jumping from one diet to another that often offer empty promises. Foods you have to include on a daily basis are: fresh fruits and vegetables, organic fish and poultry, nuts, seeds, and legumes. In order to clean your gastrointestinal tract and reduce the risk of colon cancer, your diet must be primarily based on beans, lentil, peas, and other foods that are high in folate. Along with valuable fiber, these foods are an enormous source of vitamin B that will protect your colon cells from damage. This book is a ...

Cancer, which has become the second-most prevalent health issue globally, is essentially a malfunction of cell signaling. Understanding how the intricate signaling networks of cells and tissues allow cancer to thrive – and how they can be turned into potent weapons against it – is the key to managing cancer in the clinic and improving the outcome of cancer therapies. In their ground-breaking textbook, the authors provide a compelling story of how cancer works on the molecular level, and how targeted therapies using kinase inhibitors and other modulators of signaling pathways can contain and eventually cure it. The first part of the book gives an introduction into the cell and molecular biology of cancer, focusing on the key mechanisms of cancer formation. The second part of the book introduces the main signaling transduction mechanisms responsible for carcinogenesis and compares their function in healthy versus cancer cells. In contrast to the complexity of its topic, the text is easy to read. 32 specially prepared teaching videos on key concepts and pathways in cancer signaling are available online for users of the print edition and have been integrated into the text in the enhanced e-book edition.

Chowdhury Sushovan, Singh Sanjeev, Sarkhel B. C. Gene Silencing in Goat - A New Way to Increase Chevon Production

In vitro gene silencing by RNA interference technology is still a new concept, especially in the field of animal biotechnology or agriculturally important small ruminants like sheep and goat. This is the first time the authors reported an efficient and robust way of knocking down the Myostatin gene (knocking down of which will increase the muscle mass/meat) in Caprine fibroblast cell by using U6 promoter based vector and with four different 29 nucleotide shRNA combinations. An easy and effective technique of measuring the transfection efficiency of short hairpin DNA containing plasmids has also been documented. Two, out of four shRNAs are proved to be very efficient and they can be used in vivo for confirmation of the knockdown effect in living animal, as well as for production of a stably transfected cell line with "knocked down MSTN" for future research in this field. Hence, this work is an important contribution in Animal-Cell Biotechnology. An elaborate review of relevant literature and a step-by-step methodical explanation of the experiment with minute details are the extra assets of this book.

The complexity of public-private partnership project procurement requires an effective process for pricing, managing and appropriate allocation of risks. The level at which risk is priced and the magnitude of risks transferred to the private sector will have a significant impact on the cost of the PPP deals as well as on the value for money analysis and on the section of the optimum investment options. The construction industry tends to concentrate on the effectiveness of risk management strategies and to some extent ignores the price of risk and its impact on whole life cost of building assets. There is a pressing need for a universal framework for the determination of fair value of risks throughout the PPP procurement processes. Risk Pricing Strategies for Public-Private Partnership Projects addresses the issues of risk pricing and demonstrates the use of a coherent strategy to arrive at a fair risk price. The focus of the book is on providing risk pricing strategies to maximise return on risk retention and allocation in the procurement of PPP projects. With its up-to-date coverage of the latest developments in risk pricing and comprehensive treatment of the methodologies involved in designing and building risk pricing strategies, the book offers a simple model for pricing risks. The book follows a thematic structure: PPP processes map; Risk, uncertainty and bias; Risk pricing management strategies; Risk pricing measurement and modelling; Risk pricing at each of the project life cycle stages – and deals with all the important risk pricing issues, using relevant real-world situations through case study examples. It explains how the theory and strategies of risk pricing can be successfully applied to real PPP projects and reflects the broad understanding required by today’s project risk analysts, in their new and important role in PPP contract management.

Siregar Henry Salim L-Selectin P213S Polymorphism and Macrophage Profiles in Endometriosis

Endometriosis is known as extra uterine presence of endometrial glands and stromas, and is associated with pelvic pain and infertility. It causes serious physical, mental, and social implications and is also an economic burden to the society. However, the pathogenesis is not fully understood. Several theories have been proposed to explain the histogenesis of endometriosis, including implantation, inflammmation, or genetic factors. Recently, the role of L-selectin in leukocyte extravasation and the role of macrophages in endometriosis have been extensively studied. Although yielding promising results, previous studies have yet to determine the association between L-selectin and macrophages in human endometriosis. This monograph reports a breakthrough study that concluded L-selectin gene P213S polymorphism is associated with endometriosis and that M2 Macrophage has a significant role in developing endometriosis. On confirming the role it has on the events of endometriosis, together with additional studies, L-selectin gene is expected to be a marker in diagnosing this disease.

Thomas Niedermeier Vergleich des Risikoverstandnisses in den Disziplinen Wirtschaftsinformatik und Soziologie

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Munich, language: English, abstract: In the sociology of risk, there are two different fields of research: risk objectivism and risk constructivism. The former deals with the actual increase of danger due to greater pressures through new technologies. Risk constructivism deals with the conception, perception and evaluation of risks in the social environment. Beck is a representative of objectivism. In his view, risk is produced by modern society itself. New risks are constantly emerging as a result of technological progress. This means that humans create their own risk environment and must now deal with it. Luhmann sees risk from a systems theory perspective. A social system is a process of social interactions between acting entities. According to Luhmann, risk only arises when there is communication about it. Furthermore, Luhmann sees the distinction between risk and safety as misleading and illusory. He proposes the concept of risk and danger. Douglas and Wildavsky represent neither an objective nor constructive notion of risk. They see risk as a collective construct that is shaped by the social context of the respective actors. The perception of risk is a social process. With the help of the grid-group model, a society can be divided into four cultural forms with specific risk-related characteristics. The cultural forms are individuali...

The Molecular Biology of Cancer, Stella Pelengaris & Michael Khan This capturing, comprehensive text, extensively revised and updated for its second edition, provides a detailed overview of the molecular mechanisms underpinning the development of cancer and its treatment. “Bench to Bedside”: A key strength of this book that sets it apart from general cancer biology references is the interweaving of all aspects of cancer biology from the causes, development and diagnosis through to the treatment and care of cancer patients – essential for providing a broader view of cancer and its impact. The highly readable presentation of a complex field, written by an international panel of researchers, specialists and practitioners, would provide an excellent text for graduate and undergraduate courses in the biology of cancer, medical students and qualified practitioners in the field preparing for higher exams, and for researchers and teachers in the field. For the teaching of cancer biology, special features have been included to facilitate this use: bullet points at the beginning of each chapter explaining key concepts and controversial areas; each chapter builds on concepts learned in previous chapters, with a list of key outstanding questions remaining in the field, suggestions for further reading, and questions for student review. All chapters contain text boxes that provide additional and relevant information. Key highlights are listed below: An overview of the cancer cell and important new concepts. Selected human cancers: lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, renal, skin, cervix, and hematological malignancies. Key cellular processes in cancer biology including (a) traditionally important areas such as cell cycle control, growth regulation, oncogenes and tumour suppressors apoptosis, as well as (b) more highly topical areas of apoptosis, telomeres, DNA damage and repair, cell adhesion, angiogenesis, immunity, epigenetics, and the proteasome. Clinical oncology: In-depth coverage of important concepts such as screening, risk of cancer and prevention, diagnoses, managing cancer patients from start to palliative care and end-of-life pathways. Chapters highlighting the direct links between cancer research and clinical applications. New coverage on how cancer drugs are actually used in specific cancer patients, and how therapies are developed and tested. Systems Biology and cutting edge research areas covered such as RNA interference (RNAi). Each chapter includes key points, chapter summaries, text boxes, and topical references for added comprehension and review. Quotations have been used in each chapter to introduce basic concepts in an entertaining way. Supported by a dedicated website at www.blackwellpublishing.com/pelengaris We should list the great reviews we got for first edition which are on the back of the 2nd edition: “A capturing, comprehensive, clearly written and absolutely accurate introduction into cancer biology…..This book deserves great praise for the readable presentation of this complex field….the true synthesis of bench and bedside approaches is marvelously achieved.” Christian Schmidt, Molecular Cell “Chapters address the issues of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and patient care and set the book apart from general molecular biology references….This book is applicable to both graduate and undergraduate students, and in the context of a
